Spare pack of cigarettes - it’s stupid but it is working

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 05:01 AM PST

    Thought I'd share something funny/stupid...

I'm in industrial equipment sales. I am a field rep who spends a lot of time calling on customers and doing in person prospecting (colds calls, intel gathering, etc...).

Typically I try to get a hold of guys/gals in maintenance or engineering.

Getting past gatekeepers is tough, but my new trick has got me to more decision makers than anything other in the past. I wait until someone goes outside for a smoke. I then pull out my trusty pack of cigarettes, light one up, and go strike up a conversation. Usually like "hey how's it going, I'm (name). I have been trying to talk to someone in maintenance here for weeks, but that receptionist is tough" A lot of times, they work in maintenance or something similar. About half the time, they take me right in the back or give me solid information that is actually useful (another good time to stop in and to come right into the shop). Other times, I can set an appointment with the guy I'm talking to.

I don't smoke and I only use this when I can't get in any other way. Just thought I'd share....it seems stupid, but it's working.

Seeking advice! Career change - Recruiting to Sales?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 09:42 AM PST

    Hello Reddit!

I am a young professional with 3.5 years of recruiting experience under my belt in multiple industries, recruiting for a variety of roles. I am hitting that point in my career (quarter life crisis? Lol) where I am ready for the next thing. I love recruiting and I think my personality and skills align very well with the job, but recruiting is all I have known so far and I do not want to "get comfortable" and look back in ten years wondering if there is anything else out there for me. I feel like there is not much more I can learn in my current role unless I move up or change careers.

Upon lots of reflecting - I think sales could be a good next step for me because it utilizes a lot of the same skills (I sell my company to candidates all day, every day), I am very metrics driven and money motivated. I also love to help people - which is one of my favorite parts of recruiting.

My concerns with making a switch are - (1) I don't want to make lateral moves my whole life and never work my way up.. I am worried about leaving a career I have started knowing I will get promoted soon and can probably have a successful career in talent/hr if I keep at it. (2) Potentially having to take a couple of steps back in order to take a few steps forward. Will I have to "start over" and work my way up again - will this be worth it?

So my question is this - Has anyone here made a career change to sales? If so, why did you make the switch and what were you doing before? Do you regret it? Really I am seeking advice, personal experience, feedback.. really anything to help give me some more clarity on what I should do next.

Also - I am particularly interested in medical sales (like everyone else is... ha) so any advice there would be helpful too!

    Thank you all in advance!

TLDR; Young professional with 3.5 years of recruiting experience wanting to make a career change to (medical) sales - Seeking any career advice, personal experiences, feedback etc.

Would anyone be willing critique my solar sales presentation?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 11:30 AM PST

While the end-goal is always to close deals in person, I've recently been experimenting with emailing prospects a PDF presentation a couple days before the appointment.

The theory is that this will allow the customer to "sell themselves" and research the benefits of solar on their own time, so after our first appointment they will be ready to move forward.

I was wondering if anyone would be willing to critique my email pitch, and let me know if it's a good idea. I just need you to PM me your email address so I can send over the document.

    Thanks in advance.

Looking for advice about how to pre-sell B2B software

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 10:22 AM PST

    Hi all,

I'm building a freemium SaaS product that instantly lets PMs identify and contact their users in-app to conduct user interviews. We're currently about a month away from a functional MVP that I would feel comfortable that customers would be happy with / see value from.

Everyone I've talked to says to pre-sell the software to 5-10 customers to ensure there is really demand for our product. I've never sold anything in my life, so wanted to ask whether anyone has any advice for selling a product that is a few weeks away for being real? What would you say in emails to potential customers, and if you get them on the phone, how do you ask them to put down a credit card number for something that they're not sure will actually exist?

    What we've tried:

    1. Cold email campaigns asking to speak and linking to our website (should we start cold calling? should we buy leads?)

    2. Creating a sales pitch deck to walk through with people on the phone: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1S\_3q78ZR3FY8D1L6Dmv6X7yiZXgfD8rIJsbHDE6buvU/edit?usp=sharing

    3. Creating a demo in one of our other products to show potential customers how we personally use the product

I'm not sure where to go from here, so any advice is appreciated!

I’ve held a professional healthcare consulting career for 13 years and now a sales rep for a large pet retail company of 6 months. I’ve long been dealing with anxiety and depression and now it’s hitting me pretty hard again and my numbers are reflecting it.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 08:46 AM PST

I'm going through a medicine change that I'm hoping will help very soon, like a month or 2 soon.

Next month we are having our annual meeting and I know I haven't been pulling the weight I know I'm capable of. I'm seeking recommendations on how I communicate that my numbers are low and will show increase in no more than 6 months.

My immediate manger "John" is a very reasonable guy that is basically the mediator from the VP "Tom" to us as the VP has a dictatorship style whereas my manager is more a coaching style.

In one hand I want to be open w my immediate manager and tell him that my meds and what I'm dealing with and almost 100% positive he will understand and grant me a bit of time to get in track.

Or just be a bit closed and just say I'm still learning and getting the hang of it and it will click very soon. Mind you, I have spent my entire career in healthcare and this is animal retail.

    Thought?

    How to boost sales?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 07:23 AM PST

I've been grinding on marketing my product on Facebook and Instagram. I sell personalized mugs btw. Sure, I'm getting a few sales to sustain the business but I'm not seeing significant boost. Is there anything I'm doing wrong or not doing at all?

Am I in a position to ask for 10% commission?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 01:38 AM PST

I'm thinking about asking for 10% commission, I'll try and put all the facts below so you guys can let me know if I have a chance of getting it lol

First sales job, 3 months in.

