I'm 30 and have not held a job for more than a year. Do I really need an IRA or Roth IRA? What about a 401k?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 11:58 AM PST

    Hello.

Basically my situation is a little more unique than normal. I got out of the military many years ago and since then I've been getting paid to go to school, working for a year, being unemployed, and getting paid to go to school again. Whatever.

I managed to save up a lot of money in that time, however I am not able to put money into any employer associated retirement accounts like a 401k or IRA. The reason being is that I simply have not had an employer for more than a year outside the military.

My question is, do I really need to concern myself with a 401k or IRA at this point? Can I even do so without having a stable job?

I basically just put whatever money I can scavenge into a savings account. I'm considering investing that money into a CD, bond, or index fund, in order to have it grow and assist with my retirement goals.

    Thanks.

    Dentist threatening collections agency

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:45 PM PST

I had a crown put in five years ago, and now my dentist is threatening to send my unpaid bill to a collections agency.

The dentist said my insurance denied the claim - all five times they submitted it including one appeal. My insurance provider says the dentist never sent x-rays with the first four attempts. Then their last attempt at the claim, they sent Xrays of what looked to be post-treatment Xrays. Again it was denied since the xray didn't show a need for the treatment.

In any event, the dentist wants $800 from me. Am I responsible for this? It sounds to me like the dentist either sold me a bag of goods, or f'd up the xrays.

    Thanks!

    Mark

Apple Cash has my balance as -$300 because I filled a dispute over a transfer

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 02:09 PM PST

On December 4 I tried sending my brother $300 through Apple Cash it initially didn't send and I had the money in my account for about an hour and a half.

When I checked my account was missing the money I texted my brother and he showed me screenshots that he never got the money so after calling Apple customer support they gave me the runaround saying they saw the money was taken out and it was completed.

So I went to my bank and filed a dispute with that transaction with all of the screenshots and evidence I had on record. Yesterday my balance is -300 after a "balance adjustment" and green dot is completely disregarding my existing case number and all of the screenshots and evidence I have what can I do to fix this?

Why do I have such a huge psychological block on making large purchases for things that will be cheaper over time, vs making small purchases that can be used once or twice?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 11:44 AM PST

I've been talking with my wife about this and she does it too, and I legitimately don't understand where this mental block is coming from.

For instance, buying dinner for $40 sounds much more doable than spending $300 on a month's worth of food, even if it makes more financial sense to. Spending $35/month on a gym membership that I never end up using because the gym is too far away sounds reasonable, but spending $200 on exercise equipment I'd actually use sounds daunting. Spending a couple hundred bucks on a used phone that'll last me a year or so is relatively easy, but spending $4-600 on one that will last me four years seems crazy.

Why do I have this mental block?

Warning: Credit Karma just logged me into someone else's account

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 04:28 PM PST

Delete if not allowed, but I figured I should warn you guys about it. I just tried to log into Credit Karma and when I logged in my score showes as about 100 lower than it was. Freaking out I went to credit report and it showed a bunch of accounts that weren't mine. I went on here to check if anyone else was getting this issue and by the time I went back to the tab it had logged me out "due to inactivity" after the 10 seconds it took to pull up PF. In the top right is said "Hi Timothy? (Not you?) Log In" as it does when you are logged out. My name is definitely not Timothy.

CK doesnt seem to have a number I can call and I don't do twitter to tweet them. My guess is we have another data breach concern to worry about here very soon.

Edit: Forgot to mention that in that logout to inactivity page there was someones else's email in the log in. I use Google to autocomplete passwords and log in information and my email was present when I first tried to log in, not that random one I saw after.

    Financial rock bottom.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 05:39 PM PST

I hope this is the right place to post, mainly looking for advice weather it's financial, personal experience, or legal.

To sum it up, my power was cut off today I was unaware exactly how far behind I was, and holding off with payment arrangements because my house is in a state of forcloseur.

A small bit of my history, I had my daughter 4 years ago, and went through a brutal seperation with her mother who demanded everything possible. Paid her 1500 a month in total till she "got back on her feet"

Met a second woman and we rushed an engagement and turned out she was worse then the devil. When I came home from gone to work she packed up everything I owned took my savings (even my daughter's piggy bank no word of a lie) and left. Her job was pay utilities. The next week every single utility was final notice after breaking the promise to pay, so those options were used up pay now or disconnection immediately.

Regardless I had everything semi-taken care of... Except my mortgage I was and still am severally struggling to upkeep.

I have about $10,000 saved, I have held off my payments in fear of falling short and still lose my my house as well as the money I tried to sink into it to save it.

