My first full time year in lawn care - revenue, expenses, profit, investment

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 06:35 AM PST

I started a lawn care company (The Lawn Squad) in 2017 while a college student pursuing my degree IU in Bloomington, indiana. 2017 was slow and I didn't take it very seriously but I had a website and a GMB location and a lot of my competitors didn't. I got a little bit more serious in 2018 but still stopped answering the phone and chasing new leads half way through the year because I got overloaded with school work.

2017: $11,638 in revenue and $4,629 in expenses for a profit of $7,009 on a commitment of only about 165 hours throughout the year ($42 per hour)

2018: $39,253 in revenue and $6,310 in expenses for $32,942 in profit on a commitment of about 800 hours ($41 per hour). I ended 2018 with 30 recurring customers.

    Initial Investment

Early on I used the family truck and mower to do some jobs. I put the majority of the profits back into the business in both 2017 and 2018 and grew slowly while purchasing used equipment. Here is the overview of what I acquired - all in cash with no debt.

    Equipment overview:

    • 2009 Ford F-150 – 7/1/18 – 95,000 miles – $8,000 + $3,000 transmission in July 2019 – $11,000 total
    • 36″ 2016 Gravely Pro-Stance Mower – $5,000
    • 60″ 2016 Gravely Pro-Turn 260 – $8,000
    • 12′ open trailer – $2,000
    • Toro Self Propelled Residential mower – $250
    • Used 100 Gallon Dual Tank Sprayer – $400 + $100 in repairs
    • Stihl Weed Eaters, Blowers, Misc – $1,000

    Total Investment – $27,750

    2019 customer numbers and financials

I ended 2019 with 55 lawn care clients and 20 weed control and fertilization clients in Bloomington for a total of 75 customers. I got the weed control applicators permit in March of this year and it was a great decision.

I sent out 320 job quotes and 36% accepted my proposals. I worked 1,940 hours over 32 weeks for 54 hours per week (5 admin, 2 quoting, 47 on the truck).

    Total Revenue: $106,200

    Expenses:

    • Labor: $9,000 / 28% of total expenses (hired part time employee who worked 22 hours a week for most of the season)
    • Landscaping supplies: $5,980 / 18%
    • Repairs / Maintenance: $4,250 / 13%
    • Weed Control Supplies: $3,860 / 12%
    • Fuel: $2,990 / 9%
    • Wear and Tear / Depreciation: $2,100 / 6%
    • Jobber Software: $1,548 / 5%
    • Insurance (WC, GL, Auto): $1,200 / 4%
    • Equipment Rentals: $600 / 2%
    • Dumping (leaves, brush): $377 / 1%
    • Clothing: $450 / 1%

    Total expenses: $32,355

    Total Profit: $73,645

Hours worked by owner: 1,940 (54/wk for 32 weeks)

    Profit per hour worked: $37.96

If I hired a competent crew leader for $16/hr the total payroll liability after workers compensation and payroll taxes would be about $20/hr.

Assuming the employee is 20% slower than me at doing the work the total hours worked by that employee would have been 2,328 (1,940 x 1.2). Multiply that by the $20 / hr liability and the expense would have been $46,560.

If you add that expense to the profit and loss statement my profit goes from $73,645 to $27,085.

But this is what I plan to do next year so I can focus on high value work like bidding jobs and doing larger landscaping projects and finding weed control customers. This is a good exercise to know if I'm charging enough to build a scalable business. I plan to raise my prices on most of my customers this next season.

    Strategy and Marketing

From day 1 I haven't paid for marketing and I've gotten the majority of this customers from my Google My Business location in Bloomington. Sales and marketing have been my weakest link since day 1 but I have never needed to do those things to grow my business.

I got a few early clients to leave 5 star reviews and that has helped me rank. Bloomington has a population of less than 100,000 so it wasn't extremely competitive. My GMB location has brought me 90% of my customers and referrals and word of mouth have brought 10%.

My biggest advantage is that I turn quotes around quickly using Jobber and can look at Google Maps and measure the property so I don't have to drive around looking at places to quote them. I've found that every hour I let pass before sending a quote the odds decrease drastically of securing the job.

    Plans for 2020

FIRE THE BAD CUSTOMERS. 20% of my customers cause me all my headaches.

I have to recruit and hire a good employee. I also need to learn spanish.

I need to purchase another truck and trailer so I plan to shop in the 5-10 year old range and try to get a reliable truck under $10,000.

Marketing, sales and SEO will take a priority spot because right now I'm reliant on the Google My Business location too much. I plan to do some customer appreciation by sending thank you notes out to my clients before Christmas.

