Faked negative review - can anything be done?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 10:06 PM PST

I put my business (a real estate brokerage) on Google maps. I do not solicit reviews normally, because I'm busy working for my clients and have enough business to keep me going solidly without doing much advertising. Today, however, I got a notification of a 1-star review.

I log on, and there is no commentary. Just one star. From a person who, according to Facebook, lives a few blocks from my house, but whom I've never met. She was put in hospice care last September. I have never had a conversation with her, or any conversations about her property, nor any conversations about a home like hers from anyone.

Can anything be done to remove it?

Square POS System Credit Card Terminal

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 08:08 PM PST

    What's going on guys,

My family has owned a liquor store in North Jersey for 35+ years. As my dad slowly hands the reins over to me, I've begun to almost 'modernize' the store. I'm attempting to fully digitalize (or digitalize the most I can) the business in an attempt to make things more streamline and again, modern. One of the most important things I want to change is the point of sale system we have. It's old, the touchscreen barely works and my employees dread using it. So I have decided to look into the Square Register system. It seems great, easy to use, lots of fine tuning available... however there's one thing I don't particularly enjoy and thats the fees for credit card transactions. Square's fees are 2.5%+10cents.

My question, though it may seem rather amateurish (my first time running or partially running a business!), is, can I use the Square Register with the terminal I already have? Does using the terminal I already have make it kinda useless to get the Square Register?

I appreciate all your help guys! Take Care!

How can a small business compete with large companies on shipping?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 03:28 PM PST

    Hello,

First time poster here. I'm working in a bit of a vacuum and looking for some feedback from other business owner.

I've created an online platform for selling tires online, but I'm finding it increasingly difficult to compete with established companies in the space, and it all comes down to shipping logistics.

I know that I'm purchasing products at the same price as competitors (everyone drop ships from the same suppliers) but I can't compete with them on price due to shipping costs.

I believe that my shipping costs may be double what competitors are paying, and that's even after my negotiated rate with a carrier company.

So the golden question, how can you as a small business, get access to the same discounted shipping rates as competitors in the industry?

It seems to be in a chicken & egg scenario where, I can't get the discounted rates, until I get the volume, yet, I can't get the volume until I get the discounted rates.

Open to any suggestions and thanks for your time!

    Best,

    Jake

The average U.S. small-business owner has $195,000 of debt?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 05:59 AM PST

I saw this stat here https://c2fo.com/resources/vendor/relationship-amount-debt-business-success/

How are regular business owners in that much debt? I have no need for any debt over $40k and strive to be debt free ASAP.

What is the average business doing with all that debt?

Need feedback: Mobile app to arrange car service

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 06:25 AM PST

    Hi All,

I'm thinking about an idea for a mobile application and I wanted your advice. Here's what it does:

Imagine there is a particular service you need/want someone to do on your car but you don't know where to go, all you can do is to search in google maps and get some reviews to close your search and then getting in touch to each of them to request quotations, check availability, etc. I'm thinking about an app that you can search for a service (you give your car make and model) and automatically get quotations from registered shops in a particular area of interest, among the information that you'd find next to each shop you could see an overall rating, approx delivery time, available times to receive your vehicle, etc.

You can decide to contact the shop outside the app, but if you continue the transaction through the app it would be similar to Uber (you have made sort of commitment to buy). The good part of doing it through the app is that you'd be getting status on the service, at pickup you'd get a full report on the service made and have a couple of warranty days before the amount you paid is released to the shop.

An extra fee is charged to the customer, if he chooses to make the transaction through the app. The main audience for this app is those people who are afraid of being scammed and don't understand much about cars.

What do you guys think? Is it feasible? Would you use it?

    Does an Employee's Attitude Matter?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 12:18 AM PST

Would you guys accept a not so stellar attitude from one of your best employees? If the problem came up monthly and not daily? Not huge blowups but questioning management, getting angry/defensive when criticized, and not respecting her boss? We have tried talking to this person but they just can't seem to help themselves. Do you guys run a tight ship in this regard, or do you give you star workers some wiggle room because they mean so much to your company?

Anyone know a app/system for this?

Small Consulting Shop - One Year In

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 12:13 AM PST

I am looking for feedback from others on things I should be asking for or concerns looking into the future.

