Okay, just some wisdom from someone who has learned a lot of lessons recently!!!

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 11:46 AM PST

Starting your own business can be daunting. I've learned that the beginning and all the tasks and responsibilities and needs can become overwhelming. I've also watched others and myself walk away from something that could have become an amazing adventure due to a lot of complications.

Here is my advice: (for what it's worth)

Take each day one at a time. Set small goals and medium goals and large goals. Personally I set up a daily goal and weekly and monthly and annually. I break the larger goals down into smaller ones. I know this advice has been given a billion times, but here is something to think about.

Every day, every week, write in a journal. Write down the small victories. Set a regular date to review goals and reassess so you can make changes where necessary. If you find yourself not meeting every goal, that's okay. Take the small victories as a sign that you are progressing. Small victories add up to big success over time.

Don't give up on yourself. There are going to be obstacles in your way from time to time. This is your mountain and you can climb it.

Don't fall for the $0-$1M in a few months. Success, true and lasting success, takes hard work and dedication. Easy come, easy go. My dad always told me I would only truly appreciate the things I busted my butt to earn. He was right.

Last but not least, this quote is what drives me:

A DREAM written down with a date Becomes a GOAL A GOAL broken down into steps Becomes a PLAN A PLAN backed by ACTION Becomes REALITY

Dreams come true when we take action. Never let anyone make you stop dreaming!!! If you dream, dream BIG!!!!!!!

Favorite "Build Your Own Website" companies?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 08:51 AM PST

I've heard of sites like Wix, Squarespace, and GoDaddy, and I wonder if you have any good experiences or recommendations? We have a relatively young exterminator company that we want to create a website for.

    Edit:

Someone suggested instead of asking for a favorite, asking for pros and cons

Also, the website we want to make is VERY basic. The information doesn't really change, and my boss is older so he doesn't like anything "too complicated". The vision is a simple -these are the services we offer- with a Contact Us Now!

Update: THANK YOU ALL for the input and advice. Reading through everything now and making a list of do's and don't s. Really appreciate everything.

Thrift Shop or Second Hand Shop Owner Advice?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 10:24 PM PST

    Hello everyone!

I have always enjoyed working with people, and enjoyed my retail job (for the most part haha). I recently moved into an area where the nearest second hand shop is an hour away. I have always grown up going to them, and had the brilliant/ or stupid idea (I'm not sure which yet honestly) to possibly open my own. It's a fairly large town, so I believe it would do well.

I was wondering if I could possibly get any advice from those who had owned such a shop, or anyone in general please. I would very much like to hear any advice and wisdom you may be willing to pass on. Thank you for everything, and taking the time to read this is as well. :)

Business Insurance - Sending out entire lease for a quote

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 03:10 AM PST

    Hello,

I recently signed a lease contract for my store and was looking for business insurance. In order to receive a quote, I am getting requests to send over my entire lease agreement for review. Is there any risk in this? The lease contract doesn't have any specific clause about confidentiality but I was just wondering if there's any reason not to do this.

    Thank you.

Business Strategy Lessons from the Decade of Disruption 2010-2019

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 02:46 AM PST

This decade witnessed an unprecedented rise and fall of business empires. Sustainability slumped to 15 years from the previous 60 years and it became harder to foresee budding competitors. Let's begin with the positives.

And then there were the ones that did feel the heat and few that fell from their thrones:

    • Microsoft almost faltered to a steep decline after the swift innovation-shove by its competitor, iPhone. Satya Nadella's cloud computing was a lucky long shot that saved the sinking ship right on time.
    • IBM's edge in Enterprise IT and CISCO's crown jewel Networking Gear were beaten bad by Microsoft's, Amazon's and Google's Cloud Computing.

Should I elect my LLC to be taxed as an s-corp?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 09:36 PM PST

Hello! I am in the process of forming an LLC and I plan to reinvest the vast majority of the profits back into the company. I know I will be taxed of the money that I pay to myself but will the business itself be subject to any taxes?

How can I find someone who will develop a sales cycle process and hire salespeople for me?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 12:48 PM PST

With my first company I made over $2M in undergrad. Then I retired thinking it was a lot of money. Now I'm back, due to money problems. I have about 5 business plans/ideas worthy of implementing. I want to focus on where I am most efficient. Therefore I want to find someone who can handle the development of sales cycle and recruitment of salespeople (on commission at first, due to lack of funding). I want them to do this for the aforementioned businesses.

