I recieved the $1200 stimulus check. I'm not a US resident nor in the US Posted: 27 Apr 2020 08:28 AM PDT I was in the US from december to march working in Maryland as part of an international exchange program( J-1 visa, for international students and seasonal workers) . I have SSN and payed taxes for that period of time, but I went back to my country just before the coronavirus pandemic got bad. I know some of the people I worked with, who were in the same program ( none of us US residents) got the stumulus check and used the money. What happens if i get it deposited on my account? How do I return that money? Will I get in trouble with the IRS? EDIT: I understand this is not my money, I won't cash it. Thanks for the advice and stay safe :) [link] [comments] |
Someone fraudulently published my original composition and is now STEALING my ad revenue. Posted: 27 Apr 2020 08:02 AM PDT [First post here, please let me know if I've flaired wrong or something] So in 2018, I published my best composition as of yet on YouTube (but no other music distributors), and it was reasonably successful. In the last week, someone has downloaded the audio I used and published it under a pseudonym through a music distributor. They have then copyright claimed my original video from 2 years ago, and are taking 100% of the ad revenue. Their stolen audio is also available on all major music streaming platforms. I believe that since they went through a publisher and I didn't, YouTube's Content ID gives them the benefit of the doubt, and not me (their uploads didn't show up as copies of my video). I am unsure what I can do, as any disputes to their copyright claim require them to voluntarily retract their claim; they can just say no, and then copyright strike me. My composition is not registered through a copyright agency, although it is copyrighted by default (in Australia, any work of art is automatically copyrighted upon publication). I have copies of the project file from various points throughout the composition's development, and my video was published almost 2 years before they published their album containing it. Is there a way that I can:
without resorting to legal action (I'm a broke teenager and I don't have the time to deal with a court case)? Thanks in advance to anyone with any ideas! I need them. [link] [comments] |
Boss wants to "hire" his wife and give himself a raise to meet PPP repayment requirements Posted: 26 Apr 2020 07:57 PM PDT I am a full charge bookkeeper at a small business of six in MA. Last week the company received the funds from our PPP loan. Today my boss texted me he will be laying off our highest paid employee. There's been no mention of lay-offs up until this point. The owner also decided he wants to give himself a raise (he's already over the cap of $100,000) and hire his wife so that payroll will still meet the necessary percentage so he does not have to repay the PPP loan. She will not do any work for us and will have no official role. He said he will lay her off after the 8 week period. I am unsure if this move is unethical or illegal. I would like to have no part of anything illegal. We have already butted heads over customers paying cash to him personally instead of our company to the tune of $30,000. He doesn't seem to think this is tax fraud. Is it possible any of this could come back to bite me in the ass? It is difficult to find a new position due to the pandemic. I don't believe quitting because he is sketchy allows me to collect unemployment. [link] [comments] |
Employer spying via webcam (Wisconsin) Posted: 27 Apr 2020 08:50 AM PDT Wisconsin. Not sure whether to flair this as computers or employment. Throwaway. My whole company has been working from home for several weeks, using company-provided laptops. Today I found out from my manager that they have software installed on everyone's computers that allows them to turn on and watch through the webcam at any time. There is no indication on the screen or hardware that the webcam is turned on. They have supposedly been using this to make sure employees are at their computer when they say they are. This would be fine if they informed us, but they deliberately didn't tell anyone they had this capability because they were hoping to "catch cheaters." I haven't always been fully dressed when I'm working, since I thought no one could see me, and I'm terrified of what my boss might have seen. I don't even know who or how many people might have had access. Does this break any privacy laws or anything? What can I do if it does? Edit: Not looking for ways to cover the webcam, just advice as to whether this was legal. If I cover the webcam, they'll assume I'm hiding something. Now that I know it's happening, I can make sure I'm clothed anyway. [link] [comments] |
