I'm being raped on a vessel sailing international waters. Help.

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 08:09 PM PST

I'm an apprentice officer on a container ship and I'm being sexually abused by the captain.

This is the post I uploaded on r/rape for those who are interested. People were very supportive and encouraged me to further seek advise, so here am I...

I'm a Greek national, the captain's russian, and the ship's registry is Marshall islands and the incidents happened in international waters. I'm in desperate need of help and barley holding it together, but I don't know what kind of help to look for. What kind of lawyer should I be looking for? What should I do in the meantime? Thank you so much.

UPDATE: Thank you all SO SO MUCH for your warm support and advice, I really needed this. I was skeptical, even hesitant in the beginning but this turns out to be the very best choice I have made in a few weeks. I am literally sobbing while on duty and I am so grateful.

I decided to first contact the Greek Consulate on the matter as per your advice. I will also checkout all the links you have posted. Please keep me in your prayers and I hope this really works out.

Edit: Bot tells me I need to include my location. I already did, but things happend in international waters.

...................................... Please ignore the following phrases. I'm just doing this because I really need the post to work. The incident happened in Greece. The incident happened in Russia. The incident happend in the Marshall Islands. I am in Greece. I am in Russia. I am in the Marshall Islands.

I don’t know where to post this. My mom hasn’t come home and i don’t know what to do

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 03:49 AM PST

(In South Carolina) This may sound like an overreaction but i don't know what else to do. my mom went out at 7 last night and said she'd be home by 11pm. it's 6:45 am now and her car is not here. me and my little brother go to school at 8. i don't know where she is, she's not picking up her phone because it's so early, and we have no family to call. I know someone isn't missing unless they've been gone 24 hours and if my mom is ok i don't want the police on her case, but i'm worried and afraid.

EDIT: UPDATE!! My mom finally got back to me after 4 hours of not knowing where she was. Thank you to everyone who gave me the courage to go to the police. Turns out she was staying at a friends house after her car broke down, which she did not tell me at all. I'm honestly pretty pissed off, but she is safe, thank you again to everyone who helped.

Health insurance forces patient to use their TERRIBLE pharmacy only.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 06:45 AM PST

My husband has a serious medical condition which requires him to order from a specialty pharmacy. When he was first out of the hospital we were able to chose our pharmacy and everything was fine. Then we got a letter from our health insurance saying we can only use the specialty pharmacy they own. The medication is required to be kept within a certain temperature range and in hot summer months we told the customer service representatives it needed to be sent in ice. Every month they sent it incorrectly, we spend hours on the phone talking to their pharmacists, customer service and managers to try to correct the issue. The pharmacy required us to send the ruined medication back by leaving it in a box on our front step, which they said would be picked up by UPS Pick Up that same day. No one picked it up for over a week. We had to call about that multiple times as well. This is a privacy concern, we would not want someone to steal the package and have access to my husband's medical information and other personal information required in the box.

This medication is $6,000 a month so we obviously can't afford to pay that without insurance. My husband is not alone; the company has almost all 1-star reviews with similar complaints on google.

I thought the problem would eventually go away but now I am desperate to fix this. My husband gets so stressed every month having to deal with them. This month they messed up the order and said they couldn't do anything about it and he should call again at the end of the day (he already called back several times and no one will help him), so he won't have his medicine in time. How is this fair or legal? I just contacted my congressman. What else can I do? I just want us to be able to order the medicine from a reliable pharmacy so I don't have to panic every month about if he will get his medicine or not.

    Location: OH,USA

Edit: my husband has already called our health insurance company and said he wants to use a different pharmacy due to these issues and they said no.

I bought a casino and have been finding money hidden in odd places

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 12:54 PM PST

The owner has no interest in any of it says I can have it but is there any way he could fuck me over and claim he never said this? Disclaimer the casino is not currently open.

While exploring the main office I found about 200 decks of cards nothing suspicious but some where incredibly heavy after inspection they where cut out with filled early 20th century gold and Morgan dollar, the decks are not that old. Pulled the drawers out of the desk and found over 5grand in gold certificates, is all this mine?

My(20F) male roommate(22M) keeps invading my privacy in our apartment. (WI, USA)

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 08:33 AM PST

Note: some small unimportant details are changed to protect my privacy because I fear retaliation if this post is discovered.

