I thought I had insurance, but my employer had canceled it, now I owe about $2000 in medical bills that I cannot possibly afford. What can I do?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 01:23 AM PST

I quit my job on September 6th, 2019. I had given two weeks' notice and we were on good terms when I left the company. I asked my employer about the insurance and I was told that I would have full coverage until the end of September.

Thinking that I should use my premium insurance before I get a cheaper one with higher copayments, I visited two doctors and did a bunch of tests (Sept 4 and Sept 9). In both cases, the front desk staff accepted my insurance card and I only paid the standard co-pay.

During the last week of December, both medical offices contacted me that I am responsible for the entire bill because the insurance company "recouped the money back " because my coverage was terminated at the end of August. The total is nearly $2000, mostly because of the tests. I am currently unemployed and cannot afford to pay that much money.

Searching through my emails I found a notice of termination dated September 5 indicating that my insurance will be terminated by the end of August unless I sing up for continued coverage. I had not read that email, but the funny part is that the notice is sent on September 5th saying that the coverage will end on 8/31 which is one week before the notice!

What can I do? I have not contacted my previous employer or the insurance company yet, as I am trying to figure out what is the best way of dealing with this.

Is it possible to cancel an at fault auto claim, once I have begun? If yes, will my premium increase?

Sorry if this has been asked before, I am on mobile and I'm having a hard time searching.

    Hit by retired cop

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 08:12 AM PST

I was sideswiped by a retired cop & he kept driving & didn't stop. The collision sounded worse the it actually was .......my driver's mirror shattered, over $1000 in damages. I had to follow him 1/2 mile into shopping plaza since he had an FOP emblem blocking the 1st # on his 4 # plate.

I called police who did not cite him for hit & run or obstruction of plate because driver told him he didn't know he hit me. He signed a report saying an unknown motorist told him he hit me (I saw someone walk up to his car & point to mine), but now he's denying it & saying the witness was me.

The police have not been helpful with trying to get the store surveillance video of the witness & are saying it's a civil matter. My insurance company is not fighting for me since we both have the same company and I believe this driver got preferential treatment because he was a cop. I'm going to end up having to pay my deductible myself even though I wasn't in the wrong.

If the police found my stolen vehicle, and I haven’t yet been paid out for my claim, but sent them my car keys and everything, will I still get paid out for the claim, or be stuck with the car?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 03:25 PM PST

My car was stolen on October 25th in Birmingham Al. I have Geico insurance. My car has $2000 still left to pay on a loan from a bank. I'm on the last step of the claim which is just getting the money for the lost vehicle. They are suppose to send the bank $2000 tomorrow and me the leftover. I have sent in the keys, signed everything they need to take over the title, but due to the holidays they have been dragging their feet with paying me for the claim. I'm suppose to call them tomorrow and make sure someone will be sending me the money because that's all I've been waiting on, but I just now got a call saying they found my car!! They gave me the address of where it's being towed tonight. I honestly do not want the car anymore and just want the money they said they are giving me for the claim. I feel like even though they found my car it's the insurance problem now because I sent them the only keys I have for it already! Am I screwed and just stuck with the car now? Or will the insurance still pay me out tomorrow like it was planned and it's there problem now?? I'm just looking for some relief because I can't google something this specific.

Entitled to Loss of Use? (California)

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 09:11 PM PST

I was involved in an accident where my car was totaled, and the other driver's insurance would not accept fault. I went through my own insurance, but do not have rental car coverage on my policy. Even though I was sure it was not my fault, since the other insurance was saying it was 70% my fault I did not want to risk renting a car and racking up a huge bill and then not get reimbursed by the other insurance. They also mentioned there's a limit issue with the other driver not having enough property damage coverage to fully cover the cost of my totaled car (2013 Honda Accord, about $15k, minimum property damage in CA is $5,000). My own insurance sent me a check for the cost of my car and pursued arbitration to prove I wasn't at fault, so they could collect the money through subrogation.

I've just found out that arbitration found the other party 100% at fault, and my insurance asked me for any property damage out of pocket expenses (such as rental car) for them to try and collect in subrogation. I did not rent a car, however California law says I am entitled to loss of use even if I did not actually rent a car. I mentioned this to my insurance adjuster and they said they only deal with expenses that I have already paid for and have a receipt for, and if I want to pursue loss of use to contact the other insurance company. Is this correct, considering I filed the claim through my own insurance? Is it even worth it since there's already a limits issue on property damage?

Side question: my dad told me to give my insurance a dollar number of what it would have cost me if I had rented a car, and if they asked for a receipt to write him a backdated check and send them a copy of the check. This didn't sound right to me...is that considered insurance fraud? Would they even accept that as proof if I had actually paid him to rent his car?