I believe my tenant is trying to extort money from me... Posted: 27 Apr 2020 08:29 AM PDT During these times (Covid-19 of course) I imagine there are a lot of landlords that are dealing with difficult situations with their tenants, I am of course no different. A bit of background.... I have been renting my house to a couple for 2 years and everything has been relatively smooth up until last month when he told me he is only going to pay half a month's rent (1650 is a full month's rent) and we agreed that I would take half of his security deposit to cover the rest (he pays rent from the 15 to the 15 as per a contract that is now month to month. 2 days ago he told me that he is moving out and I said that I will of course return his remaining money once he was moved out and this would be his 30 days notice to me (IE he is moving out the 25th) and I informed him ultimately he would be receiving a few hundred dollars if there are no damages etc and that I can work with him as I know times are tough and if he wants to move out ASAP I can try to find another renter and pay him back if someone moves in before then (pro rated per day of course). He responded via text that he is moving out on May 2nd and he wants all money back that he is not paying to live beyond the 2nd. I am living in Poland working abroad for a year and my home is in San Diego and I of course am not in a position to negotiate too much from a far and after this threat I told him the best I can do is give him half back now and the other half after he moves. He responded saying that I need to give him 100% of that amount back and I quote (in text), "otherwise you can keep the money, I will stay here and not pay s*%t until the end of the year". I am curious what my options are without dragging this out... I am considering (per his suggestion) that we sign a contract that states he will move out on the 2nd once I pay him his money) as I am told by a friend that a 2nd breach of contract would be much more favorable in court. I am unsure what to do if anyone has any suggestions and I also wonder if him demanding his money back otherwise he will live rent free is extortion and if I can pursue that when I return to the U.S. in a few months. Ultimately I want him out of the house ASAP, but I am of course concerned I will give him the money he's demanding and won't move. Thank you in advance for any suggestions as I am a bit stressed about the situation as I have been nothing but nice to the guy and I feel he is being ridiculously unreasonable. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 27 Apr 2020 07:00 AM PDT i started working at a big used car sales company in Georgia, USA over a month ago and they haven't given me all of my money. they give 2000 for the first month for training, gave us $500 to start off for the first week we were there, so i expected either that or 1000 on my next paycheck. after the virus rolled around they had all the new employees stay home for a day or 2, and then after that they gave us an option to work or not. but they made it very clear that either way we chose it wouldnt affect our pay, so we would get paid regardless. its been well over a month now and ive only gotten 750 gross pay out of the 2000. ive been contacting them since my paycheck was short almost a month ago and every time i call or show up there they basically say that i should see the money in a few days but its been weeks and nothing has shown up. i have a video of him basically admitting they said the pay would be unaffected whether i show up or not, and can probably text the other people that were training as well for witness and i have an indeed application where it shows they will pay 2000 for training in the first month. should i just take it to small claims court at this point? I sell products online. Am I allowed to pay the sales tax myself so the customers don’t have to? Posted: 27 Apr 2020 10:12 AM PDT I've always been a believer that the price you see is what you should pay (taxes and fees included). That's why, as a seller, I like paying the sales tax myself. See an item on my site for $200? Take it to checkout and you won't be hit with any taxes or shipping fees. $200 and that's it Few questions though:
I'm still very new to setting up my business so any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Located in Alabama [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Apr 2020 11:42 AM PDT From and reside in the U.S. and got married in British Virgin Islands in 2016. Got a marriage license while there and signed it after ceremony but no further actions taken once we returned home. Now that I am splitting with my 'husband' he says we are technically not married since 'nothing was filed' (assuming he means here in the U.S.). Is he right? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Apr 2020 01:47 PM PDT We've been together for 3 years, long distance (she's lives and works in Alberta, I'm in Texas) and we were planning on getting married in December. However we've decided to postpone with the current situation but we'd like to get married now if possible. I know there's the K1 visa path but we would like to know if it would be improper for her to get married while here as a tourist. She came down in March just before the lockdowns and has been with me since (believe she's allowed to be here 6 months?) If it helps, she has a law degree from a Texas University, a Texas Bar license and is readily employable [link] [comments] |