Hope this helps somebody out there! BTW my brother is Nick (u/sweatystartup) and I hang out over in r/sweatystartup. I'm a fan of that place.

Do you ever have days where you just have no fight in you?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 08:27 AM PST

I've had a really productive 2 weeks, however I've woken up today and got nothing done. I have felt empty and really zoned out. This then feels worse as I start to feel guilty for not doing anything.

I then log onto social media (as I'm not doing anything else) and their are loads of people talking about 16 hours hustling and how they are making their dreams work and again I just feel like I'm not good enough. I just watched a video of some tech guy who lived in a cupboard for 3 months... While in struggling to tick off tasks on my lists.

Do I want it enough if I can't force myself to put the work in every single day?

“Create a product or service that solves a problem.”

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 11:12 AM PST

It seems as though every book, podcast, blog post, etc. on startups always says to create something that solves a problem. I believe that this is a valuable concept, but I am not convinced it should be taken as gospel.

The reason I say this is because of all the successful companies that do not inherently solve a consumer problem. An extremely valuable company such as LEGO doesn't seem to solve a problem, but maybe they do? Maybe there is a subsurface problem that I cannot see that makes them successful. Like I said, I understand that the easiest way to make sales is by making something they need rather than something they just want. Yet, there seem to be plenty of successful businesses around that don't solve a problem, at least not an obvious one. I would love to have a conversation about this topic with whoever wants to. Thanks!

I reach 500,000+ A week just from instagram what should I do next?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 03:36 PM PST

I have built a page that averages 500,000+ people reached and has built me so many connections with influencers and celebrities but I am not sure what to do with it. Most people want to buy my page or have me promote something dropshipped from china which is not what I am interested in. I would like to help other people out and maybe do more Freelance Social Media Marketing. Since my page is in a very specific niche and I am not interested in turning it into a page filled with ads and want to keep it classy and ethical. I also want to spend more time producing content so I have to learn how to either make profit from it or use the experience and connections to move to other things.

UPDATE: Please DM me if you think you can help. I am in the Space/Science Niche

UPDATE 2: Thank you so much to all the great advice and help from so many people. If you need help with Social Media Marketing I am more than happy to help. I can share my user Privately only for people who are serious about what they do. I did not create this page to make money and I want to stay true to it's original purpose. If you are trying to get into entrepreneurship just to make money then I won't be able to help much because it's way more complex and not just an easy out to a 9-5. The entire reason my page has grown successfully is because I focused on building meaningful relationships with my audience vs getting the most follows. I have been working on this project since 2012 and sending 1000's of DM's and spending countless hours connecting with people. People tend to forget the value in this since everything has move to digital. When someone goes to your social media page you should be creating a unique experience that connects with the individual and leaves them wanting to come back to your page specifically. If you just offer a generic page with no real value then you wont have success in growing a long term business/page.

We reached 500 users in only 2 months

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 11:39 AM PST

Today marks the day that we reached 500 users after launching only about 2 1/2 months ago. After personally being involved in a lot of unsuccessful startups in the past, it's really nice to have a product that has a steady stream of growth.

We haven't spent anything of significance on marketing, everything has been organic. We are so grateful to the communities (big and small) that have helped us so far. If it weren't for you, we would only have a small fraction of the users we have today.

Thank you! We are truly honored.

Problematic employee who now cannot be fired.

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:34 AM PST

Hello, I am looking for some advice and would appreciate whatever you can offer.

Let me preface this by saying that I have been trying to alter my company culture for sometime now. I want it to be a place people love working at. So far, it's been about a 3 year process to make it so. Originally, it was a very high-pace and cut- through place to work. So, of course, it's taking time to alter that, I completely understand that. Every employee I have (10 people) have all been on board with the new changes (company meetings with more positive and productive tones, departments more constructively approaching issues, accountability, hanging out outside of work, and really just being more positive in the workplace, giving more compliments to each other, ect.)

We have a much older employee who is very recalcitrant and refuses to implement any change. He has worked with us for about 5 years and his attitude has gotten worse every year. He beings down other employees, so much so that they will avoid his department. That means the orders do not ship in time or issues with products are not addressed because no one wants to bring it up. Production has slowed and no one wants to work with him or be around him. We have tried to talk to him and tell him WHY we are implementing change and the issues we have with him along with what he is doing well. None of it is well received and pretty much shrugged off. We have tried asking what we can do to help him and he says he has no issues. He has resisted changes since the very start. We have tried to get him to grow with us but he still will not alter his ways. During company meetings he is sarcastic and when asked for feedback on what we should change for him, he is very rude and not constructive. It's gotten to the point where he will openly curse at management and is taking random sick days off, slowing down production in his department, not working with others, and overall just being callous. Without saying too much details about his personal life, we have had numerous issues with getting him paid. He has been known to abuse the system which we found out months into hiring him. There are numerous other issues posed by this one employee.

