Where does the drive to be an entrepreneur come from?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 06:31 AM PST

Financial gain? A weird unexplainable compulsion? A dissatisfaction with the way things are?

I know this is a very open question but it's just intended as a topic for discussion :)

EDIT: why is this being downvoted so much? Haha

These are my 6 business rules to transition from a Wantrapreneur to an Entrepreneur

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 09:00 AM PST

Being an entrepreneur is a never-ending journey. It's a lifestyle. Knowing how difficult this specific life path is, I want to impart a little bit of knowledge to you guys that I picked up throughout the years. These are my 6 business rules that helped me sell two 7-figure businesses and that will hopefully help you do the same!

    (S)ocialization
    (H)ealth
    (A)ltruism
    (P)assion
    (E)xperiences
    (S)elf-exploration

    Altruism

Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.
    -C.S. Lewis

Your business has to provide value:
This is a really easy concept, yet so difficult for most aspiring entrepreneurs to grasp. The average person isn't naive. They're not just going to throw their hard-earned money at you. You have to provide something of value that helps them solve a problem or allows them to grow. Facebook created a platform that connected family and friends around the world and then later introduced their ad system that generated billions of dollars for them. To be successful in business, think with your heart first and your pockets second. Don't have "money eyes" from the start because, more often than not, people will be able to sense your greed and that will lead to an immediate loss of a sale. Being genuine and authentic is imperative for long-term success while also mentally feeling good about yourself.

    Give out free content:
The truth is that everything out there is greatly saturated. You no longer only compete with people from your city, state or country but with everyone that has access to the internet around the world. How do you stand out from the rest? Be genuine and provide free content. Don't do everything for free but just enough to where you have built trust and provided enough value that the individual is hungry for more. As I stated above, provide valuable content that helps them solve a problem and then plug your product or service once they've shown interest in your methods. Another way you can accomplish this is by providing valuable content in blog form. Blogging is still a highly effective way to build trust with your audience while simultaneously driving traffic to your website: Ahrefs.com is a great example of this form of organic growth (I am not affiliated with them).

    Build trust with your customer:
Why would I buy something from a nobody when I can get a similar product or service from a reputable brand? This is where you have to separate yourself from the crowd of wantrapreneurs and also prove why your product or service is superior to more established brands. One way to accomplish this is by providing free samples of whatever you're selling. Early success comes from quality service. The most successful marketing method is WOM (word-of-mouth). It's also the cheapest. If you want people raving about your product or service, make sure that whatever you're selling is truly the best compared to whatever else is out there and that your customer service is akin to a 5-star hotel concierge.

    Set aside your ego:
Ego is very important in business. However, an overinflated ego can be detrimental to your success. I've met far too many entrepreneurs that tried to do everything themselves and doing so caused their businesses to drown. The most successful entrepreneurs are the ones that know how to build a great team around them. If your social skills are poor and you have no experience in managing employees then you absolutely need to find a strategic business partner that can help you in this department. Different perspectives spur new ideas.

    Experiences

The core of man's spirit comes from new experiences.
    -Jon Krakauer

Stop reading about success and failure stories:
I've never heard of an entrepreneur finding success without learning from failure. However, you can only learn this anecdotally by applying different business methods yourself until you find a combo that works for you. Reading other people's success/failure stories is foolish because their way of thinking, knowledge, passions and skillset is completely different to your own. It's as unique as your own fingerprint. You also don't know their complete story. Many entrepreneurs consciously or subconsciously leave out key details. Thus, replicating these business models usually leads to failure before launch.

    There's a difference between a guru and a mentor:
A mentor doesn't sell you on a scam. They sell you on knowledge that you can then apply for yourself. There is no such thing as, "If you follow my method, you will make X amount of money." If that was the case, the individuals selling the course would be out of a business. If it seems too good to be true then it most likely is a "scam" — I put the word 'scam' in quotations here because it's not always a scam but most of the time these guru's aren't completely truthful about their methods or they are leaving out important details like specifications on product research and upfront marketing costs.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket:
Trends come and go. If you don't diversify your business model, you'll take a big financial dip. Investors like entrepreneurs who stay ahead of the curve. If you're able to predict market changes, you'll garner yourself a lot of attention and financial success.

You can't make money without investing money:I see this mistake a lot: "How do I start a business with $0?" Short answer: You can't. Get a 9-5 job. Whether it's paying for website hosting, branding or marketing, you'll need at least a couple hundred dollars to get started. If you don't have money, you need a day job while grinding during the off-hours. Get rich schemes don't exist. You either put in relentless and consistent effort or you'll inevitably fall behind.

