My boss wants me to pirate windows license keys for 600 computers.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 06:35 AM PST

I work as a computer technician at a midsized company (around 20 employees). We buy computers in bulk at various conditions and refurbish them. Recently my boss acquired 600 windows laptops that were previously activated with KMS. For the non technical that means that the all can be connected to one server that will validate the windows installation on all of them. Obviously when we sell it it won't be activated. My boss would like avoid paying the $100 it cost for a valid windows key and told me to pirate it. I really need this job and he told me that if I want to keep this job I must pirate it. Can I be held responsible for pirating if he is ever caught?

Required to keep a stillborn for 24 hours? [Texas]

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 03:46 AM PST

My friend said she gave birth to a stillborn in Texas a couple of years ago. She wanted to spend a short time with it, but they told her the law required her to either give it up right away or keep it for 24 hours. Was this actually the law, and now that she's pregnant again is it still the law?

(FL)Landlord possibly turned down water pressure

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 08:42 AM PST

I've been at my apartment for 5 years. The old leasing company didn't have water included in the rent. They took the bill, added it to the itemized list of charges and sent you a copy.

During our last lease the complex was bought out by a new company. The new company charges you a fixed rate that was pretty much what we were already being charged. They touted it as easier than manually adding it to every lease in the complex. They only bill you extra if you went over double the usage.

Here's where I have an issue, about a month after the lease was signed they came in and put flow limiters on the kitchen sink and the showerhead. The washing machine is also having issues getting rid of the detergent on our clothes. I had to buy a new showerhead just so my wife can wash her hair properly. The bathroom sink is still the same so I checked to see it's flow and I'm only getting 0.2 GPM. I also know other tenants in the complex and they're having similar issues. I put in a maintenance request and they said everything is fine. The city reports no water main issues to the complex either. I'm guessing they turned down the water from outside the apartment. I'm also suspecting they did this to pocket the difference because now I'm paying more than I'm using.

Is there any legal remedy to this or are we just stuck paying for it?

[SC] My mom keeps threatening to call "Mental Health Crisis" to "come take you away". Please help, what are my options??

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 09:18 AM PST

    Hi guys.

    19M here, for reference.

I live with my mom at her house in South Carolina. Given the circumstances, I'm saving up to move out as quickly as possible. I think I have to be here for the next week's, though, because leases generally start at the beginning of each month?

For the past couple months, whenever my mom and I get into an argument or disagreement about something she threatens to call "mental health crisis". She threatens definitely over 5 times a day. Sometimes it happens when I'm just sitting down watching TV or playing video games.

It seems to be threatened when I'm not paying attention to her (i.e. I've been in my room for a few hrs) or when I question her about anything (i.e. why am I buying all the groceries for the household at 19 years old).

She says they're going to come and lock me away, and that she's going to put ask I be "held for 90 days"? For reference, I have no background of any issues and feel very healthy, aware of my surroundings, etc.

What really scares me, also, is that my mom keeps threatening to blame injuries on me. She has scratch's/bites up one arm from our new dog, and she said shell tell them I did that. She says I'm a "threat" whenever we argue (nonviolent) and she's calling them.

Please help me in any way you can. I'm more than happy to provide extra info as needed. Really, I'm asking - how can I protect myself?

Someone I know is being kept in prison past his out date

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 04:43 AM PST

Hi, this is all happening in Wisconsin. I work at a homeless shelter and one of the women staying here has a son in prison. He was supposed to get out on the 3rd but he told his mom that a lot of men get released 1-2 weeks late because of paperwork and bureaucracy. Is that legal?

Request to be excused from jury duty denied, literally cannot go... what now?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 03:31 PM PST

My hometown is in central IL, USA. My mom lives there. I'm a 26 y/o PhD student in Australia, with my legal residence being in IL still. My mom sent me the jury summons, and I thought no problem, I'll tell them my situation and all will be well (especially because the same situation was true a few years ago, and that's what happened).

The form was online, I filled out an "excused absence request" for reasons of secondary education. In the box asking for further information, I told them I was a PhD student at [university] in [town] in Australia. Currently residing in [town], Australia. Unable to travel to the USA to attend.

Today I found out that my request was refused and I am expected to appear. I called the courthouse to which I was summoned to ask for more information, and I was told that this decision is final, and I will need to appear or face legal consequences.

Surely I'm not the only one who thinks this is totally unreasonable... but I'm not sure which steps to take next. Can someone help?

