Do you work in more than one project at the time?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 05:32 PM PST

And if you do work in more than one project at the time (for example main job and startup as a side project), what project management tools do you use to keep things organized?

In my case, I have multiple "projects" each with a different group of people. My main job, a small business I run, a side project I'm working on, and then family related work. Is there a tool to get all these well organized and in sync?

Startup I worked for asking me for an assignment of rights after I've left

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 10:50 PM PST

Big red flag situation I'm leaving. I'm curious though if what they're saying is true. Will investors not touch them if a former engineer didn't sign an assignment of rights? Is there a standard fee if I was to sell my assignment, or would it depend on the industry/tech?

Tips on Lawyers for Early Stage SaaS / B2B Startup

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 06:46 PM PST

Tl;dr: did some searching and found a lot of advice on incorporation... but wanted to see if people had feedback on legal needs or strategies for SaaS / B2B startups that will need legal advice for business agreements with Enterprise clients.

Hey /r/startups, I wanted to get some perspective. We have an Enterprise software product that has picked up traction but... now we need to start formalizing agreements with clients who we want to sign. This could include Letters of Intent and Service Contracts (to outline responsibilities, options for annual renewal, IP ownership).

Googling and this sub have highlighted several open market services a la RocketLawyer, Legal Zoom that are easy and seemingly cost effective, but many people seem to say this is the wrong choice.

For a bootstrapped business that needs to build paperwork for these types of deals (but doesn't want to use a "cheap" option that inevitably leads to bigger problems down the road), what advice would folks who have done this offer?

Additional Context: US-based business with primarily American clients, Enterprise software product with monthly and annual billing options

I suck at marketing. I'm great at software engineering and graphic design. Can I realistically find someone social who can talk to people for me?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 02:41 AM PST

Indications of my talent: Multiple competition rewards, great university degrees, great portfolios, also highly profitable projects where I handled back-end, front-end and online marketing efforts.

But talking to people isn't my strong suit. It makes me anxious.

Can I realistically find someone social who can talk to people for me? Ideally, he'd find the clients and do all the talking with them. So I can focus on what I do best.

Based on my research of freelancers who have similar experience, I can bill $200/hr. So I'd be a freelancer (essentially) and he'd find the clients. I can incorporate as well but I don't want to share a company with anyone else (previous bad experience).

PS. Just to avoid confusions, I want to work as a freelancer (under my name or my corp's) and I'm asking if I really can find someone who can talk to people. Main need is finding clients right now

Edit. Do you think I can find a good sales-type person without giving equity? Instead of equity, I can give them a percentage of the project revenue and a percentage of the recurring revenue for the clients they bring, which is passive income.

    E-Mail Server Solutions

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 08:55 PM PST

    Hey y'all!

I have some good and bad news... my own success is starting to catch up to me and I would like some input. Currently, I run a dedicated server (Hostgator) for my business and it's all-in-one (web host, DB, E-Mail, etc). Due to a rather large uptick in users, I have noticed that more daily processes are being used to send E-mails. I would like to see what some of you are doing to send users E-mail and just some general advice would be fantastic.

    Some of my current options:

    • Buy another dedicated server that just does E-Mail and route it through MX records
    • Use a service like MailChimp or similar; however I'm not really familiar with these so I'm not sure how well it would work.
    • Use smoke signals :)

Just for some clarification, all my E-mails do is send billing receipts/failures (monthly or upon failure) and user opt-in post notifications. Post notifications are the main driver, does about 2,000 E-mails daily (for now).

    How important is an investment?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 04:17 PM PST

I listen to a ton of startup podcasts, read articles, founder interviews etc, some of which did it on their own with little to no money, others who really blew up when receiving funding. I know that there are different types of businesses and whatnot but for sake of conversation, let's just say you're at the stage where you have an idea and you're in the early stages of making it into a company, you have a product and are struggling with using your own money to grow (No wealthy family or friends to really give you the cash)

It seems that almost all 'major' success stories received funding and gave equity to others to get to where they are now, (There are a few wildly successful ones who did it all on their own), but it sort of seems like to be a huge hit of a company you need to give equity/raise funding, is this true? Is there a right time to do so? Do you recommend holding on as long as you can?

I need to find an app developer to help me out with a free app.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 08:11 PM PST

Since the app I am planning to make would not earn any money (not planning on running ads either) I would not have a way to pay the guy. I'm not asking for any developers here, and I'm not asking for freebies. I do not want to be that guy asking for free work, however if you are or know anyone or know anywhere I can find somebody with some entry level experience who may also have a passion for film it would be great to help me out. I know this is a reach for sure, and I realize that devs are usually paid pretty well.

With that being said, without revealing too much, the app I am planning on making has to do with connecting amateur film makers with each other. If you are/know where I can find somebody who is willing to do some free work (it's pretty basic nothing too complicated) then send them my way. I'd obviously give major credits and parts in making the app, and if it does make money i would most definitely pay.

I'm not going to lie to you, I have no previous credits but I think this app could solve a really big problem in people trying to start out in film.

    Thanks so much, Levi

Is everyone in startup software people?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 12:00 PM PST

Is there any way you can not be someone in software and still have a startup? Btw guys since my last post on here. I really appreciate the comments everyone left. Ive decided to build my skills. Starting with Java. Im a business student. Tried learning java but never really understood it because didnt really try hard. But since ive grown to be a better version of myself. I am going for it again. I hope i can make it this time and build start ups like you guys. Although its gonna take a long time. What do you guys think? Should I start with java or do something else? Dont take me the wrong way. I do enjoy and am fascinated by how the whole designing of applications work. Since I did some veryyyy veryyyy veryyyy basic SQL in Management Information Systems. I kinda enjoyed coding. Even tho it was just showing results in queries. Anyways what do you guys think? Should I do something else?

