Any advice for a first time start-up?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 06:17 PM PST

I am around 2 or 3 weeks from launching my first proper business, I'm just waiting for the government offices to reopen to fill out the paper work.

I'm going to be selling fresh, local and homemade dog food to customers in my city. All meals are cooked and prepared in portion sized packed specific to each dog. We will take into account their health issues, allergies, preferences, size etc and deliver the slow cooked food the same day. I'm gonna deliver from 6pm-10pm during the weekday because my city is still small so all traffic dies after 6pm.

Anybody got any useful advice? All advice is good advice in my eyes.

How can I turn business around for my Startup?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 05:36 PM PST

    Hi Folks, and i'll summarise;

16 months ago I received £10K in investment from a micro VC to get hardware built x 20, and this accompanied the online backend and we had a near complete product. I managed to secure 3 Events where I provided our solution for free in return for testimonial and to build our credibility. Fast forward to late 2019 and we've (small freelance team) gone on to secure 3 paid Events, using a repeat of current inventory. As any startup may experience - we had technical problems on 2 of those gigs and i'm to refund them 50%. The last 6 months has been bootstrapping; £0 on PR, £0 on marketing, £0 on more inventory, £0 on any Sales expertise - however I had managed to put some personal money in to company product development to 'fix' the technical issues and am always trying to improve SEO and constantly send 'cold emails'.

Research shows we have a product that is needed in the industry - we've innovated where others haven't, and truly have the potential to disrupt if we can snowball our way to more and more Events. My initial current investor is now requiring his money back (if possible) and a loan of £5K he made is also needing a date set when it can be paid. I've had a 9-5 job all this time, and I will NOT give up; i've lived and breathed the company since it's initial inception many years ago however i'm finding it incredibly difficult to maintain the willpower to continue and it's ever so hard with zero cash. I've tried reaching out to Angels and i've a great pitch deck complete - perhaps an Equity crowdfunding campaign could help. What else can I do?! Are there companies (i live in a major city) that intervene at this stage and offer guidance and advice. I've been told by many that we have a very interesting and innovative product which has so much potential.

    Thanks for reading.

Have an app idea, but how do I know it won’t get copied by a bigger player?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 04:05 PM PST

I have an idea for a short video app, but I'm wondering what kind of patent protections bytedance's 'Tiktok' has, or facebooks 'Lasso'. I don't want to put my time and energy into it if it cannot in someway be protected. I know there are some app design patents I could look into, or patent the software itself (but that wouldn't help much). What's preventing Facebook from making an exact copy of TIKTOK? And if I make a short video app, what will prevent Facebook from making an exact copy of my idea? Why doesn't Facebook just make a Snapchat clone as well?

Help in organization and focus for all my startup duties.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 11:33 AM PST

Our fintech platform just landed $3.4mm in seed money. I am a VP among the CEO, CTO, and one other VP. Coming from a science and legal background, I have minimal management experience, mostly dealing with the immediate needs and focus in front of me. I'm now in a role where I must work with 7 other people to be self-starting in areas in which I am not familiar, all while managing company expectations and growth. This is all very new to me, as I've not been involved in corporate governance and corporate life for over a decade.

Question: What tools are available to better understand the management role in front of me?

Question(s) about VC funding needs and requirements

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 08:26 PM PST

Greetings guys, long story short I've finally publicly announced my app today that I've been working on for the better part of 2019. It's now available on iOS and Google Play.

I've got almost 100 users so far, which is small but I'm proud of it. I designed and funded the entirety of the app, and plan to do so with advertising costs.

I would prefer to spend outside money on advertising costs in an attempt to be able to reach more of an audience, on a larger scale but don't have the type of capital for that.

Obviously I'm biased here, but I do believe what I've built solves an actual problem, looks pretty, is monetization and scalable.

That said, I really have no idea where to begin in the realm of looking for VC funding. A couple of questions that some of you all here might be able to help me with:

    • If I can fund it all myself, advertising included - am I missing an opportunity of growth or scaling by not looking for additional funding?

    • Because I am a newly launched app, do I have enough data yet to make a compelling presentation to a VC?