I believe that the company culture of any place can be brought down by one individual. We unanimously decided we had to fire him. We were taking precautions by outsourcing various items as not to hinder production and apparently not subtly enough, because he filed for workers comp and I was advised that firing him now can result in a plethora of issues. He can state that he was let go due to his "injury". We have evidence that it is a preexisting injury as he had complained about it a few years back. We had the employees working with him document the complaint and he told them it happened at his house. He only claimed this injury because he saw that we were going to fire him. How can we go about this matter? Any advice would be appreciated.

TL;DR: Employee was about to be fired in the upcoming weeks and decided to file for workers comp making it very difficult to fire him. Thank you.

    How to start making connections?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:20 AM PST

Basically the title. As an example:

Let's say i have a product idea that i want to have manufactured - how can i find one? How do i know how to trust, which platforms are there that could help me? Maybe some of you who had similar questions have some tips for me?

And not only a physical product - let's say i have some code that i want to share, or i'm looking for people with the same passion, how can i find them? How did you do it? What pitfalls can you advise me to not fall into?

I'm already a little bit at it, (as for the code part, i'm asking and trying to answer questions on stackoverflow for example) and giving it some effort. But i want to do more. So before doing absolutely and doing unproductive stuff just to distract myself from the guiltiness of procrastinating, i thought i post this.

Thank you in advance, and please don't keep yourself back. I'm ready to face some harsh truths.

I want to start making money without having to get job, and I have full blown support from my parents. I don't exactly have great social skill to make sales in person. So far I've been thinking of starting an online business, selling cheap geek merch on different websites and apps. I have like a few hundred dollars saved, and would like to start investing it. For me geek merch seems smart, since I already know some suppliers that sell cheap merch. And I've been in stores like hot topic, and game stop, where merch is overpriced. I've seen around school some people having like tons of accessories on their backpack, and seen how some people's room is filled with plushies. Can I get anyone's opinion? Any other market to look at for financial gain?

Need help understanding business license IDs, reseller/resale licenses, and sales tax ID numbers

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 01:42 PM PST

Hey all, I'm sorry for how amateur this post will probably sound, but I am very confused by all of this. I'm a single girl who has never opened a business before but I have done a ton of research and have been setting up a Shopify store to sell wholesale gardening products, dropship products, craft projects, live plants etc and am very confused about what licenses and such I need to acquire. I am from Missouri. My main questions are this:

Is a business license the same thing as a sales tax ID? Are they different? Do I need both? Do I also need a reseller/resale license to sell wholesale, or will a business license cover that? I am also selling live moss; do I need a specific permit to sell this plant to other states?

Thanks for any help you can provide, or any guides you can give me!

Sharing a little motivational trick that has worked for me

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 09:45 AM PST

Long story short, I was an online Spanish teacher for about 12 years, 3 years ago I quit to focus 100% on digital marketing, blogging, affiliate, SEO, lead gen, web design, etc yet I kept one of my students, ONLY ONE, and I strategically scheduled him to take lessons every Monday to Friday with me online for half an hour at 7 am.

Because I know he's never late, nor would he miss class, this forces me to get up in the morning, get ready, turn on the computer, prepare a short class, and at 7.30 when the class is done, I'm already pumped and full of energy to be in my most productive state for my "real" job, because of being forced to be productive the first half an hour of the day.

I think many people here could do the same if you're lacking motivation or find it hard to get started in the morning, do something that's not related to your real job but still requires discipline, responsibility, and structure.

    A Good Friend

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 01:07 PM PST

Entrepreneurship is hard. Often time the battle that we must win is the battle inside our head.

Not too long ago, I was struggling to make ends meet. I worked 2 whole years but during this time, the struggle that I fought with the most is in my own head. I lived day by day having anxieties of whether or not I can really make things happen.

To give a bit of context, growing up I've lived my life in fear. Half my childhood was wondering where my parents are and how we're getting food in the table. My grandma would often trade some of our furniture to get watermelon from a wondering guy who pass by our neighbor with fruits. -I'm from the Philippines

Growing up I've always feared that my money would disappear which in return developed habits of not saving. At 12 years of age, I ended up moving to my mom in the U.S. and there too we struggled to make ends meet. My parents having to file bankruptcy and never having a place I can settle down and call my home.

