Do I need additional home insurance when running a home-based business? (Oklahoma)

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 01:07 PM PST

I'm running a business out of my home that's so far only involved me sitting in front of a computer. I'm about to make some changes that I feel could require re-examining my insurance. I'm wondering:

    1. In general, does one need to let their insurer know or have additional insurance coverage for a home-based business?

    2. Do I need additional home insurance for my particular home-based business? Possibly relevant information:

    • I'm the only employee.

    • I'm purchasing a laser cutting machine that's meant for home use, but does pose some additional fire hazard if not used correctly. I'll be installing it in my home office. It's a system that's used often by hobbyists as well as businesses, but I'm not sure whether my business use will change things insurance-wise.

    • I'll be storing inventory at the house, but the value of the stored inventory at any given time won't be worth insuring.

    • I'll be sending out and receiving shipments via UPS, USPS, etc.

    • No customers, contractors, or other employees will ever be at the house.

    • I live on acreage outside of city limits so neighbors, zoning, etc. isn't an issue.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Illinois auto hail damage

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 03:30 AM PST

I am getting something else repaired on my car at an auto body shop right now and was considering getting some hail damage from April repaired at the same time. Does a hail claim make my rate go up?

Total loss - not buying next car for few months, cancel insurance?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 02:38 AM PST

My car was declared total loss (my fault). I do not plan to purchase a new car for around 2-3 months. I have a motorcycle currently (had it for a while) that I plan to use. Should I cancel my car insurance for a few months and try to get it again when I buy my next car or keep it until then to avoid a break (and rates going up because of at-fault accident)? Term ends in November and I expect the rates to go up then anyway since I was in an accident.

    Car Insurance Question (California)

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 10:40 PM PST

I've read some articles online but I coudln't find one that answered my particular question. I haven't gotten into any accidents and I'm a fairly solid and safe drive but I'm just thinking about the worst case scenario.

If I was to drive my friend's car and get into an accident, would my insurance increase? (I'm assuiming it probably would but I'm a college student who doesn't really know anything about real life yet)

From the articles I read, my understanding is that if I was to drive my friend's vehicle and get into an accident, their insurance would be responsible in covering the costs and increase since they gave me permission to drive the car. I feel as though something would have to happen to my insurance as well since I was the drive, but the articles I read never gave an answer as to whether or not my car insurance increases as well if I was the driver so I'm still a bit confused about that part. Thanks in advance.

    Claim issue (Florida)

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 10:55 PM PST

I had an accident early December last year. It's the first at fault accident I've had, after being a customer with a major insurance company for 4 years, since buying a new car. It was raining and someone slammed on the breaks in front of me, downhill. Instead of hitting them I veered off on the curb and crashed into a street sign.I was at a safe following distance ext, I'm contesting the ticket for failure to use due care In traffic court. The other driver after abruptly breaking ran a red light and left the accident scene. I was ticketed.after 30 days my insurance adjuster called me and said my car was finished. I called the shop and they said there was some tick or knock and they brought the car by the dealership to diagnose it. It's been 7 days and I haven't got a definite answer on how long the unexpected repair will take. I've spoke to 4-5 different people, supervisors ext at the insurance company. I feel it's ridiculous to be dealing with this after 5 weeks. They refused to pay for the rental car after 30 days And I've has to pay out of pocket for it for the last week. Is this normal? Is there no contingency for situations like this? Am I expected to pay $900 a month for a rental car or have no transportation while they dick around with my car? I haven't received even a phone call from either the shop or my adjuster in 4 days. I can't afford this and I have a 3 year old with special needs I need to have transportation for. Any advice on how I should proceed with this or am I just "sol"?

    Damage Amount in Fender Bender

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 04:14 PM PST

Last month I got in a minor fender bender in the parking garage at my workplace for which I was at fault. It was extremely low speed with minimal damage -- no damage to my car, but a small scratch on the driver's side door. I submitted the claim to my insurance and have gotten back a letter saying that I was "found at-fault in an accident with damages over $10,000." I don't know much about cars or the cost of repairs, but it seems like a lot. Is that normal insurance speak, or is it possible that the other driver is trying to claim damages above and beyond what actually happened? It happened right in front of my building's security officer, who came over and documented everything and took pictures, so I have a neutral witness.

