Just said goodbye to two "seeking perfection" clients

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 05:49 AM PST

When I started my service business, I agreed to work at a lower price. This helped me get lots of new clients. Some turned out the good ones and some turned out the bad ones.

Now, that I already have a good amount of clients. I just said goodbye to two of my annoying clients.

They always talked to me nicely but one thing is common among them. They both want perfection and not ready to pay more.

It really feels great and I feel very much relieved now 🤗. Whenever I wake up and see that I have received emails from either of them, a part of me gets annoyed.

I got frustrated this Saturday and emailed both of them that we cannot work together anymore (I used a very nice tone btw). They were not expecting this and offered me to increase the price by up to 2X. The new prices they offered were a decent amount but I declined the offer because I know that 1-2 months down the line I'll be annoyed again.

I hate being called an entrepreneur

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 01:57 PM PST

I get it. We have to call ourselves something.

The issue here is that entrepreneurship is no longer being a business owner. It's expanded to anyone who desires to be an entrepreneur. To the point where people call themselves entrepreneur just because they "think" they will start a business one day.

The majority of people I have ever met who called themselves an entrepreneur publicly were those dude bros that watch way too much Grant Cardone. The same guys are the ones constantly crying out about how they don't have any good business ideas. Or even worse. Handing out business cards for eCommerce idea xyz and 3 weeks later they are pursuing business abc because business xyz got way too hard.

Now, I don't know about you guys... I never once referred to myself as an entrepreneur outside of the internet. Instead, I identified myself based upon the specific industry that I work in. Real estate investors call themselves real estate investors. Dentists call themselves dentists. Copywriters call themselves copywriters. Programmers call themselves programmers. And stock traders call themselves stock traders.

If asked what I do for a living, I never say "entrepreneur". Entrepreneur is a very vague term. In social situations people will ask you what that means. If you are unable to describe what your actual skills are then people will see you as a wantrepreneur/dreamer with no actual skills and they will tell you to go get a job.

It's totally understandable for people for are just starting out to want to come to subreddits like this and forums such as the fastlane forum. You've got to start somewhere and figure out what it is you actually want to be doing. And there is a ton of valuable advice that comes from places like here.

With that being said identifying as an entrepreneur is not enough. Participating on this subreddit or the fastlane forum subreddit is not enough to become successful.

Here is what I did. And what you really need to being doing:

    1. You need to identify your skills/talents. If you don't have any skills/talents, at least figure out what your hobbies are. Is there any way that you can provide value based on your skills/talents/hobbies? Should you first get a job in the niche and develop some skills/expertise before going out on your own?
    2. Join groups, learn from, and network with people in your desired industry. Hang out with coders if you want to code. Hang out with musicians if you want to be a musician. Whether that's offline or online or whatever... You aren't going to make it if you want to fix cell phones and you are taking business advice from truck drivers. You need to be as specific as possible as to where you are getting your information. If you play tennis it's useless to take advice from someone who plays golf. Look for a successful tennis player instead. You need to be learning from, doing business with, and building connections with people involved in your specific industry.
    3. Get good at what you do. If you are great at whatever industry that you do for a living, there is a good chance that you will make at least 6 figures. Maybe even make it to the 1%. At the very least you will do a lot better than the majority of "entrepreneurs" who are full of ideas and don't ever take action because they don't actually have anything of value.

In short, stop identifying as an entrepreneur. There is zero value in calling yourself such. Instead, identify with a skill set or an area of expertise that is profitable and stick with it until you are successful.

Entrepreneurs who are totally self-sufficient, how long did it take you to get to this stage?

Entrepreneurs who have their own thing going on, how long did it take you to get to this stage? Is like worry-free/comfortable and how long has it been since you had a regular 9-5 job?

I found a way to track links being shared on messenger apps. Is it valuable for others?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 11:39 AM PST

I was looking into my side-project analytics trying to figure out which user segment is clicking on the "share with friends" button so I can better target them.

Then, I realized there's a way to track links being shared on various chat / messenger apps (whatsapp, FB, slack, etc). I built a quick MVP that gave me some insights and I'm now thinking this could be potentially very interesting for many other businesses so looking into building a private beta.

It's working. I can know when people pasted my links on messenger apps based on URL Previews.

Now, here's the MVP I have in mind:

    1) A simple link shortener web.
    2) When your links are shared on these apps, I capture the information and display insights about which platforms are being share on (whatsapp, FB, slack, etc), countries, time of the day, etc.
    3) If the link is then visited on regular desktop/mobile browsers I can differentiate that and add on top of the "share" analytics. You'd be able to understand, in example, how "word of mouth" is impacting your traffic.

There are many use cases that one could derive from there and there's also a lot of privacy aspects to cover but for the moment I want to gather feedback on the actual value of such solution.

