    Any entrepreneurs here on antidepressants?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 10:26 AM PST

    Hey everybody,

I (M/21) have always prided myself in my obsessive personality, which always allowed me to totally immerse myself in my work in business/studying (18 hours per day sometimes). I have dealt with OCD almost my entire life (fear of germs, ritualizing, crazy hand-washing, fear of hiv etc.). These were only "phases" as I call them, so I always managed to snap out of them. When channeled in the right direction, my OCD always gave me the advantage over everybody else. However, my OCD can also be extremely debilitating at times (health anxiety in my case).

Just recently, I experienced a relapse in health anxiety (long story) during college while also running a business on the side (I probably burnt myself out, since I was putting in 100+ hours per week). My anxiety became so severe that I had to take a low dose of an SSRI (antidepressant) and it helped tremendously with the obsessive thinking. I am in a much better place now, and I am also in therapy.

I have always been a passionate entrepreneur, but I do feel less of myself now for taking antidepressants. I always thought of entrepreneurs as strong individuals that had everything under control, especially mentally. I do fear that I will not be as successful because of it. I am scared how it will affect my work ethic, but I just had to take them otherwise I would have dropped out of uni probably. I was on antidepressants 1.5 years ago for about 6 months for the same anxiety (without therapy) but it just came back. I have been following Grant Cardone for about 4 years now and he always talks about "using his obsessions" instead of denying/drugging them, which I also want to do but in my case I get severe anxiety when I start obsessing about health-related stuff.

Are there any other entrepreneurs out there that have to take some kind of medication for their mental health?

How would you handle a business name like E + A when it comes to business name, DBA, web url, etc? Or, how does using symbols impact name, DBA, use in marketing, etc?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 05:55 PM PST

I'm trying to come up with a business name for my music related company.

    I'm considering the following. A standard technique for counting 16th notes in music is to say '1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a.' Each number is a beat. The 'e + a' represents the remaining 3 notes in each beat to make 4 notes total per beat. In a standard 4 beat measure this would mean 4 beats X 4 = 16 notes.

You would say the '1 e + a' like 'One E and uh.'

So I am considering naming the company E + A. You would pronounce the name as 'E and uh.'

I can't use the + in the legal name nor web url so I was thinking of forming the company name as Eanda and expressing the name similarly in a web url.

Would I still need a DBA if I use the E + A in my marketing collateral and not necessarily a 'name?' I would pronounce the E+A as Eanda always. Not 'E plus A' or 'E A', etc.. It would appear as E + A on my signage.

Kinda wondering what I should be thinking about here if I go ahead with this as the business name when utilizing a symbol in this manner. I could just scrap it all together and just go with Eanda on marketing material too, but then I go back to, 'well the E + A would still be cool and viable as a logo.'

I can't use '&' in web url's either so I might as use the proper '+' that musicians use when transcribing 16th notes.

Would need to consider social media account names as well here. It would likely have to be the Eanda format

Hope that all makes sense. Would love your thoughts.

    Thank you.

Looking for mileage tracking app recommendations

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 02:45 PM PST

My business requires me to do quite a bit of driving. I've been using a notebook to track my miles but it's getting kind of tedious so I was wondering if any of you could recommend a solid mileage tracking app for Android. I'm willing to pay for the convenience. Thanks.

Edit: why did this get down voted? What, is this not a good enough question or something?

Packaging and Posting (in the UK)

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 04:32 AM PST

I'm planning on selling my first item online on Depop, but I'm unsure on the logistics of posting my item. Do I wait until my item has been purchased by someone, then I organise the postage (getting a box and buying the stamps etc.), or do I organise that now, before my item is sold, but then isn't that a risk if no one buys my item?

    Thanks

    Private Courier Service

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 12:27 AM PST

    Hello,

I have been tossing around the idea of potentially staring a private courier service. I live in a CA and I believe the need for this type of business is always in high demand. Another thing Is I love driving. With that said, I would like input from people who know this business and what it would take to get started? What sort if insurance would be required? What would be a good starting point? I need some advice. Thank you!!

