I'm going to be shutting down for good next week. This is the lowest I've ever felt.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 02:22 AM PST

I started a business convinced beyond a doubt that what I have is the best. Well, I still think that.

But alas, it's not enough. I'm going to have to enter liquidation and my staff doesn't even know. I just want to work the weekend to get the staff as much of their pay as possible.

I feel like such a complete and utter failure. I have 100k in debt I'm personally responsible for and nothing to show for it. I wanted to give my family a good life and in stead I'll probably have to leave for a couple years to go work high paying travel jobs and not see my wife. She has to pay for my fuck up.

I can make a post mortem later when the emotions aren't so raw, but I fell into all the classic traps of a first time entrepreneur.

I rent out my entire Airbnb house. I've made more money than traditional long-term rental. How do I create an LLC without getting my house involved?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 04:23 PM PST

Facts: I own my house. I rent it out short-term on Airbnb. I do my own cleaning, pay all the bills, insurance, repair and replace. I've made the same amount in 4 months than I would in a whole year in traditional renting.

Would like: to create an LLC for my Airbnb. Be owner-employee and have some on-call independent contractors cleaning company. If I have $500 in my LLC account that's all I want people to sue me for. The ceiling is so low that it defeats the purpose of filing a lawsuit.

Would not like: to have my house in the LLC as that would raise the ceiling to $600,000 for larger lawsuits and have my home taken away.

    Please advise.

Edit: Thanks for the replies, everyone. I got distracted and it's late. I'll chime in as soon as I can.

    Radio station

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 02:41 PM PST

Wife wants to start a radio station. I think she's identified a genre that does get a lot of radio attention with a large and dedicated fan base that may be attractive to a specific group of advertisers, but I was wondering what should we be expecting as far as up front costs and set up? Any help would be appreciate and would love to hear from someone who's started up a radio station themselves thanks in advance!

Consultants, how do you get past the "age discrimination"?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 07:18 PM PST

    Hello,

I started a business doing consultant for businesses on market research etc. However, I am finding it very difficult to find clients that will actually sign me on.

The interesting thing is after I do the demo, most of the time the business owner is very impressed, but they also say I look quite young and wonder how much experience I have (I'm 32 btw, but lots of friends or people say I look 26). I tell them I have been working in the field for more than 10 years, (started at age 20).

Well - it usually ends up with a final call mentioning "We were very impressed we just need someone with more experience."

Sometimes I know have friends in the company which is how I scored the presentation in the first place. My friends would mention later they hire contracted someone much older 50's that (in their opinion) doesn't have as much to offer "but has more experience."

The few companies I have worked with have been very pleased with the results and always come back, they are willing to give good reference - but even with this collateral, many companies just refuse to sign me on due to "lack of experience."

    Any thoughts?

Just lost my oldest account, stunned and deflated.

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 10:23 AM PST

16 months ago I started a business where I take photos of cars for dealerships. My first account fired me today. Been with them since day one.

When they hired me they offered me an introductory rate of $12 a car. I was told this would increase. It never did. This week I told them I needed more money, and instead of making a counter offer, saying no, or paying me, they just fired me. My other accounts pay me between $15-20. I asked for $20 expecting to settle at $15.

I'm somewhat shocked. I delivered a quality product for a long time and they just dumped me with no real replacement plans. Just, see ya later.

I'm not sure if I should try to get back on board with them immediately. I don't want to grovel. The decision was made at a corporate level. I have the phone number of the regional director. He didn't answer when I called.

Just wanted to get this off my chest. Thanks.

    Freelance Party Performer?/

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 06:42 PM PST

I'm a 17 y/o Female in HS; seeing as it's my senior year and I need money for college, I have had an job opportunity arise and I need some advice. I've actually been doing this a while now but it was mostly just volunteer work or I had to fill in for someone else last minute. As the career pathway I'm wanting to go into being acting, I figured this would be a good way to make some cash and get some more improv. experience. Anyways, my Mom told me her co-worker had seen pictures of my work and wanted me to come to her daughter's b-day party. It's a bunch of 5 y/o's and I'm pretty sure she said it was Disney's Descendants themed. This is a few weeks from now, I'll be making my own costume and will probably have some activities planned, being there for about 2 hours. How much should I charge per/hr? Keep in mind this is a small rural county I live in, so I don't want to overcharge.

    Business slow

Is anyone else experiencing a slow couple months? I work in the wholesale food/beverage industry and it's been an unusually slow couple months. Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same thing in their respective industries. Any tips on how to get things moving?

Competitor contacted a current client of mine to spread misinformation.

