    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Technicals Tuesday - Jan 07, 2020

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:07 AM PST

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on technical analysis (TA), but if TA is not your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against TA here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Technical analysis (TA) uses historical price movements, real time data, indicators based on math and/or statistics, and charts; all of which help measure the trajectory of a security. TA can also be used to interpret the actions of other market participants and predict their actions.

The main benefit to TA is that everything shows up in the price (commonly known as "priced in"): All news, investor sentiment, and changes to fundamentals are reflected in a security's price.

TA can be useful on any timeframe, both short and long term.

    https://www.cnbc.com/2020/01/07/streaming-wars-set-up-fight-between-subscriptions-and-ad-based-models.html

According to a survey, 59% of Americans aren't willing to pay more than $20 a month for streaming services, while 75% say they won't pay more than $30.

With Netflix charging $13 a month and leading the market with over 60 million U.S. subscribers, more services are turning to advertisements for revenue.

    TESLA, why so overvalued?!

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:33 PM PST

Can anyone explain why tesla is worth so much right now? Is it just irrational exuberance?

Any stocks you are thinking of getting today/this week?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 08:08 AM PST

It looks like the market is dipping a bit. Are you getting any stocks now? If so, do you have any reccomendations of what to get or what to look out for? Or do you think the dip will go even further and you're just waiting?

Any hidden fees with Charles Schwab

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 08:03 AM PST

After reviewing their website disclosures, it seems Schwab is the best way to start investing/trading for a rookie. They don't seem to charge any account minimum fees or online trading fees. Just wondering if anybody has experience with how accurate this is. As a college student just starting to invest, I don't want to spend what little capital I have on hidden or trading fees.

    Thank you

Why is Uber and Lyft share prices lower now than it was before?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 01:13 PM PST

Did something influence the share prices of these companies to decrease? These two companies pretty much dominate public transportation. Is there another competitor?

    Stock Finders

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:31 PM PST

So, I know I am probably investing optimally, but so far my in my investment time I've been doing swing trading with companies I know. I have about 15 or so stocks that I've been following for a while, and do swing trading with them. These are all well known companies. The general idea I've had is even if I misread a swing I can hold for a while and they always bounce back. Sometimes I get it right and hold for two days other times two months.

Anyway, all of the stocks I've been following are in a long upward trend. (which I've never seen before) so I was hoping to add some new stocks into my watch list. Where do you guys go to find stocks?

Is it possible to buy puts on Degiro? (Specifically for Tesla). Or how can I do it from EU?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 08:17 AM PST

I am from Central Europe and I use Degiro. I've never bought options in my life, but the thing happening with Tesla is a little ridiculous in my opinion. I want to put some of my gains I made last year into buying puts for Tesla (basically I want to gamble a little, lol, and as a slight defense in case of market correction happening this year). How can I do it with being a resident of Europe? Thanks a lot!

Question about withholding tax on American dividends as a Canadain trader

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 01:25 PM PST

I am a Canadain trader using a TFSA to create a passive income fund. I know that the US gov doesn't recognize it as a retirement fund and charges the 15% tax on dividends.

My question is: If I buy an American stock/security that is listed on the TSX am I still subject to the 15% tax?

Someone tell me not to buy into Stockyards Bankcorp.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:07 PM PST

Stockyard Bank Corp is a regional bank operating 28 branches in Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Louisville with a 920 million dollar market cap. The bank has 8.53% deposit market share for their area with deposit growth of 2% from June to September of this year.

Stockyard's fundamentals look strong and seem to outperform industry averages. They sport an operating margin of 38% compared to industry average 25% and a profit margin of 31% in comparison to industry average of 19%. Their debt to assets are low despite recently acquiring King Bank Corp and they've raised their dividend the last three years.

The bank's P/E is 13.1 but it's been growing at a steady rate. Net income for the first 9 months of '19 grew by 21% and management forecasts that continued growth will come from market share gains related to their core loan pipeline and deposit base.

One thing that gives me pause is that management seems to be selling shares of the company on regular intervals however the Board of Directors has moved in the other direction and unwaveringly purchased shares. I don't know what could explain this pattern of insider transactions.

Still, the bank's beat earning expectations the last three quarters and I'm going to take a small position. I'm linking the Q3 numbers and the finviz profile showing the insider patterns. If you're taking your own look and see something I missed let me know.

    Choose 1 to sell

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 07:59 AM PST

I need cash right now and my only option is to sell one of this 3 stocks. Right now I am getting the same gain from the 3 stocks (30%) and I have the same amount (there is no "medium" solution, just sell 1 of 3).

The stocks are Tesla, Apple and Alibaba (BABA). The 2 stocks that I want to keep are going to stay in my portfolio for at least 2-3 years.

    Wich One Will you sell?

    Thnx! 😗😗😗

Craft Brew Alliance (BREW) merger question

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 11:13 AM PST

With the upcoming merger, is there any reason to hold the stock rather than sell it at $16.50 (the merger price)? How could it / why would it ever rise above this price? What happens if I do not sell it and the merger goes through?

Thanks! Having trouble finding clears answers to these questions.

A reorganization fee for a reverse stock split?????

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 08:46 AM PST

Has anyone ever heard of being charged a fee because a company has a reverse stock split?? got this message from Ameritrade today regarding my inquiry about an account I haven't used in a few years with a negative balance..... didn't even think I owned this stock anymore:

"Back on 07/23/2018, you were charged a $38 reorganization fee from Ascent Solar Technologies. This company went through a 1 x 1000 reverse split, and that fee has been passed on by the company."

I've never been charged a fee for a reverse split (I think I've only been through 1)....is this normal? The company charging the stockholders a fee?
