Guess who was given 3 days notice of being fired?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 01:32 PM PDT

First year staff who was told today that I was being let go on Friday due to performance issues. They said it was a favor to me to keep me working for the next few days, so it wouldn't be a "total surprise". Ie, they expect me to wrap up the work I am doing.

The senior I have been working with for the past 3 weeks told I me that did "great work". My performance review from late January told me I needed to work on attention to detail and to see the bigger picture of our audits, but also said that I was getting better and noted my positive attitude. Never told me I was being written up or told me I needed a performance plan to improve. I thought I was doing okay given this was my first job in accounting...

Feels like a gut punch to be fired... even more of a punch that they want me to keep working knowing that I'm being canned. So in case anyone else is let go of please know you're not alone.

Do you ever look back at your past and wonder how the heck did you get a CPA

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 04:44 PM PDT

I've been in the game for 8 years. Got a CPA and all. Nowadays I have time to do stuff that I wouldn't have able to do if it weren't for the lockdown. I look back at my notes from university almost a decade ago, and my notes to study for the CPA almost 6-8 years ago, and wonder...WTF? How the hell did I do all that? My notes were super detailed, I had notes for concepts I didn't understand, and there were many, I had notes for every chapter, subchapter, every course, every little thing I needed help with. I had copies of quizzes and tests I took, I had flashcards, I had acronyms memorized. I was doing a WHOLE LOT.

It's crazy how time flies. It's like it happened in the movies. I don't think I have that kind of energy anymore besides raising a kid, which is crazy in and of itself.

Accountants who’s working at home on their computers 9 hours a day doing the same things every day

Do you guys ever take a few minutes and just look out the window or something?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 07:40 AM PDT

Throughout the day I'll take a few minutes and just sort of day dream and relax for a second. But there is a guy in this office who is just going full tilt, never relaxes all day every day. I'm only a first year so I'm still trying to get the hang of how this stuff works. Is it expected that employees are gonna not be at 100% efficiency all the time? I feel like all this shit going on is probably contributing a little bit

I'm a B4 Senior Manager & Aspiring Partner with ownership interests in a Strip Club in Houston. Will this reduce my chances of making Partner (not joking)

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 04:31 PM PDT

I don't want to sell my ownership stake, because I'm making 75% of my current salary from this investment alone. I'm also one of the founders of this club and recorded as one of the company officers on registration documents.

Who else is leaving their firm once Covid-19 clears up?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 12:49 PM PDT

My plan was to leave after the March and April busy season. However, I'm still hopeful that we begin to clear up towards the end of summer or beginning of the fall and we see the tax market hirings increase again. Who else is in the same boat? Patience, my friends.

How easy is it to get fired from Big 4?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 05:07 PM PDT

I just made a mistake today that's getting brought up to the partner. I'm an A2 and I'm terrified I'm going to get fired because it caused the client to perform extra work. Am I screwed? Anyone else know of people making mistakes at Big 4 that are just due to a lack of attention to detail? I'm kind of freaking out right now...

Is it worth it to take a pay cut to be happier? (Public Accounting)

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 08:50 PM PDT

Not going to mention the firm name or location since some of my current co-workers are lurkers on here. In a nutshell, I am a recent college grad about five months in as an A1 at a mid-sized public accounting firm in the auditing department and I already hate it, tbh. At first, I was optimistic and kept an open mind when starting, ignoring all of the people who bashed public accounting. Fast forward a few months and I now see why a lot of people hate it.

I came in expecting to work lots of hours, so it wasn't a big deal to me, but my biggest issue is with my manager making my life a living hell. In the four months that I have been here, I have literally had no more than 30 minutes of an actual person training/helping me. I have always been told to look at last year's w/p.

For the last couple of engagements, I have had the same manager in charge, who is honestly an arrogant prick, and is a dick to people who he thinks are dumb. Whenever I come to him with a question, which is often, due to the fact that my training has been non-existent, he acts like I am inconveniencing him so much and then leaves such condescending review notes when I finally submit my w/p's.