How to get a Social Security Card and Birth Certificate for adult born in US at home?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 09:05 AM PST

An adult individual was born in the US at home. Parents never applied for social security number or birth certificate. Adult never attended school—was home schooled. Adult cannot get a job or bank account without ID and SSN. How does one go about getting a SSN and birth certificate if they do not have any of the documents to apply for a birth certificate and social security number.

Retail store charging more than marked price

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 07:33 AM PST

There is a market in my town that routinely charges more than the stamped price on their items. Specifically on items they stamped the price for themselves. When it's brought up to the cashier they just say "that's how it is in the system". This is just a small convenience store so the price difference is never more than a few dollars but it's still annoying. I found this: https://www.nist.gov/system/files/documents/2017/04/28/US-Pricing-Laws-All-States_2.pdf Page 122 seems to suggest their practice is not legal - how do I report their practice? I know I could just stop going there but that doesn't help the rest of my community. Also they only give you an itemized receipt if you ask for one so most people won't even catch the discrepancy.

Landlord's daughter is in charge now and refuses to fix the place.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 12:41 PM PST

I'll keep the Lifetime story outta this (unless it's needed), right now my family and I are in a jam with our landlord and more importantly his daughter.

LL had a stroke, so his daughter took charge of everything - all the way from New York. She's been harassing and rude, and when we mention things need to be fixed she gets snooty. Finally one day she told us to take it up with her father, so we did. He reduced our rent, and now she's furious.

The three major problems we're having are

    - all the water pipes are actually rotting rubber water hoses

    - the gas has no central shut off valve (and we actually had to beg the gas company to not shut it off)

    - we have no reliable heating, just two 19070s or 60s wall units that are unreliable and always go out.

I'm sure there is more information I should supply, I am just so exhausted from crying. I have all my emails from her, and we live in West Virginia. We want to sue, so we can be free of this place, but we don't even know if we actually have a case and we have zero money to hire an attorney.

    Evicting fired nanny.....

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 12:22 PM PST

I'm curious before I speak with my lawyer tomorrow if anyone knows the eviction laws for my situation. I gave a nanny a live in position with room and board in the home that I own in Rhode Island. I recently let her know that she is no longer needed. She wasn't very good and it didn't work out. She slept so much and I believe is likely Ill.. I told her she needs to leave two weeks ago and she actually was only employed by me for less than a month before that time and I'm no longer paying her. She said she's looking for a place and I've told her at least 4x's that she has to leave. I'm concerned that she hasn't been looking for a place and she basically locked herself in her room. Does anyone know the rules about getting her to leave in the state of Rhode Island.? Honesty, the timing was bad before the holidays and I'm a peaceful person, but I need her to leave so I can get someone new.

Any recommendation of steps to be taken?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 09:12 AM PST

I currently live with my wife and daughter, and we also live with our mother in law. She has begun dating a man who over the past few months has been very verbally nasty to me, and often "aggressive" and "alpha".

Today, after he began a heated argument, he decided I was in his way and shoved me. I have began to suspect that he would lay hands on me and thankfully I had been recording (audio) when he did. I also have admission on the recording that he did it, and my wife saw as well. We live in a one party consent state so the audio is valid.

He says he doesn't "live" with us, but he is there all the time. His name isn't on the lease. I am going to possibly approach the landlord with this, but I am wondering if I could/should file a police report with what I have now. Any tips would be great, because I'm beginning to worry about what else he could do. The lease is up in 3 months so after that we are gone.

i'm a cocktail waitress, casino makes me pay for a mistake

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 03:55 AM PST

    hi legal advice,

I'm a cocktail waitress at a casino. I accidentally gave change back for $100 to the wrong guest. Change was $85. He left the machine, and I did not know, so I gave one drink to the lady he ordered it for, and the other one to the dude, along with $85 of change in his same slot machine. Turns out, this is the WRONG DUDE. The original guy left his slot machine. No one stopped me, the other guy conned me and took the money and the drink.

The managers find out later and make me pay the guy $100. I get mad and I'm like why do I have to pay? And they're like, cuz we have to pay the guest back. And I'm like ok fine here is the money but I need it back tonight or tomorrow. I am leaving with nothing. This is all I made tonight.

    And they're like, okay.

This is totally illegal in the state I live in, which is California.

I told them to look at the surveillance and they said they will.

I'm going to work tomorrow early to speak with the head manager. What should I expect?

My friend just told me he has to pay for his promotion at the MTA (NYC). Is this legal?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 09:39 AM PST

He says this is commonplace there that everyone pays this 'promotion document processing fee' on an increasing sliding scale. For his lowly position it's $65. I've never heard of this happening anywhere but MTA -and NYC in general- is notorious for taking advantage of its citizens. Is this legal?

