The tax assessor is asking for proof of insurance, but insurance company wants the title of the car. How do I make both happy?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 02:06 PM PST

My dad is giving me his truck for free, we filled out a gift affidavit and application for a title. When we went to the tax assessor, she said that I need proof of insurance before she can accept the paperwork and apply for a title. The insurance company says that I need a title in my name before I can purchase an insurance policy in my name. How do I solve this chicken and egg problem?

    This is my first car.

Getting work in london with no london experience

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 03:56 AM PST

    Hi all,

Can anyone tell me how difficult this might? All of my experience is in regional irish offices either broking or underwriting.

The CII has special qualifications for the london market and most employers seem to want london experience. What are the differences? Are the london qualifications essential?

I have CertCII status (converted from my irish qualifications).

    Thanks

Scratched a car with a uhaul. Please help!!

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 06:23 PM PST

Hello. I was at a gas station right before returning my uhaul where I scratched the rear bumper of a car with my uhaul. The uhaul was totally undamaged since the impact was from the rear metal frame of the uhaul. My insurance denied coverage for the claim filed by the other party since it was a uhaul. The other party gave me a quote which is very high. I'm hardly making ends meet and honestly I cant afford it. I offered to pay his deductible but he claims he has a very high deductible too. What are my options here? Am I liable to pay such a high amount? How can I get out of this by paying the least possible amount. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Driver ran stop sign and T-Boned my car. Insurance says 50% at fault.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 07:18 PM PST

I live in Ontario. I was at a 4 way stop when I observed a car slowing down at a speed that would allow them to safely stop. As I proceeded through the intersection the driver did not stop at drove into the center and towards the rear of the car. My car was traveling east and the other car was traveling north. There was no witnesses except me and the other driver. My phone was dead so I couldn't take any pictures of the accident. I tried to get police to arrive on scene but they said without any injuries I just have to go to the reporting center. Insurance adjuster says that they can't determine who is at fault and put me 50% at fault.

I am trying to fight this because it would be impossible for someone at a stop to accelerate to 15+km/h in the few meters between the stop sign and where my car would be driving on the right side of the road. Even if the person did floor the gas and manage that how can I be at fault when I'm already practically through the intersection. What kind of evidence can I collect? I was thinking I should go back to the scene and take measurements and pictures of the road but I don't know if that will help. I think the other person is claiming that I ran the stop sign (which is not even possible given the physical evidence).

Denied Short Term Disability because of Previous Car Accident- Need Advice!

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 07:26 PM PST

    Hi

I applied for Short Term Disability through my employer during our recent open enrollment period. I work for a small company and don't qualify for FMLA not state coverage. My partner and I would like to have a child soon and I applied for STD coverage with the idea that I would use it for maternity leave post baby (I am female). I completed a ton of research on the policy to ensure coverage for this and worked with a third party benefit specialist to confirm coverage with the potential insurer directly. I knew I would be applying for this about six months before the open enrollment period. I had a clean bill of health- no issues in my medical history at all.

Two months before my open enrollment period, I was T-boned by an insured, unlicensed driver. I was OK but opened an injury claim because I hit my shoulder against the door pretty hard. I went through all the correct motions- went to Urgent Care the next morning (the accident was the previous evening), dealt with the stress and hassle of dealing with an injury claim rep (they took a week to get back to me!), and received nine weeks of massage therapy sessions twice a week for a soft tissue injury. The massage therapist I was seeing retired at the end of my nine weeks and encouraged me to see how my shoulder felt without getting worked on twice a week and see how easing back into my personal exercise routine went. She encouraged physical therapy to rebuild strength if I felt I needed guidance. That's where I am now: attempting to get back into my routine (yoga twice a week and a general active lifestyle with hiking, two dogs, etc). It's been OK but my shoulder is definitely not what it was.

The holidays happened and in the midst of them, I received a letter of denial of STD benefits. I requested further detail of why and was informed it was due to my car accident and injury claim. I completely understand this.

