    Dad's employee

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 11:27 AM PST

    Hey there,

I could use some major advice on this. My dad is the OMP for one of the BIG4 in our city's office. One of the incoming first year associates saw a picture of me on my dad's desk during one of his recruiting interviews. No big deal, everyone that comes into his office sees that picture. But ever since he got an offer from my dad's firm and accepted he has been STALKING me. It's like he knows my schedule. I think he has it in his head that I'm attracted to him but I'm not. Any advice to let him down easy? Maybe if I tell him that VLOOKUP is better than INDEX MATCH will he lose interest?

[Can] Anyone knows what’s the status on CFE marks?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 04:48 PM PST

Tomorrow would have been the release date for CFE marks. Anyone who knows anyone working within CPA that can spill some beans using throwaway accounts?

My sister worked at a specialist law firm that was acquired by PwC. How hard is it to switch between service lines?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 05:38 PM PST

My sister works as a paralegal for a specialized law firm that focuses on tracing the lineage of assets that had been abandoned or lost by companies. I'm not clear exactly what she does, but that's the gist of it.

Her firm was acquired by PwC recently and she and her coworkers are now PwC employees. They gave everyone a slight bump in salary too. PwC told them that they are going to be a specialty group under the tax practice.

My sister is interested in working hard, making an impression, and potentially switching over to the advisory side of the house. She has a degree in economics. Is it generally possible with a little bit of networking?

Are Big 4 websites a meme?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 12:43 PM PST

I really feel like everything I have read is just a bunch of bullshit about diversity, inclusion, and how great they are.

The day I have to sit at a dinner and pretend to give a shit about anything besides working and making money, I feel like I'll be fucked.

Do they really expect me to "know" and parrot the shit I am reading without first hand experience at the firm?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 01:42 PM PST

Hey yall. I got a job as an accountant at a mid size company in the USA and because this is my first ever job in Accounting, I feel anxious about my first day. I have the technical skills all down (excel functions are big and paypal as well) but again it's my first job in my career.

Do any of you have advice or experiences youd like to share on how to handle your first day?

Have a happy holidays everyone in the US!

How do I deflect "medical situation" attention off me?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 02:41 PM PST

Long story short I got a substance habit. I decided to genuinely kick my habit, because I relapsed my whole thing one level up, and I am just another level away from going back to unsustainable life. Already started going to groups again, already spoke to doctor, etc.

Now what worries me is all the attention I've brought to myself. This week I was trashed on downers and the effects lasted well into my next workday and I was very visibly pale, ill and sleepy in front of everyone and my supervisors and co-workers were so concerned they told me to just get some rest. My excuse was I ate something bad and had barely slept.

I have had like two or three similar experiences so far, but this time I got around 10 colleagues all worried about me, like "hey X looks very bad, keep an eye on him in case he faints, you know how stubborn he is, he prefers to finish his job instead of leaving earlier".

I am still managing to make my job, it's not like I am getting scolded for performance issues. I only receive good feedback. But there's something happening to me very visibly and I just want to be left alone, I don't want attention or co-workers asking me about life.

How did you guys first get your accounting job?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 04:55 PM PST

I'm currently going to target B4 school, I'm still a freshman but I would love to get any accounting experience at all so I can potentially intern for big 4 the following years. Giving myself some experience would put me at an advantage against my peers. How do I approach companies? Do I do it through linked in or just apply online? I feel like if I apply online it'll just go straight to the trash bin lol.

[CAN] EY tax vs KPMG tax experienced hire - urgent help please

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 08:13 PM PST

Really wanted inputs from you guys.

Backgroud: Canada west coast while KPMG being a smaller big 4 globally but a big player here. (KPMG has 3 times more employees than EY here).

Similar compensation with EY being slightly better on the benefits side.

KPMG is offering specific industry - real estate and financial institutes; EY is offering general practice - jack of all trades (master of none).

I'm curious to know the career path from any specialized tax people and if you regreted being specizied early on your careers or not specialized. I'm designated with tax background, no assurance BS. Please help! Need to make a decision in 3 days.

Advice for fast tracking core 1 and 2

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 07:59 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

As I have quite a bit of time before starting at my firm, I've decided to fast track and take core 1 and 2 simultaneously. I would only be working once a week at my part time job (even less maybe).

Has anyone done this and can recommend if it's a good/bad idea? Im terrified of failing but I'm expecting to spend 40 hours a week on it and treat it like a full time job.