Do I need to go through home insurance for damages done by contractor while home repairs for something else?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 12:06 PM PST

I had a slab leak in December, and insurance covered it and wrote me a check to start the repairs. Walls and floors needed to go, so 2' of drywall were removed and LVP flooring, the click and lock kind, were also replaced through 1/3 of the house. I hired these contractors and they turned out to be complete garbage (feel free to check out my other thread), and in the process of repairing my home (not to mention redoing their "repairs" once I called them out on them), they damaged the LVP flooring that I reinstalled myself a couple of weeks ago.

Unfortunately, the damages are located on a couple of planks in a "middle" section of the floors. Since I've installed these LVPs several times already, I know that the two damaged planks cannot be removed unless the rows above or below them are removed first. Based on the layout, I think it makes most sense to start removing them from the office, which is about 100 sqft.

My question is: Do I need to get insurance involved again since the damages are associated to the claim, or is this is an issue with the shit contractors?

Rear ended by drunk driver. (My car was parked)

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 04:48 PM PST

Last night a drunk driver hit my neighbor's car, totaled it, my neighbor's car hit my 2017 Ford Explorer, significant damage. Both drunk driver's insurance and mine are State Farm.
My car will get fixed, but should I sue the drunk driver to get more money, because my car will depreciate in value BIG TIME. Or if I ask for a new one will they think I'm crazy? Lol.

how to file home insurance claim on damages that was not fixed the first time?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 08:15 PM PST

Long story short: my wife and I bought our house two years ago brand new. We are both first time home owners. The very first time my wife used the dishwasher, it leaked water all over the floor below and set off the fire alarm. That caused a big show down in the neighborhood. The insurance paid for the cause inspection and restoration. The plumber that did the inspection could not find any leak from the plumbing/pipes. He said leak was because my wife did not properly shut the dishwasher door.

The insurance gave us money to fix the damages. The biggest damages were on the hardwood floors. We decided since the house was brand new and the hardwood were not badly damaged, we could fix the floor down the road, say like 5-10 years. And my wife was like 6 months pregnant and we needed money. We used the money to fix the minor issues and used some of of the money to furnish our home and bought some baby stuff.

6 months later my wife decided to use the dishwasher again for the first time after the initial episode, and then what did see, it was leaking again. From the same spot, water leaking on lower floor. The lower floor got damaged and the main floor at which the dishwasher is also got damaged again. We called the insurance and reported the issue. The insurance came and when they saw it was at the same location they asked for proof of documents that shows that we fixed the previous damages. But since we didn't have proof that fix the hardwood floors, we let the damages stay that way since then.

The second time it happened, we hired another plumber and he came and ran several cycles on the dishwasher and there was not a single leak. Again he said the problem could be before we did not properly close the dishwasher door.

Today, my wife decided to use the dishwasher again. Everything seem to be fine but when I went downstairs, there, water was pouring again.. we only had few plate inside the dishwasher and the door was shut tight.

It is very frustrating going through this. This dishwasher is just straight up damaging our house. And I can't even begin to think about the 24 hours noise in the house from the mandatory water restoration for 3-4 day.

My question is, Could there be a different way I can report this issue to the insurance and have them take care of the damages? The first damage to the hardwood floor was not bad the first time but since then, this has happened again twice and the state of the hardwood floors are just not good at all. What should I do?

PS: pardon any bad grammar. English is not my first language

    External House inspection - why?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 02:02 PM PST

We have been with our home insurer for 6+ years. Suddenly this year we get a letter saying they are sending someone out to do a exterior inspection.

Someone does come out. They went around our house and took pictures.

We received a letter just a couple days ago saying the inspection was fine.

I'm just curious - why would a insurance company do this seemingly randomly? Is this a normal thing?

Clarification on short term disability benefit waiting period

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 07:28 PM PST

I have had employer STD coverage since last year and am due to give birth this February. I am curious to see if anyone here can shed light or has prior experience on how "pregnancy" is defined in the following paragraph :

Benefit Waiting Period • There is no waiting period if you have a non-work- related injury, benefits start on the first day of your disability. Your benefits will start on the 31st day if you become disabled due to illness or pregnancy.

Does pregnancy here mean any pregnancy-related complications such as being on bed rest or does it cover child birth as well?

I ask here because I've been getting the run around between my insurance provider and HR, each one having me contact the other. Provider did say it's typically 7 days for childbirth but my HR (ironically I work for the state in the medical benefits division) says pregnancy here would also mean childbirth and so I'd have to wait 30 days.

Thanks to anyone who could help!

My health insurance plan began July 1st, but BCBS reset my deductibles as of this morning (January 1).

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 07:28 PM PST

The company that I work for has open enrollment in June with the plan taking effect on July 1. When I signed up, I planned on getting a surgery, so I got the high deductible plan where 100% is covered once I meet the deductible. I doubled checked with our Benefits Director that the plan ran from July 1 to June 30. It was the first I heard of this type of plan and wanted to be certain.

