Peer Support and Self Management Saturday’s - A Safe Place to Vent, Seek Emotional Support, Share Self Management Techniques and Experiences, or Just Rant

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 06:06 AM PDT

Welcome to this week's Peer Support and Self Management Thread.

This is a Safe Place to Vent, Seek Emotional Support, Share Self Management Techniques and Experiences, or Just Rant.

The goal for this thread is to help one another manage mental and physical health so we can more easily find success.

We all struggle sometimes and it is important to recognize that the struggle is part of the journey. The important thing is to learn how to overcome that adversity to grow and succeed.

Be tactful and classy in how you vent your feelings and share your frustrations. Act in a mature manner.

Ask questions, share experiences, and be there for one another. Practice empathy in giving advice and remember that what worked for you isn't guaranteed to work for others. Make suggestions, not demands of others.

#Because this is meant to be a safe place to support emotional and physical health there is a zero tolerance policy in effect. Be KIND. Be sure to report any conduct that is in violation of that key tenet.

You can also find more support using instant chat on the /r/startups discord.

I'm a software developer. Where to find enthusiastic people to create something meaningful during the quarantine?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 11:42 AM PDT

As the title says, I'm looking for enthusiastic people to create something meaningful during the quarantine but seems like everyone is watching Netflix or playing video games.

How would I go about finding a short term partner to build something with? Technical skills help but it's not necessary.

In my mind, the ideal project should be software which should not take more than a month to put together and is contextualized with the current scenario we are living in. It doesn't have to be related to the virus itself but maybe a way to help people that are getting laid off or a different form of entertainment for us quarantined.

Also, the ideal partner should be able to actively contribute somehow even if they don't have technical knowledge.

    Any help?

    Video Tutorials Resources

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 03:57 PM PDT

Hey guys. I work at a software startup and was wondering what are the best resources to make video tutorials, like an introductory walkthrough or explaining one of the features, or just in general videos related to marketing. Where should I start looking? How did you guys go about doing video marketing?

    Thanks!

How did twitch become popular when you could've done the exact same thing you YouTube?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 04:30 PM PDT

I'm still trying to figure out the rising popularity of Twitch when you could have just live streamed video games on YouTube? Can anyone explain it to me? I'm hoping this could help me figure out an idea of my own because I one or two ideas that I think are good but then I think, "But this other service already exists where people could do that so what's the point?" Then I see an example like Twitch or Instagram where they do something could have already been done on another service and if I had those ideas at the time of their creation I wouldve just said there's no point people could do that on YouTube or Facebook in Instagrams case.

Should I stop working with my friend?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 10:00 AM PDT

    Hello,

I think I had a pretty great Idea and invited a Friend to work on it. But since then (more then a week), it all become just a frustration for me. We fight about the Idea since he wanted some changes and then end up in a compromise integrating both paths. So basically it goes often this way: he has an Idea - I'm against it or have some contra points. He then just tries it out spends some time on it. And then says ok lets do it this way since it already works in some way. We fight about technology, like which database should we use and which boilerplate.

Really don't know how to move forward. On the one hand he is a good friend and also I need help- don't want to do it alone. Also he bad a bad time last month - so I thought that would be a good idea to have some fun on the project. On the other hand I would be much faster without him right now and actually don't enjoying working on the project anymore. How would you move forward?

What are the main costs associated with startups?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 06:35 AM PDT

I'm an undergrad and thinking of taking advantage of still being in school to gather some cheap labor from campus and slap together a business operation

It will likely be a web based service with MAYBE manufacturing but let's just say web based

I can probably get other students to do some work for me for $500 - $1000 for one off jobs

So if I can build my service from salaries of around $5000 What other costs will drive this up?

Would I need a lawyer/insurance...? or whatever else there is to starting up a business

I can do the financials myself, what if I can do the law myself so I won't need a lawyer?

    Equity for name?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 01:42 PM PDT

Question for all you fine citizens of r/startups.