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 06:31 AM PST

    Here's the skinny:

I own an automotive titling company and one of my clients was contacted by 'someone' and they stated that we were attempting to contact their clients directly and poach their book of business. This isn't true at all. I attempted to reach the owner of the company questioning us with hopes to clear our name but have had no success. Obviously this is a serious accusation and I believe we deserve the right to at least know where this information is coming from. This client is one of our biggest clients and losing them will definitely impact the business.

Looking for advice on how to handle?

    Thanks!

Edit- Talked to the VP at the company. We are good. Also is willing to cooperate with me assuming I want to pursue legal matters. Thank you all for the opinions and guidance it's much appreciated.

Growing my family’s video rental store

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 09:03 PM PST

I know video store are out date, especially of our current age of streaming. My dad has been running his store for over 30 years now and slowly but steadily its been declining. I've been trying to figure out how to get people to come into the store but none of the ideas push people to visit and rent/buy. We potentially may be closing after our lease expires but I wanna make the best of it if we do end up closing shop. Currently we are doing a sale to get rid of excessive product and a decent amount of people are buying but it is not enough. Are there any ideas to help a video store become a go-to shop in our current decade ?

edit: We are also a smaller store so we are limited in space, unlike how i mention Amoeba Records as an example which is gigantic

Square POS users, how to give employee access while limiting the sales numbers?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 11:24 PM PST

I'm playing with permissions on Square and one thing that I want employees to be able to do is to give refunds to appointments when I'm not there. I created a "team member" account limiting their functions, but it seems in order to allow them to give refunds online, I have to allow them to view all the transactions, meaning they see all the revenue generated in a day/week/month by us which is something I don't want to disclose. I just want them to be able to click the link (generated by our appointment scheduler) which directs them to the transaction on Square, and then hit refund.

Anyone have similar set ups, or an I just out of luck? Thanks in advance.

Bridging gap from no knowledge to just enough in a new task?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 01:31 AM PST

Every industry has their sort of own built in lingo, and standard practices they expect you to know. Not knowing much about the industry is it best to read everything to catch up or to fast track that and choose to work with a business that regularly works with small businesses?

For example if I wanted scale up and open a manufacturing warehouse and fulfillment centers nationwide (with warehouse management systems) a logistic route and a way to monitor and properly staff these facilities I'd have my requirements that I need to be able to set up the warehouse layout to work at a certain speed, and get the software systems, and logistic routes to be able to deliver packages at a certain speed. Not knowing really what is possible, and not knowing how to use tech/automation/data to figure out where to place the fulfillment centres to cover the most ground, not knowing how to use different tech and software together to get a good result. Without knowing much about certain industries how can a person know what there options are?

Either read up on everything to catch up, work on this small scale to gain experience then scale up, or hire a firm that can walk me through everything?

    Cold-pressed Fruit and Vegetable drinks

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 10:27 PM PST

Hey r/smallbusiness, I'm a young uni student in Canada with this idea in my head that has been stirring for a couple of months now and I thought I'd get started with it, I'd love any advice you can offer me. From it being ridiculous to why it'll be too hard. Here's what I've gotten so far:

With a healthy mindset overcoming many consumers, I've had the idea of cold-pressed fruit and vegetable drinks. I know of only a few competitors in the market, and I would like to think there is a market for this kind of product.

After some hours of research (very little I know) I have a faint idea of some product combinations of fruits and vegetables that may be of interest to consumers and through mutual connections I know of someone that can connect me to an expert on exactly that - experimenting with flavours and such.

After spending the up front cost of this expense, I expect to know of how many flavours I can/should offer and how much production would run. At that point I'd like to see if any retailers would be willing to offer their sparse shelf space for my product.

Obviously this is very bare bones, I'm new to this small business idea and frankly everyone I ask for advice either tells me it's a perfect idea or that it's ridiculous and I know that it being perfect is far from true.

What I'm asking for is some steps to follow in after I have the product developed and potential retailers to accept my product? Any advice is greatly appreciated, as always

What are the top business virtual private networks, which improve business cybersecurity?

Can you please recommend, from your perspective, which could be the best VPN for business? I have read few articles, which claims that NordVPN Teams or VyprVPN are one of the best ones. So, I'm thinking about these ones as potential ones. What is your opinion?

So I was wondering if anyone could point me to any resources or give any tips on the business side of it. Thanks.

Buisness idea, college student. am i stupid?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 05:36 PM PST

Hey guys, im posting here because i want to know if im stupid. Im in an entrepreneurship and buisness management program and was wondering if this was a bad idea. Im 20 and very interested in marketing, im in this program but my plans are to go to uni (im in canada) in commerce with a major in marketing. Now for the buisness idea:

Collecting data from small/medium sized companies and organizing it in ways they could see profit. eg: make some excel charts about how much of "x" product they sell compared to "y" and when sales are the highest, lowest and months etc.. My idea is basically i would go buisness to buisness with a survey i make asking them a few basic questions like : whats my best product, how much of it did i sell, can i sell more? when do i do the best etc.. and if he cant answer all of them, id offer my services to show him what hes missing out on. Im a 1st year student but i have a parent thats been a marketer for over 20 years so im aware of the basics and if i need guidance i have the best mentor. I would do this at a pretty low price considering im a student and have 0 experience and the advice i want is basically this, will it work? I know its a bad question but anyone with a small buisness out there, after reading what i said, would you pay for this? Any comments are helpful thanks in advance!