    US: Insurance cards being stolen?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 08:55 PM PST

Can someone steal my medical/ dental or vision insurance cards and use them to change doctors and pretend to be me and seek care and send the bill to my address?

Sorry but this just crossed my mind, and with identity theft these days...I have to ask.

Cuz when u get your identity stolen, they go after your bank accounts, then start opening loans with your names perhaps, then etc.

I was just wondering...what's to stop them from walking into an doctors or specialist office, signing up with my address, and then telling me to bill my insurance, then I end up getting the bill to my home address...this can happen right?

California Property & Casualty Exam... anyone know the answer to the question about the (homeless?) friend who occupies the car and the coverage?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 08:40 AM PST

I wish I could remember it word for word and I've seen it twice on the exam now but never in my workbooks or the prelicense training exam hall. I'm tempted to say it's one of the ten "experimental questions" that we don't get graded on, but maybe I just haven't run into it yet online.

Anyway... the question is something like...

You have a neighbor or a friend who occupies your automobile. They use the word occupy, which in my mind reads as this person sleeps in the vehicle and occupies it as a dwelling. I feel like there was more wording that implied it was being used as a dwelling.

The question was asking something like... either if the friend is covered under your Personal Auto Policy or if the car was covered...

Does anyone remember this question better than me and know the most likely answer? I remember I struggled with this one both times because I feel like I read in the textbook that when a vehicle is being "occupied" (as in, dwelled in) it suddenly stops being counted as a Personal Auto? Unless I've read that wrong?

Thank you for any and all help/advice!

Do you receive RCV if repair is less than ACV on Homeowner’s Insurance claim?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 08:35 PM PST

We recently had a flood that impacted 3 floors of our home due to a water line that broke when we were away from the house. We've had the water mitigation company out and are slowly wading through how to go about our repairs. Our insurance adjuster has sent us our estimate for structure repairs and a check for the ACV portion of the estimate. (Though we are still discussing some items that were missed in the estimate and a couple undervalued items.) They are holding the depreciation back until the work is completed. For clarity sake, this question has nothing to do with the contents portion of the claim.

My question is how exactly does RCV work? Do we need to prove that we've paid at least the ACV for our repairs? Since we already have to do some construction to make the repairs, we figure that we should look at making some changes and upgrades that we probably wouldn't have otherwise.

Now I know insurance will pay like for like. If we upgrade, then any excess is our responsibility. As is any work that falls outside of the scope of the insurance estimate. Perfectly fine.

But what if we chose a less expensive option when we rebuild? For instance, we have hardwood flooring that needs to be replaced. We are thinking about replacing the hardwoods with luxury vinyl, which is less expensive. Say insurance valued the hardwoods at $5,000 RCV with $1,500 depreciation held back until we prove we've completed the work—so we get $3,500 towards the floor before work starts. What if then we chose to do a luxury vinyl and install it ourselves for say half the cost ($2,500), would we be able to get the $1,500 depreciation to put towards something else if we spent less than the estimated ACV? Do we need to show receipts to prove how much we paid? I thought the adjuster said we could send photos or do an inspection of the work as proof, but I had someone else tell me "no, no inspection, that if you spend less than the ACV you won't get the depreciation." If that is true then I guess I'm wondering why we bother trying to save money doing some things ourselves if it means we don't get the depreciation. But then I also had some one else tell me that "no we don't have to tell/prove to insurance how much we actually paid as long as we aren't asking for money over their RCV estimate."

What's the truth? How does this work? I'm honestly not trying to milk the insurance company for all it's worth and walk away with a ton of extra money. I really just want to maximize the value of what we are getting and make it go as far as we can.

Car insurance ridiculously high even though I have a clean record

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 08:07 PM PST

I am an 19 year old college student with insurance through progressive. I drive a 2011 Kia Soul, I pay all of my payments on time and in full, I've never gotten pulled over, I've never gotten in an accident, and I'm on the honor list in my college. I am the only one on my policy but every month my payment is well over $300. My last one being $307.86. I've tried reaching out and talking but all I get is run-around. Is there any reason as to why it's so high? Is there anything I could do to lower it or should I cut my losses and switch?