I was discussing a business idea with a co-worker that I had been developing for quite some time. This idea turned into a business plan, which turned into an LLC and trademarked name/logo/etc

This co worker helped me come up with the business name and is now requesting a stake in the company, which I am open to, but I am wondering if I should offer equity and how much.

What company type should I register for my SaaS? LLC, S/C Corp etc?)

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 03:53 PM PDT

Hey guys. I'm nearing release of my software and wanted to ask what kind of company type I should register for it? I'm having trouble googling the correct thing.

Is there an article or a book that can explain this bit? I'm fairly scared as I don't know what to put in ToS, privacy pages and things of that nature. I am somewhat scared.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thank you!

What is a good conversion rate for a landing page?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 03:37 PM PDT

I recently ran a Google Ads campaign for a landing page as some sort of market validation for an app idea. About 4.2% of people that clicked on the ad gave their email for a possible upcoming beta. Is this an okay conversion rate to go ahead and build the app? I didn't really do any adjustments to the landing page or advertisement to try to up that number.

Another thing to know is that this app is currently probably not that useable given the current coronavirus circumstances.

How do you decide what gets done first (for growth)?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 02:29 PM PDT

If you start out with just a basic product and a way to market to a customer. You have no brand yet, no large customer awareness yet, not a top level product yet.

How should a company decide in year 1-5 what they should spend money on what first? Product, customer awareness, brand image? I'm thinking first priority is mostly product and some customer awareness for the first 1-5 years. Then to slowly spend more on brand awareness and brand image in year 5-10. Until it can do them all. Is there any common tactics people do at different stages?

How do you do “Know your VC” process?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 06:53 AM PDT

VCs started reaching out to our startup and probably quite soon we may consider starting some discussion with them. I'm quite new to this topic though, and many names and companies are not known to me. So I'm a little bit worried that if some big name reach out to us, I might be too busy and unprepared to answer promptly.

Anyone knows any good resource where it might be possible to see a full list of VCs and their ratings by different aspects? Or how do you usually do "Know your VC" process?

Stripe Checkout to Quickbooks free integration?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 01:04 PM PDT

Easy code, low code or cheap third party (self-hosted) to integrate Stripe Checkout (not a subscription) to Quickbooks:

    • Products
    • Customers
    • Transactions

Note: no need for consolidation with the bank, just to align both systems: - Products - Customers - Transactions

Current solutions I found: - https://github.com/calvintwr/nicknacks -> not tested - Sush.io but the trial period is only 5 days!

    • Sync should be daily or real-time
    • Transactions per month: 20

Ideally no monthly cost, but it needs to be stable and fast to implement (the business is getting hit hard already)

Were you planning on launching you business as the Coronavirus hit?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 09:12 AM PDT

Like many of you I was a couple weeks away from getting my business ready to launch when this Coronavirus hit. New reality is that we are probably being set back three to six months because of what is going on.

I might not have a job in the next couple weeks let alone being able to get my business off the ground. So what am I to do? What are you to do?

While many people are freaking out about this, and yes this is bad and I feel so bad that people are dying, as a society and as a country we will make it through this.

Will it be hard... yes. Will we struggle... yes. Could we be affected in our lives and in our families... yes. Is this a horrible situation... yes.

    But we will be okay.

Take this time with your startup to go through it and finish the things that you can get done, if you have content, blogs, or marketing that you can create, get ahead of it and put yourself in a better place for when you can start. If there are products that you can create get them done. If there is research you can do on your niche and market, get the research done. Do what you can...

Help your neighbors where you can, protect yourselves and your family, and most of all stay positive through this horrible situation.