About one year ago, I joined a "startup" consulting firm focusing on a specific, niche expertise in insurance (actuarial). The firm started as me and the founder, who owns 100% of the equity. My employment contract for 2019 was as follows:

    • No base salary or benefits
    • Compensation (gross) paid as a percentage of overall firm consulting revenue, minus certain designated expenses, plus reimbursed approved travel expenses.

The revenue percentage was a sliding schedule: * the first $100k carved our entirely (0% to me) * then 50% of the next $200k * then 25% of the next $100k, 30% of the next $100k etc until rejoining at 50% for consulting firm revenue of the excess of $800k.

This schedule was applicable to all "earned" revenue in 2019, even if paid in 2020. The theory behind this was that most of the 2019 revenue was brought in by the founder to begin with, and he would be teaching me the business. Over time, I would expand my footprint and eventually be granted official partnership in the firm (at his discretion).

In addition to comp the contract binds me to a pretty brutal Non compete, wherein I cannot work for any company which our firm has marketed services to. This term is fairly vague and I am not concerned that it may limit me from working with 90% of our industry.

Later, the founder brought on a handful of other consultants with an alternative, simpler schedule for comp, the "firm" itself keeps 35% of billable revenue for these individuals, less expenses for laptops, certain items, etc. I benefit from this financially. On the other hand, I have found myself often managing these individuals to an extent, as both consultants work product is not yet 100% up to company standards. Additionally, I often manage other parts of the firm, such as legal invoices, interfacing with procurement, managing certain marketing events, etc. I am happy to own these things and other things in the long run as I continue to learn this business.

Actual firm revenue ended up around $550k, all things considered. I only was paid $140k through the year, but am anticipating another $35k this month for invoiced work at the end of 2019 which was only paid recently. This was a little below my expectations for 2019, I was hoping the firm would get up to $600k+ in the first year, but a lot of work (about $200k) was delayed into 2020. But about the same as what I made in my industry role which I left for this one. (Not ideal because i have no guaranteed salary, but not bad for a first year either). However, I believe The company could invoice as much as $800k this year (already working on about $250k in first quarter alone, with a reasonably strong pipeline to hit on second quarter work as well. The added consultants really didn't sell anything but have taken some overflow work over since December of this year.

That being said, the founder now wants to move my pay to a percentage of profits. In reality, this is not considerably different for 2019, but we're also looking to hire on salaried entry individuals once we land about $600k to $800k in signed work, it is obviously much different as the company will need to retain an actual cash balance to make payroll. This makes me very nervous since I don't have equity stake but I am now essentially an owner with no ownership, I get paid last but for no benefit. Also, the person would probably cost about $100k all in, plus expenses etc. While they can be billed out for around $240,000 of work per year, initially we'd expect a break even at best. Also, they'd need to be paid consistently obviously, whereas our cash flow comes in big chunks and is frequently delayed because someone didn't sign the right form, etc.

I have requested veto authority on any hiring of FT employees in my 2020 contract (which we have not finalized yet) as one form of compromise. Ideally, i would like some component of equity seeing as this makes me a risk taker beyond what I was in 2019.

Founder has in no uncertain terms expressed that he desires to retain all equity control for the time being but gave me specific guidance of performance items for me to focus on for me to become a bonafide leader of the consulting practice. His goal is to expand other areas of the firm and leave the consulting practice to me to manage, potentially with one other leader to be identified in the future.

He has also expressed his strong belief that he wants me to be a 50/50 partner, and would look to relinquish 50% of the equity at said time. My original offer letter also placed a benchmark to partnership: 25% of my sales contributing to $1,000,000 of firm revenue or more, and meeting all performance standards of the role. While I don't have reason to not believe him, I foresee this as a very expensive future compensation item for him, particularly if we thought we might be purchased by an outside entity (company valuation might be 3x firm revenue). I believe I can hit this milestone potentially by end of year, I am concerned his viewpoint may be 2-5 years out.

Nevertheless he was not open to some type of incremental equity this year or in any year for these stated reasons. Also, he tends to use examples from established firms we compete with for comparing equity awards, but my thought is that startups typically grant some amount of contingent equity to many of the initial key employees to compensate the risk.