Ny state mistake lead to my 5 month pregnant wife having no insurance and not able to see her doctor

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 07:44 PM PST

She had insurance through the marketplace and was told to update her insurance when she got pregnant and it lead to neither of us being covered. As well, Blue Cross stopped covering her doctor. We had the form filled out and sent in for authorization from blue cross and were denied for not having insurance. Now my state is telling we have to wait till she is covered again and that "the department that can fix it, has labeled the matter urgent" They are assuring us it will be fixed but could not offer a timeline. My 5 month pregnant wife is scared and stressed out. I'm not really sure what to do.

Property Insurance and Acts of War

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 07:42 PM PST

With the recent news events, I read a comment that made me wonder about insurance. Are large commercial properties in the United States, specifically Trump properties, typically covered by acts of war? I imagine they would make obvious targets for adversary retaliation.

I'm also curious if Acts of War are different than Acts of Terrorism.

    Life insurance advice

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 06:54 PM PST

    Hello you guys.

I'm going to try my best to make this short. I am one of the 4 children my mother has given birth to and out of all of them I'm the only one sticking by her side, helping her, taking care of her. My mother is the only family member I have left (I don't associate myself with my siblings) and my manager told me because of my predicament I should look into getting her (my mother) life insurance that way, when the time comes, I'll have funds for burial/cremation as well as possible left over money for myself that could go towards other necessities.

I do live in the USA if that's relevant but could anyone suggest life insurance plans/companies I should seek out and get in contact with? I'm still new to the idea of insurance. As of this moment the only insurance I have right now is dental (couldn't afford health)

    thank you in advance :)

Traveler medical insurance while moving to Canada? - Will have no primary insurance and will be participating in "snow sports"

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 05:50 PM PST

Hello! I'm looking for some recommendations, input, or experiences from other members on the forum that have purchased or used travelers medical insurance while abroad.

My wife and I are moving from Anchorage (USA) to Kelowna (British Columbia) in February. It will be 3 months before we're eligible for the Canadian provincial medical services plan. Over that time period, I need to get a private medical policy that will cover us. There's plenty of plans available for this, however my concerns are:

    - We will both be downhill skiing during this time period. It's the Canadian rockies, for gods sake.

    - Traveler medical insurance policies are normally based around the assumption that you're returning to your home country at the end of your trip, and that you have a permanent address there. We will be leaving our permanent address in the US and living + working in Canada at the end of the policy period, though we'll still be US citizens.

    - It seems that typically travelers insurance covers acute issues, IE, if I tear my ACL skiing they will take care of the ER bill, but it's assumed that the actual surgery will be covered by my normal insurance upon return to my home country. I need a plan that is all-inclusive, and covers the whole cost of surgery.

Though there appear to be plans on paper that support this situation, I'm quite worried about the fact that we wont be able to claim a permanent address in the US, and medical insurance companies seem to be experts at burying loopholes for themselves in the fine print...

When should I give up and settle for a job I don't want?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 08:48 AM PST

Hi everyone 22M college graduate here trying to break into the insurance world. I have internship experience, slight work experience, a business degree and a solid resume. I have been taking a different approach to the job search than my peers and have not been rapid firing my resume out to every company just for the sake of getting a job. Instead I have selected insurance companies that I see a future with and apply for open positions online. I have applied for multiple positions with different companies and have had zero response from any of them. I have tried reaching out to recruiters for these companies via Linkedln, but they don't respond. I have been at this for a few months now and its getting to the point where I don't know what to do. I am really interested in a career in insurance underwriting, benefits or claims, but it does not seem like I am able to break into this industry. Should I keep on trying to push for a job in insurance or should I give up and settle for a sales/ recruiting job? I really don't want to work a sales/ recruiting job, but it seems like these are the only jobs available for new grads. I am not pressed for money, but I am eager to start working.

    Injury claim time

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 05:24 PM PST

In 2014 I was in a vehicle accident where I was rear ended by another car. At the time my insurance sent me to a chiropractor until the pain was resolved. I was also given a check for pain/suffering. Now I am having neck pain, my personal physician who knows nothing of the accident diagnosed me with 2, maybe 3 bulging disks, and said that it looks like something that would be caused by a traffic accident. Should I say something to my car insurance, or is it too late? (BTW I live in California and have not had any other trauma that would cause the further neck injury)

Strategies to insure multiple personal vehicles with only 2 drivers in the household?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 04:54 PM PST

I have a vehicle addiction. I don't own "classic" cars, but right now there are 7 of them. All run/drive. The newest is 2003, the oldest 1986.