So I'm on basically minimum wage (£21k year) on my basic salary with commission at 5%

First month target was £4K I hit 9k, second month 8k I hit 16k and 3rd month (December) the target is 12k and I'm on 11k with a 2k contact in my inbox waiting for me processed Monday morning, and everybody else is on 0 for the month

There is only one guy that gets 10% but he's been there for 10 years and regularly does 50k a month in revenue. (But for this month I'm set to beat him)

I feel like I'm in a strong position to ask for 10%, I'm out performing everybody, even my sales manager.

But with this being my first sales job I don't know if this is the right way to do it? If they say no should I put in my notice? The pay and work environment is not great so I don't care about leaving that much, yeah It would be annoying interviewing again but I don't care

How to follow up after an interview?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 01:50 AM PST

Interviewed last last Friday. I kept messaging/pitching the executive chairman for an interview of a a large IT solutions and service provider, which i got. I thought I was going in for an inside sales role interview. recruiter had an old resume of mine and thought i was there for a business analyst interview. said they had a sales coordinator role coming up in January though. Emailed recruiter that Friday and thanked him for the interview and what not. received a email on Monday from recruiter said he would let me know by the end of the week. check the job board and they posted the sales coordinator role that Monday when he messaged me. Job would be a downgrade since I have full cycle inside sales experience working for a telco selling multiple products and solutions.

grabbed his card and cell at the end of the interview and asked him if it would be okay if I followed up, which he said of course. never heard from on Friday. with the job posting up it makes it a little tricky for me to follow up to see if I got the job since they're currently interviewing other candidates right now. i think they liked me. I'm planning on calling him this week but am unsure of how to approach the call with the job posting up. I feel like it would be dumb to call him and ask him what his thoughts are as me taking on the role while there interviewing for the position. any other approaches I should take when dial him? should i let him know i saw they posted the sales coordinator?

Thinking of getting into insurance sales. Advice needed.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 12:42 AM PST

I currently enjoy my job I have now but I don't know how long I will be able to handle the physical labor I put on my body. So I am considering selling insurance like aflac or something. How much travel will I be doing? I don't want to drive all over the place but I wouldn't mind flying around and staying in motels if the potential for sale was good. I enjoy giving presentations so public speaking is my strong suit.

Was given a challenge after a phone interview, how should I approach it?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 11:54 PM PST

I applied for a SDR role for a tech company that's been around for 8 years. After going through the first interview over the phone, the recruiter gave me a challenge to get to the next part of the interview process.

The recruiter gave me the contact info (name, email, number, LinkedIn) of the director of marketing and told me that the challenge is for me to somehow connect with the director of Marketing for an appointment. The recruiter also said to be creative and have fun with it.

I wonder if it's really as simple as it sound or is there some caveat behind it. I guess the challenge emulate what I will be doing as an SDR there since I'll mostly be talking to marketing persona. I trying to get out of retail and go into tech sales so I don't want to botch this. Any advice on how I should approach this?

Competitor went under, how can I find their customers?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 04:11 PM PST

A large company/competitor just closed their doors, abruptly. No notice given to it's employees.

Other competitors seem to be targeting their employees, I want to target their "old" customers in an attempt to bring on more business for our company. Is there any known tactics on sourcing information on a company's customers? Sure, google search might turn up a few answers. I'd like to talk to some of their sales reps. Having a hard time locating their employees through FaceBook, since you need a name in the search field, before searching by company/employer.

    How long should onboarding take?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 11:36 PM PST

This is my first sales job, B2B for clinical software. Started at the end of October, I got a handful of leads that had contacted the company or had demos way back in March/April. Company has been trying to get started with Salesforce for over a month and just got it working Friday.

I've had no sales from these cold leads, have started doing my own cold calls from my network, manager keeps saying she'll get me 25-50 leads but I have received no more in weeks. She said previous new salespeople are able to get 15 sales in a month, I'm an unusual case and could be too inexperienced - I've asked for guidance and need new leads, which I've yet to receive any help with yet.

Should I just run for the hills?? Or is this typical?

    Teva Sales Rep (Neuro/psychiatry)

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 07:12 PM PST

Hey all long time lurker here,

I was just wondering if anyone had an experience with Teva and being a pharma rep with them. More specifically if anyone had any insight into the neuro/psych division. I've read a lot in this sub and it seems pharma sales is looked down upon for many reasons. But I have noticed a couple threads mentioned that neuro/psych is one of the more secure sectors in pharma sales right now. I may have an opportunity but it would mean relocating across the country for my young family and I. I'd like to use this as a starting point as I have some B2B sales experience but in a not traditional sales role, for the last 15 months My goal is to end up in med device sales, but that's for another thread.

Just wanted to see if anyone had any specific experience with Teva? Benefits, work/life balance, and year one OTE?

Any insight is very much appreciated, thanks!

How do you set sales goals for extremely long sales cycles?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 06:29 PM PST

In our industry, sales cycles can be as short as 2 weeks, average 2-6 months but can be in the years due to the nature of the business.

Since the time frame can very tremendously and is typically on the very long end, how do you set reasonable sales goals?

Any Good Part Time Sales Opportunities for College Students ?

Interviewer left feedback saying 'id be better for corporate sales'?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 12:20 PM PST

I applied at a SaaS sales job as a BDR that focuses on agriculture and landscaping . I went through the interview process - I did very well and then I recently got feedback through my recruiter that they thought I did excellent and had great history in sales but I'd be better for corporate sales jobs and not one focused on agriculture . What does something like that even mean ? I asked my recruiter and she couldn't even tell me .

    Thoughts?

I'm trying to take input so I can either tweak my resume or fix how I word things so i can break into software sales. I thought someone here might be able to help .