My question to the reddit world is: can I include this denial of STD in my request for an injury claim financial settlement? How can I do so?

Things to note: I'm not currently pregnant. Just a super planner trying to do it with a plan in mind as I can't afford to lose the income.

My accident claim and injury claim are under my Uninsured motorist coverage. I don't believe they've had any luck in recalling funds from the driver or his family (he was sixteen). So it's not like my insurance company has another insurance company to battle- this would be my insurer paying me out of my Personal Injury coverage.

There are other things to itemize in my demand letter like time I had to take off work to go to Urgent Care, my PCP for the referral for post-accident treatment, DMV to report the accident, massage appointments. I was provided a rental car while my car was fixed but it was an economy sedan that didn't compare to my SUV (I'm aware this is a result of my own coverage). Obviously personal and emotional stress of the whole accident.

I have an official letter from the STD insurer stating that I was denied due the car accident.

Any advice here? Frankly I'm super bummed that I'm not uninsurable for STD coverage and lost out on an opportunity to recoup income if I indeed get pregnant.

    Thanks!

Teen stepson (17 almost 18) totaled 2 cars and now his friend is letting him borrow his car

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 12:56 PM PST

My stepson, age 17, totaled his vehicle in September 2019. We will call him Dan. Dan was found "not at fault" from the other person's insurance, but it is still a ding on Dan's driving record for "failure to yield". My husband, his father (lets call him Jack), let Dan borrow Jack's truck to get to school and 11 days later, Dan rear-ends someone and totals the truck. So we are at 2 totaled cars in 11 days.

These actions showed us that Dan isn't driving responsibly, and therefore we took the money from the insurance payout from the first totaled vehicle and have it in savings for him. We took a portion of the insurance payout to reimburse for the new hybrid battery we had paid to put in Dan's vehicle about 2 weeks prior to the accident. This is not a vehicle that is titled to Dan, it is in Jack's name, and Dan has not financially contributed in any way to this vehicle. We let Dan know that he will have to save up for 6 months of insurance payments to prepay us (Dan has an issue with paying his half of his car insurance) and that we have a friend that will give us an older vehicle for $50 once Dan saves up this insurance money. We also told Dan that we will match him in contribution up to the amount of insurance money in savings if he wants to save up money and get a different, newer, vehicle.

Today, we see that Dan has borrowed his friends car (let's call him Leo) to come home from school. Dan is a senior and doesn't have a full schedule, and Dan asked to borrow Leo's car to drive home after school while Leo is still in school. Dan will then will go pick Leo up after school is out. We indicated to Dan that we do not think this is a good choice, but he insists it is fine and he will pay back Leo if he gets into any accidents. Looking at Dan's track record and how he recently was fired from his job, we have serious concerns about him borrowing any vehicle.

QUESTION 1: What would the car insurance implications be if Dan got in an accident in Leo's car? Who's insurance would cover it? Our insurance (which includes Dan) or Leo's insurance? I don't see any way to stop Dan from borrowing his friend's car....

His brother (16 yo, lets call him Mark) is now about to get his drivers license and their mother will be supplying the vehicle for Mark. She will also be splitting the insurance costs with Mark for this vehicle that is in her name.

Dan has said that he wanted to be able to borrow Mark's vehicle, which I highly doubt Mark will let Dan do, based on the Dan's driving record this year, but...

QUESTION 2: What would the car insurance implications be if Dan got in an accident in Mark's vehicle, under his mother's insurance? Would that go on her insurance or ours? She lives in a different state and both boys live with us over 90% of the year, if not more.

EDIT: Added fake names to help be less confusing :)

Mom found at fault for a car accident, but the other driver was uninsured.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 10:39 PM PST

So my mom was found at fault for a car accident. The story she told me was that she was in a street with three left and three right lanes. She was in the middle lane when she felt a car hit the right side of her car, which is a Yukon XL, and the next thing she saw was a small sedan drive into the side-walk behind her. Luckily no one was hurt, but a small dent was left on the side of her car, and the front-side of the other car was totaled.