You (most likely) won't get rich fast:
Who doesn't want to make a million dollars overnight? The reality is that, for almost every entrepreneur you've heard of, it took months, if not years, to build their wealth. I've heard of companies exploding overnight after a successful marketing campaign but it took them years of grinding and barely staying afloat before that day came. Stay focused, motivated, and don't give up. The entrepreneurial life is one filled with ups and downs. That's part of the fun! Enjoy the process.

Not all of us are trust fund babies:
My family came to the States from a war-torn country when I was a child. We arrived with only one suitcase and no money. My dad worked a blue-collar job until the day I was able to retire him. Yes, dreams do come true; however, you can never forfeit the belief you have in yourself. There is a certain beauty in being self-made. The hunger to never fall back into poverty turns into an inextinguishable fire. Those born into money usually have more opportunities but less drive.

Master the 3 most effective marketing strategies:
Based on personal experience, I've found email, paid/organic social media, and word-of-mouth marketing to be the most effective marketing methods out there. They don't have a steep learning curve, nor is it hard to master any of the three methods.

    Health

Humans live on one-quarter of what they eat; on the other three-quarters lives their doctor.
    -Unknown

Sleeping less than 8 hours a day is how you become successful (myth):
There's this pseudoscience practice circling entrepreneurship where many people believe that sleeping the fewest amount of hours per night leads to success. This logical fallacy arose from motivational speakers and wantrapreneurs trying to convince the masses that entrepreneurs can develop superhuman abilities. Scientists have definitively determined that lack of sleep leads to cognitive impairment, which affects our business decision-making skills. Some of the most elite athletes in the world sleep at least 10 hours per night, which helps them prolong their respective sporting careers — Lebron James and Roger Federer being prime examples.

    Your lifestyle determines your success:
If you're not eating healthy, exercising daily and practicing good mental habits then you'll never reach your maximum entrepreneurial potential. Our lifestyle directly affects our biopsychological tendencies. The habits we adopt greatly influence how we process information, make decisions and communicate with others. If you are health deprived, you won't be able to function optimally from a business perspective.

    Self-Exploration

Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.
    -Carl Jung

Refrain from starting a family and a business at the same time:This one is controversial but it's the cold hard truth. If you're in the midst of starting a business and you also want to start a family, you'll find yourself being pulled in polar opposite directions. While children can become a source of motivation (to provide a better life), you'll find more often than not that you'll have an internal conflict of how to allocate your time so that you're able to be a good parent while also running a successful business. Start a family when you're financially stable so as to not spread yourself so thin. If you're already in this situation, understand that balance is your key to happiness. You don't need to be a multi-millionaire to find financial independence and family stability. Also, remember that time is your friend. You may take longer than your single friends to get to where you want to be, but you'll get there eventually.

Figure out the legacy you want to leave behind:However small, each of us has a meaningful effect on society. We possess the power to positively or negatively influence and impact others. Nikola Tesla was once simultaneously the richest and poorest man on the planet. He was rich in the sense that his inventions progressed mankind into the future. He was poor because his obsession for innovation compromised his well-being. Ultimately, you control how you want to live out your life.

    Passion

I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the human heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain unfolding to success... Such emotions make a man forget food, sleep, friends, love, everything.
    -Nikola Tesla

    Well-balanced individuals are the happiest:
Happiness is fleeting — it exists only in moments. Well-balanced people know how to find those moments more often than others. They usually accomplish it by diversifying themselves. They travel. They make time for networking and visiting family. They explore nature and their inner-self. They are social creatures that seek positive conversations. They choose meaningful and passion-filled career paths that provide them the ability to accomplish all the other aforementioned aspects of their life. Anything that you do in life, do it with passion, do it with fire and never compromise your spirit's honest intent. If you have a passion for something, it means you already possess the necessary skills to make a career out of it.

    Socialization

Happiness is only real when shared.
    -Christopher McCandless

Join a community of like-minded individuals:
Socializing, or more specifically, networking, is an integral part of business. Most entrepreneurs struggle with open communication because they are constantly stressed with the idea of impressing others and portraying a certain image of themselves that attracts other successful people. When they attend events such as Masterminds or other business conventions, they spend more time selling themselves than building meaningful relationships that can actually help them grow in business and life.

