    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Fundamentals Friday Dec 06, 2019

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 12:07 AM PST

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on fundamentals, but if fundamentals aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against fundamentals here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Most fundamentals are updated every 3 months due to the fact that corporations release earnings reports every quarter, so traders are always speculating at what those earnings will say, and investors may change the size of their holdings based on those reports. Expect a lot of volatility around earnings, but it usually doesn't matter if you're holding long term, but keep in mind the importance of earnings reports because a trend of declining earnings or a decline in some other fundamental will drive the stock down over the long term as well.

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

    Market Cap - Shares Outstanding - Volume - Dividend - EPS - P/E Ratio - EPS Q/Q - PEG - Sales Q/Q - Return on Assets (ROA) - Return on Equity (ROE) - BETA - SMA - quarterly earnings

If you have a basic question, for example "what is EBITDA," then google "investopedia EBITDA" and click the Investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

Will 2020 be the decade of the Pharma Bubble?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 06:31 AM PST

I've been reading a lot of books/articles these past few months to learn to be a better trader, and I've noticed the "trending" stocks a lot more lately. There are a lot of Pharma companies who go from anywhere of .75 cents to $15 a share, and then over night they're shooting up $30+.

I am not a professional by any means, but I wanted to ask if anyone else see's this trend as well? Thoughts and discussions are all welcome!

    Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B)

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 09:53 AM PST

BRK.B is the reasonably priced version of Berkshire Hathaway (also BRK.A). The weekly chart is setting up for a breakout higher as demand has steadily increased over time as highlighted by the uptrend. I started into January $230 calls today in anticipation of buyers taking out the supply level thus pushing it higher.

    Chart: https://imgur.com/gallery/Er0LV2H

Edit: It is important to note that the 100-day average true range (ATR) is 2.60. Don't underestimate it because the percentage gain looks small. Hence, THE POWER OF OPTIONS. Happy Trading!

A top Tesla analyst raised his ‘bull case’ for the stock to $500, or 50% higher from here

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 02:58 PM PST

    https://www.cnbc.com/2019/12/05/morgan-stanleys-adam-jonas-tesla-stock-bull-case-raised-to-500.html

Morgan Stanley increased its "bull case" for Tesla to $500 a share on Thursday, in the firm's calculation of a best case scenario for the company's value if Cybertruck is successful and the new factory in China exceeds expectations.

"In an optimistic scenario," Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said he sees Tesla selling 100,000 Cybertrucks by the end of 2024, at an average price of $50,000. Additionally, Jonas believes Tesla's Gigafactory in China could perform better than anticipated and reach a production rate of 450,000 units per year by 2024/2025.

$ALKS Three reasons to BUY that Analysts are not (yet) telling you..

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 11:13 AM PST

$ALKS Three reasons to BUY that Analysts are not (yet) telling you..

They say that maximum gains are made when there is a discrepancy between market perception and the reality..so here are the three things I have discovered that analysts covering $ALKS out there are not yet talking about (or only sharing reports with their deep pocket hedge fund clients).. So here is my analysis for the small, hard-working investors out there saving their money and giving them an edge, for a change (big institution investors are always ahead of you most of the time)...

Reason 1 => Alkermes recent acquisition of Rodin Therapeutics is a hidden gem..Rodin has a revolutionary patented (and it is important to create value) technology for brain mapping (neurons health & connections to be specific) ..these scans are performed using non-invasive and easy-to-use outpatient technology (which means there are no side effects, and it is cheap and frequent use technology) ...and these scans have tremendous potential in Alzheimer's and other neuro-degenerative disorders (which is one of the largest and growing market need). This technology can be used in many other applications even for performance measurement for other drugs and clinical trials.
I am not going to comment on Rodin's drug pipeline because they still seem to be working with Alkremes their new parent company to plan the trials - but that should be a big surprise ( I expect in Q1-2020 in their earnings calls). Remember, Rodin only gets $900 million if they deliver results and achieve milestones - so they will be working hard to get there. Rodin management and scientific team is impressive.. Do you know that Google Ventures is an investor in Rodin Therapeutic...!!!

Reason 2 => Increasing funding to fight Opioid Addiction and Litigation Settlement Monies coming from Opioid Lawsuits will greatly favor Vivitrol Drug=> Do you know that Vivitrol injection (monthly dose) is only a few of those drugs to help with the severe Opioid relapse patients (Vivitrol is also prescribed to Alcohol addiction patients ) that keeps them healthy without giving them another Opioid? Given the Opioid epidemic and Medicare/Medicaid approving the reimbursement for Vivitrol - the drug revenue is going to be on the upside...Do you know that most of the other drugs (these are called MATs) are mild Opioids - so basically you are giving mild Opioids to help patients stay sober (and exchanging one addiction with another)...Vivitrol is a non-Opioid that blocks the receptors in brain that create urges for drug addicts. So Vivitrol patients can eventually withdraw from it after 1-2 years. Vivitrol is already reimbursed by government paid insurance and private insurance..and according to the last management update they are already approved in 20+ states and expanding. This will be a huge revenue surprise visible in 2020.