So, few questions for those interested:

    1) Do you think there's value on the above MVP? Which type of apps would benefit from this? (I'm assuming any business that really depends on viral content: news, communities, etc).

    2) Have you heard about any similar product or tactic to get this type of analytics?

    Thanks

Have you ever quoted a client too low and then had to ask more?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2020 08:06 PM PST

During a very busy and stressful day I gave a new client a quote. Afterwords I realized that I quoted them too little after reviewing the project in more detail. The service I provide requires me to use contractors. The contractors I usually use didn't end up being available, everyone else is over the budget (obviously my fault since I quoted too low and am still inexperienced).

After thinking about how to proceed, I ended up emailing them apologizing and stating I needed to increase my quote. I feel really badly about it. My company is a start up and I'm disappointed and very embarrassed that this happened. I am willing to take the financial losses in order to continue to give them a good service and not destroy my reputation. Does anyone have experience with something like this? How did it go? They haven't paid yet and there wasn't a contract, they just asked me to invoice when the work was completed.

Does anyone here run an online subscription business teaching people a specific skill. Eg home DIY?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 04:31 AM PST

    Hey guys,

Sorry for the long title. My wife is an amazing cake decorator. She mainly does weddings, but will occasionally take on birthdays, etc. I have had the idea to set her up with a videographer friend of mine and create a subscription business offering cake decorating classes.

Does anyone have a subscription business that teaches a skill? Eg home DIY, fitness classes etc.

Just want to hear more about the journey and what it entailed.

    Thanks!

    Offshore company

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 02:29 PM PST

Hello dear reader, I have a question. So, a few months now. I've been thinking about owning my own company. Recently I started to research offshore companies and the benefits that come with it. Before I make a move and call a company that would set it up for me, I want to ask here. With the created company, I could have the nominee service, so I would have a director and a shareholder. My question is, what would be my responsibilities be? Would my director source clients and staff? Would I just collect profit and pay the expenses? I can't find anywhere what my responsibilities would be. Would be glad if anyone here gave a proper rundown of how this works exactly. Thank you and have a blessed day.

Need advice / best practices on how to test pricing on a mobile app

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 02:28 PM PST

I have a question which relates to pricing a mobile application.

What is the most effective way to test prices on a mobile app? Do you actually change the price of the app while it is live in the app store and measure changes in your conversion rates? Or is there a way to get genuine/credible data on customer price preferences before launching?

It feels like anything "pre-launch" is not reliable data because we're not really understanding how the customer would truly behave if they saw the product in the app store.

For reference, my app is made for teens (age 13-16) who are frustrated with school by teaching them how to pursue self-directed learning. It basically works like an 'audio book' but is packaged into an app.

Small-batch, freshly roasted compostable coffee capsules delivered monthly - validity done!

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 02:07 PM PST

    Hey all!

As coffee aficionados & frequent users of Nespresso, we'd been toiling with the idea of a more guilt-free, sustainable solution to the already existing Nespresso capsules that we use on a daily basis. Researching the industry and sustainable alternatives in-depth, we'd come across compostable Nespresso compatible capsules. Along with our hobby of visiting different coffee houses around town, we'd finally come up with an idea of selling freshly roasted compostable Nespresso capsules on a monthly basis.

This leads us to today - we've now got our required supplies of fresh ,compostable coffee capsules, and have just validated the market using this survey on Google Forms https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScxtqs78n0CqHDZYReqbzTCsHYSph36hl8GQXL2t5R-idVw5Q/viewform . Now looking to build our website out, which platform is best to use for subscription based models?

And any further advice/heads -ups you can give going forward?

    Thanks!

What is the best alternative to print on demand sites like printful? The white underbase they use for direct-to-garment printing feels cheap and I'd prefer screen prints or heat press.

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 01:43 PM PST

I have no problem with the quality of their shirts when it's on a purely white shirt, because they don't need a white underbase for that, but if you want any other shirt color, they use a white underbase and it feels cheap and often looks terrible. It seems that all print on demand companies that use direct-to-garment printing do this.

Is there any alternative? I don't want to have to stock large amounts of inventory, but it seems that any screen printing is expensive unless you order in bulk.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

    Thanks

I’m tired of seeing people live the life that I want

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 01:41 PM PST

I'm currently a teacher and I hate it. I see so many people my age who are living the life that I want, but I don't know where to start. I know that I want to work for myself. I always have, but I've never known what to do, or how to get started, and that's why I'm so frustrated. I'm very business minded and love the idea of being my own boss. I would love to have my own rental properties and earn money that way. I'm also really into passive income and would love to do something with that as well. It's just that all of these jobs require lots of money (that I don't have) to start. Any tips for an aspiring entrepreneur?