Feeling bad for charging for work done

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 02:56 PM PST

Hey folks, I run a vintage motorcycle shop that specializes in Honda singles, twins, and fours, and recently took on a 1989 Goldwing that's a bit more than I can chew. I personally know the owner so it makes things a little more difficult for me. Initially the job was just suppose to be a carb cleaning, tune-up, and get it ready for the road (it had been sitting for almost 10 years) I already made it clear to the owner I'm not super comfortable with Goldwings and I'm not very familiar with them, but he wanted me to do the job anyways. Long story short I got the bike to run but it smokes like and old steam train, I think it's burning oil and needs the heads and valved rebuilt and machined.

I dont feel comfortable doing this job or even being the one to call the shots on the head rebuild. The current bill is at about $550 (would have been almost $1000 but I took 5hrs labor off because it's still not technically fixed). I still dont feel super comfortable charging that much, I'd like to just let it go for no charge, but I really put a ton of time and parts into it. I'm already out a lot of money on this job. Would I be in the wrong for charging him for work done? I've never been in this situation before lol, I've always been able to complete every job that rolled in the door.

Business structure of food import/distribution in the US

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 06:12 PM PST

    Hello everyone

I'm in the process of moving my food import/distribution from the middle east to the US.

In the Middle East, we imported certain brands and hired sales reps (salaries were low compared to the US) who went around to small supermarkets and either sold them the items or with a consignment agreement. After deducting my costs of items and shipping, we made 30% and retailers made 70% of the final price. Things were easier for us since we owned our warehouses and salaries were low compared to here.

Anyways, I have been studying the US market and FDA for a while and I came with the following: 1- As an importer, I will have to sell my items to wholesalers who will sell them to retailers. In this structure, I'm not sure how to structure the profit this way. 2- consignment seems to be rather difficult for the large amount of retailers and distances between them. Also bookkeeping will be harder to keep up with since we are starting from scratch here and will either outsource most of what we have to do or do it ourselves. 3- since larger stores are available here, I thought I could sell my items in the price I offer to wholesalers if they purchase larger quantities like wholesalers.

Could anyone who has experience help me in the thought process?

    Is CSA Certification required ?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 11:19 PM PST

    Hi Everyone

I am looking to import aquarium products such as LED lighting and filtration into the country. But before I do so I need an opinion or facts surrounding the issue of CSA certification in Canada. I am very new to this process and any help will be appreciated. Sidenote... the products are all CE certified.

    1) Is CSA certification required or is it a guideline ?

    2) If the answer is yes to #1 am I out of luck ? or is there another way this can be done,

    Thank you !

Advice on starting a custom women's workout clothing line.

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 04:41 PM PST

TLDR: I want to start a modest clothing line for female athletic clothing but don't know where to start.

Hey guys, I hope someone here has some sort of an idea of how to go about this. I've always been into fashion and have started my own clothing line that honestly didn't go anywhere. I now know why and one of the biggest faults I had was not knowing my target demographic.

Now it's different. I know what my target demographic and I know what the pipe line goal is. Starting it is the hard part and here's why: 1.) I'm low on funds. One sample costs $100+ with the possibility of it not coming out how you want. 2.) They need to be custom made! The clothing I want to make and sell is to cater to women who want to dress modestly but specifically for athletic wear. Think a windbreaker (for running) or a workout shirt (for the gym) that is custom cut and sewn to be a longer length and not as tight.

I have no experience in creating Tech Packs (blueprints of clothing).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Personally liable for full lease term?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 09:23 PM PST

Suppose a small business set up as an S-Corp becomes unprofitable in the second year of a five-year lease. Would the landlord be able to come after the small business owner(s) personally for the remaining rent or would the liability protection of the S-Corp limit the landlord's ability to sue to strictly the assets of the business? Would the same hold true for an LLC?

How to value a business I am looking to purchase? What red flags should I look for

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 07:51 PM PST

Hey everyone! I am looking to buy a fitness business from a person. How do I go about valuing such a business? It has a decent brand that they are not selling and just planning to shut down. I will be buying all the equipment from them and taking over the lease for the space that is in a good location. How do I go about valuing this? I would guess its just the asset price on the equipment and then something for the right to take over the lease but not really sure so thought I would get some guidance from more experienced peeps.

