How do some small business owners get so wealthy?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 08:39 PM PST

It's been on my mind how some of the owners in our plaza are apparently very wealthy.

Their stores aren't huge businesses yet some are very successful and I don't understand how. Like the owner of a laundromat somehow makes enough to own a $400K+ car? The store is busy but, its still a small business in a city population of under 1 million. The other owner who leases an auto body shop seperate from the plaza lives in a multi million dollar home. How could he possibly make that much from a small auto body shop?

What are these people doing differently that is making them so much more than other small business owners around here?

Any indoor playground owners in this sub?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 03:08 PM PST

I'm doing market analysis and research right now on opening an indoor playground. Other than a little one at a McDonalds, there's nothing to do in my area for folks with little kids within an hour to 90 minute drive. No Chuckie Cheese, no bounce house, no laser tag, nothing. One bowling alley, but most toddlers and young kids get bored at a bowling alley quickly from my experience.

The nearest indoor playground is over 60 miles away. The area I'm in only has a population of about 50k, but there's literally nothing to do with little kids in this area in the winter (which is most of the year where I'm at). I think an indoor play area would be a goldmine, and my research so far supports this, even though my community size is on the smaller side of an ideal market.

I'd love to talk to an owner/operator of an indoor playground (owner-owned or franchise) and learn more about the business from someone who is already in this market. If anyone on this sub is in this business or could connect me to someone who is, I would be incredibly grateful! Thanks!

    Fake Google Reviews

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 07:19 AM PST

Isn't it incredible when your mediocre competitors receive 150 5-star Google reviews in 30 days?

Without fail the reviews come from accounts with 1 total review and they make a point to specifically mention the name of an employee, to show just how genuine they are. This seems to bump the business up the Google maps rankings.

I just keep telling myself that Google is smart enough to figure this out and will adjust algorithms accordingly? Anyone with any knowledge of this?

Questions for hiring a virtual (and later personal) assistant. Has anyone done it? Did it benefit you? Any tips?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 04:54 PM PST

    Hey all,

My small business is growing and I'm considering hiring an assistant.

I was discussing it with a friend and he introduced me to the concept of virtual assistants. I did some research on Upwork and I realised that virtual assistants are quite popular.

The things that I want a personal assistant to do are:

    • Data curation
    • Setting up emails
    • Finding presents for clients / friends&family birthdays
    • Research
    • Reports

    My questions are:

    • What is your experience with hiring a virtual assistant?
    • Did it really help you grow your business?
    • Should I hire full-time or part-time?
    • How much should they get paid?
    • What should I be careful about?
    • What are some other things you let your assistants do for you?
    • Have you made any mistakes hiring assistants?

I'm looking forward to your comments!

I suck at marketing. I'm great at software engineering and graphic design. Can I realistically find someone social who can talk to people for me?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 01:32 AM PST

Indications of my talent: Multiple competition rewards, great university degrees, great portfolios, also highly profitable projects where I handled back-end, front-end and online marketing efforts.

But talking to people isn't my strong suit. It makes me anxious.

Can I realistically find someone social who can talk to people for me? Would be great to find someone to partner per project. Any suggestions on how to find this person?

PS. I had a corporate partner in the past and I swore to never do that again. So I'm thinking partnering for projects and splitting earnings.

Do you have problems about packing and shipping?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 12:50 AM PST

I sell pillows, they are big, my supplier squash them, almost vacuum them, but I don't like the idea, because the pillows inside the packages look terrible when consumers receive them, and it's hard for them to return to fluffy state. What should I do? Custom packaging? Any Thoughts?

How to find a reputable SEO company who will cover all the bases (site, links, content, social)?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 10:22 AM PST

Goes without saying, Google can make or break a business.

A couple years ago we hired an SEO company who optimized our site and created original content for our site/blog/social.

We paid them $1500/mo. After the initial optimization they provided 10 brief original content articles a month.

Within 6 months they were able to bring us to the top 3 organic (local) results. I was pleased.

Then the company began some questionable tactics such as creating fake "industry sites" and putting our articles on these sites. The content they provided started to suffer. Lastly, I realized they were also helping their own SEO by putting in keywords and their business name into our content.

I decided to part ways with them. 2 years later, as expected, we're starting to slip in the rankings.

I want to hire a new company but the industry is rife with scammers, beginners, and price gougers. Can anyone recommend an SEO company you've had good results with and is reasonable in price (~$1000/mo)?

Feel free to PM me if you would rather not reply. Thanks.

I basically want them to be able to pay easily for initial setup fee and monthly maintenance fee using their credit cards

    Trademark business name question

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 06:37 PM PST

Hello everyone. I have a service business on the East coast and registered it in 2016. Recently I have been looking into branding and I want to trade mark my business name as we grow and plan on franchising. Here is my situation:

I'm in a state on east coast. Let's say for example my business name is " electric force" but I googled "electric force" and " California electric force" comes up and has been in business for about 10 years already.

