my opinion on why retail stores are struggling Posted: 03 Nov 2019 04:51 AM PST sorry for this rant, but this opinion has been building as i watch retail stores rise and collapse and seemingly just repeating the same practices. the US has been overweight in retail and when things got tough between 2005-2017, we saw a lot of closings (some still coming) i think it's a false narrative to blame on-line shopping instead of poor management choices many years prior. some of these previous "retail titans" had built success buy providing something unique , goods or services unique to them that the consumer would seek out, and gladly pay for. then competition grows, success is copied and sometimes improved on, but the business is diluted somewhat. the retailers, bowing to shareholders for higher margins on imported junk. these days (for the past 20 years or so) unique offerings are few and far, it's just boxed stores all selling the same Chinese/imported, stuff no matter if it's clothing/electronics/home improvement/sporting goods. the things that separate these companies are very slim and marginal , you might have your favorites for one reason or another, but you could easily replace store A with store B. anyway, since there is nothing unique between retailers , and nearly everything is Chinese crap, why go to a crappy retail store and have a marginal experience? get your item on-line , usually shipped free , sometimes next day? yes there will be things you prefer to buy in person or a great promotion but honestly if you consider how someone like (the un-named on-line giant) seems to continuously improve whereas B&M sticks to the same old . all of the failing or failed retail giants could have maintained their position, but for whatever reason, they backed the wrong pony over and over again, to the point where the things they were doing right were consumed by the overall collapse. (Kenmore/craftsman) for example. what retail store do you go out of your way to visit, and why? [link] [comments] |