Some quick backstory. Myself, my roommate (let's call him Mike), and our third roommate have lived together for a while now and from the start Mike has had a very annoying habit of going into my room when I'm not home to turn off my electronics (my fan, lights, computer, etc.). This has progressed to entering my room while I'm in it without my permission. I was naked in my bed (thankfully covered by a blanket) when he entered my room. Apparently (according to Mike) he knocked but I had my headphones on.

I work third shift so I'm home and sleeping most of the time during the day and I'm now very worried about being unconcious in my own room.

So I guess here are my questions: 1. Am I legally entitled to privacy in my own room from my roommates? Could there be any legal repercussions for them if they come into my bedroom uninvited. 2. Is my landlord allowed to prohibit me from installing a lock on the door if I am in fear of my personal privacy and possessions being tampered with? 3. Is this something I could use to break lease early and get away from this creep?

Required permission to move my daughter to Europe

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 04:22 AM PST

Note: I'm asking about the law on the US side only.

My 11 yr old daughter's mother has abandoned her and I'm currently living and working in Europe.

I have full legal custody in the state of Arizona but I have been told that's not enough to move the child overseas and that doing so without permission could be considered kidnapping.

For now, the mother has agreed to sign and notarize whatever is necessary to facilitate this. I'm concerned the mother will change her mind and demand that my daughter move back to the US at a later time.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. I have only a few weeks while I'm in the US to figure all of this out.

    Mother in law vs Widow

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 06:39 AM PST

My husband passed away when he was at his cousins house in Maryland. His mother got the call before me and left her home in Delaware to drive to Maryland. She took everything that he had. Leaving out children with nothing to hold on to of his. I live in New Jersey. Our youngest had purchased (she picked out and I paid) a watch for him for Father's day about 6 years ago. His mother took it and denied she had it. Come to find it she gave it to another family member who lives in Philadelphia as payment for moving a washing machine. What can I do to get this watch back to my daughter. All his things should come back but all we really want and are prepared to fight for is the watch.

What can I do? The family is resisting returning it and I don't care about burning bridges. By any legal means necessary. My kid is devastated.

    What can I do?

AZ - Is it legal for companies to sell personal info of job applicants?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 09:41 AM PST

I applied, and interviewed, for a position last month, just the one because I'm seriously looking but it looked too good to pass up.

I'm now getting junk mail, looks like it is fake benefits info (car insurance) associated with this organization.

The junk mail uses my middle initial, which I don't use on anything but it is on my resume/typical application stuff.

Company uses Hirebridge as its application portal, but Hirebridge's TOS explicity says that the client owns applicant data.

So either Hirebridge is lying, or the company I applied to sold my data.

I've been in the workforce for over twenty years now, easily hundreds of job applications sent, never had any inkling of my data having been sold. Is this legal to do so? If not, what recourse would be available?

    Video of me being assaulted

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 09:10 AM PST

A "friend" of mine posted a video of me being assaulted while passed out one night. It is super embarrassing and I tell him to stop posting it and to delete the video. Recently he sent me the video again and I told him to delete it to which he replied no. Can I sue him to get the video deleted?

    EDIT:

I was sexually assaulted while asleep with a hotdog, they shoved it down my throat while i was asleep in a bedroom visiting a college in my state of illinois.

My employer informed me they’ve overpaid me $12,000 this year and want me to pay it back. [IL]

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 09:10 PM PST

I'm 28yrs and live and work in Illinois. My HR person informed me today they recognized a payroll error after an audit. The options presented were to either write them a single check for $12k in 2019 or have the amount evenly deducted from my paycheck over the course of 12 months in 2020. If I leave the company I will need to repay the remaining amount.

Currently, I have $18k in savings, which I worked hard at saving despite having to deal with over $6k of medical expenses this year. However, paying $12k will wipe my savings, which makes me feel very sad and angry bc it wasn't my mistake. Paying it back over 12 months would force me to stay at the company. I've actually been planning to quit because the business is not profitable, poor work life balance, and I've been unhappy there. I felt comfortable with my savings of what I thought was enough to travel solo for a few months to reset my mind. But now that's not possible.

A couple things raise red flags for me. I asked why they didn't catch it earlier and said they didn't recognize the error until the audit. Shouldn't there be more audits than once at the end of the year? I would have been fine if they told me this like 2 months in but a whole year?? I I asked if I was the only one who had the error and they said yes. My HR person said she needs to talk with our legal team to draft a contract for me to sign that I agree with repaying. I haven't signed anything yet.

