Value Investing Question on tax loss harvesting/wash sales |
Question on tax loss harvesting/wash sales Posted: 01 Dec 2019 02:47 PM PST Hello - I'm based in the US and currently carrying unrealized losses on some hedges. For example, I have a short position on the SPY, and I'd like to claim the loses I've incurred without closing out the hedge for a 30 day period. In a perfect world I would: cover the short, claim the loss, immediately open an equivalent position in another ETF like IVV so I can maintain the hedge without directly triggering the wash sale rule. I know the rule is specifically put in place to prevent people like me using those transactions to claim my loses, however my question is how strictly this is enforced and if anyone has any direct experience with this.
