What to do at this point? I have Mercury insurance but my deductible is $2000 because I have a ticket and I tried to keep my insurance low until July (when the ticket drops off).

I haven't told my insurance yet but the BMW repair shop told me I can claim my insurance and not pay a deductible since it wasn't my fault and that they will go after State Farm for the deductible and additional repair costs. Is this true?

Should I be worried that an insurance company is going under and will not pay out a claim?

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 09:42 AM PDT

I've had a long drawn out claim process with Lemonade in which I've provided every piece of information they've requested and cooperated with the fullest of my ability. It has been 7 months since the claim was filed and I've been pleasant and patient with the whole process, probably more than I should have been because it is now clear to me that several delays occurred in this 7 month process that were needless in hindsight.

The last 2.5 months seemed to have been spent kicking the claim to a higher up in the claims department for final approval on the determined resolution, but I've gotten no indication of what that resolution is. It is now apparently waiting for the claims dept head's approval but thanks to the pandemic, everything is on hold as the company transitions to a remote work situation. All this being said, I'm now also worried that the company may just fold instead of paying out any claims. Is this a possibility in the current climate? If yes, is there anything I can do to protect myself? Also, if this is not a concern, then how much time is appropriate to let pass in this workplace transition before I should ask for an update? If you can't tell, I'm very worried and trying to manage expectations.

Pharmacy keeps on billing my old insurance

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 10:28 PM PDT

So I changed insurance companies around July 2019 and I submitted all of my new insurance info to the pharmacy to update. And I kept on picking up my medication monthly and each time I show them my current and correct insurance information. They billed my old insurance and it kept on going through. With my old insurance I would pay zero dollars. And the first time I specifically asked why they didn't bill my new insurance and they just said basically your new insurance just isn't working so we filled out under your old. I asked if I can get billed later for this and they said no basically the pharmacy will pay ,not you. And I think something went differently Because my new prescription is under the correct one and now I have to pay a copay.

Should I contact somebody, before I get collections or something? My old insurance is weirdly still saying in eligible for benefits?

Tldr the pharmacy is incorrectly billing my old insurance and undercharging me?

    Turn lane side swipe

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 09:48 PM PDT

I was driving a pickup and towing a trailer. Approaching an intersection I was going the speed limit and started to move into the left turn lane. As I did this, the car behind me moved into the turn lane and was moving faster than I was. By the time I realized he had begun to overtake my trailer, it was too late and my trailer side made contact with his passenger side fender (the side not front of his vehicle).

[Toronto, Canada] Both parked cars hit

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 09:35 PM PDT

    Hello,

I live in Toronto, and we park our cars on the street. Someone (could be more than one person) supposedly stole a car, went on a joyride, and hit both of our cars (each covered by different insurance companies).

Thankfully our neighbor saw them taking off, and called the police. Supposedly the police caught the suspects. I gave the officers our insurance and proof of ownership, and we are waiting for the traffic officer to finish their report.

My neighbors said the suspects looked young; how will that affect the outcome of this accident?

I don't know much about insurance, and have never been in an accident before, so any advice, tips, or general information on what to do next will be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

Just received a medical bill higher than both eob and annual out-of-pocket maximum

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 09:06 PM PDT

I have medical insurance through my workplace. It's no premium with a $100 deductible and $1000 annual out-of-pocket maximum. I've gone to the doctor several times and had everything work out fine with my insurance.

In January, I had to go to the emergency room. For the insurance that I have, unless I am admitted, all emergency room visits are treated as in network. I received an eob ~$250 (it's online and the website is down). I got my bill from the hospital today and it's $1400.

I'm not well-versed in insurance, so I'm mostly wondering what steps I should take to take care of this. I'm going to call my insurance on Monday, but I'm not even sure what to say. I've also scoured my benefits plan trying to find some reason that the bill would be higher, but couldn't find anything.

    COBRA vs Open Market

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 02:54 PM PDT

I recently moved to a new job that pays significantly more than my previous job but doesn't not offer a company insurance plan. I can continue my benefits with for the next 18 months through COBRA but the cost of that is ~$1500/month for myself, my spouse, and our son. I'm considering looking into other options on the market but it's really quite confusing on how to get the right information. Is there a good resource that can be recommended on how to get quotes from companies? Things to avoid? Any information would be great!

    Job Ideas

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 05:01 PM PDT

    Hi there!

I've been working as a counselor for the last twelve years, but I'm burnt out and looking for a new career path. I was looking into getting licensed to sell insurance, but before doing so, I researched job postings. Nearly all of them require sales experience, and I have none. And I'm not sure that I'm a good salesperson.