For the past few weeks ever since our firm transitioned to WFH, it has been even harder to make steady progress on w/p's. I've been getting chewed out more and more by this guy every day. Today he blew up on me over the phone because I went over budget on some sections in my current engagement, which again, happened because of literally having no training and having to sit there forever to figure a w/p out. I've pretty much given up on asking him any questions anymore due to the fact that he is basically no help and ridicules me every time.

I honestly don't know how much longer I can take this treatment. I've started to have panic attacks, which I have never had before in my life, and have started to become depressed. My family and friends have noticed changes in my attitude as well. I never want to go out and do anything or spend time with friends due to just feeling so defeated/unmotivated by this job.

I have started looking for other jobs and I have seen quite a few entry level industry jobs (40-45k). I currently make in the range of (47-49k). Honestly, I value my quality of life over money, and at this point would be willing to take a pay cut as long as I still have enough to cover my basic expenses (car, rent, etc).

Rant over lol. But on a serious note, has anyone ever left public accounting this early while taking a pay cut, and looking back, are glad that they did?

    No rude/sarcastic comments please!

Is B4 Tax a good path if my goal is to make six-figures+ by 30?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 12:43 PM PDT

I would like to be somewhere in the $100k-$120k range by 30.

It looks like one of the best ways to get there is to do B4 tax for a couple of years, work my way up to senior, and then from there it looks like people either go into corporate tax, government, some other exit op, or stay with the firm/public accounting in general.

Is public accounting a good way to get there since it appears experienced seniors are nearing six-figures and managers are making over 100k in bigger cities (NYC, DC, Chicago, etc.)

Weird dreams and a question from an industry tax guy

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 01:38 PM PDT

I have been having weird dreams lately.

I have not worked at a CPA firm for four years now, but I have been having dreams about working at the firm again.

I am not asking to analyze my dreams, but do you other industry guys ever have these dreams if you used to work at a firm?

I sometimes miss it only when I have to deal with corporate bullshit.

I have no idea what to do ... desperate ... any comments or advice welcome.

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 06:29 AM PDT

First off, I know I'm not a special snowflake. I know the pandemic is affecting everybody.

I quit my job in October 2019 to pursue the CPA. I was a revenue accountant making $80k at a company for 2 years. I was miserable there - I worked 60 hours a week in a very high-stress and understaffed department. I had 2 panic attacks while at work (and I've NEVER had problems with anxiety in my entire life before that position). I felt the CPA was my ticket out, where I could make the same money I was making, but not send myself to an early grave with stress and exhaustion.

As soon as I quit, I started taking online courses. I already had a bachelor's degree in economics with some accounting coursework, but in my state I need 36 credit hours in accounting and I wasn't close. I accelerated through online classes, basically going full speed 60 hours/week, and in February 2020 I graduated with a 2nd bachelor's degree in accounting. It was through a crappy online school, but they were cheap and accredited and my state accepts them, so I don't care. My next goal was the CPA exam.

I submitted my application to my state's board of accountancy at the beginning of March. Paid the $100 application fee. Bought the Becker study materials.

And now ....... nothing. Frozen. My state's board of accountancy is closed and not having their monthly meetings to approve my application. Not only that, all of the testing centers are closed.

I am panicking and I am desperate. I don't know what to do. I stopped studying for the CPA exam because who knows how long this will last ... I literally sit at home all day playing video games, reading, and watching movies. I am going crazy not knowing what to do.

Should I just ride it out and PRAY that by a miracle that CPA testing resumes? Should I take out student loans and get an MBA or a master's degree so at least I am working toward something? Should I try and find a job????

I have enough left in savings to cover my living expenses for about 8 months until I'm broke. I'm worried the economy will be dog shit in a few months and I'll have to take an entry-level job making half of what I made at the job I left just to survive. I'm not eligible for any sort of rental assistance or unemployment benefits in my state because I left my job voluntarily, I wasn't "laid off" due to COVID-19, but since I can't pursue my CPA ambitions right now I might as well be.

Does anyone have any advice or opinions? Any and all comments welcome ... I'm freaking out and I am desperate.
