    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Fundamentals Friday Jan 24, 2020

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 12:07 AM PST

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on fundamentals, but if fundamentals aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against fundamentals here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Most fundamentals are updated every 3 months due to the fact that corporations release earnings reports every quarter, so traders are always speculating at what those earnings will say, and investors may change the size of their holdings based on those reports. Expect a lot of volatility around earnings, but it usually doesn't matter if you're holding long term, but keep in mind the importance of earnings reports because a trend of declining earnings or a decline in some other fundamental will drive the stock down over the long term as well.

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

    Market Cap - Shares Outstanding - Volume - Dividend - EPS - P/E Ratio - EPS Q/Q - PEG - Sales Q/Q - Return on Assets (ROA) - Return on Equity (ROE) - BETA - SMA - quarterly earnings

If you have a basic question, for example "what is EBITDA," then google "investopedia EBITDA" and click the Investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

Tesla could eventually reach a trillion-dollar valuation, think tank says

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 05:10 AM PST

    https://www.cnbc.com/2020/01/24/tesla-to-1-trillion-think-tank-says-its-in-the-cards.html

"One of the things that I see is, in the U.S., if you own a Toyota, you are three times more likely to want a Tesla," Yoon said, citing his firm's research. "So, I think that's actually very bad news for Toyota in the near term and in the long run. And you can see that kind of bearing out in their sales."

Moreover, roughly 9% of U.S. households — about 10 million, by Yoon's calculation — are very likely or extremely likely to purchase a Tesla as their next car, adding another leg to his bull case.

    Thanks for the gold award!!

Not just for the money: What stocks do you buy out of sheer interest in what a company does?

Does anyone have stock in companies, not necessarily because it's big on returns for you, but because you're interested in what the company does and what it's future might be? If so what are they?

    This market is insane

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 02:00 PM PST

I understand that we are in a Bull Market, but the growth rates I've been seeing for the past 3 months are absurd. I'm mainly in index funds and I'm 23% in the last 10 months, 17 that 23 % is in the last 3 months. This after nearly a decade of Bull conditions. This is way beyond sustainable. Don't get me started with TSLA.

I usually buy with dollar cost averaging, but I've slowed way down in the last month. I even sold everything I had right before new years and then re-purchased (with some re-balancing) the next day. I'm debating something like the dollar cost averaging for selling in the near future.

This is far beyond the 'irrational exuberance' of the late 90s. Why isn't the market correcting? I understand that the FED doesn't really care about the stock market, but unemployment and inflation are reasonably low. Why isn't the FED raising interest rates so we actually have some monetary levers when the economy slows?

I'm not seeking investment advice here, but I'd also be curious to hear what some people are doing in these ongoing ever increasing market highs.

    Need tips about Plug Power

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 10:52 AM PST

I was hedging on "future" stocks and I bought a lot of Plug stocks at 3.52, then it went down to 2.90 and I bought some more. After the report at the end of 2019, about a new project it went to 4.20-ish. I am not sure about the direction it is taking, and want to be sure it will be a good buy in future. Anyone have thoughts about this?

I panic sold my big Chinese stock holdings – BABA and BADU because of my fear for the worst. Did I do the right thing?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 08:52 AM PST

It seems like this coronavirus is no joke and has had a terrible impact on Chinese stocks, even on two stocks which I thought were great. I have a feeling it's going to keep falling and falling as this virus gets more widespread and worse so I decided to just panic sell out of fear and wait until prices fall more so I can re-enter. Did I do the right thing?

TWTR High Risk, Long Term as US election season approaches

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 10:21 AM PST

In the coming months we're going to see an election with more emphasis than ever on social media. Candidates are going to up their game across all social media networks but with the rise of Mango, there is going to be a particular focus on Twitter - hell, even maybe some Twitter wars between candidates. Unlike last US election, Twitter is now as understandable as Facebook, even to boomers (OK). As all the proverbial crap flies, and with Trump running for re-election there most undoubtedly will be, the world is going to download and tune in. Grab your calls expiring post-election/early 2021.

    Thoughts on Aphria

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 08:25 AM PST

Hey guys just curious why nobody is talking about Aphria. At about $7 a share it doesn't seem like a bad idea. They seem to be getting involved in Europe and signing some deals from quick Google search. What am I missing? Do you guys think it cant go up from $7? A 2k investment doesn't seem like a terrible idea. Obviously risky but even if it goes up to $9. That would be a nice little profit. As you can tell by now I'm pretty new to the game, any feedback, comments, thoughts and suggestions are cool to read.

Question on eToro Copy Trading Platform

I am looking to start and invest EUR 2000 either follow a trader or on an easy to use fund investment app, looking at 10%-15% p.a. What platform would you suggest and is eToro worth investing in?

(CNBC)

    • The World Economic Forum is wrapping up today in Davos, Switzerland. A Hong Kong property developer said the U.S. chose the wrong decade to start a trade conflict with China. "They should have picked the war 10 years ago," said David Chiu, chairman of Far East Consortium International. (CNBC)
