Posted: 02 Jan 2020 06:27 PM PST I took over the bookkeeping for a client about 6 months ago. When my predecessor was supposed to train me on some operational stuff and familiarize me with vendors, he was really defensive also possessive of records. He resumed to provide me access to the accounting system, until I had the owner request he do so. Within two two, my predecessor quit after I found discrepancies in his work, though he was supposed to provide training for 45 days prior to his departure. Long story short, I ended up finding that he charged personal charges to the company card for a few years, and the accounting system electronic audit record showed how he tried to make fake notes of what items were and classify them incorrectly to cover his wrongdoing. I found a number of issues and brought them to the owners attention, who was very appreciative, and was able to re-gain some of the loss. Now, the owner has moments where he doesn't trust any employee, even though it is six months out. He can't get over what happened from my predecessor. Wondering if anyone has any advice on this. I just graduated with a bachelors in accounting two weeks ago and this is my first accounting job. They brought me in, showed me my computer, logged me in and she pulls out a huge file and says "so we're gonna have you start with doing the books for them, the company file is in Quickbooks '12." I was expecting to be trained, maybe sit with someone as they ran through one or something, but just thrown in? Is that normal? Am I a moron that should already know how to do this? The person I interviewed with said that I would be emailed the offer with information such as the start date, salary, etc. It's January 2nd and I haven't received it yet. Should I email them back about it or would I seem unprofessional? I personally think it wouldn't be professional and I should wait and if they don't respond then oh well, but a few of my friends said I should email them. Thank you for anyone who helps. Posted: 02 Jan 2020 04:37 PM PST So I started my internship today and so far so great except for one thing... I was placed into the Health Care group (this is the one group I did not want to be in). This internship is special because it allows me to do tax and audit, which gives great experience and flexibility. My issue with the health care group is that I smoke and I know that there is chance to be drug tested by the client before starting the engagement. While I haven't been assigned to any clients or asked to take a drug test, I know the chances of having to take one is high. Our employee handbook mentions drug testing and says that if we choose to withdraw ourselves from an engagement bc of a DT, we will not be professionally penalized (smells like BS but who knows). Any advice on how to approach a manager/partner and ask to switch if/when the issue arises? (I know I should've stopped smoking a long time ago, and while it's been about 2 weeks since I smoked, I know it is still in my system). [link] [comments] | ||

I'm salaried so I'm not getting paid more, which is fine. On one side, I'm thinking I should always book exactly how much I work. On the other side, would they care that I'm putting in too many billable hours on the client? I feel like many co-workers work more than 40 hours so I wouldn't want to enter exactly 40 hours and not seem like a hardworker, but I also don't know what is considered excessive. Posted: 02 Jan 2020 05:32 PM PST So, I know that SOX-related Internal Audit is supposed to be a boring hellscape, but I've looked into more operational IA roles, and with certain caveats it doesn't seem that bad. Here's my reasoning, would like to get your takes on it:

What do you guys think? I always thought I'd try my best to get a sexy external exit opp (FDD then FP&A, or maybe just FP&A immediately). But, it looks like it'll be hard to get such a role. I'm starting my 2nd busy season next week. I have zero fucking intention of doing a busy season as a Senior. Unfortunately, that seems like it'll heavily diminishing my chances of landing a role in FDD or FP&A. And as I said above, Operational IA might not be that bad, considering that I don't think I'm someone who'll ever be passionate about work. Great W/L balance, solid pay, opportunity for intl travel (but not too much), and not quite as boring as SOX IA. Is my reasoning correct? Or should I not settle and try for a job considered more interesting when I exit public after this busy season and give actually caring about my work another shot?