Reason 3 => This may be a strong possibility in late 2020 or early 2021 - but $ALKS is great acquisition target (for Biogen and others) given $ALKS wide ranging CNS drug pipeline..and new management team they acquired via Rodin Therapeutics. The 52-week stock range of $ALKS is $17.11-$37.75 ( I expect in the next year - they will be $45 target)..in other words - given where the stock price is today, there is a good chance that you will see 200%-300% increase in stock price...

Now many people will wonder what are my credentials and intentions to present such analysis...well, I let's say I have the background and doing years of research in this field, and on this company in particular because of the good drug they have developed to fight addiction. I am not a stock pusher ..I am a self-learning and hard working investor like you ... who wants to share my thoughts with like-minded small-investors out there and help them make some money knowing that universe will return to me multiple times over (hence my username and anonymity). Yes, I believe in my own research and I have long-term positions in this stock so there is a positive bias in my opinion.

I have only one ask - if you like my analysis and use it to make some money - just Click Like or reply to me so I know that you care...may be if you make a lot of money so you will send me a thank you note too :)) Please share other comments if you feel I missed any important points..I love to hear divergent views and not just drink my own cool aid (sitting too much in front of my terminals and reading research reports) ...

Conclusion: Take some long positions in $ALKS before the stock heats up (don't bet the farm on this one stock and also don't expect to get rich quick..there are Short Sellers out there trying to buy the stock for cheap spreading misinformation. stay tune to my posts!),.

Dollar General Dropping After Strong Earnings- Why?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 10:46 AM PST

After DG outperformed earnings expectations and adjusted future outlook up, the stock had a quick 5% bump but has been falling since. Anyone following DG? Here's my theory for what's up, what's your view?

DG is trading at historically high P/B and P/E ratios, and investors were aware of it, so when the earnings were good (there was a lot of loss to the run up of the earnings call, especially since Dollar Tree tanked on mildly weak earnings) most investors saw a good time to exit and capture their gains. So instead of encouraging new buyers onto the floor, owners saw an opportunity to exit before a more significant correction.

Other than that, I can't understand it. It's still murky because every stock right now is trading at higher than normal P/B & P/B, plus DG does well in market downturns since it's a discount retailer. Investors are anticipating a correction to DG before the larger correction to the market?

    Thoughts?

Street too optimistic on AWS margins

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 09:11 AM PST

$AMZN The Street is likely too optimistic on AWS margins based on feedback from the annual re:Invent conference in Vegas this week. AWS appears to be quickly ramping up spending in sales and R&D to slow share gains by $MSFT and $GOOGL, but the Capital One data breach in the summer is hurting AWS enterprise adoption. https://street-guru.com/opinion/amzn_msft_googl_street-too-optimistic-on-aws-margins_20191206_788/

After WeWork Debacle, SoftBank Shares Now Too Cheap, Analyst Says -- Barrons.com

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 08:08 AM PST

SoftBank Group shares have tumbled about 30% since their peak in July, suffering the consequences of WeWork's disastrous attempt to go public and its subsequent financial rescue by SoftBank, which already had been the office-sharing company's largest investor.

The irony is that during that same period, the value of the company's single largest asset -- its 26% stake in Alibaba Group Holding (ticker: BABA) -- has appreciated more than 20%.

SoftBank Group stock (9984.Japan) continues to trade at a substantial discount to its underlying collection of assets. Its Alibaba stake alone is worth $136 billion, well in excess of SoftBank's $80 billion market cap. This year, that investment approach has proven to be a trap for value investors -- it was, in fact, the underlying logic of Barron's bullish and ill-timed cover story earlier this year.

According to this article SoftBank ( SFTBY ) may be a good stock to pick up. Should I invest in SoftBank?

It seems like I would be buying the dip.

Why would an ETF pay drastically less than it's listed Dividend Yield?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 09:23 AM PST

I'll use close rounded numbers to illustrate this true story.

I bought $500 of an ETF that has a listed Div/Yield of 3%. My expectation based on these numbers was that I would see an annual 3% $15 dividend return, or a quarterly 0.75% $3.75 dividend return.

Now, I'm new-ish to investing, so I may be missing something that's obvious to seasoned investors, but the dividend payment I received for this ETF was only $1. Time has passed since the payment was issued and the yield is still listed as %3. What might have happened here?

In case it matters, this is a bond market ETF.