I'm also concerned about additional implications I'm not thinking about like taxes. If I was being paid more, that means I was also taxed more? So it doesn't seem like it would make sense id pay back this amount.

Am I allowed to ask for a detailed breakdown of what I owe minus taxes? Is there is any legal protection or claim I could make to keep at least some money? It's not like I was lavishly living above my means or anything. I wasn't aware I was being paid more and didn't do anything malicious. I have incurred a lot of medical expenses, which normally but be stressful but I was able to afford these expenses comfortably. What steps are recommended to make sure I cover my bases?

Personal Trainer/Gym Contract - She has missed 29 out of 96 sessions [Missouri]

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 08:40 AM PST

I signed a contract with gym for personal training for 12 months/96 sessions at 2 sessions a week. That contract ends this month. She has missed 29 of the 96 sessions we scheduled. I asked the director at the gym where she's employed what is going to happen to those unused sessions as I get charged the same amount monthly. The director said the sessions would continue until they are used. The issue is, she cancels constantly and has even no call/no show'ed to our scheduled sessions. I have no intention of signing another contract.

I've read through the contract. It says that sessions are non-refundable and non-transferable; however, it says that packages of 48 sessions or more must be used at 2 per week, but that there are no refunds for sessions not used within the required period described above.

I'm 99% sure I'm just going to have to suck it up and let her stretch 29 sessions out over next year so that I'm not out any money, but does anyone here have any advice?

    Hospital legally abducted my husband?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 12:19 PM PST

This whole situation is so ludicrous I can't quite believe it even happened. We need help. We're in Virginia.

My husband is a veteran. On Nov 15th he had a scheduled check up at our local Veterans Affairs clinic (it was an appointment to check blood pressure that sort of thing). Right before he was to leave the house to go that appointment, he had a spasm and fell over. After that he was very weak/sore on his left side. He insisted he could make it to his check-up.

The local VA clinic doctor thought it was possible that my husband had had a mini-stroke. Dr. X put in an electronic order to the nearest hospital for a CT scan.

My husband came home and told me what the doctor had said and that he was going onto the local hospital to get checked out. He told me he was fine to get there and I should stay home with the kids.

Several hours later I get a phone call from my husband saying that the local hospital is institutionalizing him. I ask him "WTF" He tells me they haven't listened to a word he has said. He went into the emergency room department and had explained to them that he had been sent for a CT scan and why. Somehow it escalated into them institutionalizing him. When I spoke to them (local hospital) I reiterated to them that he was supposed to be getting a CT scan. They told me part of the reason they were institutionalizing him was that he had been there twice that day (absolutely under no conditions was he actually there twice that day- they later back pedaled on this point) and that he was clearly very agitated.

Nov 16 The local hospital ships him off to another hospital that had a bed for him- almost 5 hours away. I meanwhile called the local Veterans Affairs clinic where my husband had the appointment and recommendation to get the CT scan from and left a lengthy message basically demanding "WTF" in polite terms.

I explain to the second hospital he was only supposed to have gotten a CT scan from the local hospital and that I pretty much have no idea why they're doing what they're doing. I explain about the spasm and the falling over and his weakness.

Nov 17 the second hospital gives him the CT scan finally. However they don't give him the results until late Nov 18th. The results did not show a mini-stroke thankfully. They believe he pinched the nerves that got messed up when he was hit by a car bomb in Iraq and the nerve getting pinched caused him to fall.

NOV 18 The second hospital holds some sort of court hearing where they tell my husband they are keeping him involuntarily for 30 days. The judge at that hearing also states my husband can no longer buy guns in the state of virginia.

NOV 19- We are assuming Veterans Affairs called the second hospital and got them to release him. He called me and I had to drive almost ten hours there and back to pick him up.

The bill from the local hospital arrived yesterday and it's over $1700. We can only imagine what the bill from the second hospital is going to be. Please help they legally abducted him and now they're charging us for the privilege.

Got used/scammed cause I’m a moron. Any advice on how to go about this?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 10:09 AM PST

Not sure what I need to put this under tag wise.

I was jobless and looking for jobs on Indeed when I came across a Front Desk assistant at a software company for phones, computers, etc. I looked up the website for the company, place where it's located, everything looked fine.

