Posted: 04 Dec 2019 04:30 AM PST Okay so I recently decided I wanted to set up my own business (hence why I am on this sub). So I did the thing any person under 50 would do and searched how to set up a business, run ads etc on YouTube, google and in this sub. Well slap me in the face and call me Shirely, I was sent down a massive black hole of "business gurus" who for the knock off price of $1997 (normally 5k) could make me a millionaire. My YouTube is still getting panned by fake guru ads as we speak. I was so taken back by these figures that I have been a two day rabbit hole researching if all this was legit in anyway. Interestingly, if you look into this and go back all the way to the 70's/80's Don Lapre is seemingly the godfather of dropshipping. He was doing it even before the Internet by placing small ads in a newspaper (the equivalent of FB ads). If this ad got a certain amount of sales, he would then apparently scale this ad to thousands of other newspapers (sounds familiar, right?). When that was failing, he moved on to release vitamin products which seems to be an MLM business where when you sign up to 20 people to buy the vitamin products you got a bonus, and some money if the people you signed up also sold. So yes dropshipping gurus making outlandish claims are nothing new and have been around for decades. Anyway Don Lapre was eventually arrested for nearly 70 counts of fraud and killed himself in his jail cell before he was sentenced. By this point I'm starting to realise these people aren't selling you a product but a dream. Have you noticed how none of them talk about what skills you will gain, it's more about lifestyle and FREEDOM you gain. I seriously doubt anyone has got rich in a year from drop shipping or affiliate marketing unless you already had a following you could leverage. Here's some more interesting videos I came across on my journey. I'm not affiliated with any of these guys, their videos were just super interesting: The video is titled "The Cult of Dan Lok- brainwashed student lost $26,000". It's a testimonial from a student giving the real results he got and the inner workings of Dan Loks courses and membership scheme Here's another video by the same guy but this time on Sam Ovens The video is titled: "Sam Ovens is a fake guru!? (100% REAL TESTIMONIAL) He shows a testimonial that Sam Ovens uses on his promotional videos. Weirdly the same guy giving this testimonial has given testimonials for a lot of other gurus, and some of the things he says about himself doesn't add up with his LinkedIn profile. The video is titled: "The Contrepreneur Forumla Exposed" This guy explains the science behind the formula used by these Entrepreneurs selling you courses: The video is titled "I got an Amazon best seller with a blank book" To prove how bullshit the Amazon Best Seller tag is, the same guy also got an Amazon Best Seller by publishing a book with no text in. It got an Amazon best seller status within 48 hours... So yeah make of all of this what you will. But be careful for pursuing any business venture that promised to make you rich with 2 years or offers you "FREEDOM". We laugh at these gurus and some of their outlandish claims. People's lives do get ruined for the sake of fake business gurus buying an extra boat. There are examples of guys who are in tens of thousands of debt but are then encouraged to take out PayPal loans to sign up to the course to make their money back... no joke. Be very careful out there. [link] [comments] |
Startup idea to solve entry level job hunt Posted: 04 Dec 2019 03:06 AM PST Problem: Young people who do not have great resumes often get rejected for multiple jobs because of a lack of experience and qualifications - especially in the hospitality and retail sector, where turnover is high due to wrong hires because the resume does not properly tell what a candidate is like. Solution: A job platform for entry level roles where job seekers create a profile and answer questions about their behaviour and work style - then the platform matches candidates to jobs based on cultural fit rather than experience and qualifications A better team culture is proven to reduce turnover, improve performance and create a more satisfied team What are people's thoughts on this? Would it help you as a jobseeker, being matched to jobs based on cultural fit? Do you think it would be beneficial to employers to hire their entry level positions based on someone who fits the culture better, despite not doing the job before? [link] [comments] |
Ok Entrepreneurs - How WOULD You Sell a Book/Course on How to Make a Million Dollars? Posted: 04 Dec 2019 08:31 AM PST Everybody complains about courses that tout "How to Make a Million Dollars". And fraudsters should be treated accordingly. But what if you wrote a book that actual DID tell how to make a million dollars? How would you market/sell it? Here's the deal. About 15 years ago I asked some guys that were making over a million a year to recommend ONE book for me to read. Several of them suggested the same book. That was enough for me to want to read the book. These guys all "Walked the Talk". They all actually WERE millionaires. However, the book was written in 1933. That made me hesitate. I decided to read the book anyway. It was/is called "Think and Grow Rich". You've probably heard of it, but haven't read it. You should. I did what the book said and made over $1MM. Subsequently I've written what I consider to be an updated version of that book. It tells my story and stories of many other men who made millions. You don't need my book (or any book) to make a million dollars - BUT you do need to get specialized knowledge, a great idea, and passion to make it happen. Books and videos can help you with those things. So, starting from scratch, how would YOU go about selling such a book? Everyone complains about "get rich quick" fraudsters. I don't want to be one and I am not one. But the knowledge I have could be helpful to many. So... what should I do? [link] [comments] |
How my product launch failed - Just a bad day today Posted: 04 Dec 2019 12:16 PM PST Hey /entrepreneur! I want to share my experience launching Adbox on Product Hunt, and maybe help you avoid a future headache. First of all, let me explain what the product is. Adbox is a newsletter to get the best Facebook ad examples from fast-growing e-commerce brands. I planned its launch 2 weeks in advance to prepare the images, description, gifs and first comment from the maker to make sure everything goes super well. I scheduled my launch for December 4th and went to sleep. I woke up waiting to see Adbox in the first positions since I sent to several groups and told many people about the launch days before. But, to my surprise, it was not on the Popular page. I could not find it at first, then I contacted Product Hunt via twitter and they told me that Adbox is in the Newest Tab, where nobody goes :( with over 115 upvotes and a few comments. It was the most popular product from the Newest Tab and among the best compared with the Popular tab as well. I wrote an email to Product Hunt and this was their answer - Screenshot So, basically email-based, newsletters, etc are not gonna appear in the Popular tab, so the planning and time invested in this launch were useless. Yes, I know, it was my mistake, so here are some learnings and maybe help somebody! What would I do differently? - Do not waste that much time preparing for PH launch and read before to make sure it is aligned with its product preferences. - Do not focus the launch around only one platform, instead, treat each platform as its own. - Post on Reddit sooner ❤️ Thanks for reading and let's keep it up. Just a bad day today ;) [link] [comments] |