So I don't think that would be right for me. I'm wondering if anyone here would be able to offer me any advice about other options in the insurance industry. I'm aware of insurance adjuster trainee jobs, such as the ones that Progressive and Geico have, and am considering those, but I know that they don't pay very much.

Are there any other licenses I could obtain that would allow me to obtain a position that would provide a starting salary of $60K? I'm just feeling a bit lost right now as I'm trying to start over in a new career.

Will my Short Term Disability insurance cover me in this case?

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 08:32 PM PDT

I work at a private food service/vending company as an order picker. I've held a variety of similar positions in 3 different departments with them over the 9 months or so that I've been there. Several months ago, I was promoted into another department with just a couple of employees. Obviously, with all of the stuff going on, that department's orders have been cut down to nothing and they moved us to the other departments that have more work. They have furloughed all temporary employees until further notice and are helping them sign up for unemployment. They have also let go some employees who were direct with the company. Those of us who are cross-trained and have the most experience are the ones that they've kept. There aren't that many of us, maybe 8-10. There are other departments still open, but I'm hearing that they're cutting back on employees, as well.

A letter from the upper management states that senior leadership has had their salaries drastically cut down. They've laid off a lot of people at the corporate office and expect more cuts as our customer companies (which are closing and laying off their own employees) don't need our products for obvious reasons; they're working from home or have a tiny work force now.

I'm working with Gastritis (not officially diagnosed by my GI doc as of yet). I'm under the care of a Gastroenterology doctor, but my new position has a lot more heavy lifting all day long than my previous position. This is the only position that they have left to put me in, basically. There is no other option apart from a furlough and getting a little bit of unemployment. We've signed up for new benefits for this year that begin on 4/1, but of course aren't active yet. We just transitioned over to a new company that bought out our old company, so these new benefits are for the new company. Among those that I have previously signed up for are Short Term Disability and Long Term Disability (literally just days ago because our open enrollment period was the 13th through the 20th of this month). I'm curious about when the Short Term Disability will actually kick in and pay.

If my Gastroenterologist doctor wrote a note for me that my job is physically too difficult for me to perform right now given my stomach and GI issues (and I am legitimately having issues - my stomach and intestines/colon are shaking/pulsing all day long and night), would I qualify for those STD benefits immediately? So far, I've had an EGD (Upper Endoscopy) and biopsy of my stomach. They found only inflammation and test results were negative for cancer and bacteria. They don't know the reason why yet. I suspect that my massive amount of RERAs (Respiratory Effort Related Arousals - the brain waking up due to a slightly narrowing airway not quite equivalent to sleep apnea, but with similar symptoms) has been the cause of my random anxiety attacks that started 3 months ago. The anxiety is apparently messing with my GI tract and making it do a lot of weird things. This all happened after a stomach bug my family caught in early February. On top of these issues, I have the pretty severe sleep issues that are still undiagnosed. I'll end up seeing another sleep doctor at some point. The first was of no help and I wasn't diagnosed with sleep apnea (only 4.7 AHI, but 18 RDI and most sleep docs don't know about or treat the high RDI because they don't accept Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome as a condition). These conditions put me at high risk when the Coronavirus is in play. I already get short of breath from (I presume) the Gastritis when at work and even at home when resting. My symptoms basically line up with Gastritis, but no official diagnosis from the doc yet. I'm on prescription meds for it.

I see the company eventually pausing for a while and furloughing all of us for maybe x weeks. The Cigna Short Term Disability insurance should theoretically cover this for me. I haven't been officially diagnosed with Gastritis or any specific GI condition by name yet yet by the doctor (I'm simply experiencing symptoms). STD payment is like $1,352/month. If the company furloughs us all and shuts the doors for whatever time limit, I'd get maybe $200-$300 at best for x weeks on unemployment. I legitimately have medical concerns. I can't drive right now due to my sleep issues (not alert enough to be on the road) and I'm concerned about my health taking public transportation in a major city. Should I pursue the STD benefits when they kick in at this point out of fear for my health? My bills and life aren't pausing just because my stomach is having issues, unfortunately. I need time to get my sleep issues and GI issues in order and see some docs, as well. All of this just snowballed at once. Got any advice? Doctors have looked at symptoms so far and haven't really made a diagnosis, so that part isn't particularly doomed as far as a 'pre-existing condition' because they haven't yet determined any conditions yet.