It made it difficult to make good friends and any job I held, I ended up quitting or fired due to my own fears and insecurities. I was always afraid of how people judged me and ended up jobless for a long period of time. I thought maybe entrepreneurship was the way to go so I learned how to do social media ads.

Somewhere along the way I met a person name Daniel. This guy was very mellow and he's a type of guys who is always working a project one way or another. We were introduced by a mutual friend because he was trying to launch a product and I happen to be learning social media ads.

Long story short, we ended up working on this project and became very close. Often times, he'd reach out just to ask how I'm doing. He even referred me to a lot of his friends and the company he's currently working in. Believe it or not, I don't have a lot of friends who reach out to me just to checkup. To me this was a new and valuable experience. For 2 whole years he pushed me to try out new possibilities, he introduced me to places I could have never imagined and even brought me whine whenever he visits me in California.

Not long ago, I never thought of myself more than an insecure and anxiety driven individual. I'm always striving to improve but I've always went back to my overthinking self. I call him one time and these problem seems to go away.

Fast forward to now, I'm now running 2 different companies with 1 big client and I am very happy with where I am now. It all started form meeting Daniel. If it wasn't for him, I would still think the way I used to before. From time to time, my own insecurities haunt me but with a phone call, I would feel 10,000 better.

For a lot of us who suffer from our own fear and insecurities, I believe finding friends who are honest and have faith in what you do is key to overcoming our own minds. Prior to this, I did read self help books but it's nothing in comparison to the friendship I've developed. One thing I've always stood by is to be a friend to get good friends.

Entrepreneurship is hard.... Life is hard... having someone beside you who has trust, faith, and honesty can really make a difference on how we perceive life. Even if it's just one person.

Daniel doesn't usually read Reddit but when you do, this tribute is dedicated to you.

    Are my services too broad?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 08:52 AM PST

On my side gig I run a digital media service specializing in content creation and delivery. In simple terms I film and edit video content, deliver content to clients, and I also have a knack for web infrastructure and project management for those clients who need help getting their business up to speed on the internet (not a developer - think setting up AWS Lightsail and WordPress instances for customers to self-manage websites on a budget).

Currently I market these services as Video Content, Management, and Web strategy. Does this sound too broad? I am trying to find a way to push these three main services without sounding too broad or far reaching with my keywords. However I am not a wordsmith by any means, I am a worker. Most people have no idea what "management" stands for, as project management doesn't have a simple name that fits in a website header. I don't want too have too broad of a reach, yet these services go hand in hand more often than not so I did not want to leave any from the scope of a project. Thanks for your time and insight

Where should I set my business address?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 12:36 PM PST

Hello Reddit! I'm from the US of A and have a quick question. I live in Maine. I moved from my small little town to Portland where I currently work. It's a great starter city because Id like to eventually move to NYC, Boston, SF, etc. That's besides the point.

I am registering my LLC in Maine and I don't know which address I should register it at. I don't want to send it to my apartment because in a year or whatever if I move then I don't want to have to forward my mail to a new address or amend the LLC. I can send the mail to my parent's house, only downside is they live in hour away so if there's important mail I need then I have to have it sent to either drive the hour or have them ship it to me which isn't convenient for anyone. The third option is to get a P.o. box for mail specifically and register the business itself to my parents address. It's a small operation so I can keep it there until I eventually buy my own house or get a permanent office. The forth option is to get a UPS box in Portland, but they can be somewhat pricy and I don't want to spend money on something I might not even need to spend money on. What would be the smartest place to register my busienss? My parents own their house and will probably never move out.

Selling Food Products in a Subscription Box Legalities

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 12:04 PM PST

    Hello,

I am wondering if anyone has experience in the legalities in selling a subscription box that contains food products. The reason I am asking is I want to start a subscription box business that sells products from my home country (Canada). I am wondering with all countries having different laws for food products, how would I go about starting the business. All of the food products will be sourced from manufacturers in Canada, and none will be produced by me. The specific questions I have are...

    1. Do I have to instruct the manufacturers to change the labels to fit each individual countries laws when sourcing products, or is it fine for them to remain the same since the products are not physically being sold in a different country?
    2. Canada uses the metric system on labels does this have any effect on selling in the USA?
    3. Are there any approvals the products must have to sell globally?

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

    Flipping Project Part 11

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 11:31 AM PST

    Hey guys!

It has only been less than three weeks since my last update, but enough has happened to write up another update.

You can find the previous installment here.

To recap, in my spare time, I enjoy buying and selling baseball cards. I am fairly active in the hobby and have a bit of success "flipping" cards. I wanted to track $1,000 through the year and see what I can turn it into. I am documenting that here. In part one, I purchased this for $950 before buyer's premium, coming to $1,165 with shipping. After fees, I sold the set for $2,622.79.