Indeed sent me a message from someone working at the company saying send our HR person an email to get a specific time and day for an interview, so I did.

Emailed me a day later saying the position has been filled, but we have a Senior Project Manager ( SPM going forward ) moving from this state to our state who needs a personal assistant for errands he needs to run, would you like me to forward your resume to him, I said yes.

SPM emails me explaining what I would need to do, information about his life, etc. I accept job.

Now this was all sounding great like, too great to be true but I'm pretty young and naive so, I went with it with the help of my parents guiding me as safely as possible.

SPM sends me a check for 3,248 dollars in the mail, says I need to deposit it in my bank account and send him the deposit slip. My dad says I should open a separate account not tied to my personal finances. I go to bank, explain situation, they do it.

First task is to send a "client" of his 200 dollars. Done. Second task is to send 3000 dollars to another "client". Done. Next he said he was going to send me an email for appointments for multiple clients he was meeting when he moved here. That's fine.

Thursday comes, when he was supposed to send me the emails, never did. I text him asking what's up, no response. I check my bank account as a curiosity, and the check bounced.

I am now 3,248 dollars in debt, screwed, and no idea what to do next.

I called my bank and they basically said I have 45 days to pay the 3,248 dollars or it gets sent to collections.

I'm most likely going to the police with all the emails, receipts, whatever they need to possibly do something, but I wanted to ask here first. I'm assuming I'm most likely screwed but..

TL;DR: accepted a job from a dude that was linked to me from a business from indeed, dude sent me check for 3k, check bounced, -3k in my bank account, bank says I have to pay, any options

I got promoted to manager and now my job is asking me to have my clerks work off the clock to avoid over time.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 04:36 AM PST

Hello, I am in Oklahoma. I have been working at a retail company since August of 2018. They have 2 locations in my town, but are based in another state and have stores in a few midwestern states. I believe they have 57 locations total. This company has been great for the most part and my manager that I've had from the beginning was amazing. I absolutely love what I do for people every day as we are very interactive with our customers. I have never had a problem with not being paid correctly and never have I been asked to work off the the clock prior to any of this. Though they are quite slow at hiring new employees when we are short staffed and really don't like to pay for overtime. Recently my manager up and quit because the company was putting too much pressure on her. They asked me to step in and take her position and I agreed. This is my first position as a manager so it's all new to me. That was on Monday Nov 25th. The same day a Regional manager arrived to talk about the situation with me and give some advice and training that I needed plus we hired 2 new people. I was feeling great and I was really excited about the new start. That week was slightly hectic as it was thanksgiving and Black Friday week. One of my clerks also quit during her shift which left us even worse short staffed with the old manager leaving. The regional was only in town for a few hours but he said he would be back next week in person. I got a call from him stating that we needed to make the schedule for the following week Dec 2-7th. This was my first time making the schedule so he was training me to do that. Now I had worked that day from 9am-3pm and he called around 7pm to do the scheduling while I was at home. While we were doing the scheduling, he realized there was almost no way around over time for the clerks at our 2nd location in town. Our new hires still needed to train and could not be on shift without another trained employee there. The regional stated that I needed to tell my clerks for that location that they can only clock in on time. There are only 2 clerks available to work that location. So they would need to work every single day. If they are scheduled let's say 9am-3pm they needed to clock in and out at exactly that time as not go over 40.00 hours. At first I didn't realize the problem with it. With a lot going on around me and the new position it didn't even register that meant they wanted the clerks to still be there 15 minutes early to have the open and fully functioning by the 9am opening time. Then on closing they would have to clean and close the register off the clock. When I told my clerks they all obliged no problem and honestly I don't think they know it is illegal but I know that this is illegal. Cut and dry. Now my employees have been following what the regional asked and only clocking in on the exact shift times. So they are working off the clock and so am I. They have given me an unrealistic work load that I cannot get done on my regular shift with having to do sales still. Which essentially is forcing me to do work off the clock. Since we don't have a manager for the 2nd location yet I am managing both. The regional has asked me to do change runs and putting incoming inventory away off the clock. Yesterday while working I received a message on the company messaging platform. It was from one of the owners of the company, he attached a picture of the 2 employees tight schedule and very close possibility of overtime with a message that said "please make sure they do not hit over time. No exceptions." That message felt incredibly ominous and this is a whole new side of the company then what I've seen. When I left work yesterday I got home and visited the Department of labor website and researched all the information I could on the issue. I called my clerks that were asked to work off the clock and told them to start writing down the time they would normally clock in or out on their shifts and still follow what the company is asking. I will be doing the same. I know I need to file a complaint. I'm going to try and call them today but I work 11-7. I am just asking what other steps can I take or do I need a lawyer for this? Also, since I am their manager and I made their schedules technically, can I get into any legal trouble for anything?