My mom told me that the other guy was visibly heated and yelled at her for merging into his lane, which she tells me she didn't since she was just in the middle lane the whole time, and that he didn't have any insurance. They exchanged information, took pictures of the scene, and my mom reported the accident to the police and her insurance. In the pictures, the guy had a 9-year old in the front seat without a booster or anything.

The very next day, the guy went to my mom's place of work and started yelling at her through the plastic screen about how it was her fault and that she should take responsibility, since my mom does money orders at a store, and the guy was kicked out by security. My mom didn't report that incident to anyone because she wasn't sure if she should. The guy blew up my mom's phone with texts for a couple days afterwards calling her a bunch of profanities and the like, and we still have those texts.

The guy bought insurance afterward and his new insurance bought his story, and afterwards my mom's insurance bought his story as well, which will land my mom with some fat premiums. They said the story from the other guy is more convincing, and that the pictures line up more with it. As an outsider of this event, is there anything that I can do, or tell my mom to do?

Reasons for a car to be written of as totaled?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 06:19 PM PST

Hi, so I'm looking to buy a car, and found a very new truck for a really good deal. The catch is that it has a salvaged/rebuilt title. It is from a dealership that specializes in salvaged title cars. Some cars they fix up, some they sell as is. The truck in question is being sold as is, with the only damage being a dented rear quarter panel and a dented tailgate. As far as my understanding of how car insurance works, this should not be sufficient damage to "total" a nearly new truck. When I asked the salesman about it, he told me this:

Say you have a $30k truck, and it is in an accident causing $5k in damage. The insurance company then gives you, the owner, the choice to either repair the damage, or forfeit the car as "totaled" and they buy you out. This is how you can end up with a nearly new vehicle with very little damage and a salvaged title.

This is contrary to my understanding of how car insurance works. I've always assumed the insurance company made the decision whether to pay for repairs or write the car off as a loss and would only total it if it becomes too expensive to repair versus to replace. Is the salesman bullshitting me or is this an accurate scenario? I'm basically trying to rule out the possibility of buying a salvaged title car that has been in a major accident. Thanks for any help and responses.

[Question/Hypothetical] What if my car is totaled from someone's reckless driving. Their insurance offers my car's actual value but it won't be enough to cover car loan. Now what?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 09:59 PM PST

Do I still pay the remaining balance off my vehicle while I'm left with no vehicle?

Should I sue them or litigate for a higher estimate?

Why is that the case even though accident is at no fault? It seems I'm being punished; left with no vehicle replacement.

Where do my insurance get involve?

[Edit] What happens if you were injured?

Final progressive interview for adjuster trainee position

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 02:01 PM PST

I applied for the progressive adjuster trainee position about a week ago. I passed the online assessment and then the on-demand video questions. I got asked to do a webcam interview with the managers tomorrow and am wondering what questions they will ask since most of the STAR type questions were asked in the on-demand video questions. They also sent me a background check email with the interview invite.

I really don't want to mess this up as I did the final GEICO role-play interview yesterday and got the email today I failed lol.

    Thanks!

    Should I get a lawyer?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 06:51 AM PST

I made a post yesterday about my situation. Essentially, fault has been laid on me for this accident (which I disagree with). My claim agent said he'd call me back yesterday with the final decision but he never did. I found out by contacting the other insurance that I'm found at fault. I also emailed my claim agent yesterday around noon with no response. I emailed him again this morning- no response yet. Should I get a lawyer? This was an accident in a rental car but I have 1 mil in supplemental liability insurance (SLI).

    Workers compensation questions please help!

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 09:49 AM PST

    Hello r/Insurance!

First time poster here so I first want to thank anyone who takes time out of their day to respond to me.

