FYI Watch out for Shady Amazon Practices

    Posted: 08 Feb 2020 12:39 PM PST

Recently I went to sign up for an amazon seller account. Under their pricing tab, they have two accounts: Individual and Professional. The Individual has $0.99 fee per item listed and no monthly fee. The Professional account has no listing fees and a $39.99 monthly fees.

Anyways, I was signing up and no matter what link I clicked it sent me to the Professional account sign up. I was only planning on selling a couple of items to start and I wanted the Individual account. I contacted support and they said.

"You have to complete the registration for a Professional Seller account. While registering, you will be charged an initial subscription fee of $39.99. However, once the enrollment is completed, we can refund this amount to your Seller account balance."

They said I would have to start with a Professional account and then downgrade to Individual. I think that this is very misleading and unethical way for amazon to get more money out of their new sellers.

I’m opening my first business in 21 days and I just found out a friend who has been helping me is universally despised in the town I’m opening...

    Posted: 08 Feb 2020 11:19 PM PST

I am opening a board game store in a small town(around 3k people) and I've had a lot of really great and positive feedback. Website has had plenty of hits; Facebook page has 200 followers in less than one week of being active. I was feeling really good about it.

Today I was catching up on notifications for the business and I saw a thread from someone who had shared my grand opening event on Facebook. It was someone actively slandering the business because of a friend(I'm calling him Fred for an alias) of mine who has been helping me with build out and getting ready.

Fred has an imperfect past and struggles to make friends but I never realized how disliked he was in the town I'm opening up in. When it came out that he was involved in the store, the thread got out of hand with a lot of misplaced hate. As the post got larger it started getting more shares and I had to delete the event to avoid being euthanized before I'd even opened the doors. Now, to be clear he is not a partner, I am not hiring him, and I have no intention to let him speak on behalf of the store. He has just been talking the store up and talking about some of the behind the scenes stuff.

I'm torn because he really has been a huge help and I love the guy. I don't want to cut Fred out of my life for the sake of the business but it's looking like I might have to publicly disown him to recover from the smear campaign.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? What did you do? What do you think I should do? Obviously, being $100k in I can't just let things continue... but I'm at a severe loss finding a morally comfortable balance between work and personal.

How can my business pay for/expense an employee's graduate degree tuition?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2020 09:28 AM PST

Hi Reddit SBA. I want to offer an employee the ability to complete a graduate business degree.

My CPA says we can only cover up to $5,250 or so, but there are others in the program whose employers (large white collar services companies) directly pay the tuition for them. How can I do this and expense more than just that $5,250 amount? We are an S-Corp if it makes a difference.

    Thanks in advance!

    Buying into a business question

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 01:52 AM PST

I'm very new to all this so please bare with me!

Back in December I started a job working for a small start up. I loved the job but owner was pretty flaky.. constantly telling us he was running out money, changing his mind about our pay, letting people go, disappearing for days and then coming back and changing his mind about the direction of the company. Well, last week he finally told us he was done with the company and he was going to move onto something else.

So, I said I would take it over... he at first sounded okay with it since he was planning on walking away but now he wants me to put some money into it and him remain co-owner. Okay fine. So here's the deal.... I need to figure out what's fair of me to ask here. Basically, he has put 20k into the company and he said if he was to sell it to me, he would want 40k USD. I do not believe the company is worth this... it's not making any money. He wants me to put in 5k USD (6650 CAD for me), as a starter percentage of the company. I would still be doing all the work, and he would be putting absolutely no more money into it (unless we become successful and start making money), and he would be giving me a couple hours a week of his time. He said I should come up with some financial goals that I have to hit in order for me to gain more and more of the company and aim to own 30% by the end of the year. The company does have a small social media following, and a small email list. But like I said, we're not making money right now.

As mentioned above, I am new to this... but I feel like he's delusional. I'm happy to put money in and let him keep some ownership/revenue since he did put money into it and has set a foundation for the company. So my question is... if I put in 6550 of my money to be used solely towards building the business, how much of the company should I ask for? How much revenue would he earn, I earn, and how much should I be putting back into the business? AND, how can I gain more of the company over time? I hope this all makes sense and I hope I'm not being greedy, feel free to ask me anything!

Thank you so much for any help you can provide!!

    Profit Sharing?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 03:41 AM PST

This question is more for the larger size of small businesses, a few million + in revenue.

We have experienced a very, very fast growth rate at my company and our employees absolutely bust their ass. The culture is fantastic with young, hardworking people. I'd like to make sure we can retain this group as some of the startup craziness subsides and align everyone towards a profit goal.

We are set up as an LLC with just a few shareholders. Does anyone have experience setting up an employee pool? I'd like to have something in place for the current group while leaving room for growth and new employees.

    Thanks!