TL;DR My manager quit and they gave me her position, now the regional manager and the owner of the company are having myself and the employees under me work off the clock.

My landlord threw away my belongings

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 04:32 AM PST

I had my belongings stored in a storage locker that is included with my apartment, apparently I did not use the locker that corresponded with my apartment unit, something I was not aware of when I started using the storage area. Recently I found out that my landlord had cut my padlock and thrown most of my belongings away. He said he made no attempt to find out who's stuff it was, he just assumed it belonged to an old tenant and threw it away. Even though most of the stuff he threw out had my name and recent dates on it. Some of the stuff he threw away had monetary value, but a lot of the things were irreplaceable and held a lot of emotional value, things such as old pictures. Was my landlord legally allowed to do this? I live in Maine

Contractor walked away halfway through contract, demanding more money

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 12:27 PM PST

Hi guys, not sure where else to turn to so here's my shot.

    Location: VA

My parents hired a contractor to remodel 4 bathrooms and 2 rooms' drywall, and garage drywall. The contractor has breached the contract several times and has billed us for services that were not rendered.

The contractor's workers were not competent and did not do their jobs properly, which led us to hover around their work and explain how we wanted things done. This obviously did not go well, but whenever they screwed up they were not willing to go back and fix it.

Additionally, the contract states things like "the installation of dust barriers" etc and has a price next to it. He is BILLING US for barriers that were not even installed during the work.

The final straw: They started remodeling a bathroom (we're adding a full bath in the powder room) WITHOUT a permit. They have already put up some dry wall on it. We have constantly been after our contractor to apply for the permit and he lied to us multiple times saying he will file it, he has already filed, etc etc. Now the county inspector says the workers may have demolished a weight bearing wall and we just remove some of the dry wall so they can even inspect it. When we wanted a licensed plumber, the contractor said "you really gonna pay $1k JUST because xyz has a license?!!!" and WALKED OUT OF THE HOUSE.

THEY said they had enough of US because we want our house to be remodeled properly according to county code, and they were cutting every possible corner.

They emailed us saying that we have to pay them $4k more until they can even come in to do more work/finish the job.

We're obviously at a loss here and don't know what to do. Can we file a report or anything? My mother needs a bathroom on the main floor as she cant climb the stairs 10x a day.

TLDR; Contractor walked out on us for bathroom/house remodeling halfway thru the contract, we paid them about 35% already. Now they want us to pay up to 60% to finish the house, but a lot of these services were NOT rendered, and this is NOT an advance, they state they've done it.

Sorry if the post was wordy, my head's a mess. (and so is the house)

Executor of my Dads will squatting in house owned by 4 people that want to sell property

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 03:42 AM PST

6 years ago my Dad left his property to his 3 sons plus a friend, 4 people total. The judgement order of possession was issued that each person has 1/4 stake in property. The friend was already living there when he passed away and was also made executor. It was agreed the property would be sold as that was what my Dad was actively doing before passing. The value of the property is that it is zoned commercial now with prime frontage access to the main road. The house has no value as its old and dilapidated. So after 6 years the 3 brothers says its time to move on and demo the house because its probably hindering a sale, along with overgrown vegetation. Executor does not want to move, and why would heas its rent free living! So my question is, we want to hire a contractor to demo the house but executor wont leave. How do we make him get out? Its 3 against 1. I've offered to help move etc, no luck. So he may be able to block a contractor, but what about the other 3 owners? As co-owners, if we show up with sledgehammers and chainsaws, can he stop us as long as we dont infringe on his personal belongings? It's really perplexing because he would benefit from the sale for 25% as well, but he is poor white trash so he doesn't budge. Any ideas or legal advice is appreciated!