My coworkers and managers would vouch that I love, love, love to work. I've stayed late since my first day and they know my work ethic. I've just got a lot going on right now and I'm worried about my income stream on top of that with all of these closures. I could file for unemployment, but the problem is that I am limited due to my stomach and sleep-related issues right now, so my health would actually cause me to violate the unemployment clause of being available to take any job. I'm a bit limited right now. I barely get my job done at work, but in a lot of pain. I'm going to attempt to get the STD benefits and try to use this down time to get my health problems treated so that I can go back to work and get my immune system back where it needs to be. Will I have any issues trying to get the STD to pay with a letter from the doctor? My stomach can't keep up all of this lifting in this new department (worked there before without any issues before this stomach thing came up) and I have family to take care of. I'm going to try to last until the benefits kick in, of course. The pain at night from my stomach/intestines also keeps me awake. At 37 years old, I'm not ready to just kill over and stop working, but I have some serious issues going on right now. What can I do? I also have Gap insurance that is supposed to help me pay my health insurance deductible.

My manager said that in the event of a full furlough of everyone, the company keeps paying my insurance premiums. My total insurance is $160/bi-weekly pay period. Apparently they pay another $450 in addition to that just for me to have the insurance even if furloughed.

Best Short Term Disability provider in CA?

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 04:37 PM PDT

I was planning on getting a Short Term Disability policy sometime this year as I am exempt from paying into and do not qualify for CA's SDI. Now that there is this Pandemic getting a STD policy has sort of jumped to the top of my priority list. I would appreciate any recommendations for providers or any horror stories to dissuade me. My work has a payroll agreement with Manhattan Life however I have not seen positive reviews for them online.

    2 Diminished Value Claims

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 07:44 PM PDT

    Hello,

My car, a 2013 Honda CR-V was involved in 2 separate accidents in Ohio. They were 16 days apart. The at-fault drivers were both State Farm carriers. Their insurance has paid out repairs, and the claims are under the same adjuster. The car is valued at $12700. Repairs were about $4000 for the first accident and they were about $4000 for the second accident. The DV wreckcheck estimate was $4000 for the 1st accident and for the 2nd accident about $4000 as well. Total of $8000 in DV for both claims. My body shop did a wreckcheck report for free for me.

State Farm is denying my DV claims with their usual denial letter (shocking). So, I am debating going to small claims court. The filing fee is $85 for each claim. (I will also post this to r/legaladvice)

    My questions

    1. Will State Farm negotiate the DV loss?
    2. What evidence will I need to provide (other than the wreckcheck DV report?)
    3. Can I claim DV for 2 accidents?

Do I go through insurance and file a claim? (Minor car accident)

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 03:49 PM PDT

I was driving Northbound through an intersection. I had a stop sign, the other street did not. I stop at the stop sign, look both ways. On the left side Southbound is a GWP truck with orange cones around it. As I pull into the intersection the owner of the other car is coming from behind the GWP truck, my front left bumper hits her rear right door. The other car's friend was driving her car, owner of the car was in the passenger seat. We said we'd go without insurance to avoid both our premiums going up. I just got hit with a $1k quote from the other car. Do I go through insurance? Am I at fault here? Thanks in advance!

Do auto claim adjusters look at witness credibility?

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 05:51 PM PDT

I got into an accident almost two months ago, my adjuster initially settled at 50/50, but I started talking that my witness is independent, objective, credible, reliable and has no financial interest in the matter and provided a statement a few days after I contacted him after the accident, so it seems up in the air again now.

From my understanding, reading some court cases, in civil court, the trial judge generally always accepts the independent eye witnesses evidence and generally would supersede both drivers' account in the accident?

Does any auto claims adjusters have any guides on how they treat evidence? Like the passenger of the other vehicle likely would be very weak witness because he's a tow driver and I literally let him tow my vehicle afterwards because he said it was free, and he held it for close a month before releasing to the bodyshop to repair. So he has financial interest in the matter and wouldn't be a strong witness. The witness I got was a driver in another car at the intersection who had memories of what happened from his point of view, I do not know him, only talked to him for 20 seconds in person to get his number, and then through text to get his point of view, and he has no financial interest in the matter. My witness is independent, so wouldn't his statement have way more weight to it?

Homeowners insurance dropping coverage for bogus reason

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 11:14 AM PDT

I live in South Carolina. I have an 8 year old roof with 30-year rated shingles.

A couple of weeks ago, I got a letter notifying me that my homeowners insurance was dropping me for a patched roof and "lifting shingles." Apparently they came and did an inspection at some point without my knowledge, but since I work from home I have no idea how.

I do have a roof repair, from last May. I paid cash and did not take out a claim for it. The roofers noted the high quality of my roof otherwise and that the cause was a weird slope by the fireplace that was fixed with a cricket. I figured I was done and had been a good responsible homeowner.