    Advertising Avenues

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 02:10 PM PST

I have setup a business around football (soccer) predictions using an AI. It is working well, however it's difficult to get subscribers given the stigma around these sorts of services especially as people just assume they're a scam. I've been using Facebook ads for the last few months and found an ad set which is working, however it is still very slow and currently unsustainable. I was wondering what other advertising avenues can I go down? My budgets aren't huge which unfortunately really restricts the options. Just as a side note the business resides in the UK which may be some sort of use.

Tech equity in a startup with some traction - am I getting screwed or being ungrateful?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 05:02 PM PST

2 months ago, I joined up with a guy who had a startup. Our deal was essentially I get 15% of the company, and he gets 75%, with the remaining 10% divided between some investors.

He had some traction - had raised 50k from some local angels a few months prior, and had some big deals in the works, and around 5k MRR. He had essentially proved the business model to some degree. I joined up and have been doing all the development but also helping in all other facet of the business. In practice, we divide nearly all tasks 50-50, except he does sales and I do tech separately.

Fast forward to now, and we're near the same point we started at, save we have some major deals in the works and actually less MRR (down to around 500 MRR) but should be ~500k mid 2020 with current deals.

I don't know, it just feels odd. We act like partners in every aspect of the business except for the equity distribution. I'm doing equal if not more work at times, and I don't have equal shares nor am I getting paid.

I feel that my feelings could be wrong, and maybe I'm being ungrateful. The potential future success is from deals he built, and the tech I've done is not out of this world or anything. He was paying a foreigner to do everything up to this point.

on the other hand, I work a ton, I'm not getting paid, and I contribute in every aspect of the business and I get 1/5 the equity.

I just want someone to tell me if I'm being screwed or if I'm being ungrateful. I don't care about the money so much, it's future money that may not ever exist... but something about it just makes me uneasy and I can't stop thinking about it.

E: I'm worth 100-200 on the open market and I do NOT get a salary from this job. Only equity compensation for now until we can pay ourselves a salary

Finding grants for a for-profit, non-tech, and not open yet startup. Anyone had any success here?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 05:00 PM PST

I'm currently in the funding stage for my family entertainment center, and while working on finding investors, have been scouring the internet for grants I qualify to apply for. It's proving very difficult to find any that aren't for a very specific type of business, or for a business that isn't up and running yet.

Has anyone had success at finding a grant in that category, or am I wasting my time looking?

Does anyone here work in a startup involving a physical device?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 06:32 AM PST

I was scanning the pinned thread at the top, and literally every startup was web or smartphone-based.

Are there any people here who are working on physical devices in their startup? It would be interesting to hear the experiences and what were the challenges. I myself am still deep in the research phase of the idea I have, aka "is this even possible at all", but I like occasionally thinking about what the next steps would be.

I need to get a few hundred survey responses from a specific demographic. (urban, young, professional). What's the easiest market research service I can use to get these responses. I figure this is the first step in developing a convincing business plan. I have a Google survey, but would like more voluminous and targeted responses..

How can I keep a clients website under my control, like squarespace/wix etc

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 01:44 PM PST

I am finishing creating a service that offers web presence creation for a monthly fee. What I do not want to happen is for a client to pay one month then demand they receive the website source code and cancel as that would be a giant loss for me. How can I prevent that?

How to find people that live in the Netherlands with a startup / that are about to start a startup?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 04:44 AM PST

I am 18 years old an I live in the Netherlands. My goal like most here is to launch my own start up. I've tried a few ideas but always have trouble getting things really moving and I would love to get some experience working in an early stage start up. I don't mind working for cheap if I think it's a good learning opportunity. I currently work in door to door sales with a minimal hourly wage and commissions.

I would really like to meet people that live in the Netherlands that are working on a startup. My skills are sales and marketing. Just let me know if you are interested by sending a direct message. Would love to meet some new people with common interests!

On Conducting Lean Market Research, can you advise?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 04:42 AM PST

Hey guys, I have an idea I would like to test the market for in a lean way, with maybe a $500 budget, to see if the project is worth my time. After listening to The Lean Startup, I formulated a plan to see if my project is viable and I should get to coding:

    1) Advertise on Instagram/Facebook with a budget of $60/day for a week ($420 Spent Here)

-Each Day, divide the $60 into advertising to 3 different demographics to see which one will be most responsive and thus, finding the target market. Cut the losers, and tweak the daily budget to get more of the target market's eyeballs on the ad.

    1. Create a landing page. ($50 Spent Here for Hosting, Domain, Etc). While the Ad must be effective, the landing page even more so. This is where I will communicate the core ideas of the project, and ask users to sign up.

-The Key here is that if users are inclined to sign up with their email, they can "reserve" their username for the app when it comes out. It is a social network in a sense, so that could incentivize them to sign up if they are really interested.

    1. Okay, so by now I know if the app has a market - use these numbers to justify creating an MVP, and push that out, sending these early enthusiasts the app and garnering their feedback.

How does this sound as a game plan to approach my venture? I am open to any advice on how to make this a successful experiment! (Also how to create great instagram ads on a budget would be dope)

    Thank you!
