Have a question about the CMA certification? Ask Me Anything!

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 06:26 AM PST

    Hi r/Accounting,

I'm Dennis Whitney, senior VP of certifications, exams, and content integration at IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants). I oversee the CMA® (Certified Management Accountant) program, which is IMA's flagship certification for accountants and financial professionals in business.

I'm here to answer questions about the CMA certification, including what's on the exam, the process to earn the credential, the role of management accountants, and more. I'd be more than happy to share what the CMA experience involves.

I'll start answering questions at noon EST.

Looking forward to answering your questions!

I keep having dreams about punching numbers into my 10key but then in reality I’m snoozing my alarms and only giving myself 15 min to get ready. I’ve also gotten less attractive since Jan 1.

Anyone else dream about accounting while studying FAR?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 06:48 PM PST

I swear to god after an entire day of studying, I'll be dreaming about accounting concepts during my sleep. I'll also start sleep-talking random nonsense like "expense account" or "deduction".

I'm not even in college yet but sooner or later I'll be rethinking my career choice if all this pessimism drags on.

    Advice to intern/A1 auditors

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 02:27 PM PST

Read last years report before you do anything on a job you get assigned. This is the finished product. This will answer 75% percent of the questions that you have about why you are doing something.

    Accounting Analyst vs Staff Accountant?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 08:08 PM PST

My title is accounting analyst and have 4 years of experience in industry. I do a lot of tasks at my job like bank recon, collections, accruals, commission for brokers, and supervise one associate. Am I doing staff accountant work or lower?

What's the difference between accounting analyst and staff accountant? Thanks!

    Stress and mentor

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 04:15 PM PST

My work mentor noticed I'm stressed and I stay late trying to get all my work done. He told me I need to go home on time. Thing is, a fairy is not going to do my work for me. I am daily scolded or teased by various people for staying late but I don't see any other option for getting my shit done. It is truly a matter of training. If I knew how to do my job, it wouldn't take me so long. My mentor is also my trainer but doesn't have time to help me every time I need it. I never complain about staying but it is well known around the office that I do. I think it should be very clear that I don't have any idea what I'm doing but no one is willing to stick their neck out for me. This job was advertised as "easy" but that is BS. Sure I need more training but I'm not stupid

    I can't find a job

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 08:07 AM PST

I graduated in December with my 150 and I can't find a job. I do live in a rural area, no firms except small ones that never seem to hire closer then an hour and a half away. I was keeping up hope until an hour ago. I had an interview for a part time $13 an hour thing here in my tiny town yesterday. Just basic bookkeeping and bank recs. There was only one other applicant and they just called and told me they went with the other applicant. That was soul crushing. If I can't beat out one other person for a part time no degree needed job I feel I'm doomed (and I thought the interview went well, really thought I had that one). I'm 30 with 2 kids and a husband, up and moving isn't an option. The amount of work, sacrafice, anxiety, time, and tears for 6 years of school on top of the student loan debt makes me nauseous. I know I will find something eventually but I'm feeling SO defeated right now, and like I made the ultimate mistake going to college for accounting, or college in general. I probably should have went for nursing or something 😭

Thanks for letting me rant, today is a low day for me.

Edited to add: everyone wants experience and I'm just trying to get my foot in the door somewhere to gain some experience! I can't even find an unpaid internship.

    Moving into Accounting Career

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 07:18 PM PST

    Hello,

Hoping to get a little bit of advice from the community, I am considering moving career into accounting and am unsure of the path I need/could to take. I have my Bachelors in Business Administration with a Major in Management and spent the first 8 years of my career working in Operations managing trade work for companies like Sodexo and Aramark, and then spent the past 3-4 years as a Distributor Sales Rep. So, with that being said I am trying to formulate plan on to how to make this happen. I know that I will need to go back to school but I am not sure what the best option would be? Getting a 2nd Bachelors? or shooting for a MAcc program? Or would it matter as long as I made it to my 150 hours to sit for the CPA (Currently in Texas). Id also like to move my current job into in a direction that would benefit me in the future, is there a entry level area that I could shoot for that would result in relevant experience? I really appreciate any contributions!
