In 1985, Schwarzman set up Blackstone with his former Lehman Brothers colleague Peter Petersen with $400,000 of their own capital. 34 years later and Blackstone is the most feared and respected private equity firm in the world with a total AUM of $554BN. He attended Yale University in 1965, where in his senior year he became part of the Skull and Bones secret society. Members include former president George H. W. Bush, and the greatest comedian of all time - George W. Bush. John Kerry is also a member, therefore meaning both nominees for the 2004 Presidential Election were members… Schwarzman used this network to connect with Bill Donaldson, who was running an investment-banking firm, Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette DLJ.