Credit union combined my accounts against my wishes showing a private account to my abusive husband Posted: 27 Apr 2020 11:38 AM PDT Several years ago I joined a credit union. And then a few years later I got married and turned the account into a joint account with my husband. Unfortunately my husband was abusive so not too long after getting married I went into a branch to open a private/secret account to help facilitate my escape. I didn't go into detail with the man that opened the account but I asked several different ways if my husband could have access to the account and was told no. There was no way since he was not on the account. There was online banking as well as an app. The joint account had one login and password and the private account had another login and password. About a year after opening the account the credit union revamped the online/app banking and when they did that they combined the two accounts on the same app/online banking. My login for my private account no longer worked. Instead the login for the joint account would show our joint account and underneath that would show my private account. You could then click my private account and get into that account. You could then see how much I had in the account, my transactions, and you could transfer money from my private account to the joint. Needless to say this caused major problems with my husband and my escape. In 2018 I finally left my husband and then a few months later he died. I closed the two accounts in 2018 and opened up a bank account somewhere else. It's taken me until now to wake up from the fog. I've been on autopilot due to the mess with him and other things so I had not said anything to the credit union about what happened. I contacted the credit union today to explain what happened so that they could look into what happened and prevent it from happening in the future but I was brushed off. They never asked my name, I offered to give them my name and any other info they needed to get into the accounts and I was told they didn't need to and would tell "the appropriate department". I asked what department and was told "the appropriate department" I asked for a follow up and it wasn't until I asked for a follow up phone call for the 3rd time that the man asked me for my phone number. I need them to take this seriously. This could have been a very different outcome. I was lucky, he didn't kill me but the next abused spouse may not be as lucky. So who do I contact to get them to take this seriously? Is there a regulatory body I need to contact? I know credit unions are a bit different than banks but I don't know who to contact beyond the credit union so that I can make sure this is taken seriously. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Apr 2020 11:18 AM PDT Located in Virginia, USA A neighbor tried to have my car towed for parking in "her spot" by calling the police and saying it was abandoned. (My road has street parking only, nobody is entitled to a specific parking spot, so they were just being petty. I have lived here for a year, so they should have recognized my car too.) I was in an accident a couple months ago, so apparently the cosmetic damage to the front along with a neighbor claiming it was abandoned ( although I had been parked there for less than a day) made the police suspect I could have stumbled into the woods like an injured dog? At least that's what they claimed. The officer broke into my car, found some mail with my address on it (literally only a few houses up the street) and came to tell me. They damaged the locks on my car and I'm pissed. I was parked legally and literally did nothing wrong and now my property is damaged and my car won't lock properly, hurting resale value and probably making it way easier to break into. Can I make them compensate me for the locks? How would I go about doing this? Tl/Dr: cops damaged one of my car locks when I did nothing wrong based on a false claims from a neighbor. Posted: 27 Apr 2020 10:21 AM PDT does anyone know if I actually have any legal action I can take against either a local or state unemployment office? In 2010 someone used my social security number to file for unemployment (and do god knows what else with it). I found out when I tried applying for unemployment and it wouldn't let me. I've been back and forth trying to get this fixed for over a month and there is still literally nothing I can do. I can't even make an account. I also got told there is no way they can guarantee I will get back pay for all the way back to March 17th. So I've been fucked out of this for over a month and there is a high chance I won't even get the money I'm owed all because someone let another person use my social security number. How is that even allowed? Don't they have to verify people's social security numbers when they apply for unemployment? And this was 10 years ago when I was 16. I've never checked my credit that far back and now I probably have to open up an identity fraud/theft case just to be sure. I'm so annoyed. EDIT: I'm in NH [link] [comments] |
My girlfriend bought a dog (Pennsylvania) Posted: 27 Apr 2020 09:38 AM PDT My girlfriend bought a dog on March 29th 2020 for $300 dollars. She is a two year old husky. They've had the dog since then and now the person they bought it from said that they have to get some sort of insurance on the dog or give her up. My girlfriend doesn't have a screenshot of the post (bought through Facebook) but I saw it and the seller never said anything about the dog having gotten in legal trouble (something about property damage) on the post nor did she say anything about it when they picked her up. Is there anything they can do without a screenshot of the post? The insurance is because of the property damage the dog caused or something like that. [UPDATE] It was for attacking and killing a goat, not property damage. They were contacted by the Dog Warden [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Apr 