    Missing Amazon Package

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 10:50 AM PST

I ordered a $700 dollar item off of Amazon. The package stated it was delivered on 12/4/19 at 7 PM, however I had been home since 5 PM and never heard a knock on the door or doorbell. I received a phone notification about an hour later stating that item was delivered, and checked all around my house, and neighbor's houses but could not find the item.

I called Amazon and reported to them that I had not received the item but it had said delivered. The first day I called they said the package would be delivered Thursday. I called back Thursday and now are saying the time was delivered as stated on Wednesday.

They are now launching a 3 day investigation. Is there anything else I should do ? Should I file a police report? I have browsed reddit and seen both sides where Amazon is very helpful or quite the opposite.

I have about 65 orders on my account in the last year and this is the first time I had to report a package missing.

Shelter I was working in wouldn’t treat bed bugs- now I have them at home and am facing eviction TX.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 09:34 AM PST

I was working in a drug recovery home where we have a large population of homeless people coming in and out. As a mental health tech, my job was very hands on going through their beds looking for contraband and touching their clothing. I was never made aware of the risks or previous infestations the home had dealt with. One day recently the clients began reporting bed bug sightings and bites. The CEO who runs the organization was alerted several times by our maintenance manager that they needed to fumigate immediately, the CEO said it wasn't that big of a deal and told everyone to just wash their clothes. Me and the other employees became distressed as the problem got worse and the CEO was cutting as many corners as possible to avoid the cost of fumigation. I took every precaution I could to stay away from bedding and clothing, and to keep off the floors where they slept. I asked several times if they could help me pay for mattress covers and preventative chemicals, things i could not afford making $11 an hour. They did not. One day, they showed up in our apartment. I had to immediately quit my job. Our lease has an addendum that if we introduced bed bugs to the complex we could be evicted. So we called in the maintenance manager from the home i was working in and he came over and told us everything we had to do. We did everything. Absolutely everything. Two weeks later, the bugs are back and even worse. They are even inside of my car. We have already thrown away so much. We have already lost so much time and money, and the problem is only looming. We further found out that the complex states if we attempted to treat the problem ourselves we would be evicted no question. The cost to treat this is growing and we are in very real danger of losing everything, including our home AND having our first eviction on record. The repercussions are unimaginable. We need to help to know what legal protection we have, what the organization I was working for could be responsible for, should we contact a lawyer or would that lawyer alert the complex?

Very terrified right now. Any advice would help.

DHS called me for the third time this year about my daughter and her mother.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 07:05 AM PST

    D=Daughter M= Mother of Daughter

Back story. I'm 21, and my daughter is 3, we had her in high school and I fought for rights a couple times and I get visitation and 2 video calls a week since she (D and M) live across the country.

I live in Iowa M and D live in NM.

Over the past year, I've gotten 3 phone calls from DHS saying they were doing an investigation into alleged child neglect and possibly abuse. This last call was yesterday and it sounds like the most serious. They want to do a "Family Conference" and want DHS to come to my house and do a home inspection. They asked me about my work, my parents work (I live with them), if I were to take D, and multiple other questions about D staying here. But they never specified what happened to begin an investigation, which scares the hell out of me.

4 days ago I got an ubrupt email from M saying D is coming in a couple days and that I can have her for a couple weeks, so I have D right now here in Iowa.

I'm asking for advice on what a family conference is, what questions I need to ask DHS, do I need to keep D here until the investigation is over, and if there is any legal things I need to know in advance? I'm Honestly scared due to them hesitating on why the began an investigation and what they know.

EDIT: Another thing, does anyone else think that this is extremely strange and how bad does this sound?

Landlord making me pay for HOA mandated electrical inspection [CA]

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 11:28 AM PST

Hi folks, I'm a tenant renting a townhome with 2 other roommates in CA. I recently got an electric vehicle which I'm charging in the garage. I didn't get any special charger installed - I'm simply using the regular wall outlet to slow charge the vehicle overnight (110v 15a circuit).

Out of the blue several months after I've had the car our landlord forwards us a letter from the HOA stating that they suspect the vehicle might be causing power outages in the building and would like our landlord to have an electrician come out to verify that it is all good and I am okay to be charging in the garage. Our landlord is requesting that I pay for this inspection - even though the letter is addressed to him. I originally declined and said it's his responsibility to maintain his own electrical infrastructure - I don't own the property and my car uses the same amount of electricity as a microwave.