How can I find such a person? I need someone who will take ownership of his departments. Someone properly committed to taking more out of life, someone unreasonable and aggressive, also logical and not short-sighted when it comes to cooperation (a.k.a I'm looking for my copy, except he is efficient in sales). Usually best way to find such people through hobbies, friendship, etc. But I don't have time for that at the moment.

    Signage on awning?

I am thinking about renting a retail space that has an awning over the entrance. It currently has the old business's sticker sign stuck to the face of the awning. Does anyone know the best way to make this awning display my business's name and the approximate cost I can expect?

    Phone growing pains

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 04:43 PM PST

Hello! When I started my business last year, my aim was to do it as cost effectively as possible. I decided to use an app based solution my business phone number. I used OpenPhone and I am very happy with them. But as I have grown a lot faster than I expected, I needed to hire a full time administrator. Right now, I use a live answering service for most inquiries coming to my main number. Originally I turned it on at night only but now I pretty much leave it forwarded 24/7. They will send me a text message and I respond to the client via my cell number. Once my administrator starts, I would like her to answer and eventually handle these calls.

This is where my problem is. I have asked support at OpenPhone if there is any hardware I could get that would be supported, so that I can use my number in a more traditional sense. They currently don't support that but said they have just unveiled a web app. I'm trying the beta version. I don't want her to have to wear a headset all day though.

I am trying to find some type of hardware that would work in conjunction with the web based phone app, or even the regular OpenPhone iOS app running off an iPad.

Would any generic VoIP phone work? Or do they only work with specific providers?

My other idea was to get an old school land line and forward my OpenPhone number to it. I'm curious how that would work if I had more than one caller at a time though.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Looking to open a brick-and-mortar art gallery/event/workshop space in Chicago. How hard is it to get a small business loan?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 12:55 PM PST

    Hello everyone,

First time here. Me and my wife are looking to open a space here in Chicago (Pilsen) and we were thinking of getting loans. I did some googling, but it gave me more questions than answers...

Is it a fairly easy process getting a business loan without having an established business beforehand? We are only looking to get about $10k for a couple months of rent and renovations...

Also, if any of you got tips or anything for Chicago, I'd love to hear em.

Exploring buying a local hobby business- no idea where to start.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 09:13 PM PST

So, I have a full time job and my husband is about to graduate in May with an engineering degree- undergrad. At the moment he hasn't landed a job/internship, I'm going to say it's because he's been keeping his grades up to keep funding etc. He has a hobby that he buys supplies from a local shop in his spare time and is friends with the owner. The owner is closing/looking to sell for personal reasons and we're both interested in possibly purchasing the business but have no idea where to start.

We don't have much capital at the moment, so we would probably be looking at a loan or some other arrangement. The stats we know so far- the business brings in $75k annual gross. The owner is the only employee. The rent in the space is $1500 a month- high but it's a very high traffic location, he's currently paying month to month. He has about 2500 regular customers for this hobby store. We see a major opportunity for growth by incorporating online sales, but as of now it's just brick and mortar. He is asking $12k for all existing inventory and "the business."

Forgive the ignorance, but I don't even know where to begin and was hoping for direction. I'm not opposed to taking out a loan to pursue the venture and we both have good credit, but im curious about other arrangements people set up. I am hoping there might be some sort of alternative we could work out that would let my husband put in some sweat equity as the main reason the owner is selling is he wants to be at home more with his grandkids. Any suggestions?

We're just talking at this point but he seems open to counter offers and proposals. This hobby has a good local community and it's one of the only supply stores in the state currently. Sorry I'm not going into more detail on the type of business. We really don't want to see the place close, and also I think my husband would thrive as a business owner and this could be a great experience for him. Any advice appreciated! I'll respond in the morning if anyone answers.

TL DR: affordable local hobby business for sale, but we still don't have capital on hand. Any alternative acquisition deals we can pitch to the owner?

Best Way to Start a Small Business From Home

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 02:13 PM PST

I'm looking to start my own small Computer Repair business from home (with very little money). What are some of the best ways to get my name out there without spending much? Are there any free and reliable ways to advertise and possibly build a website? I'm in California, so I'm also wondering if there is anything I have to do to make it an official thing, or can I just start doing something like that on my own?