Also, I have quite a bit of free time before the modules start, is there anything I can do to prep beforehand and make my life easier during the two months? I was considering buying one of those third party resources to go through before

Lemme know any advice you may have! :)

Will I still be employable in a few years?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 09:21 AM PST

I graduated with a B.S. in Accounting in 2014 and spent 2 years at a Big 4 firm. I then took some time off for some family stuff (taking care of my father who had a stroke), and after my father passed away I realized life is too short and I wanted to serve in the military just like he did. So I joined the military and will get out in 2023.

I am taking my CPA exams and expect to pass all of them by that time.

Will employers care that I will have a "gap" in my resume? I can explain what I was doing it just wasn't accounting, although by that point it'll be about an 8 year gap. I'd like to go back to accounting when I get out of the military (just probably not Big 4). [Btw, I don't do anything accounting related in the military, I tried but they didn't have any spots open.]

What are Big 4 firms looking for when hiring interns?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 08:32 AM PST

I really want to intern for one of the Big 4. I have a really solid GPA and Accounting GPA. I am in my masters program and am looking to intern during the summer between senior year and my graduate year.

The problem is, I don't have many extracurriculars (clubs) and I haven't worked a job over college. Will I be able to get an internship despite this? What are the firms looking for in candidates? (I have good social skills and am very approachable)

    Hostile clients - accounting

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 08:44 AM PST

Fellow accountants/auditors: how do you deal with hostile clients?

Currently, as an auditor, I'm dealing with one controller who makes asking for information feel like pulling teeth. Something to hide maybe? I need strategies to deal!!

    Capitalizing Building development costs (IFRS)

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 09:06 AM PST

I'm trying to find what the rules around what costs related to the development of a building can be capitalized.
If my understanding is correct carrying costs of the property e.g. property taxes, legal and accounting costs can be capitalized during the development process up until the development is actually complete but, I have no idea where I read this and what section or what section IFRS actually deals with this.
I also feel like there is probably a rule regarding starting a development and then intentionally holding off on completing it in order to capitalize the property taxes for an extended period of time.

If anyone has any reference materials on this topic or suggested IFRS sections that I should read it would be appreciated.

is my industry experience atypical of the field? because I hate my industry job and am wondering if I'll ever find an accounting job I like

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 04:11 AM PST

I left public accounting for a large-ish company (not national or multinational but one of the largest employers in my big city and lots of departments/locations etc) about 6 months ago and I can't see myself ever enjoying this job.

my biggest issues with my job isn't exactly the accounting part of it, it's the rest. I'm in a "central finance" type area of the company. I hope that this is the problem, rather than accounting itself, but I don't know if that's being optimistic.

the main duties of my job basically boil down to:

    • balance sheet reconciliations (not bad)

    • monthly journal entries that I can easily find the information for myself that I need to update workpapers, create and post (not bad, the most difficult accounting-wise)

    • monthly journal entries that I need to reach out to a few other departments to get information from to do (very annoying)

    • monthly accruals that I need to reach out to other departments to get information from to do (extremely annoying, as I am in charge of about 20 departments and I need to email each one individually on a monthly basis, not to mention pointless, as the entries are extremely simple to complete and the back and forth emails and misunderstandings are by far the most time consuming part)

    • monthly variance analysis where I reach out to the other departments to get answers on why there's variances (extremely annoying for basically the same reasons as above, plus the added downside of having to be "confrontational" to an extent to get good answers)

    • being one of the "central finance guys", which means fielding questions from the aforementioned 20 departments any time they have them, and the vast majority of the time I don't really have answers to (probably the most annoying and frustrating part of the job)

    • doing nothing for extended periods of time (boring, but doable)

sometimes I feel like I'm in an...anti-sweet-spot? a sour spot? with respect to my company's size. maybe if we were larger, there would be more higher-level people to deal with the shit I hate dealing with, consolidating and compartmentalizing information and such, and if we were smaller, there'd be less of the shit to deal with in the first place. I also feel like if I wasn't "central finance" and was instead one of those people within the departments I'm always contacting, well, I'd only have to deal with the "central finance guy" and not the 20 other departments.

but then I also feel that I just hate dealing with a ton of people all the time, and relying on others to bring in information, and emailing people and being on the phone with people all day, and maybe that's just the nature of the field, and anywhere I move maybe it won't be exactly the same but it'll be similar enough to lead me to being unhappy. after all, I left public accounting before making senior specifically to avoid emailing and calling a huge list of clients...and ended up doing basically just that, except with departments instead of clients...fuck.

it's just frustrating because I don't know if my job is the norm, and I really don't mind the accounting aspects of it, and I make good money and it's a stable and secure field, but all the extra baggage that came with this job makes me question my whole life.