I owe Around $11,500 on mortgage, $1,500 on credit card. $1,000 on power and $600 on phone. The rest of my bills are in good standing, but as you can see... I do not have the funds to put all into good standing and it's at the point where what does not get paid I lose.

I do not have any family, let alone family that can loan me a few grand to settle everything up.

Does anyone have any experience or advice? Easy specially when it comes to the forcloseur? I have no issues taking a credit hit and starting new if it means I am not stressed and I can afford my life style.

Title Loan at 173% interest and another loan at 99% interest. Paying back on fixed income (SS).

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:12 PM PST

Hi. Helping out a friend in a poor financial situation in Texas that is over 65 and has no other income besides social security.

They receive $1,200 in social security each month, but they have two extremely predatory loans.

    1. Title loan
      1. car value: $2,800
      2. original loan: $3,000
      3. interest rate: 173%
      4. monthly interest payment: $411
      5. current balance: $4,600 with interest and fees
      6. Note: the car is no longer needed, but the title company says if it's surrendered to them they will only take it to auction and can't guarantee any amount over $300 will be received.
    2. Unsecured loan
      1. original loan: unknown
      2. monthly payment: $180
      3. interest rate: 99%
      4. current balance: $1,900

    A couple of questions:

    1. Is it legal to threaten bankruptcy with the lenders so that they negotiate a better interest rate?
    2. Is it better to actually file bankruptcy first and then negotiate?
    3. Is it true social security benefits are protected from creditors? or is that just during the bankruptcy process?

    Thanks PF'ers!!

Our son passed away in Dec...any information about settling his estate?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 03:36 PM PST

As the title says, our youngest son passed away suddenly on Dec. 18, 2019. We're still waiting on the Death Certs. in order to access his bank account...I'm unfamiliar with the process of settling another adult's estate.

He was a renter and he owned his car, he had a Student loan and maybe some credit cards. Where do I start or should I even start? It's a horrible task for a Father to do.

How to go about getting a raise right after a COLA increase?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 04:58 AM PST

Good morning PF! I need some help on going about a raise in March, even after we as a department are getting a 2% cost of living adjustment at the end of January.

For some background, I work in IT as a support analyst (fancy term for helpdesk) in Nashville. I get paid decent for what I do, but I now some of my coworkers make at least 10k more than I do. The end of March marks my one year official anniversary with the company (I contacted with them for 4-5 months prior), and I crush tickets (always top two or higher for ticket resolutions, equal to about 30% of daily ticket counts by myself on a team of 9).

I want to know how I should approach a raise on top of the one we are all getting because I feel that I've more than proven to do my work to my company and I know that some people get paid more to do less than me. Any help is appreciated!

Wife left now I have the mortgage

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:55 PM PST

So I work a job that makes $14 hour and I my wife and I are separating. We are doing this as peacefully as possible but now I am trying to figure out my budget. My mortgage with everything escrow into it is $810. I don't have a car payment just a credit card that is $140. The utilities are around $100-200 depending on power usage. Insurance on my car is cheap since I just have liability. I worked out a budget sheet and in which I receive around $270 every month from the VA. Anyways I see that I will have roughly $300-$400 open for food, gas and what ever other expenses arise. So in reality how screwed am I?

I have done quite allot of reading and there are allot of people that are saying that my rent/mortgage should be around $500 which at this point without getting a roommate this is unreachable without selling the house which I have only owned for a couple years. At this point I a few words from a actual break down and well to Reddit I turn for advise. Of course I am looking for a part time job but I didn't get one other then finding ways to live on that budget. Is this really doable?

I was young, dumb and ignorant, and early 20 year old me thought a credit card debt was never going to catch up with me. Just got a letter in the mail saying I’m being sued by a debt collector.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 06:47 PM PST

I (26m) living in WI, took a credit card out when I was 18, maxed it out and basically ignored all calls, letters, etc. (I know, big mistake). I have not been served papers yet but I received a letter in the mail from a defense attorney saying I was being sued by a collections agency. I look on the circuit court website and sure enough, there is an open case under my name with a $3400 debt. I cannot pay in full at this time but I have a pretty good paying job and could probably set enough aside in 2 months to have this paid, but I am worried that won't be soon enough. What should my next steps of action be?

Will IRS know about my capital losses from Coinbase?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 07:27 AM PST

In 2019 I bought some cryptocurrency and I ended up selling everything for $2000 loss. No gains. In 2019 I didn't sell any of my assets for capital gain, which means I can deduct $2000 against other types of income. My question is, will Coinbase (a financial institution, based in the US, where I purchased crypto), send information about that loss to the IRS?