2020 10:55 AM PDT Can my landlord keep on pursuing showing our house for sale during all of this? She's only offering a 2 hr window notice to where she can show the house any day she likes. Shes also not offering any corona virus assistance at all during this or ppe measures. Shes also trying to make us not BE THERE during showings and also to kennel our cats until its sold. Would love some advice. We're thinking about speaking to a tenant attorney and breaking our lease. Basically sums it up. Our landlord wants to sell the house and we're fine with that but she wants to continue on showing the house multiple times a week. This seems excessive. We would love to get out of the lease and go ahead with moving, but the landlord is refusing to let us out until the house is sold due to a huge nuiscane loud neighbor whos been written multiple citations nextdoor. This is why this is all going down. Thank you [link] [comments] |
Passenger's alcohol level tested, but not driver's Posted: 27 Apr 2020 12:17 PM PDT Hi all, I was a passenger in a car accident recently. There were four people in the car. My wife and I were in the back and two others were in the front. At the ER the nurses asked me if I was drinking or impaired, I said no and that I was a passenger in the car. They proceeded to test my blood alcohol levels and charged me for the test. They didn't ask a single other person in the car if alcohol was involved or test them, not even the driver. I would blow this off as just a simple mistake except that I am a Latino male and all the other people were Asian. I feel I was singled out and made to pay for a test that was based on a racist assumption. How can I challenge being charge for this test. My insurance will cover the cost, but I think it is wrong for the hospital to have tested me in the first place and this shouldn't be happening. [link] [comments] |
Employer trying to put all risk on employees Posted: 27 Apr 2020 01:09 PM PDT I work for a handyman company in a nice ski town in Utah with high end homes and clientele. As with any project, there are mistakes and "oops" as we call them that cost the company money. Due to a county lockdown, we were all laid off a month ago. Since then many of us have come back to work and been met with a new document we have to sign stating that all oops and mistakes are on us as the employee and any cost will be taken out of our paycheck. As we are working with high end expensive material, one mistake could cost me my life savings. I am posting here because this doesn't feel very fair or legal. That's what my company has insurance for, right? They've also done some other questionable things like "banking" overtime 1.5x hours and paying them out weeks later at 1x. Can my company make me sign this document? and if I refuse, what if any legal courses can I take to not be denied unemployment while I look for a new job, as I know my boss will try to block me from receiving it. I keep receiving another person’s turnpike toll bills. Posted: 27 Apr 2020 12:09 PM PDT I don't know if these are okay to ignore or what. Dude doesn't live here and we own this house. No clue who the guy is, probably a former tenant since we bought this off a landlord. I keep taking the notices to the post office and telling them he doesn't live here. We can't be liened or anything, right? I'm about to start shredding them. I'm in PA. Update: I called the turnpike and they told me to keep taking the bills back to the post office. I'm not gonna do that every month from here to eternity... P.S. Why is "douche" a flair option? [link] [comments] |
Wife with MS and COVID and essential employee Posted: 27 Apr 2020 11:18 AM PDT My wife works for State of Mass as a direct care worker for older people. She is an essential worker. She also has MS and is on medication which significantly lowers her immune response to something like COVID. Since the pandemic began and the state has closed down to all but essential businesses my wife was given advice from her doctor to avoid the workplace because if the high possibility of it being passed around a state run direct care facility for handicapped adults. In the past few weeks multiple residents have died, many of the staff have been infected, two staff family members have died, PPE is nowhere to be found. Their testing is also inadequate. What is happening is the higher ups in the state locked in their offices are demanding and threatening people who are not coming to work. Most do not have doctor's notes but some do. My wife's specific situation: she has a note until the 4th of May. Her MS doctor said he does not want her working there and will give her a note for another time period. My wife has worked there without issue for twenty years and has something like 280 sick hours saved. She also has long term disability with her union but I'm not 100% sure what that requires. She also has a lot of vacation time she needs to use up but they aren't accepting that option right now. She has showed up and overnighted in blizzards, hurricanes, and whatever else was asked of her. What can we do to keep her out of there? Her boss has told her that when she returns the system they have in place is worse than ever and the residents are all together more than normal because it's "easier to handle one group than three smaller.". This is leading to a wild fire of transmission. Should we lawyer