    Tips for a Young Investor.

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:52 AM PST

    Hello everyone,

I am 22 years old and have recently opened up a self directed TFSA. I am currently using the TFSA to save for a house so I can move out within the next 5 years.

I have read a couple books on investing and have watched youtube videos as well as browsing this sub.

Currently I have only invested in Canadian banks but am looking at other kinds of stocks to diversify my portfolio. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you very much, I appreciate your time.

Bonus question: If I just opened a TFSA at 22 years old how much can I contribute to my TFSA at this point in time (In Canada).

Controversial: Why you should NOT diversify your portfolio

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 11:10 AM PST

Diversification of a portfolio has been preached by many for a long time. Sure, you may be taking less risk, but you will miss out on a lot of return. Warren Buffet said diversifying doesn't make sense for people who know what they are doing. He said if he wanted to preserve his wealth for his family over the next 30 years, he would pick 3 companies instead of 50 different ones. "Put all you eggs in one basket and watch the basket closely"

The general rule of a concentrated portfolio goes like this:

    $5000-$10000 1 stock $10000-$50000 1-2 stocks $50000-$75000 1-3 stocks $100000 2-4 stocks and so on...

What are is your opinion on this strategy?

What are some stocks that saw a huge single day drop due to public outrage?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 08:50 PM PST

Things like the Poleton bike, Tesla after Elon was on JRE, and Nike after the Kaepernick Ad. I find it interesting to see how long it takes for things to bounce back after a huge debacle, and i'm looking for more things to look into.

    AMD P/E ratio

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:10 AM PST

Why do people keep buying AMD when it's PE is extremely high(197)?? I'm new to stocks but my understanding is that it would make AMD a really unattractive stock to buy, yet it's value keeps increasing. Why is that?

Does anybody who's trying to pick undervalued stocks find that it's easier to handle them going down than up

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 01:14 PM PST

This year I started setting aside a small amount of my savings to pick stocks with in a separate account. I know I'm unlikely to beat the market but it's fun and all. I'm not actively trading, just doing a few hours of research each week and buying positions in stocks that seem to be undervalued and planning to hold for the long term.

I've found that when I initiate a position in a stock that stays flats or goes down it doesn't bother me too much. I bought the stock because I felt it was undervalued in the short-term and a good value to buy. So assuming there hasn't been a structural change to my investment thesis (which I'm trying to review about quarterly), I just shrug and DCA downwards thinking I get to pick up more shares at an even better discount.

On the other hand when the stocks goes up, DCAing feels bad because I'm not getting as good of value as the position I've already entered. Psychologically I don't like seeing my overall cost basis going up. Plus I know I'm not smart enough to be picking exact values of any of these stocks so who's to say whether my thesis has played out?

So for example when I'm down 15% on $WMB I add to that position, but when I'm up 40% on CVS I just hold that position. Stepping back from that it feels wrong to be doubling down on the losers and leaving the winners untouched - you'd probably want to do the opposite. But I also don't want to be spooked by short-term dips or rises, so...

Anybody else feel like they have this issue or have any advice?

What to do with a rights offering

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 11:14 AM PST

A stock I own ($SELF) has issued a rights offering entitling me to buy shares at $4.18 per share. Based on my current position size (120 shares) I could buy about 44 additional shares through the offering. But the stock price is currently trading very close to that range - $4.19 at the moment - and my broker apparently charges a $30 fee to exercise through the offering, whereas I could trade through the regular market at no charge. If I decide I want to add to my position, is there any reason why I should go through the offering instead of buying shares on the market?

What does a Calls Sweep tend to tell a long-position trader?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 02:04 PM PST

I'm currently in a long position in Twilio. Obviously, I'm interested in hearing good news for it. Never got into trading options. Maybe one day.

When an options alert comes out and says something like "Twilio Option Alert: Fri $105 Calls Sweep (2) near the Ask: 1008 @ $0.381 vs 499 OI; Ref=$100.37", it's kind of a big "WTF?"

Does it mean some big trader is banking on the stock to be at $105 within a certain span of time?

What’s the highest percentage return you’ve ever made on a share / call etc?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 04:58 PM PST

I'm kinda bored so what's the highest percent return you guys have ever made trading? Personally for me I made a 100% return in under a week on Clovis oncology ( $CLVS) a few weeks ago when it was $8 a share then shot up to 16 in a week. I only had 25 shares but my equity for it went from around 125$ to 250$ which was pretty nice. Share your stories I'm interested if anyone has ever hit the lottery when they were trading. Post pics if you got em.