This gave birth to an idea of creating a luxury-based business retreat, Lusso Retreats. Yes, you knew it was coming...the plug! Our goal was to create a relaxed and collaborative environment where like-minded business professionals gather from around the world at one of our luxurious villas to work on restructuring their approach to business solutions. We have a portfolio of over 500 villas that are hand-chosen by us with the most expensive villa being $20,000,000+. Apart from business discussion, we also chat about life and any other topics that come up as a group. Every retreat includes at least one activity, such as sporting events, yacht excursions, and other unique experiences. Last, but definitely not least, we also provide amazing food and drinks. It's not all business during these retreats — we have a lot of fun!

To prevent this post from being spammy, you can find out more information on our website: LussoRetreats.com. We can only accept a limited amount of guests for each retreat, so we operate on a first-come, first-serve basis. Our next villa retreat is in 8 days on the beautiful Turks and Caicos islands with limited rooms available. Check out photos of this particular villa here. If that one isn't possible for you, we also have other upcoming retreats! If you're interested in joining a retreat or have any questions, feel free to reach out to us for more information: LussoRetreats.com/Contact.

I hope these 6 business rules help you grow your own ventures by reforming your approach to business and life. Remember to always enjoy the process!

My mental health issues have played a part of my entrepreneurship, but should I suppress that in talks?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 08:43 AM PST

    Hello my fellow entrepreneurs,

I'm Kara, 44 and small business owner. I recently did an AMA here which was well-received for the most part. I put bullet points in my original post outlining my path to opening my small business. My mental health issues have played a part of my entrepreneurship, but there were a few responders who felt strongly that I should not have included that part of my history.

This is part of what I wrote:

    - I graduated art school in '98 (studied painting and drawing)

    - During college also took a fortuitous course in book arts

    - [Should I remove??] Struggled with bipolar issues and past trauma issues throughout school and afterwards

    - Liked painting kind of sort of? Unsure who I am? OK weird.

    - Feared other people seeing my work (not good when trying to make money making art)

    - Did odd jobs for 10 odd years (counting out drill bits, teaching basic papermaking, horrible stint at The Gap, horse-carriage driving, stuffing envelopes, selling luggage, a nice stint at Barnes & Noble...)

Fast-forward to my day job as gallery guard:

    1. Midnight walked off shift that was supposed to end at 11 p.m.

    2. Joyfully started full-time at home job as hollow bookmaker

Rewind to why I started making hollow books:

    - I thought of making a hollow book when daydreaming about Anne Frank hiding while I was at the museum while automatically telling people not to touch the art

    - I wanted to use my hands to make something (but feared anything that would show my emotions to the world)

    - [Should I remove??] Working from home helped me successfully manage my mental health issues

Please tell me,--in the future, would it be better to leave out the mental health mentions when talking about my path to opening my small business?

    Thanks in advance,

    Kara

Here are some ways to get free keyword-rich content for your websites & social media.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 05:05 PM PST

Here's something useful for 1.) business owners and 2.) English learners:

You can get great keyword-rich content by starting conversations on reddit.

    1. Submit a text post to a subreddit all about writing, and ask all those writers to offer suggestions about the best content you can use.
    2. Another approach is to find a subreddit about advice and ask for advice about how to start a great article using your keywords. Sometimes the most useful thing for an entrepreneur is a fresh, new perspective from a thoughtful human.

***One subreddit operated by professional writers offering free writing help is r/writingservice

What keywords are likely to be searched by the people in your target audience? Submit those keywords to a subredditt about 1.) writing or 2.) advice and people will be happy to write some great content for your website or social media.

Submit a text post to a community with a lot of writers, and tell them the keywords you want them to use. Ask them if they'll come up with a small amount of text content to help you. Some of them will help because they hope you will hire them in the future, and others will help just because they're bored and they want to write something.

It's difficult to come up with content when you're working in isolation. One of the best things about reddit is all the opportunities to exchange ideas with thoughtful people who will inspire us to think about our brands/businesses in new ways.

Any youtube adsense folks here that could offer some advice?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 06:34 AM PST

When I go to the youtube creator and click monetization it says You are not eligible for monetization

Your channel is not eligible for joining the YouTube Partner Program. For additional information, please review the

I thought this was due to not having 4k watch hours and 1k subs. so I did a lot of hard work and spent a lot of time and gained 4k watch hours and with research realized that I should still see the possibility to be reminded when I reached the necessary goals to monetize my channel.

