    Just not fast enough

    Posted: 29 Mar 2020 07:42 PM PDT

    Big 4, 1st year

During busy season, by the end of the night people are waiting on me to finish workpapers. They constantly ask me, "where am I at with it" "how much more time" as they are waiting for me to finish. I am working as fast/long as I can, really. But I am just not fast enough. It's a lot of pressure and doesn't make me feel good about myself. I'm thinking hopefully I can get faster or I need to spare everyone (and myself) and cut my losses. I would say it takes me double the time as my fellow associates. And when I feeling rush and extreme pressure I notice I make more mistakes.

    Has anyone felt this way?

Even if offers get rescinded and i end up homeless after graduation, they can never take away my free suitcase. It will make a nice addition to my van down by the river.

    Best job for extroverted accountants?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2020 05:48 PM PDT

Shutdown aside... I've realized that while I enjoy accounting, I don't really want a job where I'm asked to do work alone all the time and report back later. I really want to be solving problems with people and work on projects in groups. I also like hosting meetings and being creative. Not sure what day to day life at B4 will be like, but I'm really not getting that at my current small office.

What kinds of places can I go after one or two years' experience where people are extroverted and enjoy talking to one another? Am I better off moving into another area like finance or real estate?

    My confidence has been shot

    Posted: 29 Mar 2020 07:55 PM PDT

I had a 9/30 audit busy season that was pretty tough but I did well with it, got good reviews from my team and it got me promoted to senior in January.

January through March felt like the biggest shit show of my life. I worked on a 12/31 year end on areas I've never touched before (and were new to our team), with no set up or conversations prior to busy season, and was hit the ground running. I felt myself burning out staying till 1-3am every day but still kept at it because my two managers (who kept giving me conflicting information on priority items) wanted things done consistently. Things slipped on my end because I felt really overwhelmed and I know it wasn't my best work.

I got reviews back recently and it hit me like a truck. I know I didn't do great, but even with the benefit of hindsight I think both managers think I did a crappy job just because I felt overworked by the combination of both. Now that I'm back on my 9/30 I feel way more in control and competent, I know what's happening and I have a big picture understanding. Technically the managers on my 12/31 are my development team and so they control how my annual review goes for bonuses and raises. I just know it's gonna be shitty.

I don't want to deal with another 6 months of busy season just to prove to two managers that I've learned from this difficult experience. Internally I know that I'm competent and capable but I can't feel that way or believe it right now. I'm thinking about leaving (I know it's tough with Corona, I'm not running out the door or anything, just thinking about it), and all these thoughts are affecting my personal life too. Everything in life just feels scary right now. I don't feel ready or able to do anything because I'm scared something else is gonna come crashing down. Also having major imposter syndrome because of my promotion right into this experience.

I just needed to get thoughts off my chest. Anyone have any advice? Thanks all.

    I don't feel like I'm learning anything.

    Posted: 29 Mar 2020 01:32 PM PDT

I'm currently in my junior year of college and even though I have a great GPA, I don't feel like I'm learning anything. I can't retain all the information. It's the same thing every class, study for the exam, take the exam, then forget about it. The only thing I remember after the class ends is just a general idea. Is this normal or am I screwed come graduation and I start my career? I feel like I'm supposed to know every topic in the class to apply it to my career on the job.

Shitting bricks. Company sent an email over the weekend and I’m scheduled for a training call for tomorrow morning.

    Posted: 29 Mar 2020 05:19 PM PDT

Just venting/ranting/losing my mind. A couple of us started not long ago, a few others have been around 1-2 years. Just seniors and staff. I hope I'm reading too much into it, but stories going around of people being fired got me really worried lol. Especially the one where they had employees call the zoom number just to be greeted by an automated firing message. There was no email throughout the week, no talks with my supervisor about new projects or anything. Just new 'training' meeting for tomorrow morning.

We do forensics and insurance claims but I'm still worried and scared that this might be it. All well. Murphy's law I guess.

    TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF

    Posted: 29 Mar 2020 06:07 PM PDT

I am really having hard time answering the question "tell me about yourself". Most of the example online are with bigger position. Someone like me who has only done time work as a cashier can't relate to them. I have joined a few club but not any major position in them. How would go on and answer such a dreadful question

How is everyone charging their time now that we're WFH?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2020 11:30 AM PDT

I normally charge all the time I'm at the office but now that I'm working from home there are a lot more distractions like family, pets etc. so I don't think all the time I spend working would actually be billable

How are you all charging your time now that everyone is WFH? Do you subtract any of the time you take for breaks?

Can you collect unemployment if laid off from your job, but own an LLC?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2020 06:36 PM PDT

I work a corporate 9-5 job, but they are laying people off in great volume.

I also started a business (LLC) in February, which has thus far generated $5,000 in sales. My business partner and I have reinvested everything into the company, and never taken a paycheck. Due to the state of the world, we've cut our advertising budget to $0 and the business barely makes $200/week during this downtime. We are sitting on a bank account with a balance of about $300 and we're not advertising or anything.

My question is this: If I get laid off from my 9-5 job, am I still eligible to collect unemployment?

    I am in Texas, btw.

Where should I live for my public accounting job in LA?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2020 10:24 AM PDT

I have an audit job at an office in downtown starting in September and I don't know where to live. I've been looking at places around the office for less than $1500 but I'm not sure if this is the right move. I've heard that I should live near my clients but since I haven't started yet, I don't know who my clients will be. People have also told me that I should live in Culver City but I'm hesitant because of the commute. Please let me know if you have any advice/tips about finding the right place to live. Thanks!

    Big4 Promotion

    Posted: 29 Mar 2020 09:46 AM PDT

I am an experienced associate and I was planning to have discussions about my promotion aiming end of this year. I understand things are pretty crazy and there will be less bonuses and raises, etc. which I am fine with but is promotion out of the question given this madness? I have a virtual meeting with my coach next week, should I not even bring up the subject at all?