    LLC help

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 07:35 PM PST

Long story short i want to start a LLC for my business of renting cars. I don't have an actual business address so should i just use my home address? I fear that might be considered piercing the corporate veil. Also i wanted to use part of my mortgage/utilities as tax deductions but was told not to because there would be no separation between personal and business assets which would make forming an llc useless. Any insights would be great.

Legal vs Fictitious Name of DBA

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 03:45 PM PST

So I was in a hurry last year to create an LLC. I'm branching out and had a major client wanting to work with me. I couldn't come up with a business and just created the LLC as my First Last Name, LLC

I got a business account, found the required insurance for the work, set up forms, payment and contracts/scope of work with the client - but I'm feeling like a different business name is better and more professional than just my name.

Are there any downside to making the change? I read that as long the business is not changing, I'll keep the EIN. But I also came across Fictitious Names or "Doing Business As " DBA as another option. I'd rather not bother the client with a name change on forms.

If I DBA with different name. Can I just set up a business email with that name domain and business cards and call it good?

    Thanks

Currently setting up our new office space and I have a question regarding Internet/VoIP/Phone services

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 06:33 PM PST

Hi entrepreneurs! I have a boring question for you. I am in the process of setting up our office, and I am being forced to go with one particular internet provider because there are no other options in our area for business internet. I know which internet speed package I am going with, but where I am having a hard time is whether or not I go with dedicated phone lines, or VoIP. If I understand the difference, with VoIP I can add lines and depending on the package, I may have to pay for more lines. With dedicated phone lines, I would need to have someone come in to install any additional lines, does that sound correct? With VoIP are their any physical lines that would also need to be installed? Does anyone have any opinion one way or the other about VoIP vs. dedicated phone lines?

Edit to add: Just like another poster mentioned, not sure why my post got downvoted. It seems to be happening to posts that have legitimate small business questions. It's frustrating and makes me not want to post any questions in this sub.

    Past Due Delaware C Corp

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 06:23 PM PST

I incorporated a company a couple of years back for a startup that I was working on, however, we never managed to turn a profit, and I ended up starting a new project.

Anyways, I realized that I never filed taxes for the C Corp and that now my franchise taxes are overdue (I started this company when I was 18 so it explains the lack of knowledge of regulatory and filing requirements).

Is there any harm to just leaving it and letting it go? I read somewhere that if you don't file for 2 years the C Corp is just automatically dissolved. Or do you recommend that I pay the overdue fees and then pay to dissolve the company? Why?

Plan on opening business. I have questions on the legal side of things of ownership.

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 04:32 PM PST

It'll be a small production company. I'm going to be owner and I plan on hiring a good friend as an editor. She wants to co-own it but she's on a student visa. That brings me to my first question, is that possible?

She mentioned a friend who's already a business owner that wants to get involved and help run this one I plan on starting. She's giving me the impression that it'll all be shared between us and split the earnings evenly. He's not involved at all in the industry I'm interested in and I'm getting a gigantic impression he's in it for the money. This leads me to my second question, what are the legal implications if somebody does get involved in legal ownership?

I asked my dad what his thoughts were and for any advice. He said no to all of it.

Has anyone else realized that talking about price points with a customer when you work for someone is incredibly easy but very difficult when it’s your business?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 12:10 PM PST

I lately had to get rid of one of my sales reps which has me writing proposals the past couple months and noticed this.

I remember being in sales for a company out of college and it was incredibly easy when a customer asked "how much is it" to respond with a firm price with no hesitation.

Yet now that i'm in year 4 of my business, when customers request a quote, I find it much more difficult to send out a firm price quote. Almost as if I need to provide a discount or end my quote with a "if pricing is an issue, I have the ability to work with you on a price" type of statement.

Where does this feeling come from? Pride in my business perhaps? Never once had an issue sending out set pricing in the field as a rep before! Anyone else ever experience this?