Freelance business consultant looking for a business consultant. Posted: 04 Dec 2019 01:49 PM PST I'm a young entrepreneur that has been successfully providing freelance business development, efficiency, & product redesign services since high school. I started by reaching out to companies & startups I like to provide consumer feedback, & somehow a couple of them started paying. I've been doing okay, & because of this I now run a branding department for a nonprofit that involves several of my favorite hobbies; the downside is this position is strictly commission, & monetary payoffs are far between. I have traded some of my consulting time for small steaks in start ups & a couple of them are starting to pay off. I'm looking to start some companies of my own, but because my knowledge is mostly self taught I need help creating an official Business Plan. How can I find consultants that can help me put this together so I can go to banks to shop for loans?[link] [comments] |

Survey for people who sell products online? Posted: 04 Dec 2019 01:36 PM PST I would like some people who have an online store (e.g e-commerce) to participate in a 5-minute survey. It's related to selling products online with a different filtering method. Link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeTwvKLG9Py0_6oWzPZmPlWtAOYXeH7ctH8veZAgUjAJyoXvA/viewform Thank you. Posted: 04 Dec 2019 01:05 PM PST I just got my first big client in a new venture, and those Stripe fees sure add up. Should I use something else? Or do it another way? I like that I've got my client on a recurring payment schedule that won't require us going back and forth to make sure I get paid, but I'm giving up ~$15/week on $500/week. I guess it's worth it, but dang. How do you accept payment for services rendered? [link] [comments] |
How to structure equity agreement? Posted: 04 Dec 2019 09:15 AM PST Me (founder) brought on a brand designer to get my company off the ground. He initially came on as a freelancer but it ended up being a good partnership so he's taking more of a full time stance managing the brand/design. Last month we verbally (and Slack) agreed to an 80/20 equity split with 4% revenue share for 2020-2021 (with a few other details). We're getting ready to launch the site and for piece of mind we both want to get something in writing before doing so. We're already spread pretty thin right now in terms of capital so we just want some agreement in place that'll hold us off for a while until we can pay a lawyer to build something more comprehensive. Does anyone know of how we should structure this? Is some sort of template out there? [link] [comments] |
Could a small flower shop in a town of 2,000 people be profitable? Posted: 04 Dec 2019 12:59 PM PST Long time lurker here. I love the idea of owning my own business. My dad has a successful construction business and I've seen the good and bad of that. Today while browsing craigslist I saw that the flower shop in my little town is for sale. They're only asking $75,000 and that includes two vehicles and established customers. I don't know that a business (any business that relies on population for that matter in a small town like this) could be very profitable. Before I waste any of my time or the seller's time I thought I'd get some opinions from internet strangers who have no context beyond what I've included above. What do you think? [link] [comments] |
Started my First Business other than a car blog and I think I may have messed up.... Posted: 04 Dec 2019 12:28 PM PST I'm 23 and started a subscription box company for organic smoking products with the option to buy each product individually as well. I knew going into this that it was going to be hard, with the lack of ability to advertise, but this is getting ridiculous. The store has been live for 2 months and have so far only made 2 sales equaling about $3 in profit. I thought going into this that since the marijuana boom is a new green rush, if I sold the shovels I would have an easier time. Boy was I wrong! No matter what I am lumped into the same categories as those who sell marijuana. Huge bummer. This has made it incredibly hard to get credit card processing and advertising using influencers has gone nowhere fast. Not sure what to do now, trying to focus on content marketing and seo for now as those are the only real viable options I have to get in front of people. I am bootstrapping this so I can't really afford a big advertising agency, anyone have any ideas? I've always wanted to try dropshipping, should I try that out while I produce content and SEO optimize my current business? The cannabis and cannabis accessories business is a battle between titans. Almost impossible for anyone to get in without massive investor backing, my competitors close a multi-million dollar deal with a few venture capitalist firms. Should I try and seek investment as well? Looking for advice from more experienced entrepreneurs who have dealt with this kind of dilemma. Thank you for any input you have! [link] [comments] |