    • What might be expected of me in compensation for contributing capital, and what amount of money is reasonable to ask for to help promote and market an app on a larger scale over 6 months, 10k, 20k, 50k?

    • Any and all feedback in regards to venture capital allocation is much appreciated.

    Thanks!

Do business mentors/incubators cheat startups and get money from investors?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 09:21 PM PST

There are some people, who call themselves business coaches/incubators etc, who help startups go through the initial phases and get some customers. They then put them to the prospective investors, who can invest money in the startup. But, these middle men mentors/incubators may help the investors buy the startup for cheap and get huge profit for themselves. I am not telling that, everybody is like that. But, there is a definite possibility.

Launching my website in about 1 month...but competitor is attempting Slack/shared development. Thoughts?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 11:56 PM PST

    As described above.

I'm working on a peer-to-peer marketplace and I have pitched my idea and have started getting traction locally for a global website. I'm wrapping up the alpha versions of the site and planning on launching alpha version in about 3 weeks and beta version 2 weeks after that.

A competitor has emerged with a similar idea and is inviting others to join his programming team to help. It's a close-knit community and I don't it to seem like I stole his idea. I'd like to put my idea out there since it's much larger in scope than his project. In the end, I hope to extend far outside the small community that I'm launching unlike my competitor. Getting traction within the community will significantly help my efforts.

My concern if that if the competitor posts his design to the community with "here's my idea...join my project", it'll seem like Im encroaching on his project and/or I stole the source code. Doing so would be very disruptive if it seems like Im stealing the idea and shunned by the community despite having established inroads already.

I already been marketing my idea within a large metropolitan area with more than 188k impressions, 350 clicks, 19% interaction rate and 47 conversions just since I've been marketing in the past month in google alone. I have 20 people who have signed up already and are waiting for my launch outside my local group.

This idea has only been partially envisioned by the competitor...so no, I'm not worried about him directly, per say. The competitor already knows my idea and can track some very basic elements of my progress but still doesn't understand the entire scope.

TL;Dr: Should I post my landing page now to establish my idea, or should I wait a 2-3 weeks and finalize my alpha version? I'm worried about perception of theft of idea or project which would interrupt my plans to establish a marketplace within a moderately-sized closed-knit community.

How did you take it If someone said your business idea is silly or going to fail?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 04:29 PM PST

For context, I have two ideas and I'm having trouble deciding which one to do.

One is a mental health app to put it simply. Everyone I talked to loves this idea when I explained it to them properly. (Plus I'm a psychology student so it's my domain).

The other idea is an apparel company. Completely not tech related. The reason I thought of doing this was because I found out I could trademark something that no one has done before. And if I use that trademark on apparel it could land me a profit. This is the one people think is silly or going to fail.

But the thing is, the mental health app would take a long time compared to the apparel company I could start with in a month.

Odds of being a team player or co-founder in a start-up if my situation is like this.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 06:22 AM PST

I'm a 25{M} from Africa, looking to be a teammate or co-founder for a start-up.The start-up has to be solving problems that also affect Africans to a greater extent so it can easily resonate with me.e.g A Cryptocurrency start-up to solve remittance challenges or inflation issues, something like that.

I have a bachelors degree in accounting(which I didn't use) since I changed my career to being a Growth hacker at a start-up I was with from 2016-2018

Right now I'm now working on being a full stack web developer(self-taught) and could "perhaps" fit a junior dev role.

I'm also good at bookkeeping and accountancy since it is something I studied in college, but my career isn't going that way so it's just a complementary skill.

With Growth hacking, I'm also good at designing experiments, improving SEO, User Acquisition and Retention.

I have experience working in start-ups so I'm quite familiar with concepts like failing fast, product-market fit, etc etc.

I don't wish to be paid, but anything to make my life easier would be welcome, e.g paying for internet costs etc etc.

Best way to find a developer who would be interested in Co-Founding a start up?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 01:26 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

Long story short: I'm beginning to look at taking my app idea to the next level but I don't personally know any developers who would be up to the task. It wouldn't be a paid position, but rather an opportunity for a developer to work on a project out of their normal working hours to co-found this start up as a 'side hustle'.

Not easy I know, but any suggestions on how to find developers who may be interested?