    I read that:

Coinbase is required to provide a 1099-K if you engaged in at least 200 cryptocurrency transactions and the total aggregated value of those transactions is equal to or greater than $20,000

I know I'm allow to deduct this loss and it's perfectly legal, but it would be nice if IRS see that loss from me and the Coinbase. I'm afraid that if IRS will see that deduction only from me, and not from Coinbase, It could trigger a warning or something (not that I have anything to hide, but who needs that attention?)

To be a bit more specific, I'm talking about Coinbase Pro. Technically:

I bought ETH on Coinbase, and didn't sell anything.

I bought XRP and BTC on Coinbase Pro, and sold everything there for a $2k loss.

Is it possible to still go to college?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 06:29 PM PST

    I am a 21 (F), and I work full-time (M-F/8-5) with no college degree.

Basically- I realized unless I want to be broke for the rest of my life, I need to get my Bachelors.

After graduating high-school early, I took a few courses at a community college, but dropped out after my first year. I regret this a lot, and feel like I missed my oppurtunity.

I need to work full-time to be able to pay my bills.

In my eyes, I feel like my only option would be to get a loan to pay for all my schooling & take night classes.

Do you have any tips on how I could do this? Or does it seem too out of reach.

I make about $1,800 a month with my bills being:

    Car Insurance: $125
    Phone: $100

    Rent: $650

    Misc. Necessities: $200

    Thanks. :)

Would like your thoughts on how to dig myself out of this mess.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 07:01 PM PST

Hey everyone! I've [58F] been lurking on this sub for some time in hopes to turn my situation around. Myself and my husband [62M, retired except for driving taxi occasionally] made some questionable choices over the years, to say the least, and I want to fix it. I am aware of the PF Wiki and the flowchart; but due to the magnitude of debt, curious to see if there are strategies I don't know about that we can use to get this cleaned up quickly. We have no savings and currently live in an RV - we enjoy the on-the-go lifestyle, but it's depreciating quickly and] we are already underwater on it. No kids. We'd eventually like to settle down into an apartment or small home.

    Monthly income:
-Renting out our home for $1900/mo. Home value is 250k. On the first mortgage we owe 70k. On the second mortgage (home equity loan) we owe 22k. (92k owed in total)
    -$4,200/mo from full-time job

    Monthly expenses:
    -557: RV payment
-450: Life, car, and house insurance
    -970: mortgage payment on home
-800: rent for housing RV at an RV park
    -290: Cell bill (2 adults)
    -700: CC1
    -300: CC2
    -300: CC3
    -215: Subscriptions
-125: Storage to hold our furniture
    -820: Car payment
    -400: Gas
    -1500: Food

    Debt:
-92k on home (mentioned earlier) with monthly payments of 970
-8.2k on car: 10 months left at 820 worth 25k
    -59k RV: it's worth 39k

    CC1: 16.74% APR, $25,000 - monthly payment 700
    CC2: 17.49% APR, $8,000 - monthly payment 300
    CC3: 16.74% APR, $12,000 - monthly payment 300

It's clear we're spending more than I make and budgeting will be my first corrective step. But any other ideas on how to manage everything - especially CC debt - or even moral support - is greatly appreciated.

I'm going to try doing my taxes myself for the first time ever...

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 05:03 PM PST

My mom has done my taxes for the last 12 years since I had my first job and now we're estranged so I'm going to attempt to do this myself. I moved to Colorado in the middle of the year last year so I'm going to have taxes in 2 different states. My sister has been renting my house from me back in my home state. Is it true that I need to claim the rental on both Louisiana and Colorado taxes? Also, is it pretty easy to do taxes for 2 different states using something like Turbo Tax? One other question I have involves Uber/Lyft. I drove for both briefly in my home state but made less than $400 at each. Does my income from those need to be claimed since it was so little? I saw different answers when trying to Google it...some saying that nothing under $600 mattered and others saying to claim it no matter how little I made so idk what to claim on that. Oh, and I almost forgot, I also repaid a bonus from the job I left for leaving early...well "repaid". I wrote them a check almost 6 months ago that never got deposited so the money is still still in my bank account. I'm wondering if that's going to screw anything up?