I recently started operations as a demolition contractor in CA and will soon transition to asbestos removal too. Lately we have been exempt from WC because we dont have any workers, yet. I obviously need WC, in fact we cannot even apply for the asbestos removal license without showing proof of WC! I know it is a specialty trade so I will have to shop around to see who offers the best rates for such a young firm.

My questions are regarding the variables that determine how much one pays for WC. I have read that whether my future employees are full time or part time plays a role on how much one pays, also how much one's employees earn. Since the number contracts we are awarded determine these variables (whether they're part time, full time, salaries etc.) How would I go about passing this information to an insurance agent accurately?

In all honesty, it is undetermined and hard to foreshadow how successful one might be throughout 2020, but I rather be pessimistic since it will be our first year of operation and we lack the networks and resources to compete with bigger firms in CA.

    Thank you all yet again!

    Happy New Year (:

I’m afraid they’re going to total my car

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 11:55 AM PST

97 Honda Accord with only 76,000 miles and stereo system with Bluetooth :D my brother's girlfriend sold it to me for $1,400. It has made its was from New York to California and back a few times and was just in great condition.

Other driver was declared officially at fault. Cut me off to make a last minute left turn while I was crossing the intersection and I had the right of way since my light was green... but both of my airbags deployed and the impact from the passenger side airbag cracked my windshield on the passenger side.

I'm heartbroken and have been depressed since the accident. Posting here might kick me while I'm down but whatever. Hopefully someone has something positive to say or has had a similar situation where it ended in their favor as far as low repair costs or some thing.

Edited: I'm in California. Idk of that matters but just incase.

    Florida Glass Claims

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 07:09 PM PST

Note: I am new to reddit and on mobile so apologies for formatting.

I am a glass adjuster at x company and I am frustrated with certain glass shops in Florida. You might be thinking that glass claims are easy and stress free. However, I'm about to tell you why that isn't so. For some background info, under Florida law, a windshield repair or replacement must be covered with no deductible under comprehensive coverage. Which is a sweet deal.

However, there is a lot of AOB abuse going on in Florida. Certain glass shops will canvas neighborhoods and businesses and inform the insure they can get a free windshield under Florida state law while obtaining the insured's insurance information and having the insured sign a work order with a AOB in fine print stating the glass shop can obtain funds from the carrier, sue the carrier under the name the insureds name name if need be, and come after insured for any remaining balance that wasn't paid by the carrier.

After obtaining the signed work order/ AOB, the glass shop will either call the insurance customer service center or store agents to verify coverage instead of setting up a claim , or just use the insurance cards they insured provided. Then, they will replace the windshield (a lot of the time with OEM parts), even if the windshield only needs a repair, then state they replaced it "per the insureds request" when 9x out of 10 the glass shop informs the insured the vehicle needs a replacement. (Which I find annoying because it goes directly against the policy. We use after markets and there is a limit of liability)

After completing the replacement, the glass shop(s) will send an invoice for (on average) $3000. Then, tell insurance companies to pay the full amount or the glass shop will sue and charge attorney fees. (There are actually seminars conducted by attorneys to help glass shop sue insurance companies). Plus! Even if the glass shop and insurance company settle, the insured may still have to pay the remaining balance since they signed the work order with a AOB.

I am so tired of this is highly unethical practice. This is literally predatory and fraudulent and can severely impact people's lives. People have even stated that the process of the claim has affected their lives, mental health, marriages, and more. And it breaks my heart. I just don't understand how people can just take advantage people because of greed. And they don't play around when they said they will sue. Last year, within 5 months we had 40+ lawsuits from glass shops. I've heard of a lot carriers just pay the invoice which we did for awhile. However, This only cause the glass shops to send more invoice and charge higher amounts. After we started to dispute and deny these claims, there was was significant reduction in glass claims overall.