I met the $2500 deductible in the fall. However, this morning I checked my BCBS account and it shows I've made no progress towards the deductible.

Anyone else have any experience with something like this?

    Insurance options during pregnancy

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 06:40 PM PST

My partner and I are planning on trying to have a baby soon. We have been together for a very long time but are not married. We both work but are very likely to be moving to a different state and getting new jobs. As counter intuitive as this sounds, we do not want to wait until we get new jobs. Also, there is a good chance she wont work once pregnant (or before she has the baby). My question is, if she quits her job (or we move and she is unemployed) after getting pregnant would she qualify for medicare or ACA insurance policys? And, if not, what options would we have? I feel like the best move would be to establish new jobs and get her on my insurance before we have a baby but that would delay our baby making plans for longer than we care too. Not sure how our marriage status plays a role in this either. I want to make sure my partner and our baby have sufficient coverage and we don't get blind sided by anything but our we will be moving and changing jobs during the pregnancy. Hope I don't sound too naive, just eager to start a family and concerned about healthcare.

Hit & Run Case, I am not at fault. what to do?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 01:56 PM PST

I was driving with my wife on the highway and this car hit me from behind on the driver's side, my bumper is broken but the car still drivable and luckily I was able to take control of the car and park on the side. The other car does not stop and ran away. I pulled over and called 911. they took my details and let OPP know. OPP took details and caught the car and driver. apparently other driver told that He had a panic attack and ran away and then contacted OPP. OPP officer asked for my details and send me another driver's details and asked me if I wanted to give my number to the driver. I said yes. the driver's parent contacted me regarding damages paying out without going to insurance.

Now here is my question, Today on New year's day, the collision reporting center is off, I will go there tomorrow. I don't want to ruin that person's new year ( Even though he did mine). Do I need to report to my insurance regarding this if they pay for the damages for the rear bumper and my car rental for probably 1-2 weeks? As my concern is, this is already reported to Police, do they report to the Insurance company? If I report to the collision center, Do I need to report to my insurance?

    Thanks in advance

Still confused by my wife's employee medical benefits on which I am a dependent. There's two medical providers and despite having worked in a congruent industry (brokerage), I'm not sure why that is. Her employer rhymes with Tomgast.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 05:04 PM PST

    So, here's the gist:

My wife works for a subsidiary of a giant company "Tomgast". If there are any current or former employees of "Tomgast" that can provide insight as to how this works, I'd be grateful.

Since I'm more of a numbers and finance guy, I tend to take care of everything involving money for our household. Currently, it's just me and my wife. No kids. No other dependents. At her open enrollment, I enrolled us in a PPO Pay Later program.

From the looks of it, there are two coverage providers, UMR and BCBS. The UMR is a Self Funded plan, so I'm guessing that means BCBS is Fully Insured? Is there a reason why both plans would be self funded? Is that why we have two coverage providers, or...

I just now noticed that, while I enrolled us both in the PPO Pay Later, UMR has us enrolled in their PPO Pay Now. The BCBS is confirmed Pay Later. Is that why there's two providers? Because both seem to be able to provide the Now or Later options. Also, does this mean I need to contact UMR to see why they have us under the Pay Now program when we enrolled in the Later? I think that might be the issue.

    TIA for any hep!

    Both plans benefit coverage.

Screwed my self and need help (car insurance)

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 02:46 PM PST

I bought an 2017 Audi R8 (same as Lamborghini hurrican) I mentioned this up front because it's hard enough to find insurance on an exotic car.

Rewind to November, I try to add it to my auto policy, which has an Escalade platinum and Range Rover sport SVr on it and am paying roughly $430/mo with 100/300 coverages and a $2500 deductible. Progressive tells me they don't insure an r8 because of value... me being cocky.. I get rowdy say fuck that and switch to liberty mutual... $800 to start policy I don't think anything of it.

December 25th, I get a letter saying they are canceling me on Jan 9th... why? Well apparently the speeding tickets from 2016 that I fought in court hit my MVR in 2018. (Had a modified Nissan GTR) and they put 11 points on my license... they expire in March... no sweat. Should fix itself

In the mean time though... I can't get anyone to insure any of the vehicles because of my MVR.

Also... my wife had a no at fault accident where someone ran her off the road in the r8

I'm in the state of GA so I'm pretty sure they suspend license with no coverage

    Need help/advice

    Speeding ticket and car insurance.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 08:23 AM PST

    This is in indiana.

Hello, so I recently got a speeding ticket in a car under my parents insurance. Therefore there are a bunch of cars on said plan, i was wondering as far as insurance goes what repercussions there will be against them and their insurance, if any for me just paying the ticket. They are saying i need to fight the ticket as it will skyrocket the insurance as a whole.