New Job - HSA vs PPO

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 06:36 PM PST

Been interested in moving to an HSA for a long time but I'm not sure it's the right financial move at my new job since the contribution amounts between PPO and HDHP are so similar and PPO is medically so much safer. I am a 32 year old single male in generally good health (though currently a bit overweight) who has had some big surgeries in the past but doesn't foresee any like that on the horizon. I currently max out 401k and backdoor rIRA since I got a late start on both (last year). Totally clueless however how much it would cost to visit the Dr for a physical or get medication on an HDHP when you're paying for the whole thing.

    PPO 1 - $93/month. $2000 deductible, $4000 OOP Max, 0% Coinsurance. Normal copays.

    PPO 2 - $0/month. $2500 deductible, $6850 OOP Max, 30% Coinsurance. Normal Copays.

    HDHP 1 - $84/month. $1500 deductible, $4000 OOP Max, 0% Coinsurance.

    HDHP 2 - $0/month. $5000 deductible, $6650 OOP Max, 30% Coinsurance.

If anyone could give some guidance it would be greatly appreciated!

Also while I'm here, I filled out the new W4. If I pick single, no further deductions etc, how will that effect my post tax earnings compared to when I used to take 2 allowances?

Can an apartment landlord charge old fees in new rent after I point out mistake?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 04:38 PM PST

The other day I looked at my bill and realized that there were things (renting washer dryer, trash fee, etc) that weren't being charged for any of the past few months I've been at this apartment complex. I was concerned that maybe the bills were supposed to be paid through a different website or service so I reached out to the landlord to see if that was the case. I didn't want to miss a payment on something and have it impact my credit. Turns out they just made an accounting mistake and did not add in those charges.

However, now they are trying to retroactively charge me those fees for the last few months. It's not a ton of money, but this doesn't seem to make sense since the time has passed already and they probably would never have discovered the error if I hadn't told them. I theoretically could have went to the end of my lease without paying. Are they allowed to charge me now? Should I try to fight those charges? Or should I just eat the cost?

Where/who should I seek help for old medical bills and possible shady practices from the facility?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 06:09 PM PST

I posted in r/legaladvice but didn't get much help.

    Long story short:

    • In 2015 I lived with my parents as a college student, over 18 so medical services were in my name. They are financially irresponsible so I have no idea if they paid the deductibles.

    • A majority of these bills came for me while I was in basic training for the Army (Jan-April 2016) and they threw them in the trash so I never knew of their existence until now.

    • Recently received medical bills from 2015 (no late fees, never sent to collections)

    • I get on the phone with them, agree to settle the debt for 80% of the total (was dumb and didn't get this in writing)

    • This week, I receive a bill for the remaining 20% as well as a new one for an additional amount from the same facility for a different service.

Are they fucking with me to see how much they can get out of me if I don't have proof of payment or what should I do in this situation?

Is there a place or person I can talk to and show these documents to that can help with financial issues?

Why does Vanguard have such high minimums?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 02:09 PM PST

    Hello,

This doesn't apply to me because I am already heavily invested but...

Why does Vanguard have such high min for example VTSAX?

It's the same thing as many other total market funds (performance wise)

Is there some clear advantage that people are failing to see?

I know of a few advantages.. - Tax efficient mutual funds (VIPER patent) - you essentially own a part of Vanguard by owning a fund - greater number of holdings than comparable market funds (hardly matters) - vanguard fanboy train

    Three interviews tomorrow, no car

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 05:50 PM PST

Luckily two are within walking distance, and they are set for 10:30 and 11:30 respectively. The third is sixty miles from me and will require at least a month of daily back and forth drives to get the training to allow me to work from home.

The 10:30 one is for a bakery/coffeeshop, and the women running it seemed super nice. However, I've never worked directly with other women.

The 11:30 is a hardware store and much more my forte.

Since I have no wheels, I'm tempted to try to work two jobs, (two others I scouted today said hiring entry level was happening and a lot of it), within easy walking/ easier biking distance, for six months, or more, until I have a couple grand saved for a 75 or 85% down payment on a small 4x4 truck or AWD car. The AWD or 4x4 is necessary for driving in my area, as it's Lower Rockies and has fairly crummy driving conditions regularly.

Since my rent is my cooking and laundering for the rentees, and my only true bill is my cellphone, around 70$ per month, is this a feasible short term plan?

I have no credit or savings, and my plan is to create an emergency fund first, then the down payment. Depending on the model of vehicle, that's why it's probably only going to be 75/85%, instead of my wished for 100%.

I tried to do a backdoor Roth IRA by converting the maximum Roth contribution. However, I didn’t convert the amount in time, so ended up earning $1 of interest. Do I also convert that $1 to a Roth? It is technically over the limit. Or else, what do I do with it?