NY family member, who is attorney, stole from family house.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 06:06 AM PST

My family member in NY had not paid rent and lived alone in our house for years. We finally evicted her but before she left, she pick and chose what she wanted, including the couch that's been here for almost 10 years.

When asked to return the things before pursuing legal action, she claimed that she let all her attornies in the area to be on alert and started to spread lies about it before anything happened. Is this illegal?

Also what is the procedure for getting things back? Is it tough to prove that those things were taken by her and owned by the owner of the house?

New job, discrepancies between benefits I was promised at offer and reality. What are my options?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 07:56 AM PST

I just started a new job. A month ago, when my boss sent me my offer letter, she included an employee handbook that said that benefits (including health insurance) begin the first of the month after the hire date. Now, I am told by HR that they begin the first of the month after 30 days on the job.

I did not sign the handbook. But is there any recourse for me here? It's really disrupting my access to medicine and COBRA at my last job is through the roof.

Mom charged debt in my name, need help with bankruptcy

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 09:11 AM PST

hi. Burner account due to privacy and on mobile so sorry for formatting.

I live in Colorado TLDR version: mom took out $50K in credit card debt in my name. I agreed to just file BANKRUPTCY if she paid for it and handled the court docs (she is a paralegal) to save the family peace. This was over 3 years ago and the bankruptcy still has not been completed. I am not allowed to handle it myself but I want to but I don't know next steps at all.

Long version: my mom took out 50k in credit cards in my name. She was paying them off for a while but got in a car wreck which caused a brain injury resulting in memory loss. She stopped making payments because she didn't remember the debt. By the time she remembered it none of us could pay the amount the debt collectors wanted per month. I contemplated pressing charges but if she got jail time (at the time) myself, my grandfather, my sister, and my infant niece would have ended up homeless as mom is breadwinner.

Eventually we agreed that my best option would be bankruptcy because I was in my early 20's. She is a licensed (?Idk if that's the right term) paralegal so she agreed to pay the attorney fees and handle everything in terms of the documents as I was a fulltime student, with a job and was watching my infant niece every night. It took over a year to get her to file it. But it got dismissed (attorneys team missed something that they filled out wrong on their end)

And I have been waiting ever since to get it filed again. (3 years) I now live with my grandfather and my fiance in my grandfather's house. It is falling apart. Literally we haven't had running water for over a month due to pipes freezing and we can't afford to get them fixed yet.

I want to move on with my life. Live in a house that has working plumbing, and get married to my fiance. But everything is at a standstill.

I am giving my mom another week to file it again but if she doesn't I am going to look into getting done myself.

But I have literally no idea what to do. She kept me in the dark this whole time so I don't know the first steps.

Any advice would be appreciated. Sorry it was long

    Marriage For Visa Reasons?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 11:40 AM PST

I live in a country out of the States, and gay marriage is not legal here. My gay partner lives in New York. We met while he was here because of a work contract 4-years ago and have been together since. We love each other very much, but cannot meet often because of the distance.

Recently, the topic of marriage came up. And while it is a beautiful subject, I don't really see a point as I believe that a marriage where live on opposite sides of the world isn't really a marriage. Even if I were able to stay in New York for an indefinite time period, I still have my job that I really love.

However, he also mentioned work permits for foreign spouses (would I count as a spouse?) and we agreed to do our research. In my country, the process is a bit complicated and requires that you stay for a couple months in the country before the work permit is issued. However, that is not an option for me because I have to work.

    So here are my questions:

    1. How long would it take to obtain a work permit? If we get married, it would be in New York because gay marriage is legal there. However, I could not stay very long because neither of us has enough money saved up and he does not make enough money to provide for the both of us.
    2. Would I be eligible to apply for a work permit? Again, we love each other very much, but the actual facetime we've had is very short due to our distance.
    3. How would I be able to prove that we are not getting married just because I need a work permit? Again, I would need it because he cannot make enough to provide for the both of us.

    Thank you.

Our neighbors told us that our dog died, and now a year later they have one that looks very alike if not the exact same.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 02:10 PM PST

Christmas eve of 2018 we were informed by our neighbors, that our dog had been hit by a car. Something seemed off because we never found the body, and our other neighbors reported not seeing it happen. But, we believed them so we never filed a missing report. So, here we are now, a year later and they have family visiting with a dog that looks like ours. My dad just went to go file our dog missing. So what other things can we legally do to find out if it is our dog. I mean it could really just be a coincidence, but we wanna be sure. This is in Louisiana US.