How would you structure this deal?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 01:36 PM PST

One of my mentors is selling his luxury car dealership. He asked if I wanted to make some cash by helping him find a buyer.

Told me to make him an offer/ structure a deal that's fair to both of us and he'd sign off on it. He's willing to sell way under market value to get out of the biz and decrease the amount of hours he's working. Good guy, successful dealership but tired of the daily grind and ready to cash out.

Obviously will be a multi week to multi month endeavor that will involve lots of phone calls/ convos with people in my network. If I can pull it off, It's going to be a high 7 or low 8 figure sale including land, property, brand, and inventory.

How would you guys structure this deal? What would be fair to both of us?

Starting a radio station for free advertising?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 05:42 AM PST

Hello all, I have a business in a rural area, which is VERY touristy for 4 months out of the year. I have a 100' truss tower (not sure what they are called) on the property. The radio stations are absolute garbage in this area, and not what most tourists would like to hear...

So what does it take to buy the equipment, get the licensing, and run a small station on my property? I am adept at making adverts, and would plan on playing some more modern pop and contemporary artists, rather than what's out there now floating in the ether. I have a lot of businesses which would advertise with me as well. So it's not like I wouldn't cashflow.

I doubt I would make any real money, the main purpose would be to draw attention to my own business.

Examples of successful POD shirt business?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 12:52 PM PST

Can anyone link me some? I'm interested to see what they are like from the customer perspective.

Of course "successful" is subjective, so let's say any that have been running for more than 6 months, and are able to make consistent sales (if you are privy to that information, otherwise just the first criteria).

    Thanks!

    Starting a website like Uncrate?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 12:37 PM PST

I have an idea for a website similar to Uncrate but targeted to a specific niche, essentially a website where I post about a product. Minimal copy and mostly photos. Less of a review site and more of a check out this awesome product site. I'm assuming at this point people approach Uncrate with products to post about. But if I wanted to do something similar, could I just post about any product I want, using PR photos or images from the companies website? Or would it be better to email the PR department for usage/approved photos? I'm leaning towards the second option, but I'm not sure companies will get back to me quickly or they'll want to be posted about on a new website. I do think there's a lot of potential so I'm ok with a slow buildup of content and followers, just not exactly sure how to approach doing this idea.

Also, I know having a website built would be the way to go, but I'm pretty good with Squarespace. Do you think that would work or is it better to invest or partner with someone who can build a website from scratch?

Last question. With a site like this, I'd want to use affiliate links right? I get the general idea but haven't used them before. Any good tutorials or websites I should check out to learn more?

    Thanks for the help.

Do any directory websites in WordPress make good money?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 06:26 AM PST

There are so many directory websites out there and making one now is so easy. Especially in WordPress. Just put in a premium directory theme and you are good to go.

I would like to know if anyone here owns any such website and if it is a good form of income. Do you make enough money out of it? Are you able to handle it if you have hundreds of listings and thousands of visitors?

Freelancer making YouTube videos - should I just make my own channel?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 04:29 AM PST

Question: Should I make my own youtube channel instead of making videos for my client?

I am a freelance editor and movie maker, and for the last two or three months, I've been making videos for a client for their youtube channel. I make everything, from the script to the text to the thumbnail to the voice over. And the content has been going really really well. That being said, i'm very lowly paid (my fellow filmmakers who work at the TV station get paid thousands for their work) and now i'm looking at the ad revenue he is now making with greedy eyes.

The way I see it, I do everything and he is just taking the money on top. I accepted the job and I get that, but surely its better for me to explore this niche myself with the same video style and have the potential for unlimited growth rather than a paycheck. FYI I don't have a non-compete contract, just a regular gig.

My only problem is that i really like the guy who hired me and i work with him quite a bit, but I can't imagine a scenario where he would pay me more than double what I'm currently getting, even if the videos end up making 5-10-20x the amount. What do you suggest?

    How do I actually start?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2020 10:20 PM PST

So I'm really into entrepreneurship when I realized I want to give value to the world. Let's see, I have the initiative and I have the vision. The problem is, it's too broad, really, it's like "I want to help the world". My problem is, how would I focus on a thing? I know what I want but I don't know how should I really start. I'm currently a Software Engineer in a startup company, I'm having fun but I don't like the idea of working for someone. How do I put it? Like, their vision, is lacking for me and I really don't feel their passion that much, I just feel that they just have to do it, nothing more. I want to go out of my own way and create things for people. I want to fail and succeed, suffer and be joyful. I want to be one of the entrepreneurs who risked it all, experienced their lowest and eventually win against all odds.
    So in summary,
    > How do I focus in a specific field first?
    > How do I actually start?

If you think I still lack something, kindly state it. I'm always more than willing to listen to everyone.
