    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Fundamentals Friday Nov 29, 2019

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 12:07 AM PST

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on fundamentals, but if fundamentals aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against fundamentals here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Most fundamentals are updated every 3 months due to the fact that corporations release earnings reports every quarter, so traders are always speculating at what those earnings will say, and investors may change the size of their holdings based on those reports. Expect a lot of volatility around earnings, but it usually doesn't matter if you're holding long term, but keep in mind the importance of earnings reports because a trend of declining earnings or a decline in some other fundamental will drive the stock down over the long term as well.

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

    Market Cap - Shares Outstanding - Volume - Dividend - EPS - P/E Ratio - EPS Q/Q - PEG - Sales Q/Q - Return on Assets (ROA) - Return on Equity (ROE) - BETA - SMA - quarterly earnings

If you have a basic question, for example "what is EBITDA," then google "investopedia EBITDA" and click the Investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

    Thoughts about Starbucks

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 09:15 AM PST

I'm tempted to buy some after the last dip from the earnings but on the other hand I don't really see reasons why they should go up in the next few months. They went sideways in an otherwise good market.

What are your thoughts about the stock in the short and longterm?

    Shorting China during Trade War

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 11:26 AM PST

The U.S. and China have their deadline coming up for an agreement for the ongoing trade war. What are your thoughts on shorting china with the direxion index? Do we think China's market will flourish or crash after the trade war decision mid December? Do we think the U.S. market will crash, opening the opportunity to short the S&P500?

    Should I switch my broker

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 04:44 AM PST

I opened up a Roth IRA account with J.P. Morgan chase I haven't bought anything yet. I heard Charles Schwap had great deal like no fee on any transaction. Should I switch ? Because chase charges 2 dollars whenever I trade

Hey guys, 20 year old looking at investing

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 01:55 PM PST

Just want some tips on where to start and what not, I don't have a massive amount of money as I am an apprentice so I'm seeing this as time to "invest" in my knowledge. I heard Ben Graham books and some website have some pretty good starting points. Thanks for any advice!

Insider Buying at Matinas BioPharma as it trials its own omega-3 composition that has already shown superiority to Amarin’s Vascepa

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 10:20 PM PST

On Monday Matinas' CFO and Vice Chairman snapped up $115,000 and $106,000 of stock respectively. Matinas is an interesting company that has a prescription-only omega-3 fatty acid-based composition (similar to Vascepa) under development for reducing triglycerides (named MAT9001). Importantly it has shown superiority versus Amarin's Vascepa for the same indications.

Amarin's stock price has risen 10x over the past year as it has successfully progressed towards approval for Vascepa. Most recently an FDA expert panel unanimously to recommend Amarin's Vascepa for reducing the risk of cardiovascular events including heart attack and stroke.

However back in 2015, Matinas was conducting a phase I trial of its own omega 3 drug MAT9001, comparing it directly with Vascepa. It found that MAT9001 was much more effective than Vascepa at reducing triglycerides and VLDL-C. MAT9001 saw a 33.2% reduction from baseline versus 10.5% for Vascepa, and VLDL-C reduction was at 32.5% versus 8.1% for Vascepa. Despite that trial's success, Matinas put MAT9001 on the backburner while it used its resources to develop its lead antifungal candidate.

The company has since revived MAT9001 with a 100-patient Phase II crossover head-to-head trial against Vascepa on patients with high triglycerides that will begin dosing next quarter, with results expected by the end of 2020.

There is no guarantee that it will succeed and even if it does the approval process will probably take a while. However the results so far are encouraging and the insider purchases send a clear signal that senior management is optimistic about the trials outlook.

The stock price has increased almost 100% but, with a market valuation of just $192 million compared to $7.3 billion for Amarin, there could be a lot more upside for investors who join the CFO and Vice Chairman in their recent purchases.

"FOLLOW" me if you would like to see my regular updates during the week.

This is not a recommendation to buy or sell. Stocks are risky and not suitable for everybody. The stock mentioned is HIGH RISK AND SPECULATIVE. Please do your own research

/NG Am I missing something here?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 06:42 AM PST

So as far as I can see EIA report has shown withdrawals in Natural Gas storage for the past two weeks, and there is colder harsh weather forecasted, but NG and UGAZ prices keep dropping.

I know those aren't the only two factors that impact Natural Gas prices, but what gives???

Could it be simply because there's so much in storage so late in the year? Or is there something else I'm missing?

    Canada Goose?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 11:31 PM PST

    Hi all,

I'm curious about how you feel about Canada Goose stock. GOOS.

It's marked at 38.71 today with about 6% gain from two weeks ago.

What do you think about the company itself and the stock? It's very volatile but I think it is at the low dip due to the current political concerns and actual sales issues in China.

I'm thinking to put 20K more for a long position. What do you think?

    Thanks!

Why Talking About Individual Stocks (and Sectors) Makes You Look Dumb

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 02:33 AM PST

    https://archive.is/jCrIs

This article in a way demonstrates just how far index fund investing has come, from once being scoffed at, to now, when some (like the author, an MD) view any deviation from it as a sign of lower intelligence, and those who succeed in their efforts to outperform it are assumed to be nothing more than lucky gamblers.

Is this a sign of Michael Burry's hypothesized index fund bubble?
