    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Options Trading Thursday - Dec 05, 2019

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 12:06 AM PST

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on stock options, but if options aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against options here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Required info to start understanding options:

    • Call option Investopedia video basically a call option allows you to buy 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to buy
    • Put option Investopedia video a put option allows you to sell 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to sell

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

Call option - Put option - Exercising an option - Strike price - ITM - OTM - ATM - Long options - Short options - Combo - Debit - Credit or Premium - Covered call - Naked - Debit call spread - Credit call spread - Strangle - Iron condor - Vertical debit spreads - Iron Fly

If you have a basic question, for example "what is delta," then google "investopedia delta" and click the investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

Tips for deploying cash during such a growth period

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 06:17 PM PST

This is a weird issue but I can't seem to find a good company to invest in. I have around 40% of my intended investment capital utilized, resulting in a concerning amount of unused cash. I'm young and understand that I should be able to take more risk but I can't justify the prices that equity currently sits at. I'm looking for potential alternatives that offer higher yield at slightly higher risk.

Why isn't this stock more expensive?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 10:59 AM PST

NYSE:VLT It's some kind of Invesco fund, with a yield of over 8%. Ex dividend is in a few days and there's been no anticipation fueled growth. I looked at its history and it seems very consistent. No growth but it's not -97% over the last 3 years like most relatively unknown stocks with a huge yield. It sits at around 0% growth.

Why isn't the price driving up? Im not advertising or anything I'm just getting suspicious since if it was really a good deal it would probably be snapped up quicker. Maybe you can help me see what I'm missing!

    BARC.L at a bargain price?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 02:11 PM PST

After a good few months researching into Value Investing (Benjamin Graham etc.), I feel as though I have learned a lot about the prospect of finding good shares at bargain prices.

Here is one that caught my eye late this evening and I would like to know what you think of it.

I don't have any interest in investing in stocks & shares for the foreseeable future; more a complex problem I'm trying to solve and find an answer to.

    *Statistics according to Yahoo Finance*

    Ticker: BARC.L

    Previous close: 167.16

    52week High/Low: 131.04 - 176.19

    P/E ratio (ttm): 16.55

    Price/Book: 43.49%

    EPS (ttm): 10.10

If I have missed out a "crucial metric" here, please do tell me. It's more than likely that I simply haven't learned about that metric, so please tell me why you think it's important to understand.

I am very new to all of this and very keen to learn more with your help!

    Morgan Stanley

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 11:26 AM PST

I got into MS back in November and plan on playing this long. It's yielding at 2.87% with a 40% 5-year growth. In what ways to do you compare other banks to ones like Morgan Stanley when calculating its growth.

Company being bought out? What do I do?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 02:03 PM PST

Hey everyone. Just wanted to get some advice here as I'm trying to get a grasp on what my next move should be. I'm still learning about this world and I've never held a position in a company that was (apparently) being bought out.

I have some shares in TD Ameritrade that I had purchased at apporx. $38 about a month and half ago. Recent news that the company is being out buy Charles Schwab and the prices has gone up to about $52. A 32% gain in just a month.

I'm not entirely sure if I should sell this now and take the quick gain or hold on to it?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Teva

Any thoughts on this stock? Seems as though 5-10 years from now buying this stock at the $8-$11 range could be an absolute steal. Once these law suits are over I think the stock will continue to bounce back.

    Holiday Investments

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 11:55 AM PST

I am in an econ course with a stock project where we get $100,000 to invest on 'Wall Street Survivor' over a couple of months. I am wondering what the best investments are over the holiday season, and also the best strategy for earning the most money by March.

Do you think FAANG will outperform s&p 500 in 2020's?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 11:54 AM PST

I am not asking which is the better investment, because the s&p is based on risk. But which do you think will have the better returns next decade?

    Long term capital tax gain

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 06:13 AM PST

I was wondering when it starts and when it ends. For instance, I buy a stock in November 2016. I keeping buying the same stock through out the year, stop buying in November 2017, and go to sell it for a gain in October 2017. Does the tax take effect on when I originally bought the stock (November 2016 so long term) or when I last contributed to the stock (short term) even though I have been buying more of the same stock for the whole year?

Suddenly you have 5k, and you can only invest it in one stock for about 8 months...

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 09:58 AM PST

I've allotted about 5k for a vacation fund next year, and I'm going to do a foolish thing, and throw it all into ONE stock until about early August. Where upon it will ALL be pulled out.
Now, you're already getting ready start typing "excuse me sir but this is extremely stupid because" and i'm going to have to stop you right there. We're gonna yadda yadda over all of that. Any lectures on how i'm an idiot, and why, will be 100% ignored.

Now, what stock would YOU put all of it in, if you were forced into the same situation? Yes, yes, we all know you're smarter than that, but if you were forced into it, what would you choose? Right now my eyes are on APPS or LUNA.

    Index funds question.

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 09:44 AM PST

Im a bit new to investing and have been doing quite a bit of research on the stock market and how it works in order to set myself up for later in life. I am constantly seeing recommendations to buy index funds, that index funds can not be beat even by professional investors. I see that index funds have very little risk to them, that they increase consistently over the course of several years. But, why can't they be beat? During those years if one were to invest in companies that see significant growth over a shorter period of time. Wouldn't that be more effective than an index fund? If someone invested into Netflix for example, a company which has grown by 500% in the past 5 years, I would think they have beat index funds by a very large amount. If someone could explain, that would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Anyone know what happens to VIA/VIAB/CBS shares?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 09:43 AM PST

Viacom and CBS completed their merger yesterday, and the combined company is trading under VIAC today. I had VIAB shares in my brokerage acct, but when I looked today it says " VIACOM INC NEW CL B * EXCHANGE FOR 0.596250 SHARES OF CUSIP" in place of my former VIAB position, at a daily %change of 0.00%. Why don't I have VIAC shares yet? The ticker is trading today already, and I am also confused as to what share price I'll be swapped in at. Does anyone know what's going on with old VIA/VIAB/CBS shares? I have never held a stock through a merger before, so this is new to me.

    Hi everyone!

I'm planning to start investing in stocks but I am completely new to it and rather clueless too :///

I've done some research here and there but I'm still a bit confused: (I am based in Hong Kong / China)

How do I get started // How do stocks work?

How do I know what to invest in?

When do I know it's the right time to sell?

What do I need to look out for?

Sorry, I know that's a lot of questions but any help would be really really appreciated! Many thanks everyone :)

    Unusually high gain in SNDX

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 08:04 AM PST

I am a relatively young, hands off investor, but today I checked and one of my holdings, SNDX, is up 13% at the time of writing this. Is there any reason why? Should I buy more, sell off, or hold? Any help would be appreciated.