What does a person do when they’re ready to sell their small biz?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 07:42 PM PST

Family friend has run a business (signs) for entire life. About 12 employees, equipment, space, etc. Meaningfully profitable with long list of earned customers from 30 years of doing business.

He's ready to retire but wants to either 1) sell it for a lump sum upfront 2) enter an arrangement where he gets some number each year either based on sales or just flat.

I'm sure this is possible but not sure where one goes to...find the buyer? Do people hire a specialized consultant in a situation like this? Is there some sort of matchmaking forum out there that can connect retiring boomers with profitable businesses to people who want to take over and grow it? Do you just go to competitors with a pitch deck of sorts and propose an acquisition? This is kinda an old school, basically all offline business in a mid sized suburb.

I'd like to provide some guidance but no idea.

Am I legal yet? VA Shopify ^_^

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 07:59 AM PST

    Hi all,

My name is Claire, and I'm starting my first Shopify store (and first small business). It's a bit overwhelming, and I'm trying to avoid spending money on a lawyer at this stage. I've done a LOT of reading and research over the past few months, and almost feel confident enough to dive in.

Anyone willing to do a quick check on my process and point out anything I might be missing? Not looking to be spoon-fed, but if anyone notices any glaring omissions or could do a quick blindspot check, that would be very comforting.

I'm selling computer accessories, so no weird permits. No alcohol, no firearms, no geese. I'm located in Virginia, and shipping entirely from Virginia.

    1) Form LLC (using service, if I want my hand held, or on my own)

    2) Get EIN

    3) Get Sales Tax Permit (seems like this is automatic / included with registering my business on the virginia.gov site- which I can do as soon as I have my FEIN)

    (4. Open Shopify, Sell product)

(Optional: Apply to USPTO to protect brand name, if desired.)

From a legal / gov perspective, am I missing anything?

That's the most important part, follow-up question at bottom IF you are feeling super generous! Thank you so much for your time; will do my best to pay it forward.

    Love and appreciation <3,

    Claire

    (Follow-up)

I also see this page for registering a business in VA:

    https://www.tax.virginia.gov/register-business-virginia

First, is this likely redundant if I use a service to form an LLC? (I'll check with the service, as well.)

Second, do I have to put my home address for the business address, even if I'm selling entirely online, and is this information available to the public? Or can I put my registered agent here? Same exact question for "Responsible party's information."

    Dispute over back pay

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 06:56 PM PST

A number of years ago a friend and I started a business together. It was my first business. He's been an entrepreneur his whole life. It is an LLC and we each owned half the business. I brought money; he bought experience. Best I can remember, my wage was never determined. My wife was the breadwinner and we could live without a second income. He was the breadwinner of his family, and took income. After 18 months, I decided the work wasn't for me, and moved on to other things, but kept my 50% ownership. During those 18 months I was paid maybe $2k. However, several members of my family had loaned money to the company, and when I left, my business partner and I decided I was owed $20k in back pay.

Fast forward about 8 years. I have left the running of the business to my partner. It has struggled, but stayed afloat. The loans to my family and my back pay have not been paid off. I haven't been pushy about it, because I know it's been rough. He doesn't bring the loans up unless I do, and then he says "can't repay them now."

I decided it's been long enough and told my partner that it's time to start paying back what is owed, and that I'd give him my ownership share when he agrees to do so. He said he would repay the loans over time, but not my back pay. His argument is that when I left, I put the debt burden exclusively on him, and that my leaving forced him to use a much more expensive model of hiring labor. The fact that he has only gotten about 80% of wage that we decided on for him, he says, is another reason that I should not get my back pay. He feels that I abandoned my investment and wages when I stopped working, but out of "good will" he will repay the loans. This "abandonment" of investment and wages was never discussed at the time, and nothing in the company operating agreement supports this claim.

I think that my family and I have been generous and patient, that his arguments are bunk, and that he should repay in full, but would like to hear from unbiased people with more business experience.

TLDR: I own 50% of a business I stopped working at a while ago and my business partner now says he won't give me back pay because my leaving made running the business more expensive.

How to dealt with the homeless lady?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 12:49 PM PST

I had a cabinet store and I let a homeless lady use the bathroom once and she keep coming back to use it cuz she is only one block away. Today, she didn't ask me and went straight to the bathroom. There is a sign on bathroom door says the toilet is not working, but she still use it and the water is all over the place now. How can I stop her to come back to use the bathroom?

BTW, there is a gas station very closed to me, has bathroom that she can use.
