    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Options Trading Thursday - Jan 09, 2020

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 12:06 AM PST

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on stock options, but if options aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against options here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Required info to start understanding options:

    • Call option Investopedia video basically a call option allows you to buy 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to buy
    • Put option Investopedia video a put option allows you to sell 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to sell

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

Call option - Put option - Exercising an option - Strike price - ITM - OTM - ATM - Long options - Short options - Combo - Debit - Credit or Premium - Covered call - Naked - Debit call spread - Credit call spread - Strangle - Iron condor - Vertical debit spreads - Iron Fly

If you have a basic question, for example "what is delta," then google "investopedia delta" and click the investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

Google is getting close to breaking Amazon record as fastest to $1 trillion in market cap

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 05:53 AM PST

Google is currently at $962B and up in pre market and with a $974B market cap as I type this.

Amazon is four years older than Google and therefore Google should get to $1 trillion ultimately faster than Amazon.

Amazon passed $1 trillion on Sept 4, 2018 or after 8,827 days since being founded. Google today is 7,797 days old. So they have to pass in the next 1,030 days.

The Nasdaq also closed at a new high, and indications this morning point to the Dow joining the record run on an easing of fears about a possible escalation of U.S.-Iran hostilities. (Reuters)
    • The House will vote today on a resolution to curb President Donald Trump's power to take military action against Iran. Nancy Pelosi said some members of Congress have "serious, urgent concerns" about Trump's strategy, which the administration did not assuage with a briefing or its "insufficient" notification of the strike to Congress under the War Powers Act. (CNBC)

    • A Ukrainian International Airlines plane that crashed shortly after leaving Tehran on Wednesday, killing all 176 people on board, was reportedly on fire before impact, according to Iran's civil aviation authority. • China's Vice Premier Liu He, head of the country's negotiation team in China-U.S. trade talks, will sign a "Phase One" deal in Washington next week. • Lebanese investigators finish questioning Ghosn, file referred to prosecutor: judicial source (Reuters)
    • Ghosn regrets not accepting US offer to lead GM for double his salary (CNBC)
    • Fugitive former Nissan exec feared he would 'die in Japan' if he didn't escape (CNBC)

Assuming you bough SPY @ max in 2007 (156.4800), when you account for dividends/diustributions, how long did it take to recover?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 10:05 AM PST

    Hi Guys,

So the peak of SPY was 156.48 in 2007, and the stock didnt recover until 2013. However, I suspect that there were some dividends or distributions during that 6 year period. How long did it actually take for the VALUE of your investment assuming you reinvested dividends, to be equal to the 156.48 at the time of buying?

    Thanks!

Earnings Season Begins! Here are the Most Anticipated Earnings Releases for the week beginning January 13th, 2020

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 08:19 AM PST

    IMPORTANT NOTICE!

Hi r/stocks! I am just putting out next week's most anticipated earnings calendar a day earlier than usual due to not being able to get around to do this tomorrow or this weekend. I really don't like to post these up any earlier than Friday's because sometimes the calendars can look a bit wonky where you might see some companies on the calendar that are actually not scheduled to report, or are reporting on another day, etc etc. but unfortunately I don't really have much of an option here...it's either putting this up now or no earnings thread at all for next week. Anyway, please do me this favor everyone and review carefully the companies that are scheduled to report on their respective days for next week. Admittedly, I did not get a chance to confirm all the companies that are on this week's calendar are actually reporting, but if you see something that doesn't look right, as far as a company that is listed up on this calendar on a particular day that isn't expected to report, please just post a little notice in this thread so that everyone is made aware of it! I'd greatly appreciate that. It's very possible that there are some company logos on this calendar that are misplaced here. FWIW, I do not create these calendars. These are coming straight from EW (Earnings Whispers). Thank you!

Here are the most notable earnings releases for the trading week beginning January 13th, 2020.

Which stocks are worth buying short term/ long term?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 11:48 AM PST

I've been keeping an eye on the sub for a while, looking for investment options in 2020. I've noticed AAPL, MSFT, AMZN and TSLA have been mentioned quite a lot as great investment opportunities. However, these are all rather expensive and seem to be considered great options for long term investments. BUT I would also like to start investing a bit more short term, which these stocks aren't optimal for IMO.

This brings me to 2 questions.

    1. What stocks do you consider to be great for long term investments?
    2. What stocks/ markets are better for short term?

I'm trying to build a portfolio consisting of a larger investment in safe stocks (I know that you can't consider any stock safe, but you get what I mean) and also smaller investments to expand my experience with short term trading.

At What point do you cave and just sell a stock that tumbled?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 08:26 AM PST

Last year i started to play around with some stocks and made some dumb mistakes and have learned a lot since doing so. These 3 stocks took a huge tumble on me, however, thankfully its not a huge loss at the moment. Overall one is down $350, and the other two around $150 in losses. The $350 stock took a nasty slide and i am just unsure if it will ever recover.

At what point do you decide to just cave and get some money back or is it better to just ride it out at this point and just see what happens? I do not need the money but i just wanted to move whatever i can get to other stocks instead.

    Thanks

Why you should invest young when your broke?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 01:07 PM PST

Started investing at 19 about a year and half ago from all the money I had saved up from high school. 8,000 portfolio invested nearly 2/3 of it prior to lost. Lost nearly 2000 after getting cocky with penny stocks and the Chinese hype bought high sold low. Year half later not significant but I'm up 700 after deploying rest of the 8,000 left and sticking to my strategy and not making emotion plays. The point of this post is start young when your broke. (Clarify was able to invest due to scholarships and family financial support. If you don't have this luxury you should be saving up not investing. If I could go back I you should always have a cushion based off your current living cost and how long it will take to find a stable income to support your cost.) Learn the mistakes now instead of when you actually have a lot of capital to lose. Do your research and prepare but don't over prepare. Once you actually make your first trade you honestly don't know you will react. I think the most important thing is learning your emotions how you react to massive losses, stocks skyrocket, missed opportunities, diversification, and etc. Also Simulation trading means nothing when actually trading. Just wanted make quick post seen sub grow so much in year and a half. I was personally a lurker for 6 months before actually making a trade. If any questions feel free to ask and do not use stock twits that is cancer when starting off everyone is either a super bear or super bull.

A stock which people might be avoiding now.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 08:07 AM PST

The market is growing. With new year, many companies set new records of 52 week. Everyone knows about TSLA, APPL. They are going crazy high and most of the people are desiring to buy them now and there is nothing wrong in that. I am in the same boat. But, I feel like there is one stock which people might be avoiding now, that is BA. BA 52 week high is $446. Current price today is $332. Eventually, BA will fix their all issues and mess and will go back to $446. I think now is the time to buy BA. Please let me know if I am wrong. Also, what are everyone's opinions?

Also, apologize for my English. English is not my first language.

    Biotech genomics ETFs

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 10:08 AM PST

    Hello,

I am a health tech writer doing some research for a story on biotech ETFs that invest heavily or preferentially in genomics and genetics stocks. I´m interested to hear if anyone wants to share their insights and experiences investing in such funds. The benefits are more or less obvious (high potential, rapid growth of the industry), but how to they compare to the risks? Are there any considerable risks when investing in genomics ETFs such as ARKG and GNOM? What are some things to watch out for when considering putting your money in such funds? What level of risk appetite do they require? And what does active management of genomics ETFs really mean?

Also, if you want to list your top 3 or top 5 genomics ETFs, it would be fantastic. Or answer any relevant question I forgot to ask... :)

    Thanks so much!