Hired an independent videography company to film a music video for my band. We have tried contacting them to pay them for their services, but they will not reach us back.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 12:25 PM PST

    Location: Florida

Please let me start this off by saying we are not trying to dodge paying these people for their work. In fact it's the opposite. A few months back we hired an independent videography company to film and edit a music video for my band. We had a few red flags at the beginning of hiring them (i.e. not getting back to us in a timely manner), but we loved their price and abilities so we went with them. Honestly, we loved everything about working with them. They hired actors, made props, the whole nine. The experience was incredible and they were great people. Once we finished filming we tried to stay in communication with the main person who we've been talking to throughout this whole process. He didn't fully dissapear, but there were weeks at a time where we didn't hear anything. We were promised updates, teasers of the video to promote and post, and the BTS (behind the scenes) footage that we paid for. We didn't get much back at all. At first we understood, but then it was getting frustrating. We stayed civil and positive, not trying to upset them if their multiple excuses are indeed true. At this point we just wanted the video. Long story short, we got the video back and loved it! We put it up online and the release went well. The problem now: We want to pay them but they won't send over the invoice. We signed a contract with them and it's been a little over a month now that we've recieved the video. We are worried they're trying to pull something. On top of this, we spent roughly $200 on a BTS person. The person did come and he took pictures/videos but we have not recieved them yet. We just want to be done with this mess and pay them. We have proof of contact. We have asked to pay on multiple occasions and through multiple platforms (text, chats, calls, etc.) The last time we were in communication they messaged us first. This was the only time we expressed how frustrating this was. They actually responded again and apologized. They said they would get us the footage and send the payment information, but of course we got nothing. We don't think they'll get a lawyer, but if they do, could they do anything to us even though we ARE trying to pay them and they didn't hold up their complete part of the contract? As time passes, I'm thinking "well if they want their money, they'll come and contact us!" But there's a little demon in the back of my mind saying "if I stop messaging them periodically, they'll try to get us for failing to pay them." We just want to pay them what we owe. Do they have a case? Should we continue to just message them for the invoice? At this point I don't even care about not getting the BTS footage, I just want to be done. Any advice is helpful. Thank you for your time.

    Can/Shall I Sue?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 09:16 AM PST

I am based in the UK. During the last two years an ex partner of mine has harrased me, my new partner and her child. She used social media to slander me with claims of rape, abuse, domestic violence, child abuse, the list goes on and on.

Of course as soon as it started I went to the police immediately who pretty much just gave her a slap on the wrist and said not to do it again.

Obviously this didnt work cos within a few weeks we had a knock at the door from the police as they had an "anonymous" call to child services saying me and my partner "raped, beat, starved and made (wait for it) SNUFF MOVIES in front of the kid!! Of course there was no evidence of any of these claims and I immediately made a complaint to the police because it was obvious to anyone who made the allegations.

After weeks of pushing them to investigate the police finally gave in and found it was of course my ex. Again it resulted in nothing more than a slap on the wrist again. A few weeks after I was stopped in the street by an adult male who called me a peadophile and a fight broke out. Turns out it was one of her friends of course.

Because of the harrasment online and in our town my partner and I decided to move and shut down out social media which we both used for our respective businesses. Not to mention the breakdown in our relationship. Because of this woman. I have lost my business, my online social life and had to move towns.

She has stopped using mine and my partner's image and names on her public social media platforms but every now and then I still get messages from friends telling me she's constantly talking about how she was abused and raped etc on twitter (where she started the harassment) yes she may not be using my name but it's obvious who she's talking about and the fact many of her followers are local and already know I am who she's referencing as she named me before the police took action.

Any advice would be very welcome thank you.

    Geek squad like side business

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 12:03 PM PST

Hi, sorry if this is in the wrong place or breaking any rules. I've tried googling but can't get a specific answer.

I currently do tech support in a retirement city and constantly get calls from older people having trouble connecting devices, using computers, trouble with smart TVs, etc.

It's hard to help them over the phone and most of it my company doesn't like us troubleshooting because it's not our equipment. I've been thinking about starting a side business where I go to their house and help them with their stuff and charge a small price. I figure it would be a good side hustle and I can help some of these older folk who really struggle with this stuff.

My questions are what are the legalities of this and is something I need some sort of permit for or license. Also say I install chrome or something on someone's computer and then a week later they blame me because their computer crashes. Can I be sued? I'm really bad at all this but I'd really like to do it. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