    Hope this helps! John

Working at a startup w/ no equity - is this normal or am I being used?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 10:16 AM PDT

I'm an employee at an oil and gas data and research startup. Been here for 1.5 yrs, company's almost 6 yrs old. Took a pay cut to work here, was convinced the intangible benefits and accelerated career growth would make up for it. I know I'm one of the company's high performers, the only one who gets more projects and regular (small) pay bumps and bonuses. I was one of 2 promotions this year. I'm middle management so I have no equity but I work like absolute nuts all the time. I know startup life means more work, longer hours, and wearing more hats, but we definitely don't get any of the perks most startups get despite the long hours. It's gotten worse and worse (the company's been struggling to scale) to where I'm working 10-12 hr days at a minimum, every day, including weekends. Not surprising that it's taken a toll on my health and personal life.

Anyways, I just wanted to see if this really is normal startup life. If it is, what keeps you wanting to stay?

Delaware C Corp vs. S Corp

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 07:33 AM PDT

We incorporated as an S Corp last year as we read that it will give us significant tax benefits, but now I'm reading that investors prefer Delaware C Corps. Is it worth it to dissolve our S Corp and create a Delaware C Corp? Funding is no guarantee and creating a new structure will cost us money. Should we go for it? Or ignore the funding aspect and keep our S Corp?

We could launch without funding, but I'm not sure how far we could go without it. We could theoretically be profitable within a year, but everything is such a crap shoot right now, so you never know. We could end up needing funding to keep going.

    Thoughts?

Sunday’s Success Stories - Celebrate Your Successes From the Past Week: Anything goes, none too small!

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 06:06 AM PDT

Welcome to this week's Sunday's Success Stories Thread.

A lot of us get way too hung up on the destination and the fact that we are not there yet.

It is important to take a moment to reflect on a great quote from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., "The steps you take don't need to be big, they just need to take you in the right direction"- Jemma Simmons

This is extremely relevant to all of us in this community. We should all be more aware of the successes we achieve every day that carry us closer to our goals.

Celebrating these successes, no matter how small they are, allow us to stay motivated, focused, and happy while we struggle to achieve dreams of various sizes.

The purpose of this thread is to share our successes from the week with one another and have something to celebrate together.

So, let us know what successes you have achieved this week! Nothing is too small or insignificant!

#Because this is meant to be a safe place to support emotional and physical health there is a zero tolerance policy in effect. Be KIND. Be sure to report any conduct that is in violation of that key tenet.

Impossible to make the first step, how would you do it if you were me?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 05:18 AM PDT

    Hello,

I got an idea for many years now but keep procrastinating, I seems to be stuck and not be able to do the first step. I'm seeking advice here, as I can't find a team and therefore can't really discuss the project. I came to the conclusion that it will be a single founder startup.

Long story short, it would be an social media app, where people could create informational (review or advices) posts about their daily life, product, travels, fitness,... lifestyle in other word. Kind of an instagram in shape but mixed with reddit and amazon.

So basically I'd like to start small, I only got £15k to invest and I'd like to start with an MVP to raise feedback (which I know is not too much). I do not have any coding skills though, I tried to learn swift but I quickly realised that I won't be capable to create something working well and I'll waist my time. However I've design the app already through adobe xd, so I know more or less how I want it to look like.

My idea was to start an instagram account to talk about my project before developping the MVP, this MVP will feature registration, a feed, create an account, messaging, sharing, search, push notification, take picture and create a post. But now I try to find out an orignal way to do so. I'd like the communication to be different, to stand out. So I'm looking for marketing ideas and how to reach my first potential users but I'm overthinking way too much and can't be creative at the moment.

I'm not looking to raise fund right now, I'd rather start lean and see how it goes. I'm based in London UK so shouldn't be too late later.

So, to sum up, now I'd like to know, with the informations I gave you, how you would proceed if it was you because it seems impossible for me to do the first step and what marketing strategy you would adopt.

    Thank you

B2B SaaS - Is giving free extra subscription days a good incentive for a business to write a review/referral?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 04:31 AM PDT

    Hey

By giving free extra subscription days, am I under-valuing my product? I was looking to give maybe 5 extra days if they write a referral for capterra/g2 or something similar to that.

Is this "normal" behavior? Will the businesses(users) react negatively to that?

    Cheers