If you are an insured who lives in Florida, please go threw your insurance for you glass claims. DO NOT sign any documents from any glass company without speaking with your insurance company. They can recommend an ethical shop. However, it is still your choice but there is a chance that you claim will be prolonged due to inflated rates. DO NOT give permission to agents and customer service about your policy. Even if you have comprehensive coverage, please don't give a company unlimited access to your policy and policy information. Please be on the look at if your agent stated that you can only go to a certain shop. Agents are not suppose to refer insureds to shop (at least at my company). There are agents that will refer an insured to a particular glass shop in order to gain a referral fee. If this happened a inform the agent that you just are wanting to setup a claim and will look at all of your options. If there is push back, find the claims number online, file the claim, and inform your adjuster.

Please be careful out there in Floridians. This is not a headache you want. Geico and Allstate are both during glass shows due to these practices. Hopefully, a case law will establish some order.

TDLR: Certain Florida glass shops take advantage of people by tricking them to sign a AOB and charge insurance carriers for (on average) $3000.

Cash settlement under the table or settle with insurance

I just got into an accident and it is my fault; however, it is nothing more than a sideswipe that took off the paint of the other car. My car is perfectly fine expect for a little bump along the side of my car. My question is whether it would be better to pay for the other party's damages under the table or go through insurance. Thanks I'm advance

CA Registration set to be suspended tomorrow stating lack of insurance, even though it’s been verified previously.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 05:24 PM PST

I moved to California over two years ago. When I got here, I verified my insurance, and I have not made any significant policy changes. I also was involved in a fender bender where I had to submit my SR-1 with my insurance information attached.

Today, I recieved a letter dated over a month ago stating that if I did not verify my insurance by tomorrow, my registration would be suspended. I emailed a copy to the DMV, even though it said that wasn't an option because I received the letter. I attempted to enter in my insurance online, but it said could not be verified.

I have no choice but to drive tomorrow, and I cannot afford to taxi everywhere. What can I do? I have insurance. Hopefully, I don't get my license taken away.

[US-PA] [Auto] Same policy, two vehicles with different registered owners, living in one household but not married?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 04:45 PM PST

I'm looking to add my partner to my auto policy, but I am not on her registration. The only option I'm seeing on my insurance (national carrier) is to list myself as a registered owner and her as a second registered owner. Her registration is good for another 2 years, and the vehicle is financed, so I'm not sure I want to (or even can) go through the process of transferring the registration/title from her to both of us.

Is this possible, or does it fall under the "we will not register vehicles that aren't owned by you" rule?

Flood Insurance Question - Rising Ground Water

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 01:13 PM PST

Does Flood Insurance (the normal FEMA-type) cover rising groundwater?

My home is located on flat ground downstream of a dam on ground that used to be the floodplain of the Missouri River. Without a dam failure I would never actually get water on my lawn. When the dam has record releases the water table under my house rises as the soil is pretty sandy. The highest the water has ever gotten was four feet below the level of my lawn which would make it a few feet above the floor of my basement. I have never had water get in from underneath but others in the development have.

    FEMA defines flood as -

    a. Overflow of inland or tidal waters

    b. Unusual and rapid accumulation or runoff of surface waters from any source,

    c. Mudflow.

none of which describe my situation.

Does the overflow have to be locally at my parcel of land for the flood to exist? If the Feds declare my county as a disaster area due to flooding would I be covered by the insurance?

Adding my fiancé to my insurance without an insurance declaration?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 12:43 PM PST

To make an incredibly long story short, my fiancé's 2015 Ford Focus is under the name of her father AND herself. I called my insurance yesterday about putting her on my insurance policy and was told I need to exclude the father on my policy since the title is in both their names and send in a declaration page confirming that she's been insured. Seems to be all standard, however....

Turns out she's never been on her dads policy for the last 3 years. He insured the car under his name and refused to add her to the policy because "it was too much money". He doesn't even drive the car, only her. This seems like fraud because he's always told her to tell the other party in an accident that "I'm just driving my dads car".

I absolutely will not lie to my own insurance company. What are my options?
