[US] Low GPA Accounting Grad-My Experience

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 05:51 PM PST

Hi, I graduated this winter 12/19 with a 2.85 and just wanted to share my experience as I see people ask about it sometimes.

For many reasons, I didn't do as well in school as I really should've. I slacked off alot, didn't study as much as I probably could've and had to deal with other personal issues while going to college. As such I had a hard time during recruiting season. Not a single Big4 offered me an interview, but with a 2.85 that was semi expected. Instead I interviewed with many local firms and mid tiers, with some success.

But, it wasn't till December that I managed to get lucky. Over this last semester I had sent out 60-80 applications to varying levels of success (never got past a second interview) until December, where I interviewed with an industry company, and next thing I know they hired me on at 52k, which is about 4k below Big4 starts in my area.

I wanted to share with ya'lll cause for much of college I felt discouraged by my GPA and was really worried that I had wasted four years on nothing, and it wouldn't be worth it in the end. Despite everything though even I managed to find a job and I hope all of you do too if you're looking!

Am I in a bad internship?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 08:08 PM PST

I'm still in school, and will have my BS in Accounting in February 2021.

I was working at a apartment complex in leasing (absolutely no accounting experience but a good gig) when a local car dealership reaches out to me via an online job hunting app about an "accounting manager trainee" program. I went to the interview and it sounds awesome- full time, they'll teach me accounting, pay is good, etc. So I give notice and start my "internship".

Now, this is my first accounting job ever, so I'm not sure what to expect, but something about this place just seems way off. It's a small office and they love to gossip- it's kinda toxic, but I've had worse work environments. The thing that concerns me is that I don't think I'm doing enough accounting. We do bank reconciliations and journal entries, but that's honestly about it. The rest is car inventory and stuff related specifically to the dealership.

So, it's a bad environment full of weird, nosy coworkers, I'm really not getting accounting training and I feel like they lied to me about the "internship". There's literally no training procedures- I've been writing down everything myself because we have pretty much no guidance.

Should I look for something else or stick it out until I get my degree? The pay is decent, but I'm worried that I'm just wasting my time learning a bunch of stuff I have no need to know.

    Internship has turned sour

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 03:30 PM PST

In July 2018 I was hired as a corporate accounting intern at a large private corporation. I am now entering my final semester of college and after about a year of being told I "might get a job offer" I still have heard nothing. I was told that the company cannot hire me until after I graduate with my bachelors but I'm not sure if I belive that or not.

Everything was good in the beginning of the internship. I was given lots of responsibilities and learning new skills. As of now, I barely see my boss let alone recieve any training. Not only that but some of my responsibilies have been delgated to a new senior employee.

I am constantly running out of things to do and there has been countless days that I have done nothing but study or try to find things to keep myself busy. I am unhappy and considering going back to working in retail until I find an entry level job because at this point if they offer me a job I don't think I would even want to work there.

Am I being ungrateful and too hasty? Will leaving this internship ruin my future job prospects or should I do what makes me happy. Any input is much appreciated thank you in advance!!

What do you consider is too quick to apply for a new job?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 08:13 PM PST

So I moved from B4 (new Manager) and took a job at what I thought was a great private job, really everybody there even raves about it. They were expanding quickly and weren't sure if they had enough staff for the work, so were willing to take me on a 6 month contract, will a full time offer pending after. Client seemed good, got a quick offer and the people seemed nice. Now I am working here and I get introduced to everybody as either the temp or intern, don't get a firm mentor and didn't get invited to the happy hour for the other new hire. How soon is too soon to start applying for new jobs? I know any new job is difficult, but really has left a bad taste in my mouth.

What exactly is tax consulting vs. compliance?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 10:25 PM PST

I'm approaching the year where I have to give a more serious answer for audit/tax and I'm eyeing both options.

Tax has piqued my interest but I'm not sure what the difference between compliance vs consulting is, nor do I understand their roles regarding the different service lines. I know that compliance is something a lot of fresh associates get stuck with. I have heard that in some service lines, seniors and managers begin tackling tax consulting and split responsibilities 50/50, whereas in other service lines, compliance is the majority of what you'll always be doing.

I'm not entirely sure how true that statement is so I was curious. Also, what would the difference be between, say: SALT consulting vs International consulting, or compliance.

From my understanding, compliance seems to be filing and reviewing tax returns but I'm not entirely sure what consulting means. Right now I'm imagining a bunch of people consulting clients on ways to reduce their taxes.

Is this a good career for people who have no actual career ambition?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 10:23 PM PST

Basically, the extent of my career ambition ends with making enough to stop living paycheck to paycheck. I'm perfectly fine (and honestly would rather prefer) living in a LCOL area, and after spending the past few months working 60+ hour weeks in a stressful environment, I know that this absolutely is not for me. I do have a lot of other interests, but absolutely none of them revolve around work. In fact, not only do my interests not revolve around work, but I absolutely despise the idea that I'd be known for my career. Basically, I want to show up, clock in and get my job done, and clock out at a reasonable time, so I can go on and live the rest of my life. No desire to climb the corporate ladder whatsoever. So what do you all think, is this field a good fit for me?

Those of you who passed the CPA exam while working: advice?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 05:56 PM PST

I'm currently a graduate student, I know everyone says to try and take the exams while your in graduate school, but I work 2 jobs to support myself and on top of that I have personal family health issues I am dealing with. The courses themselves are rigorous as you all know, and tackling the CPA exam right now feels like it would honestly be setting myself up for failure so I've decided to postpone until I start work (audit for b4). I've worked an internship so I know to an extent how demanding the schedule can be. I guess I just feel trapped and screwed in so many aspects. Any advice or motivation would be appreciated.

Limiting the accounting firm's liability in a client engagement letter? An attorney has some questions.

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 08:48 AM PST

Good morning accountants of reddit. I'm an attorney who needs to engage an accountant for personal tax planning and filing returns. Last week I met with a CPA who I would like to use for these purposes. However, a term in the firm's engagement letter is giving me pause. That term provides that the firm's liability for their mistakes or negligence will be limited to the amount of fees paid by me in the last year. I'm expecting to initially pay about $1000/year, so not a very large amount. I'll note that the engagement letter makes it clear I am responsible for providing accurate records to the firm and the engagement letter should be an enforceable contract in my state (USA).

If I hold up my end of the bargain by providing all necessary information, I want (and expect) to rely on the accounting firm to file my returns correctly. My goal in hiring a CPA is to rely on their knowledge and experience. That goal is not achieved if I'm not fully protected from mistakes that are wholly the responsibility of the accountant. For example, if the firm makes a mistake resulting in $5K interest/penalties to me, I would expect to hold the firm responsible for that full amount. As an attorney, I mitigate the risk of negligence claims by carrying professional liability insurance. I assume that most accountants would be similarly insured.

Is this type of limitation normal in the accounting world? Please help me understand so that I can have an informed discussion with my prospective accountant about this issue. Thanks!
