US national debt passed $23 trillion jumped $1.3 trillion in 12 months Posted: 03 Nov 2019 11:37 AM PST Given U.S debt is mostly sovereign, what will be the long term effects? Can the U.S continue to roll over debts indefinitely and just focus on debt servicing? [link] [comments] |

Wouldn't recession be not so bad for tech giants who have no debt and billions in cash? Posted: 04 Nov 2019 02:11 AM PST I am talking about companies like Alphabet and FB. They have 110B and 50B cash respectively, and very little to no debt. Meaning, they'll be able to just buy out bunch of companies / assets for a very good price during tough times. The reason I am asking is because I've always heard that tech giants take the biggest hit during the downturn, but why? I am newb. Thanks a lot. [link] [comments] |
Should I invest in oil stocks? Posted: 04 Nov 2019 02:26 AM PST Hi, I'm a young and new investor. I find oil companies like CVX have really good track record and pay attractive dividends. But......I don't know if it's something about being young that just tells me "the future is going to be renewable energy" and it always keep me hesitated in investing in these stocks. Is that a bad mindset? I don't like pollution either, I even feel that oil stocks are going to go down and solar/wind energy stocks will be big winners in the long run. However I don't see a lot of people doing this. Is that future just so far away it doesn't matter yet? Or will oil companies continue to do well even if the world turns green? I've been looking for an answer to this dilemma of mine since I started investing but it never seem to be completely resolved yet. PS: I have the exact same feeling about tobacco stocks too. Maybe it's just a 'moral' thing for me. [link] [comments] |
Advice for Lyft employee with 1500 shares (~$80k currently) Posted: 03 Nov 2019 03:43 PM PST 1500 of my Lyft shares were unlocked a couple of months ago. Foolishly, I decided not to sell, thinking it would go past it's IPO price. Now I'm down $20k+ from my lock in price. My lock in price for these shares is around $55. As an employee and an insider, I actually do think Lyft has potential. Right now we are focused on cutting costs massively and we are rolling out a new subscription service which will increase our bottom line. Based on what I've seen, I think the company has a future. However I am not good with valuations, so I don't know what the right course of action is for my 1,500 shares. I could sell and reap in a massive loss. I want to sell for at least the lock in price. What should I do with these shares? I here selling covered calls is a good way to generate some risk-free income? [link] [comments] |

Hypothetically speaking, how would one accomplish a portfolio equal weight by sector and size? Posted: 03 Nov 2019 08:21 PM PST Personal Capital's "smart weight" asks you to invest (almost) equally in all 9 Morningstar boxes PLUS in all 10 sectors. Hypothetically speaking, how would one accomplish this with a small, affordable basket of ETFs? Most of the SPDR sector ETFs seem to be large cap only. Are there other ways? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Nov 2019 03:24 PM PST Let's say I bought some AAPL at the start fo the year and my shares have done well. And let's say I think AAPL will correct a bit before its next rally, but I'm close to having held the investment for 1 year. do I hold for 2 more months (i.e. for just >1 year) to have lower taxes, or just sell now, take my gains, and pay taxes on what I made? Is there any easy way to calculate what would be optimal (i.e. how much am I going to lose in taxes if I sell now vs in 2.5 months)? [link] [comments] |

If I sell inherited stock, how am I taxed on it? Posted: 03 Nov 2019 06:11 AM PST Am I taxed on the value it was when I inherited it? (6yrs ago for the record) Or that it was when they bought it? Or that it is now? Or what. Also I saw this post, https://www.reddit.com/r/investing/comments/dquyir/should_i_cash_out_my_stocks_now_while_my_income/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share About tax gain harvesting which I'd never heard of, my taxable income is also very low this year, under the tax threshold, so wondering how that works. Would I be taxed nothing if I sell before the end of the year? And does that depend on whether I reinvest it or not? Because I'd probably only be selling the losers and not reinvesting in those. Please be specific Thanks very much. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Nov 2019 06:38 PM PST Is there an app that you can enter all your stocks/holdings and when (or what price) you purchased them at so you can track individual stock performance? I've tried a few and haven't seen anything that allows you to do this. They all seem to track overall portfolio value over time, not individual stock performance over time (specifically what you paid, what it's currently worth, and your net gain/loss) Thanks! Does anybody have data on the distribution of investor's returns in the stock market? Posted: 03 Nov 2019 06:08 PM PST I am curious wether it is a normal curve, and how fat the tails are, or if there is any skew? For extra measure does anybody know what the correlation is between performance one year to the next for individual investors? [link] [comments] |

Foreign money into Singapore has been up 'quite sharply' in recent months, JP Morgan says Posted: 03 Nov 2019 09:02 PM PST https://www.cnbc.com/2019/11/04/jp-morgan-on-capital-flows-from-hong-kong-to-singapore.html Singapore has been said to be a direct beneficiary of the unrest in Hong Kong, with some bankers and wealth managers saying they have received more queries from clients to move funds to Singapore. "We can't be conclusive that there is a shift from Hong Kong to Singapore. But yes, Singapore banking system — FX deposits have been going up quite sharply in the last two, three months," says J.P. Morgan's Harsh Modi, co-head of Asia ex-Japan for financials research. The real question is whether investors will consider Singapore or Hong Kong to be the global hub to park their money, Modi pointed out. [link] [comments] |

Will autonomous driving benefit or harm Uber? Posted: 03 Nov 2019 05:09 PM PST I could see how Uber could utilize autonomous driving to make insane profit, but I'm wondering if I don't understand this correctly and how in reality Uber will be harmed from autonomous driving? Would love to hear your thoughts and opinions on this matter. [link] [comments] |