He forwarded my sentiments to the HOA and now the HOA has written another more aggressive letter (again addressed to the landlord, not me) asking that he get it inspected, evaluate the power supply, add HOA to homeowners insurance, etc or else they will call a hearing to fine. Once again the landlord expects me to bear the cost of the electrical inspection. My question is two-fold: Is the landlord allowed to put that cost on me? Is the HOA allowed to even mandate something like this?

Thanks in advance for the help!

The state is trying to take my father's house.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 01:24 PM PST

So this is my first post ever. Not sure what kind of details are important. Basically my grandmother passed away a couple months ago. She was on Medicare and was in a nursing home when she passed. The state has decided that when she passed, they want to try to take her house as repayment for the costs associated with her care. My father has been on the deed for the house in question for 25 years. The way I understand it is they are going to look back to see if there's been any changes to the deed in the last 5 years. Unfortunately, 4 years ago, my aunt also decided she wanted to be on the deed and was added to it. Can the fact that my aunt was added to the deed 4 years ago really invalidate that my father has been for the last 25 years, thus resulting in the state taking the house as they claim? This is in Michigan btw.

    Thank you all in advance.

(TX) My landlord has sent his strange nephew to perform construction on the garage unit. Today I discovered 2 guitars missing from the adjacent room. I don't want this man back on my property.

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 08:32 PM PST

The landlord requested he needed to knockout three walls and repair the roof of the garage unit. He sent one man to do it all, and is also using him to repair a plumbing problem in the unit (It has a bathroom). The landlord told me this nephew recently was homeless and I quote "Down on his luck", and apparently sleeping on someones floor. Today after the worker left, I went into the personal room of the garage unit to discover 2 of our guitars missing. I confronted them over the phone and they swear he did not take it, and the landlord is believing his nephews story, but I have filed a police report anyway. He had never told me beforehand that he would be sending the weird nephew to do all the repair work, and I now feel this person is dangerous.

TL;DR My question is how do I go about telling the landlord that he must send professional qualified people to repair the building and plumbing, and that the weirdo is not allowed back under any circumstance? The city is Corpus Christi if that helps.

(MN) Daycare refusing service while still requiring payments

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 08:39 AM PST

Just started having issues with daycare this week. It is a home and not a center. We have been clients since October. Previously, we had probably two days where provider mentioned that our infant was "irritable," one day we picked up early. It was not requested, but we felt sort of obligated from tone of text messages. Upon returning home, did not have any issues. Only strange thing is that infant does not usually have soiled diapers there.

Earlier this week, provider said infant was not eating and crying excessively, and asked if we had any issues. We had not, picked up as normal, infant ate fine at home and did not have any issues. Next day, we did not work so had infant at home, and provider was texting on and off all day saying that our infant crying was disrupting other children and we needed to figure this out.

Next day of service, started texting right away saying infant was not eating and crying, and giving provider a migraine. Told us infant was napping, and that if it did not eat, we would have to come pick up. Soon told us to pick up and asked us to show us how we fed infant. Went to provider, and infant was making noises we had not heard before, and are not sure why this is happening.

Provider texted a few hours later and told us we could not bring infant in for care. We said we were going to doctor that night, provider said to keep her updated. For some reason, provider was insistent about infant seeing a "specialist" rather than pediatrician, which was not an option with such short notice. Doctor said infant looked and sounded good, no ear infection or other issues. Let provider know and they said they were "not convinced."

Let us know we still needed to drop off payment for next week this morning, as per contract. I said that was fine, but wondered how much it would be since we had to pick up, then were told we couldn't bring infant in and had to miss work. They said, per contract, it was still full payments. I said I was concerned about being able to afford full care while being called away and told to miss work, and that I need to know a game plan for next week then. They replied it was "part of being a parent."

That was the end of conversation so far. Contract states they can send them home for being sick, ill, contagious, etc. Also states that they can terminate contract at any time for any reason, but we need 4 weeks' notice, and that we are unable to terminate service in December. I would assume this is because of all the holidays in the month?

I am wondering about any recourse, or perhaps if a certain number of denials or service would constitute a termination of contract? Something similar to employers considering a no-call no-show a voluntary termination. This situation really came out of nowhere, and we feel taken advantage of since we rely on care.

EDIT: Should have mentioned initially that provider allows for "sick days" for parents and children that are half paid, which was the reason I had asked about the payment for the following week. This is only offered after 6 months of care, though.
