Posted: 07 Jan 2020 05:06 AM PST Welcome to this week's Operational Roundtable Thread. Ask about anything related to legal, accounting, project management, or how to get started. Don't be shy. The purpose of this is to learn and share ideas and methodologies with one another. Any question is a good question! If you are answering questions, remember to be kind and supportive. Many are just starting out and have no idea what they are doing. That's okay! We all knew nothing before we knew something. You can also find more support using instant chat on the /r/startups discord. [link] [comments] |
Independent Contractor vs. Employee at a Startup Posted: 07 Jan 2020 05:47 PM PST Hopefully this is the right place to ask this question, but I'm looking at taking a job with a startup company, and I have two offers on the table. One is to accept employment with no benefits and one week PTO at 40k annually, or 45k as an independent contractor. Are these options fairly equal, and what are the major points I need to look out for and watch my back over? I'm spending the night doing my research online, but don't have anyone I can talk this through with. Any help is greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Want to survey startups/small businesses. What's the best approach ? Posted: 07 Jan 2020 11:08 AM PST I want to gather some data about some software used by other small businesses/startups to validate some hypothesis of mine. Unfortunately, I personally do not know many such startups. What is the best way to approach this ? Cold emailing by looking at Angelist ? How can I convince them to reply since my potential startup is still in the ideation stage. [link] [comments] |
Seeking Advice: Starting a Corporation Posted: 07 Jan 2020 06:58 PM PST Hi All, I'm currently bootstrapping a company and will be launching as a Benefits Corporation. I need to formally file my Corporation with the state and want to keep my costs down. What are your thoughts on the online services that file your corporation for $100? There are a number of online providers that offer to file you corporation for you. Are they safe and legitimate? I prefer not to drop thousands on a lawyer if it isn't needed, but if these sites are bogus I don't want to go down the wrong path. I appreciate any advice. [link] [comments] |
What skills are most desirable in the startup industry? Posted: 07 Jan 2020 08:46 PM PST College student exploring the startup industry here. What sort of skills are highly desirable at the moment? Or in the foreseeable future? Alternatively, what sort of jobs are common with startups? Still very much learning the space, any sort of help or direction would be really appreciated! How To Stop Being a Perfectionist? Posted: 08 Jan 2020 02:12 AM PST I can't seem to stop! I want everything to be perfect. The website, documents, marketing, every last detail. I know that I just need to push forward, advance, scale and outsource. But I can't stop wanting everything to be perfect, which is really slowing me down and probably causing more harm than good. How do I stop being a perfectionist? [link] [comments] |
Hiring a company or hiring people? Posted: 07 Jan 2020 05:00 PM PST I'm looking into creating an app for a business idea that I have. The business is centered around the app (I don't want to give anything away currently). I've talked to a company that specializes in app creation and have seen their work. They estimate the cost of the app to be anywhere from 50k-80k. My question is this: would it be better to hire this company who has a proven track record, or would it be better to hire two or three developers? Any insight is appreciated. Respectfully, Manureprenuer [link] [comments] |
Which idea should I go forward with? Posted: 07 Jan 2020 10:44 AM PST Hey, I have the opportunity to "invest" 10000 dollars in one of these ideas I have but I struggle to make up my mind, that's why I would love to hear your thoughts on the ideas. Idea 1: I own great domain names in my country that would translate to this in English "compareElectricCars.com and rentElectriccar.com" My plan is to build compare sites for the electric car market in my country and then contact resellers that would pay money to be visible on the site/sites. Idea 2: I own a great .com domain for the "posture" market. My plan is to make my own back posture products and sell them worldwide. I have found high quality manufactures for this. The problem is that I don't know really how to validate which idea I should "test". Please share your thoughts on this. [link] [comments] |
Starting development on app but identical product released recently Posted: 07 Jan 2020 07:54 PM PST I am starting development on an idea for an app that I've had for a while and a few months ago someone released a web version of the app that I want to build. The app in question has near identical features to that which I would want to build and their future features and goals are also very similar. There is no novel engineering or anything so its a matter of implementation and branding. There's no way for me to know if that app has gotten much traction yet but I believe I can build out an iOS version in a couple months. I am in the process of starting development and have a better name and domain and will release to iOS first. I don't want to run into any legal issues and would also like any suggestions on dealing with competition and how to move forward. Let me know what thoughts you have. Thank you! Edit: There is a crowdsourcing / social component that both apps depend on. I need to build a large user base to make my product stickier. [link] [comments] |
Whom should I approach (I have idea and MVP) Posted: 07 Jan 2020 04:37 PM PST Hi guys, I know nowadays with an idea it is not enough. It is about action. I am wondering based on your experience what should be the next steps if I have an idea and a concept (MVP) that works from a technology perspective? I do know, with technology now everyone can create a product but the biggest challenge is when you have to find your niche or customers... Perhaps if there is no market I should create one? Similar to Elon Mask what he did with electric cars. Nevertheless, should I approach accelerators/investors in the UK (based on my location) since funds would a good boost to launch service/product further? What are you experience on this? Making time for life in the beginning Posted: 07 Jan 2020 01:06 PM PST I am close to launching my SaaS startup (not my first), and because of the nature of it (B2B high uptime needed) I need to make sure I can always respond to incidents if they happen. Where I am conflicted is that I have only really one hobby that I love, that's boating and being on the water. It's kind of hard to go out on the boat with a laptop and still have fun and water ski/tube ect. I'm wondering how others in similar positions have handled this? I normally would say to ignore the hobby (boating) but it's the one thing that keeps me saine and gives me enjoyment outside tech/business. As well as I bought a brand new boat last year so would be sad to pay for it all and put it up for a few years and a major waste of money. I can't sell it either because loan is underwater by a long shot as is typical with boat loans in the first 5 years [link] [comments] |
Thoughts on the term "Unfair Advantage" Posted: 07 Jan 2020 01:05 PM PST I work at a startup, and we're working on a pitch deck for investors. One of the people in our team wants to use the term "Unfair Advantage" when comparing us to the competition. My first gut reaction was that using the term unfair had a negative connotation. What're your thoughts on this? I feel like this is a shitty term for ego-maniacs. This is the defintion of unfair.. not based on or behaving according to the principles of equality and justice. "at times like these the legal system appears inhumane and unfair" unkind, inconsiderate, or unreasonable. "you're unfair to criticize like that when she's never done you any harm" not following the rules of a game or sport. [link] [comments] |
What is the best way to populate an online store with product listings (including barcodes)? Posted: 07 Jan 2020 03:42 AM PST I am looking to sell movies, books, games, and music. I don't have any stock yet, but want to ensure that I have the items listed as part of my store catalogue / database. What is the best way to populate an online store with product listings (including barcodes and images)? Is there a database out there which I can import, or will I need to add the products manually over time? [link] [comments] |
Can you compete with big companies? Posted: 07 Jan 2020 04:52 AM PST What is the value in spending time/money/energy on a project/idea than can probably be copied by big players? Unless it can be patented, or unless it's too hard to copy, is it worth it? (To give you a bit more context, the big "players" I'm talking about here would be supermarkets) Cheers [link] [comments] |
How do you approach starting a two-sized marketplace startup? Posted: 07 Jan 2020 06:46 AM PST In our case, we are trying to build two types of users - 1) career-focused individuals and 2) employers. We want to change the way individuals are evaluated from value derived from past experiences (eg. resumes), to value based on demonstrating career progression and learning (points). Today we have 0 of each type of users, what approaches would you recommend as good steps to get started? [link] [comments] |