Is credit union too risky to start a business bank account? (FirstCalgary)

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 07:04 PM PST

I got myself incorporated and I have a business entity. I'm planning to start a company that deals with IT solutions and investment (pooling my savings and my partner I trust as co-owners with decent trading returns from futures and options trading) and be able to better manage taxes via corporate status. I have a personal bank account with FirstCalgary (mainly due to no fees/minimum balance required though I have enough capital for that to not matter). I understand big Canadian banks provide some amount of guarantee whereas credit union does not, and was wondering maybe if it's better to start my business bank account with bigger companies. A lot of businesses I know do dealings with TD (even if they have terrible personal bank account options imo after shopping around). BMO has Nesbitt Investment division going on and they seem pretty good (I know someone who works there), so I am sorta gravitating towards that but it's out of sentimentality as opposed to hard math.

Anyone have good insights/recommendations on where I should build my church? Just a noobie trying to take better care of my financial independence, that's all oof lol

Do you guys recommend I put "indoor cleaning & detailing" or "office cleaning & detailing". I feel like the latter would limit my consumer base. What do you guys think? Which one looks more attractive and professional?

How do i apologize and retain a client i didnt properly deliver for?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 02:15 PM PST

We got a LOT of clients at once.

This one in specific came in from a reference thats been sending us a lot of work.

We fucked up on this guy. We fell completely behind schedule. The new guy i hired to handle a large part of it didnt do anything for him in the 2 billing months we've had for him. I fired the new guy. We partially delivered on a lot of things, but never fully delivered on anything we promised and the results show.

Client got on the phone with me today. He was pissed. I apologized profusely. I asked him for 1 week to turn things around. I know we can do it because we do good work, we've just never had this many clients.

I offered the client a refund on this month, and am promising to finish all ticket items within a few days, with results to show in a week.

The truth here is the results are bad because we're completely overwhelmed, can i honestly tell the client that? Should i expect to lose this and for him to give a bad review to my top reference?

The client is asking for us to explain ourselves, and what we're going to do to fix this.

As i write this, I'm looking at a draft of this explenation that is basically me coming clean:

We were understaffed. New guy i trusted to handle a part of the project has been fired and is being replaced. We're putting in crunch hours to fix this. Give us a week to turn things around by prioritizing this project (other clients will suffer but hopefully they dont notice so quickly), and we refunded this past month.

Anything else i can say here? Is this the right approach?

Not sure which platform to start on

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 07:03 PM PST

I'm looking for advice on selling products/services online from anyone who has experience doing so. My usual work (construction) will be wrapping up soon and with more free time, I'd like to attempt to expand and monetize a hobby of mine.

I write in my free time and last year, for a brief period, I did commissioned writing for people that they usually used as gifts (on Fivver). The product was just a Word file, but now I'd like to do a physical handcrafted piece of writing that I would mail out.

I already have the supplies, logo, prototype of how I want the product to look like, a rough cost of each product, and a price I want to sell at. I'm just unsure on what platform I should start with.

I'm considering Shopify because I hear it's easy to start with (no web development experience), but others say you should drop a decent amount of money into it to get started (and I'm wondering if it might offer more than I need for my simple service).

Etsy came to mind since the product/service I'm selling is handcrafted, but it seems so crowded, I feel it will be hard to stand out. Plus one of my services would require a little back and forth with costumers.

This would be my first time selling a product online outside of Fivver, so I'm open to all advice. I'm also on a tight budget so I'm weighing my options. Thank you for your time!

    Business partner holding company back

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 05:57 PM PST

My business partner and co owner of the business in question has been basically ruining any chance for this new business venture we have to succeed. I work on lots of logistics, technical and design work, some marketing, ect. Lots of the behind the scenes shit that nobody knows about. Recently (last month or 2) my partner has just been unacceptably lazy, while he may be doing more of the work as far as production, im trying to figure out how to grow the business, improve products, and strengthen overall performance of the business. He fails to recognize this as "useful" and basically just does the bare minimum each day and its really hurting the growth i think we can reach. I honestly dont know what to do...do i just say bye and leave him the business? I'm financially able to do this but i would take a decent loss. He wont buy me out and i know thats a fact. And i also dont think he'd sell his equity in the business. What do i do?