A really really really brief recap of the past ten parts

I started in December of last year with $1,165. I have since bought and sold over $30k in baseball, football and various sports trading cards. I have had a few great successes ($1,165 into $3,085 before fees - $2,771.20 into $6,200.10 before fees - $1,086.68 into $3,190.54 before fees) and a few duds. I generally sell my cards on ebay, but utilize auction houses every now and then. The biggest bottleneck I face is submitting cards to PSA (a third party grading company), a card might have a 2-4 month turnaround time. To successfully "flip" you need to balance some of these purchases with shorter flips. Right now I have approximately 30% of my inventory with PSA.

    Purchased
There were FOUR major auctions that ended in past three days – I won thousands of cards in each auction and spent around $60k – for this project I bought the following:

    • BLANKETS! I bought a really neat group of 1912 B18 blankets for $1,270.80 from Lelands. This is much more of a gamble than I usually take – I am not too familiar with these blankets. I did sell a group of three of them for $103.50 in September. This group seems to be in great condition with a plethora of difficult variations and stars. I am hoping to average $20-25 per blanket on this. If I can get $2,500 at auction in small 3-4 blanket groupings, I will be very happy.

    • I can't name five current hockey players, but that didn't stop me from buying this group of 1962-63 Parkhurst cards for $545.40 after fees and shipping. I actually bought four groupings of hockey cards in this Leland's auction, but only this lot for the flipping project. These cards seem to be in good condition and there are several star players (mainly Gordie Howe). A pro tip: if the PSA cert numbers are in chronological order, it means the auction house likely got the cards graded on behalf of the consignor. It's a good way to gauge the overall technical condition of a lot when the photos aren't ideal.

    • Finally, I bought a nice group of Mickey Mantle cards for $1,800. The two best cards (the 1953 Topps Mantle and the 1953 Bowman Mantle) are in the last picture for some reason, I have a feeling it played into why this lot went so low. Those two cards should go for a combined $1,100-$1,300. The remaining cards might be another $1,500+.

    What Sold

    • The two N154 cards sold last night at REA. They are listed here and here. and totaled $675. Last installment I told you I was hoping for $1,000 combined, obviously fell short and was a little bummed. Still nearly doubled my money for very little work, but it's still a bummer.

    • I sold almost all of the cards from the recently purchased multi-sport graded lot at Goldin. The $.99 ten-day auction brought in $1,257.38 – led by the 1961 Topps Mantle and the 1967 Topps Carew rookie. I had already brought in $687 from BINs a couple weeks ago, so this is a healthy profit. After fees I am up $693.14 with one card left (which I believe should bring in $100-175.

    • I sold the graded football cards that were a part of the second Goldin multi-sport lot I purchased, netting $264.21 and les by the BEAUTIFUL Norm Van Brocklin card. There were 36 cards in this lot, I sold 7, I have 14 listed for auction right now and I sent another 15 to PSA. It's too early to decide whether I am trending towards a profit or not, so I left the P&L below at break-even. We will see.

    PSA Update

Here is a link to the Google Doc with the status of all of my PSA cards. The spreadsheet also includes a summary of where the project is.

There has been absolutely no movement since the last installment. To those unfamiliar, PSA is my bottleneck. Grading has a 2-4 month turnaround, so I might not see any of these cards until February 2020. Hopefully I will see some movement soon though. I have maybe $1,500-2,000 tied up with them right now so it would be nice to get the cards back to sell.

Does anyone know how to buy Comicbooks wholesale/bulk directly from the publishers?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:49 AM PST

    Hi,

Does anyone have experience buying items wholesale, bulk directly from the source?

I'm looking into buying comic books directly from the publisher but don't know where to start.

I couldn't find anything on Marvels and Dc website.

How does one get access like the retail shops do?

How to fundraise from VCs as a first time founder?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:47 AM PST

    Hi guys,

Have you ever wondered how to structure your first fundraise? All founders have been there. You've estimated how much you need for the next 18-24 months, if you're in tech, you most likely decided on Venture Capital financing. So now what? I wrote something small on structuring a process around fundraising. I like to keep it simple and treat it as a sales process. Generate the leads, qualify the leads and keep all your interactions on record are the very basics to having a bit more structure. It is not a magic pill but will help.

    https://ana.vc/2019/12/06/7-steps-for-a-successful-equity-fundraising-part-i/

How did you structure your last fundraise? What were the pitfalls you encountered? Would a better structured process have helped?