The problem I think, when I started this channel, I set it up, and set up a new Adsense account. but I had one from like 8 years ago that I forgot about so it denied me and declined my request. I have no problem setting it up to this account as I have added this youtube email to this account but there is no way it seems to ask youtube to review this specific issue. It was a simple mistake. I tried to set up an Adsense account with the same email as the youtube account when we are only allowed one Adsense account per person. I would like to set my old original AdSense account up to my youtube account if possible. Is there any way to get youtube to look at this?

Just F'ed up that I've spent so much time and effort getting 4k watch hours, building a website or at least securing a domain in order to get a personalized youtube link, and a the same name for email and all social media accounts amongst other things to find this out.

Voting tool for list of hundreds of ideas? Idea submission would be a bonus too.

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 01:02 AM PST

I have over 600 short bits of content (conversation starters), which I want to let friends vote on. Ideally presented in random order so that the votes are unbiased. Thumbs up/down, or a 1-5 star system etc could work. I've found some tools that would work for a small number of options, but I don't see a way to easily upload hundreds. Any ideas? A free tool would be ideal, and ability for users to submit ideas would be great too. Thank you.

Creating a subreddit to test an idea has gotten more attention than I thought

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 01:44 PM PST

    Hey,

You should think about free ways to test out your ideas before syncing money or time into them. I actually was trying to find beta testers to an encrypted file transfer platform for businesses ( https://www.notion.so/incryptfiles/incrypt-it-5825dac60f4e42a0b4245394570cb4e3 ). Trying to get people to sign up was a bit slow because I was posting it in a few different areas of Reddit and other social networks.

We really thought it made sense to reward those willing to spend their time, testing out our project when it launches so the idea was to give testers lifetime access to the paid tier. A perk that could actually be worth value in the future if the project was a success.

So that got me thinking, why not create a subreddit with that premise and see what happens. So I created https://www.reddit.com/r/BetaTestersNeeded/ with the idea that people could post their beta projects and offer unique perks that be a reward for beta testers. Within 2 days, almost 400 people joined the subreddit. What's even more interesting is that I have gotten messages asking if they could pay me to pin their post to the top.

So my recommendation is to think of free ways to try and test your idea without spending a lot of money, it may turn into something bigger than you thought.

    Less Productive on Weekends

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 01:38 PM PST

Guys - not sure if this is a logistical or psychological thing.

I (without my team) work on weekends at the office - no partying or changes in the daily routine besides the fact no one is there, and there are no meetings or deadlines.

I've always had pretty bad ADD (like most of us) but when I'm busy during the week I'm pretty much on and generating the energy/focus for what needs to be done 9-am to 9pm regardless of being tired every day of the year Monday to Friday.

On a Saturday, get up and go to the office like usual - but it takes me like 3-5 hours to get started with whatever I have to do, I take breaks and then want to leave early or go to the gym to break the monotony- this kind of stuff never happens on the weekdays.

Does anybody have the same issue? I know there is probably some solution evading me (trying to schedule meetings or have employees come in some weekend days) but the thing that annoys the shit out of me is it's almost a biological change in productivity.

I've made a lot of sacrifices trying to cut out the weekend partying and so restraining myself there and still being unproductive is a double-whammy of guilt to my entrepreneurial brain.

And nobody feed me that work-life balance shit - I've made my bones focusing entirely on my business and fully plan to retire early and do what I want creatively and socially in ten years, but no way am I going to jeopardize that and force myself to take yoga classes or something. I love work, I spend 2-3 hours working out and playing music every night so no need to worry about burnout - it's never happened to me in 8 years doing this.

    Best!

Anyone here a CS degree holder? Is it worth it?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 01:32 PM PST

I have been debating going to school for computer science for the last several months. I have heard mixed opinions on weather it's a good idea to go. Some people say that it's good to get a solid foundation of programming to become a better programmer and some say that it's a waste of time because a lot of CS students don't learn how to program very well which seemed interesting and not what I expected.

What is your experience with doing your own programming? Is anyone here a CS degree holder? Would you recommend doing the CS schooling or learning only what is necessary to accomplish what you need to for your business?

How much did you or people you know spend or were quoted for for these services? What have been your personal experiences with such companies? Any specific firms recommended? LinkedIn for the Third World

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 12:19 PM PST

Internet has only just become widely available in countries like Nigeria and India. Much of these populations still live in rural towns/villages, survive on subsistence farming, and have yet to experience the service economy.