Order Fulfillment - Super Small E-commerce Posted: 04 Dec 2019 12:27 PM PST Hi! I have been trying to research this but I have found it a little difficult. Would any of you be willing to provide me with some guidance? I run an independent magazine and we sell between 500-1000 copies every 6 months (we are bi-annual). I spend about 20 hours shipping and packaging during our heavy months (twice a year) and I am looking to outsource this. I currently use Squarespace and ShipStation. What I am looking for: A company to house this inventory that can ship domestically AND internationally. 40% of our market is in the EU. I simply don't want to package and ship anymore. Any suggestions? Anything I'm not considering? Second Question: Because of the weight it's difficult for me to shop 30+ copies internationally. Any thoughts on how to make this cheaper? The shipping for 100 copies to the Uk was about 650 dollars last go around (one retailer). Edit: Each copy of the magazine weighs 1.8 pounds, it's big! [link] [comments] |
How to license pop-art image rights for distribution?? Posted: 04 Dec 2019 11:46 AM PST I'm exploring an opportunity to create a pop-art printing business. I've come across multiple online businesses offering essentially the same prints on canvas. I was curious to see if I could find the digital asset myself, but I have been unsuccessful. I am curious to know where these companies find these images and how do they license them? A perfect example is googling "Banksy DJ Monkey" or "smart frog print" and there are several places offering prints of these images on just about everything. Any idea how ones acquires licenses to these graphics? Do these companies reach out to each artist individually? Any insight into this world would be much appreciated! [link] [comments] |

Offering free services to start customer base? Posted: 04 Dec 2019 11:22 AM PST I'm looking at starting a service business from home - I'm wondering what the community's thoughts are about offering initial service for free to get the first few customers and build up some experience/references/base. I'm looking at vacation rental management business - so likely anything free would be the first few months (if a customer elected to stay long term) rather than the life of that customer. I'm just not sure beyond that how to crack the first couple of users. [link] [comments] |

I would love to work on this project on full-time, but i dont have money for this. Im glad for ideas to make this happen. Kind regards Daniel [link] [comments] |

Idea to startup my own RV/Boat storage, but need some help Posted: 04 Dec 2019 10:16 AM PST Thinking of starting a small RV/Boat storage business on my property, help! Hello all, I have some outstanding debt that's been crushing me financially. In looking at some alternatives for supplemental income, I came across the idea of utilizing some acreage on my property as an RV/boat storage lot. My property is 5 acres and the back 2.25 acres is unused area right now, most small brush and overgrowth. If I were to clear this area and possibly make it gravel, I think it would be a good spot for easy access for possible clients. So, what would be a good strategy to startup this idea? I live in the northern part of the thumb in MI, about 10-15mins from the water and, from my research, the closest storage place to me is about 20 minutes. What would be some added benefits I could offer clients? Gates? Cameras? [link] [comments] |
Any advice on getting more photography clients? Posted: 04 Dec 2019 10:16 AM PST I thought I'd throw this question out since I follow this sub. I currently do event photography (sometimes portraits) on the side. The primary way I get business is by via cold emailing that I set up every sunday. I was wondering if you guys have any good ideas for attracting more. I also feel like I under price myself, but I've only been shooting for a year. I charge 150 an hour and every client has been very happy. [link] [comments] |