Facebook Was Mystery Firm Bidding Against Google To Buy Fitbit

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 01:30 PM PST

Facebook is the mystery "Party A" revealed in an SEC filing that bid several times to acquire health wearables maker Fitbit, including a best and final offer of $7.30 per share.

Google announced its intentions to acquire Fitbit on Nov. 1 for about $2.1 billion in cash, or $7.35 per share. Facebook views the sale process as complete and doesn't plan to bid again now that Google has agreed to the purchase, one of the people said.

According to the filing, Fitbit CEO James Park had dinner with "the chief executive officer of Party A" on June 11, 2019, to discuss the wearables technology landscape. That person would be Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, sources said. Park and other members of Fitbit's senior management had dinner with Zuckerberg again on July 2, the filing said. Zuckerberg and Park met once more in September, according to the filing.

    Selling after a rally?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 12:43 PM PST

I've invested in a particular stock that had a nice 14% rally today.

Since when I started trading, I've noticed that a stock will often dip at some point after a strong rally as others take profits.

Any suggestions or rules of thumb for selling after a rally? I'd like to think this stock will likely fall tomorrow in response, but that's speculation.

LULU needs to beat margins for further near term upside

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 12:42 PM PST

$LULU's success should sustain much longer than the fashion trend of yoga pants replacing jeans. The future of apparel is athletic, and LULU is amongst a handful of brands well positioned to capture the fundamental shift in consumer lifestyles to focus more on health/wellness and dress more casually. But with the stock up almost 90% YTD, near term expectations are not low, pricing in same-store-sales growth of high-teens for Q3, and low teens for Q4. LULU must also beat on margins to see further near term upside for the stock. https://street-guru.com/opinion/lulu_the-future-of-apparel-is-athletic_20191209_12/

Does anyone find it strange that UBER never releases any positive news / PR?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 12:42 PM PST

This company and their management confuses me.

There have been about 100 negative pieces of news in the last two months about UBER. Every few days, there is a new negative headline (or many).

Normally I would imagine management would try to release something positive in that process, to keep the narrative from crumbling completely - but Dara and his team are absolutely silent.

I haven't really ever seen anything like it before.

CNBC: "Cash from selling CBS’ New York headquarters may be used in stock buyback, ViacomCBS CEO says"

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 12:32 PM PST

Article: Cash from selling CBS' New York headquarters may be used in stock buyback, ViacomCBS CEO says [CNBC]

Money from a potential sale of CBS' New York City headquarters may be used to repurchase shares, ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakish told CNBC on Monday.

In an interview with CNBC's David Faber, Bakish declined to estimate what ViacomCBS believed the 38-story modernist granite building known as Block Rock was worth.

"We have some ideas. I don't want to put it out there but it's very material," said Bakish, who had earlier announced sale plans at an investor conference. "We believe we can... take that cash, flow it through our waterfall of how we use cash, including potentially using it for buyback."

Prior to their merger closing last week, both CBS and Viacom had suspended their buyback programs, Bakish said. But a roughly $2.5 billion buyback program for which CBS had been granted previous authorization will be restarted, he said.

Anyone else think it is a good idea for any corporation to perform a buyback of its own stock, regardless if there is any recent history of a merger or not?

    Ring ownership of public company

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 12:01 PM PST

If two companies with roughly the same market cap want to merge or buy the other company and they both acquire a majority of the other company, who owns the resulting company, who decides which people sit on the board? The remaining minority shareholders? I think Porsche and VW have almost something like that.

Can someone PLEASE explain my company's Stock Option plan to me

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 11:58 AM PST

So I was recently granted stock options at my company. I was granted 1,350 options at a price of $24.51. These can be vested in 450 chunks over three years. It says my total portfolio value is $4,711.50.

    My question is:

    1. How many shares is that in total, is it 1350?
    2. Does this mean I have to pay 24.51 x 450 each year in order to get the shares?
    3. Where did the value of $4,711.50 come from?

    Thanks

Is it bad to be in it for the dividends?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 11:58 AM PST

So I'm running a bunch of stocks that pay dividends monthly/quarterly and reinvesting the gains I get. Is this a bad idea, or is it safer just staying and holding onto the growers I have for years on end?

I'm thinking with enough invested I can eventually get quite a bit from dividends and use it for something other than beer money.

Any ideas that I can do this right?