up? Should we submit an extension letter from her doctor? She feels guilty not working but she has to watch out for herself. Call her union? Any advice would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Can my landlord request I pay a new security deposit if we are extending the lease? Posted: 27 Apr 2020 09:21 AM PDT I currently live in a house with 7 other girls in NJ, as our lease is coming to an end 3 of the girls have decided to move out, but we found 3 new girls to move in. Two of the new girls will be moving into a room which we have decided to increase the rent amount for, while the rent amount for my room will be decreasing. In the lease it does not break down the individual rent amounts, we came up with them ourselves. The issue here is that the one room that 2 of the new girls will be moving into increased in the rent price which means that the portion of the security deposit for that room has increased while mine has decreased. One of the girls in my house talked to our landlord and he said the easiest way to renew the lease is to submit a new security deposit and he would return the original one to us and then the original 8 girls would divide up that amount as we had originally paid. Originally the plan was to have the new girls pay their security deposit to the girls moving out, but since the amounts have changed that doesn't work. I guess my three questions are: - 1) Since we are changing the people listed on the lease, is it still a lease renewal or are we technically signing a new lease - 2) Can my landlord request that I pay an additional security deposit when he already has the original one we submitted (we each wrote individual checks to one girl and then she wrote the check for the full amount) - 3) Is there any other way to go about this? With the pandemic right now I don't really have this amount laying around as I need to save my money for future rent. [link] [comments] |
[TX] father trying to get custody of his son Posted: 27 Apr 2020 11:53 AM PDT for various reasons of her own, the mother of my child listed her ex as the father & he signed the birth certificate. it's clear that the baby is mine, and no one is arguing that point...but what do I need to do, to get the birth certificate changed and have me listed as the father and have her last name changed? Like I said, she's not arguing that the baby is mine and I don't think there will be any kind of dispute, so I didn't know if there was a way to do it, when both parties agree and admit that "yes, I am the father". I know we'll probably have to do a DNA test, but I didn't know if we'd need to go to court or anything like that. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Apr 2020 08:39 AM PDT I live in Colorado for clarification. I have lived in this apartment for about two and a half years and this leasing company took over the property about a year ago. They have made many improvements which have been welcomed and enjoyed by the community. This included a new dog park which they built outside of two of the apartment buildings. Previously, there was a volleyball net there. As tenants began to use it more and more, there became an issue where I would hear barking almost every night around 10 or 11PM or later. This became annoying and incessant. I contacted leasing management about this many times until they finally agreed to put up a sign with hours and lock the park at night. They followed through on the sign with hours but they never lock the door so people just go in there anyways. At this point, the leasing management is sick of hearing from me and refuse to do anything. There is even a security service and leasing management told the security service not to come and lock the park or tell people to leave at night (I called them to try and get something done). How do I file a formal complaint against the leasing office? I want this to stop and it is in my lease that other tenants shouldn't be creating noise like this or letting their dogs bark late at night. I feel it's the leasing management's job to enforce the rules and close the park at night. [link] [comments] |
Electric company knows my bill is too high, won't do anything to fix it Posted: 27 Apr 2020 07:00 AM PDT So this one is a bit more simple than a lot of what's posted here, but help would be appreciated all the same! Recently in the past few months my electric bill has been extraordinarily high. I'm talking anywhere between $250 - $375 for a NYC apartment. For context I've lived in this apartment for 5 years and have always had my name on the account, so I'm very familiar with how much our electric bill normally is and have the payment records to prove it. During winter we generally sit between $30-$50 depending on certain conditions. We've spoken with the power company about this and they informed us that new meters were installed sometime in January, and that since then ours and our upstairs neighbor's power usage has been insanely high. The solution is to have a maintenance person come out to examine everything against the readings they have, but they said that wont be able to happen until after the pandemic (understandable); however they also said theres no way to lower our payments before that can happen. Is there anything I can do to NOT have to pay $300 a month that I shouldn't be paying, or do I have to continue to be screwed over by the electric company? [link] [comments] |