So how effective do you think LinkedIn (or an equivalent) is for these people. How do they go about discovering and acquiring jobs through these platforms that they have no understanding of / completely unqualified for?

This brings me to my premise:

A service tailored for the next 1 billion people coming onto the internet. Those that likely have no formal education, and are initially willing to enter into lower paying jobs / trade schools in order to learn skills necessary for service economy jobs. For companies, it offers a way to support the local economy, acquire cheap talent, and mold employees early on. For the consumer, it allows them to break out of their underserved barrier.

What do you think about this? Do you know people with this background successfully finding jobs through an existing service like LinkedIn? I know LinkedIn has started some initiatives (i.e. the Sangam project in India) to tackle this, but I'm unsure how successful it has been, and how consumers with no education can have success on a platform dominated by highly educated / highly experienced folks.

Selling SEO optimized niche ecommerce website, french market

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 06:46 AM PST

Has great potential, honestly I'm selling it just because I'm tired of the niche.

It started getting traction recently, especially last month with 2k profit and this month I think it can double easily.

All these visits and profits are organic and have no paid ads or any SEA.

All the sales are from pure organic search, this site can easily make 10k a month in the next few months when it will start ranking better on the search results.

The niche is a passion niche ( related to anime/manga ) and has a lot of popularity ( Worldwide, but in this instance, France ).

If you are even remotely interested, send me a dm and I'll be glad to enter into more details, and most importantly, send actual pro

    College student, online brand help?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 10:30 AM PST

So I'm a 22 year old college student. I plan on graduating in Fall of 2020 with a bachelor's in marketing. The problem is I don't really want to work for someone else. The idea of working for someone else for the rest of my life is scary to me. I have no desire in living that kind of life.

After getting into fitness I discovered I want to do that, build a following and sell my own clothing brand. Some examples are Alphalete, ASRV and Esntls.

How should I go about it? I have an idea for a name but don't know if I should use it and create an LLC right now and buy the name domain.

How should I go about creating my online clothing brand?

An upcoming phone call with the founder of a startup I want to join. I don't want to mess it up.

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 08:23 AM PST

I sent an email to the founder of a startup I've been admiring for a long time. I explained to him my passion for the startup's mission and eagerness to help in this early stage.

Now, a little bit of a background: I know nothing about the startup world. I've never joined a startup before and my family was dirt poor and not into business. For me, a technology startup is a mythical creature that I only hear people talking about. I'm yet to experience the real thing.

My goal is to get into this startup, work my ass off and learn about how to build something people want. I want this phone call to kickstart my journey.

I planned the things I'll say to impress the founder, the vision and ideas I have for the startup, and my willingness to work for free (they're well funded, but I just want to demonstrate that I'm not in it for short-term gain), but for some reason, I'm starting to freak out. I don't want to mess it up or end the phone call on an underwhelming note.

Since I'm not familiar with the intricate world of startups, I'm not sure how to approach this. How can I guarantee that this call will be a success? What are the things I should avoid? When a startup founder agrees to have a call with a prospective employee, what is he/she looking for?

Need Advice: Freemium or Free Trial for B2C product?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 08:26 PM PST

I'm a bootstrapped founder and in the next few months, I'm going to start charging for my product. I am trying to decide between a feature-restricted freemium model or a free trail model for the initial approach. I would appreciate any thoughts, resources, or learnings from anyone who has had to make a similar decision with a B2C product.

My product is a mobile app called Daily Chinese for iOS and Android that helps Chinese learners grow their vocabulary through daily practice. I've seen steady user growth and strong retention with the initial MVP. My goal for the next phase is to determine if people will pay to use this product, get a general idea of what they would be willing to pay, and to start generating revenue to put back into the business.

I'm also going to be contracting a new dev team for the next phase of the project as my initial team has rolled off of the project after launching the MVP. Given the situation with this new team, I may not have resources to easily test different pricing models right off the bat.

Any thoughts or resources related to freemium models vs free trial models would be helpful. A free trial model seems to make sense since it would be easiest to implement, but I'm worried about losing word-of-mouth growth by eliminating long-time users of a free version. On the other hand, without the ability to test at the outset, I worry that a freemium model might be risky.

Most other apps in the space use a feature-limited, subscription freemium models with different price tiers depending on renewal frequency (1 month, yearly, lifetime, etc).

    Thank you for your thoughts!

(Also, if anyone knows a react native developer that could be interested in this project, let me know. I'm going to be located in Singapore come January so someone in that region would be preferable, but definitely not a requirement.)