After a lot of stalling on the part of the insurance company in requests for info from my broker, they finally came back with:

"We have reviewed the roofers contract and photos of the roof. Renewal is being declined as the roof was repaired and not replaced as requested."

They never requested I replace the roof. I want to know the date of said request and the date of their inspection and see the inspection report, but based on their communication thus far, seems unlikely.

Also, my house is currently in the market, which apparently means getting new coverage will be expensive and challenging.

Is this legal and what recourse do I have? All the broker told me is:

You can replace the roof and renew with Federated National in June if the home has not sold.

You can wait out the replacement until the renewal in hopes that the home sells prior to the renewal.

If the home does not sell by the time of you renewal, we can re-market your home to another carrier. As I mentioned before, the fact that the home is on the market limits our carriers, but we can place possibly place coverage with Johnson and Johnson. They will write homes for sale and older roofs. Please keep in mind that these factors may impact the rating.

How can I reasonably estimate building property value on a condo insurance policy

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 10:46 AM PDT

    Hi r/insurance,

My annual ho6 insurance renewal has come up, and every time it does I'm left wondering if I'm over insured. I live in a 2 bedroom 2 bath unit in an 8 story apartment building in Seattle. My current building property coverage is at $132,000.

Recently I had my kitchen renovated at a cost of $18,000, and a bathroom remodel at $16,000. Based on that, I'd assume the $132,000 coverage is probably far too high.

I've reduced my coverage down to $100,000, but I'm wondering if you have any tips on how I could actually come up with a reasonable number for a worst case scenario?

Motorcycle accident in Jackson county Georgia (90 min N of Atlanta). Other vehicle at fault. Not sure how it works when it's getting help for my son-in-law who is injured.

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 10:20 AM PDT

Last night my son-in-law was stopped to make a right hand turn. He was waiting on traffic to clear and was rear-ended bye a vehicle that never slowed down. He has a torn ACL in his shoulder and other road rash injuries all over his back. He also has some torn tendons in his arm. He does not have health insurance as he had just started a new job. He went to the ER last night and was referred to a specialty orthopedist here in Georgia. Because it was a vehicle accident I think insurance pays for it but I'm not 100% sure how it works. Can anyone tell me what he needs to do? He's 26 this is his first accident ever he's just stressing about everything right now.

    Canada Pacific Blue Cross

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 08:33 AM PDT

Hi there, PBC refuses to process my RMT claims until they see my patient charts. My RMT says it's my confidential medical records and I don't have to give the insurance company access to them.

I told the insurance that I want to keep my medical information confidential, but they insist to see those records and are not processing my claims.

Any suggestions on what to do? What are my rights?

It seems like I have a right to keep my medical records private, and insurance at the same time has the right to not pay my claims if I don't provide these...

Filling out my information in the Marketplace questions

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 04:35 AM PDT

I (21f) was recently told by my dad that he's getting a new job that doesn't offer health insurance and he won't be putting me on his own new plan.

I started putting my information in the marketplace but they're asking for information that I won't be able to answer.

The first questions that I can't answer is all the policy information for my current health insurance. All I have is a health insurance card, I don't know anything else about it. It wants to know policy start and end dates, how much the policy costs, how he pays and other things. I asked him but he told me that I should be putting "no" to the fact that I currently have insurance even though I do and he won't give me the rest of the information. Do I just say no then? Or do I have to wait until I actually don't have insurance? I don't know if that will be before April 15th or not. My dad said i "should" have coverage until the end of April.

Second, I use my moms address on my drivers license but I don't live in her house. I have moved every year, at least once a year, for the past 4 years so I have never updated my address. I haven't got to the part yet but they said they need financial information etc for everyone in the household. I know my mom will not give me any of her information. I also don't technically live with her.

How do I navigate this without my parents being willing to give me any information? Do I just not answer those questions and hope for the best?

I'm just super stressed about this because I can't really afford it. I've found a few policies under $50/month but it just seems so useless to me because it doesn't cover anything I've actually used health insurance for in the past 5 years. I've only really used it to get new glasses and go to the dentist. I haven't been to a doctor in years besides my OB last year. I'll pick a cheap plan so I don't get absolutely screwed if I end up in the hospital or need to go to a doctor for antibiotics but I can't help but feel like its a waste of my money because I won't be able to afford to even use my health insurance, let alone get coverage for things I actually need.

The irony is that I work in insurance (P&C sales) and my boss doesn't offer any health insurance. Like WHY.

Thank you for any & all advice you can give about filling this out!
