How much PTO do you get?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 05:00 PM PST

Also what is your role, type of company you work for, and do you have blackout dates on when you can't use it?

Looking to make a transition and ideally I am looking for a 40 hour a week job, with 5-6 weeks of PTO (with no restrictions on when you can take it), and a short commute. I'd even take a pay cut to find something like this.

Ia government accounting okay for someone with social anxiety?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 04:50 PM PST

The ideal job for me is sitting quietly working at a computer with regular fixed hours in a cubicle or office. Which led me to accounting. I have no desire to join the big 4. I know ill make less in gov/industry but my peace of mind and quality of life is worth it. Anyone in government? Would this be the ideal environment?

How to help a struggling B4 first year

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 09:00 AM PST

Do any of you have tips for helping a first year who is really struggling with learning the job? We have walked through work papers together before they prepare them, I've let them prepare independently and then reviewed the w/p with them, I've made "cheat sheets" that they can reference, but nothing seems to be working. If anyone has any suggestions for what else I can be doing I would really appreciate it.

Transferring to B4 once I get my CPA?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 04:44 PM PST

Was just curious if anyone has went this route, I am graduating in May, and am currently working at a small firm in my small town. They will pay for CPA tests and study prep, so I'm thinking of staying with them, getting more audit experience, getting my CPA, then attempting to move to a bigger city with a B4 presence as an experience hire. Would this be a difficult route, and if I were to go this way, is it ever possible to get hired as an experience hire with a CPA from out of town? I know cold applications as a recent grad is usually immediately looked over and passed on, but I'm hoping that having my CPA would allow me to move locations easier

Transferring from a Big Four Accounting firm in Florida?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 04:20 PM PST

Looking for advice on the transfer process within Big Four Firms from state to state. My boyfriend just got an internship at PWC in Florida in the last semester of his senior year and at then end he will he invited on to stay in a permanent role. The only problem is that we have had plans to move to Denver after his graduation for a while now. We know this is an amazing opportunity and he doesnt want to give it up without the promise of something equal or better once we move. That being said we do still want to move to CO and were curious if anyone knew what the transfer process was like, or when to bring it up in his current role (Start in Jan 2020)

Do CPAs firms care about P/NP on transcript?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 08:14 PM PST

I will be taking 24 credits this upcoming term. I am thinking about taking 12 credits electives pass or no pass because they don't count towards my major. My advisor told me "it is better to get grades since this would show you ability in different academic directions", I want to maintain a high GPA (currently have a 3.90) and want to focus on other classes. When I apply to the Big 4 will they care that I have a couple P's on my transcript?

How will becoming a stay at home mother for a few years impact my career?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 04:53 PM PST

Hello! I've been an accountant working in public for a few years. I have one more section of the CPA to pass which I'm taking next quarter. I've been happily married to my husband for three years, and we've decided that we want to have our first child in the next 1-2years. However, we both feel strongly that one of us should be a stay at home parent. We do not have close relatives who could be able to care for our child, and we both are opposed to hiring a nanny and sending them to a babysitting school. We've talked about this for months, and I agreed that I would be a stay at home mother just for a few years until they are old enough for school. My worry is that once I'm ready to go back into the work field, that it will be difficult and employers will frown upon the fact that I've taken such a long break. Is there anyone who's been through this that can provide advice or input?

Is $42,000 a ton of debt to graduate with?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 09:51 PM PST

I'll be graduating next December with a dual degree in accounting and econ with 150 credits. Overall, I'll be $42,000 in debt with an interest rate of ~6%. I did the math, and it calculates to about $475/month for 10 yrs, although I plan on paying it off a bit more quickly than that.

Did anyone else graduate with a similar amount? I've been kind of scared about how much money I've had to take out since a lot of my financial aid stopped once I got to 120 credits.

How to properly train associates/answer questions but also do my own work efficiently? Other distractions too?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 11:47 AM PST

I'm a recently promoted senior and I'm currently the 'in charge' on a VERY large first-year audit job with a brand new associate working under me. He's very bright and learns things quickly, which is a blessing, but he's still new and needs a lot of hand holding and guidance, especially since there's no PY for him to give him a base idea. I've found answering his questions gets me very distracted from my own work - e.g. I will be working on XX, he'll ask me a question, I'll answer it, client comes in for a meeting, then manager wants to call about ZZ, I go back to my work (forgetting I'm working on XX), start on YY, answer another one of his questions, then suddenly it's lunch time and XX and YY aren't done. I may or may not have meetings or calls scheduled for the rest of the day. On top of this I also have to proof read his client emails and sit in on any client conversations he has until I feel comfortable he's able to do it on his own. (again, he's super smart and has a great attitude but he's new)

I've had to stay super late every day to get my shit done which has been soul sucking - it's not even busy season.

Advice? I know for a fact teaching is not a strong skill of mine, but it's completely necessary for this job. Super nervous for when busy season rolls around.

Getting ready to not be home and living out of a hotel for the next three months. It's busy season so not losing out on much but basically spend about half the year when I add all my other jobs living in a hotel not seeing my pets or friends and family. It's rough

Cold Approach to dropping off resumes

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 02:43 PM PST

I have heard of other recent college grads/CPA candidates going around to local CPA firms and CPAs in their area with a copy of their resume and asking if they need any help for busy season.

What are your thoughts of people doing this?

Is this a good way of getting your name out there when you move to a new area?

Any advice for those of us who plan on doing this?

    Thanks!

Are there more risk when working as a CPA?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 08:26 PM PST

Everyone is glamorizing the license, which makes sense since it opens up many opportunities.

However, isn't there more liabilities and more punishing mistakes? What if you sign off work that was done wrong?

How to get entry level B4 job as a graduate

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 10:30 AM PST

Any tips for getting an entry level B4 job without going through campus recruiting? I graduated from an AACSB school with 4.0 and passed the CPA exam, but I have no public experience. It looks like PwC has entry level positions (0 exp requirement) listed online, but the other firms only seem to have experienced hire listings requiring 1 year exp. If I am connected with some recruiters, partners, and classmates turned associates on Linkedin, should I just message them and let them know what's up with a copy of my resume? I know hiring won't really be happening this time of year, but I can hold out til summer or fall. Thank you and good luck with busy season.
