Auditing your clients taxes is like...

Came home and told my wife I was switched over to a big public audit client for the busy season

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 09:07 AM PST

And she asked if that meant I would get a raise and a bonus. I laughed and told her of course not! I will be working even more hours but it's a great learning opportunity!

She hasn't spoken to me since. Please help!

can you get fired for fucking up an inventory count lol

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 05:35 PM PST

first count ever, was overall very rough, miscommunication with the senior and ended up not doing the additional floor to sheet/sheet to floor samples, asked senior if I can be rescheduled to do it correctly and she did not respond. I still don't understand why they make people with 0 experience do these things alone.

Big 4 wants me to make a post on social platforms (linkedin) about how I will be joining them. I haven't started yet. Is this mandatory or can I make such a post closer to my actual start date? Did everyone get this email or specifically me because of my LinkedIn? How should I respond?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 08:25 PM PST

So I got an email from a big 4 firm encouraging me to make a post about joining them/goals for creating my career there and to tag the company's hashtag. Don't get me wrong, I'm very grateful and excited for this opportunity. The email was from a big 4 recruiter/ on boarding team member.

I'm kind of a don't count your eggs before they hatch kind of guy and none of my friends even mentioned their firm on linkedin (barring one, but she's a cool gal, no cringe post) until they started there. I don't start until late 2020 in a full time role.

The issue I have with making such a post though is that while I am certain of my decision to join big 4, in the mean time I am searching for employment up until or near the date I start for various reasons. The COL is pretty high where I move to, plus it would be nice to have 1st and last month's rent without having to borrow from my parents as well as being able to better manage other moving costs and the first 2 weeks. Also, I currently reside at home and really want to party and live my life now that I'm done school but my parents are religiously conservative so feel bored at home. I need money to be able to move out. I lived alone during college and I enjoyed it.

If I make such a post I think my chances of finding other employment will immediately go down as the incentive to hire someone who they know is going to quit or not want an extension goes down. I am generally applying to temporary positions but regardless, some are for a long duration and I'm sure they'd prefer someone they have an opportunity to retain. I'll take just about anything well paying enough to move out and be able to lift/party a few times a week. P.S. if any of you got something, hit a brother up.

Was this email specifically sent to me because they checked my linkedin? Or is it a general email sent to everyone? If it wasn't for the logistics of it I'd have no problem declaring INCOMING _____ on linkedin or making this post. If it is a general email that would make me feel a lot better. Should I reply back to the email? He tagged my main 2 recruiters in the email as well who I am connected to on LinkedIn (though not connected to him on Linkedin)

Friendly reminder for controllers of small companies. Remember to review your vendors and figure out which one you need to send a 1099 to. No one wants to track down that last bit of information on January 30th.

    New client.

I'm doing year-end tax planning for him. I send him the projection yesterday and he emails me today and mentions a wife. Last year he filed single.

How hard is it to switch B4 firms as a staff?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 07:52 PM PST

Background: I am on my B4 office's (and possibly the entire national firm) nightmare client. 50 hours a week outside of busy season, 50-60 for the month of each quarterly, 85-90 hours working every day during busy season. The team is unfriendly and mean (probably from intense stress), the managers and executives are selfish workaholics, and the partners are unwilling to allow any flexibility or make the smallest accommodations on the team because they're hierarchy obsessed jerks. Most people don't last a year on this client and leave public for good once they're assigned

I'm a new staff as of the fall, interned on the team and knew it would be bad. Team is even worse in some ways than I thought. I have no potential for growth within the firm while I'm on the client, because I don't get the opportunity to deal with all (or even most or any important) aspects of the audit on this client due to size. It's fucking impossible to get taken off this client and put into another, or even to split time on clients and preserve your sanity.

Problem is I actually like public accounting! I just don't like these insane hours that I'm forced to keep just for BS appearances (I haven't even charged 40 hours a week yet FFS yet I need to be in the office for 50-60 every week). Is it possible to switch firms before I reach senior? I don't dislike my firm or the people outside of this team that I work with, but I don't want this one client to totally burn me out of public while also destroying all of my opportunities to learn and grow. What would it look like to try and get in with another firm after completing a full year at my current one? Is that possible, and if you know anyone that did it, how?

Career Change to Accounting in late 20’s?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 05:23 PM PST

I've been wanting to transition into the financial industry for a while but have no experience. I have a useless degree and graduated college pretty late (never took academics seriously until it was too late). There's a local college and tech school that both offer accounting degrees I've looked into. I don't mind going back to school if it can help my career. I also don't mind starting in a lower position.

Currently work in logistics so I was wondering if anyone had any experience in making the change this late. CPA would be the goal but am open to any position really. I would like to have a job in the field during school but that seems to be the issue. What's my best strategy going forward?

TL;DR I want a career change and want to hear opinions or stories if anyone has been successful in doing so and how should I approach it. Thanks.

does a segregation of duties always exist? what if there are more duties than people

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 04:35 PM PST

i have an interview coming up and was thinking about a reply if i was asked the question why audit.

i wanted to bring up something i had learned in studying for audit and apply it to my prior work experience. there was an example from my review course where it was a doctors office and the doctor was the custody of the asset the desk lady was the authorization.

i previously worked with a small number of people. and there was a similar breakdown. i would probably consider myself the authorization of the product whereas two members of our team were the asset. I was thinking about connecting that to the audit example but that's kinda all i got with it. like there was no payroll or w2s we got paid in personal checks and divi'd it up. so i'm not sure how comparing and reconciliation apply and if they do.

maybe it just sounded better thinking about it but not sure if it's a good idea or not to bring up if the opportunity comes up