    Health Insurance Options?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2020 08:34 PM PST

My family and I are wit's end. My wife and I both work for small family businesses that don't pay our health insurance (both of our families own each business). We have two small children and seem to spend a decent amount of time at the doctor's office. We are currently paying over $2100 a month for mediocre coverage. We can not afford to pay this much, it's ridiculous. We are exploring options and could use some help. We live in WV. Someone told us to check out Christian Health Ministries which isn't an insurance company they just reimburse you after reviewing your claim which can take up to 120 days. We would be responsible for anything under $500. We are desperate for another option and hope someone might be able to provide some helpful information

Besides getting a business license in my state, is there anything else I need to do or know about being a freelance artist selling services and creative goods?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2020 06:02 PM PST

I'm in Washington state near Seattle. I just want to sell my services as a self employed creative that also makes art stuff to sell. Legally speaking I'm kind of lost about what I need and how to get it all in order.

Newbie question: How does one hire and use an accountant?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2020 11:50 AM PST

I'm in the process of starting a wedding photography business, and am a bit intimidated and unsure of how to manage the financial side of everything - from taxes, business expenses, and general management. I understand this is what accountants are for. I'm just wondering how that all works when I go to hire one.

Do I just google local accountants in my area? Then pay them as I give them my receipts, bank statements, etc. at the end of each month and they organize it into a P&L statement or something like that?

LF a program or app or website so I can send quotes to clients for free

    Posted: 08 Feb 2020 10:59 AM PST

So I'm really into saving money for my business

For invoicing I use an app on my phone called wave which gives me free invoices, that look professional which is working great.

Now I'm looking for something similar for quotes, if it's an app I can use on my phone that'd be great.

I'm looking for something that I can write up a quote with, with my logo and email it to a client.

I want the app or program or website to be free.

I know this might not be possible but if not please recommend an economical service that you use that doesn't cost too much.

    Thanks

    Insurance Audit?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2020 07:33 AM PST

I recently closed a business in December of last year. I then of course cancelled our insurance as well. We had a very basic general liability policy, (commercial cleaning, nothing fancy or any big equipment, think nightly janitorial) and had under 20 employees. Our insurance provider, Nationwide, is asking us to complete about 10 pages worth of general information they are calling an audit.

If I am not anticipating any sort of premium refund and do not plan on doing business with them in the future, what is the benefit for me to complete this and are there any repercussions? I am continuously getting emails/calls. I am assuming they want this info for compliance purposes, the opportunity to say we owe, or to sell the data. I do not see any upside for completing this. Has anyone had experience with this and decided NOT to complete the audit?

Adding an ATM to my shop?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2020 10:56 AM PST

Hello, I have a small shop in northern CA and I am interested in buying an ATM. Does anyone have any insight or advice? I looked online but most articles seemed to come from resellers and only spoke of the pros, not necessarily the full picture.

Any help or guidance is greatly appreciated.

My Web Agency is Closing Up Shop: How Would You Feel if You Were My Customer?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2020 07:26 PM PST

TL;DR; I've had enough of being in business for myself. I've taken a job, but want to leave my customers in the most responsible way. But I don't know what that is. My business also has value (ongoing retainers, web hosting, etc.) and would like to sell it. I feel like i have three options:

    1. Contact my customers. Let them know what's happening. Let them choose their destiny. If I do this I have no way to gauge the ongoing value of my company, making it harder to get any value out of it in a sale.
    2. Sell my business, transition everything to a new company, and let them know after the fact my business has been acquired, but the transition means nothing changes for them.
    3. Sell my business, say nothing. Whoever buys it can decide how to tell existing clients if they tell them at all.

I want out. But I want to do it in a way that does right by the people that have been loyal to me for years.

    Best way to manufacture stickers?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2020 02:53 PM PST

As the title says, I'm looking to make stickers. I have been using redbubble, but I just had a friend buy 2 stickers of mine for $10. $10 for 2 stickers!? Most of it was shipping which is absolutely ludicrous, so I'm looking for another way to get my stickers out there that ISN'T redbubble. Does anyone have any experience with this?

    Need help with facebook ads

    Posted: 08 Feb 2020 03:40 PM PST

I ran my first facebook ad today, and it was a complete bust. No sales, and only 61 website visits. I just don't know where to go from here. I'm working with a tight budget. I'm running a clothing company, and I know I'm not gonna be rich in two days, but I need to be able to make enough to stay afloat for the next two days.

    Thank you.

I've been running a little residential painting company by myself with help of some others, on the side of my full time job as a painter. It's starting pick up more and more as time goes on and becoming more legit. From a professional and legal standpoint I'd like to make sure going forward I start doing everything legit. I now am starting to have someone work for me and do my jobs during the day a lot while I'm at my full time job. I operate in PA. Not even sure who is best to call for insurance and what kind, business license, bank account, etc.

LLC partnership taxes deductible on personal taxes?

This is my first year filing taxes for my LLC and there doesnt seem to be a lot of info on this (at least that I found). But can I deduct business expenses from my personal return? I talked to an accountant firm in town and they gave me some info but when I asked about that they had no idea. Any info is appreciated.