Can I still trade mark my business name and be able to use it? Theirs is not trademarked and it is not in the United States data base for trademarks. Thank you.

Do you have a vlog, podcast, blog, or stream?Does it help with your biz, and any pros/cons?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 05:16 PM PST

I'm a sculptor (1"-5" fantastical figures) and have considered doing an art stream/vlog, or just a general 'I talk about random shit' vlog type of thing to make more of a connection with people (and ultimately drive business to my sculpture hopefully).

I enjoy rambling about lots of topics, and apparently my rambles are rather interesting sometimes according to people I know. shrugs who knew? Sounds like something fun to try, although I'm a bit nervous.

Any tips are appreciated, thanks! ==

    Triple checking?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 04:03 PM PST

Before setting something in stone, like a standard operating procedure (training documentation, or solving a issue and everything else that's written down in a business) what is the process to make sure 99% chance of getting it done well.

to analyze the situation, get the data, find the problem, draw up 1-5 solutions, pick one, execute. Final step would be to refine it and figure out if it needs to be changed or tweaked. Report back to see its progress. In general if I do something like this on EVERYTHING is this one of the keys to getting a really consistent outcome? A ton of checks and balances, and formulating a solution.

Helping a friend create a seed company.

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 03:47 PM PST

So i started following this guy on Instagram and offered to help him create a online store. I'm making good process but how should we handle credit card payments. Right now I'm looking into processors that will even accept us. Does he need to start a LLC or can he handle everything as a sole proprietor? We are using woocommerce and i currently have a coinbase account setup for him. Guessing he will have to file income taxes on the cryptocurrency income as well?

Any thing i should look into that i might be missing?

    https://masonicseeds.co/ is our site

edit:by seed i mean cannabis seeds.

I am now filing for a FBN (DBA) and have been using the name for a year already

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 03:36 PM PST

Hello, I am just now filing for a DBA in California but have been using the name for about a year already. I want to tell the truth on the paperwork I am mailing in to the County but am wondering if I will get in any sort of trouble?

I read online somewhere that you are supposed to file for a DBA within 40 days of using the name. The form also says I could face upwards of $1,000 of fines if I knowingly lie on the form and do not want to lie on the form.

What should I do? What kind of fine or punishment will I receive if I tell the truth on the form?

    Thanks for any help!

What's the value of an informed, automatic decision?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 07:18 AM PST

For example -- maybe I know a great website host that costs $20/month. There's no true barrier stopping my client from going and signing up for that service themselves. However, I already know that if we need that service, I would be able to confidently go straight to that website host.

And I just realized that I should be assigning value to that in my price calculations.

When you're planning your prices, do you calculate a value for those decisions? I have some ideas, but I'd like to know: how do you do that?

Would trying to open a small "mom and pop" style pet store in 2020 be a guaranteed bankruptcy?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 01:10 PM PST

It was all over the news this last decade about how the massive chain pet stores either buy out or bankrupt any nearby pet stores owned by individuals instead of large companies. I was looking to apply as a manager to the local PetSmart but I realized I would probably butt heads with corporate for every effort I wanted to make so all the animals stayed happy and healthy in my store, hence the idea of opening up my own.

I just really fear falling into bankruptcy because the local chain petstore has lower prices on crickets (that would probably carry parasites), or because I need to mark up decor and lightbulbs to still make acceptable profit margins. I am only 19, and it is my long term goal to work with animals (specifically reptiles) without needing additional schooling, this may be a good option if it is viable.

    How do I track sales commission of my employees? {software needed}

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 11:55 AM PST

I have a digital product I'm about to start offering to businesses. I want to hire my cousin to help generate sales. I'm going to offer her a commission-only type deal. The product is $1,000 and I'm going to offer her $200 commission if she sells it.

I'm giving the customer two payment choices:

    1. Product is $1000 if paid in full.
    2. Product is $120/mo. for 12months if paid monthly. (subscription-based)

She will receive $200 for either of those choices above.

Question: Can you give me a list of popular commission tracking software?

    • Something that integrates with HubSpot.
    • Something that has a front end where my cousin can see what she will be getting each month and when a new entry is made.
    • Something that will calculate the proper payout per month if the customer chooses to pay monthly, so 200/12= $16.66 commission payout per month once the customer pays the $120 bill.

Ideally, I want a piece of software (or 2) that will allow me to integrate into Hubspot and set up reoccurring payments where it automatically takes from the customer's CC each month and then sends the "customer paid" information to some commission tracking software where I then can pay out my employees accordingly.