I guess I feel as though, this is a terrific revenue opportunity for me, but I have major concerns with the equity issues and getting paid last of we have an actual payroll. I am currently working 70+ hours a week as well to "build" this business, but also feel a twinge in my heart because on paper I am building HIS business, although he has reiterated to me that the intent is for it to become OUR business. While I don't have reason to not believe him, as he is someone I have known for years, but I want to be sure I protect myself.

getting something to working, improve on it, aligning it?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 03:28 AM PST

figure out what marketing strategies works for others, and try to put together your own working marketing plan by trial and error. At least for it to work and bring in money, improve it by yourself as much as possible. Then get a marketing expert to fix the flaws and change the plan to be top notch. Do this in the entire business. Brand plan, Marketing plan, Product plan, Profit margin. Align the entire business towards one single goal. i.e making the most eco friendly, minimalist, easy to use, multi functional phone cases, laptop cases. Would you say this is how you'd consider to work well? What is your idea from starting from a blank slate and building a fully align business?

Would any of you pay for a marketing action plan? For example, for $2,000, you'd get an extremely thorough review of your current business and marketing situation, with a list of recommended actions, with facts to support why, and a few fully flushed out campaign ideas.

    building up a following?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 10:29 PM PST

whether that's building a following for your companies social media, increasing how many people share your product on their social media, your presence on forums. On the radar of niche websites, niche reviewers. Or for more mainstream big youtube reviewers and big websites. they all add up to a general idea of the companies following of people(awareness)

Is the idea to build increasingly unique products for people to share on their social media, and for people to talk about the unique product on their blog, on their websites, on their youtube review channel. Keep making better unique products, make unique branding so that I can try to make something that really catches on to more and more people. Is this the gist of what is necessary to get a lot of buyers?

    Expense royalty fees?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 10:19 PM PST

I was wondering if businesses were able to claim royalty fees to a franchise as an expense? Also using Uber eats there is a network access contribution which is 30% of the cost of the food sold. Could that be expensed as well?

Current Coronavirus Impact For Your Small Business

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 12:36 PM PST

Given the continued increase in Coronavirus cases, I am looking to see if others have felt an impact in their businesses?

I have spoken to a few small business owners in the manufacturing sector and they have all indicated some type of disturbance in their supply line that is impacting their ability to get products out to clients. But I was curious to see if other industries in the small business space have been impacted.

Looking for help naming a thrift shop

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 12:30 PM PST

So my gf and I are in the early stages of creating a local resale/consignment shop, and we're looking for some names to stand out a bit. We've already gone through a bunch of the variations that currently exist, (Platos Closet, Buffalo Exchange, Uptown Cheapskate, etc) and I'm not really fond of just following in everyone else's footsteps.

Right now we're stuck on some names that pop, but might not have the word 'Resale/Thrift/Exchange' and we're not sure if this is the correct route to follow.

One idea we have is "Neon Lucky", and if you'd like an explanation behind it I'd be happy to provide. But that is just an example of what we're thinking. I'd appreciate any name ideas you might have for an easy to brand thrift shop!

PS- I have worked in the resale industry for a few years so I have experience on how to operate one successfully, and we have a rent-free location that will actually be perfect for our somewhat unique idea on how to operate this in the beginning! I'm really just looking for suggestions to get the ball rolling in our brainstorming:)

Owner doesn't want to grow business.

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 03:26 PM PST

Hello all! I'm a sales manager and part owner for a small startup generator service company. We started back in August and so far we've got 8 small accounts with 2 very large accounts (around 200-300 generators each). Company grosses around $180k in the time we've been open and the owner doesn't want to grow. He's told me to quit picking up new accounts and that we have enough business that we don't need to grow anymore. It's really grinding my gears that he's slowing us down when we haven't met any legitimate obstacles that warrant us to cut back on networking and sales. We have 5 field technicians and 1 shop manager so it's not like we are having trouble finding mechanics and workers. I'm not sure what to do, but I'm not satisfied and I want to grow our business bigger but he's not letting it happen. I'd appreciate any input.

Should Graphic Designers be responsible of handling strategy or just designing graphics and executing what we tell them we want to see?

He also said it may not be a new logo that I need, but maybe a new set of social media assets or a new website all in which will raise my sales.

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 06:16 PM PST

I have a side business, that has been fairly low key. I have found that it could increase in the next year, taking over as a main income.

Colorado does not have a general business license, and I have already filed Trade Name paper work. Once I get those, I'll file for registering with Tax stuff.

My business is a Contractual, between me and a business or a person, that starts at 2k. I have an attorney that handles liability releases, and general law stuff around small business.

But as I sit making business cards for the first time, I ask, what tips would you have reddit?