I've been playing the suspend / reinstate coverage game for a few years now since I only drive 3 seasonally. One vehicle in the fleet sits uninsured as it's being "fixed up" for our soon-to-be 3rd driver. The remaining 3 are insured year round.

Is there an easier, more cost effective way to manage insuring a personal fleet like I have without the suspend / reinstate headache? My current agent doesn't seem to interested in stated value or agreed value policies. Seems like the companies that write those policies only do so on the garage queen classics.

    Paying back insurance company

I received a settlement from the other at fault insurance company. Just wondering how long does it normally take to receive the bills from my own insurance company?

    Auto insurance resources request

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 02:11 PM PST

Hello all, I understand that by law each motorist must carry insurance and that policy is a contract. I was rear ended and as per the Texas Department of Insurance I reached out to the other drivers insurance company. Am I bound by that contracted insurance policy? Does my own policy supersede the other drivers if I choose to file a claim against my own policy? Where are my legal rights documented?

More to the point is the following line on the TDI webpage https://www.tdi.texas.gov/takefive/accident-caused-by-other-driver.html

" The other driver's company may ask you to get an estimate for the cost of the repair, or they may send out their own adjuster"

I have an estimate of repair but the other insurance company is stating they MUST inspect the car themselves and will take weeks to get it done.

I would like to know my rights according to the law not someone who may not have my best interest in mind.

    Thanks.

Post-accident car inspection? money if I skip the doctor? claim negotiation with unknown data...

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:12 PM PST

This is my first accident in 30 years of driving. Thank you in advance for your patience and help with my naive questions about the claims process. The other driver's insurance has accepted 100% liability. I filed the claim directly with them (AAA).

    1. They sent me to a "collision center" for "inspection". They took photos of the bumper, which is the only visually apparent damage, and noted the mileage, nothing more that I'm aware of. I assumed that the "inspection" would evaluate the parts of the car affected that are not immediately apparent: frame, brakes, tires. Were my expectations too high? Is the inspection I expected unnecessary or did it not happen because this inspector is paid to find as few problems as possible? Should I find and pay for another inspection myself, and if so, is "inspection" the right term and how do I select a "good" inspector?
    2. When I called to start the claim, I was asked if I'd seen a doctor and I had not yet (appt was scheduled the next day or so). "If you decide you don't need medical care, I can go ahead and offer you a small compensation for your pain and suffering". I wasn't expecting it all, but I guess all this really is just about money on their side. Of course it is, and that's not wrong, but I wasn't prepared. I am injured in a way that has reactivated a previous injury. I am in the diagnostic phase and there will be therapeutic treatment, probably nothing more. I won't know the actual cost for awhile.
    3. All I need is my repaired and "certified safe" car, compensation for medical expenses, and payment for my time handling all this, but since they mentioned it, yes, I would like to be compensated for my pain too--it's not big, but it's also not zero. Was I was supposed to have estimated all these costs before starting the claim? or was the pre-emptive offer a lowball to clear the case? I'd be happy to take a check and handle everything myself. I also have the cash and health insurance to set things right myself and wait around to be reimbursed. I understand that I have 3 years to file, so I could just make a spreadsheet and keep the receipts and submit it all then, when I'm healed. But then there could be an argument about whether I spent too much and who wants that headache? Is this situation why there are personal injury lawyer billboards every five feet--so someone else does the negotiating on my behalf? I suppose this is the essential quandary of insurance: how do I know which path to take? I haven't been able to find a flow chart to guide me. So, /Insurance/ will you lend me your wisdom for my situation? I'd be so grateful.

Threequestions about progressive snapshot device for vehicle.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:08 PM PST

I just paid for progressive vehicle insurance with snapshot but haven't plugged the device in yet.

    1. Some people say the device damages the car electricity way. Does anyone have the issues?

    2. What happens if I just keep the device but not plug it in?

    3. Has anyone actually got the discount after using the device for 6 months?

    Thank you!