Now, i also am getting kicked off their insurance onto my own...but i had their insurance during the ticket if this is important. My car broke down and isnt worth the repairs so im getting a new one on my own insurance. I wonder if when i leave the insurance if the danger i am as a offense driver leaves too?

At fault party insurance rented me a car, no way to extend the rental

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 11:08 AM PST

I got hit. The at fault part's insurance (Hartford) and I figured out I would use their preferred body shop, and they rented me a car. Body shop got my car Monday, and I picked up my rental Monday too. (At Enterprise). Seems the Hartford only rented me a car for two days and it's due back today. Due to the holiday, the Hartford is closed, can't get them to extend. Body shop is likewise closed.

Is there anything that can be done?

How is replacement cost work for an older laptop?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 10:31 AM PST

    *How does

Hello, I have a question about how rental insurance determines what you get for claiming a laptop.

The situation us as follows: bought a laptop in 2014 for 1200$, it was on sale with the original price being 1500$. It is older but since it was such a beast back then it still keeps up with gaming (wow, starcraft 2 etc on medium settings) and photo editing large files.

Today it got doused in juice and I'm worried it might be totaled. I use it almost exclusively for everything and have to have it on travels.

My insurance has the replacement cost addition as well as an extra thing for computers, I honestly was more worried about it getting stolen as I normally take extreme care of my electronics (first time I've ever had something break due to my actions and not die out).

My question is: how would the company decide to deal with this claim? Would they give the amount I paid in 2014? Would they try to find a used or new one of the same model? I have read with other objects like a bike they might try to find a replacement with the same specs but a similar spec laptop would be drastically lower than I paid for originally and may not be worth the claim.

I am here because I am worried calling in to ask would flag me for having had an accident even if I dont make a claim, this might be overly cautious but maybe someone would know if that is just paranoia.

Appreciate any insight. I know it will raise my rates but I use my laptop too much to go without and can't afford the lump cost at the moment to get a modern day replacement.

OPTIONS: Need a reminder on all the ways to get full benefits in the US.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 09:40 AM PST

I'm 26M in Delaware. I should probably know this by now, but I have a dad that's unfortunately borderline crazy and shit scared all the time of me not being covered under health insurance.

I went through a serious surgery on my lungs back in 2010. After that experience, he doesn't trust living in the US is the dream anymore...

That aside, I wanna get away from my parents so I just need a reminder of all the ways to get health, dental, vision benefits in the worst case scenario if I were to be living in my own.

    1. Scenario 1: (If I were to get fired/quit my job) What I know: You can get medical/health
      benefits from

Healthcare.Gov Or buy it directly from health insurance companies I.e. Aetna, BCBS, etc.

    1. The only difference here would be you would
be paying the full price / monthly premium since I would no longer have an employer since I got fired/ or I quit, correct?

    2. Scenario 2: (I get layed off)

I can get unemployment benefits but does the company who layed me off required to give me full benefits until I get a new job?

    1. Is there any scenario where I can still get full benefits from the company that fired me or from the one I quit from while I look for a new job? I don't think so correct?

    So I guess that's it...

Healthcare.gov or buy it directly from the health insurance company for the full price...I would just have to be making enough money to pay for it all by myself.

    1. Same goes for dental and vision, correct?

    2. Or I can get a contract job, and get benefits from the contracting/consulting agency while converting to a full-time regular employee...?

    3. When you are self-employed/freelancer in the US, you have to pay the full price again by buying from the marketplace or directly from the insurance agencies ourselves correct?

    4. Like there is not a way to get a reduced price for medical, dental, vision since we work and make money for ourselves without working for anyone/ an employer correct?

    5. When we turn 65 years of age within the US, we can retire cuz we end up receiving monthly social security payments from the Gov't as well as full health benefits, dental, and vision from medicare correct? Does Medicare automatically kick in when we turn 65 years or I would imagine we would have to apply for Medicare and show proof correct?

    6. What about Medicaid or state offered health insurance? In order to qualify for this type of health insurance, you would have to be making less than 30k annually correct?

    7. Or if we have a disability or from a medical condition we can still get social security/disability payments from the Gov't and get Medicaid if we are younger than 65 years of age correct?

    These are all my questions.

    mycoverageinfo.com is causing havoc again

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 07:50 AM PST

Every year I receive at least two letters from Mr. Cooper telling me that my (very reliable) insurance agent has not sent them the certificates they need. I go to the website in the letter and enter the PIN and enter the loan number which is exactly the loan number I also show on my loan documents. Each time it tells me that the loan number is invalid. Funny they take payments on that loan and they sent missing insurance letters on that loan #. So then I try to phone instead of uploading the insurance policy. Same deal as others have described. No response. So then my insurance agent send out the proof of insurance again...twice because she has to do it for each letter or they write their own policies. This may not be a scam but it's certainly an unprofessional way to do business.
