Closing my business- Chance for you to understand and run with it!

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 12:42 PM PDT

    Hi All!

First, I want to say that I truly enjoyed this sub...sometimes. Alot of folks that start comapnies or sold and just give vague information and want a congratulations. The info I really ever looked for was the tools, daily execution, customer side, delivery of the business in detail. I guess everyone is afraid someone will steal their idea and rightly so. I am here to tell you that I am closing my business and want to provide value to someone who wants to go out and make it.

About me- I started a mobile BRAKE mechanic business where I come to your home or office and fix your brakes on your vehicle. I operated for about 5 years and have been operating part/full time ever since.

Why am I'm closing??- I have a great full time job, flexible Work from home schedule and 2 daughters who are growing up fast. I always toyed with the idea of running my business full time and KNEW it would be successful, but always scared to make the jump because of stability, benefits and other factors known as the golden handcuffs. Also, I love my kids and after working my 9-5 and running home to change and get out the door to fix someone's brakes.... it just became too much for me. I was tired, exhausted and questioned if it was truly worth it. I wanted to enjoy Soccer, gymnastics and anything else I could after work but everything else came second. Also, I put my full time job in Jeopardy many times trying to do both. In the end, I sold my van, feel great because I get to workout more, spend more time with my GF, focus on my full time job and don't have the stress of running around in Northern Virginia Traffic trying to get parts and then to someone's house.

The Mobile Brake Business- Basically I traveled out to customers houses, inspected their brake pads and rotors and let them know if they needed changed. Sounds simple right? It is! If you have ever fixed brakes before and understand the two bolts to change pads and the 4 bolts to change the rotors... you are gold. You can work on EVERYTHING from a civic to a corvette. If you don't know how to do this but want to learn, just use YouTube.... If you still can't find it there, then this business isn't for you.

Tools you need for the jobs-

    • Suv or small Transit van. I used my Nissan Xterra and then upgraded to my transit connect van. You don't need anything fancy!
    • 3 Ton jack and Jack Stands- Go to Harbor Freight and get the aluminum one since it's lighter than the steel one because you will be moving this thing a lot!
    • Cordless Impact Drill- I bought a Bosch 21V impact that torqued up to 550Ft Pounds and that was more than plenty. It also can loosen ANY bolt or lug nut. I think I spent $400 on that thing and it paid for itself after one job.
    • 1/2 Drive and 3/4 drive wrench with the basic sockets to go with it. Up to 19MM in most cases- that's fine.
    • Box end and circular end RATCHET wrenches
    • Flat head screw drivers
    • Brake Cleaner
    • Rags
    • U clamp- to push the brake caliper piston back in once you are putting it back together.
    • I'll update this later, I want to get to other things.....

Marketing- I have Yelp and Google! These will be crutch and very crucial to get rolling. I also used Craigslist HEAVY in the beginning and did brakes jobs for almost nothing to get a 5 star review and earn a customer. Everyone hates YELP marketing but the ROI for the $300 bucks you spend is amazing.

Example of yelp's marketing- I paid them for a $300 ad budget, the cost per click to my page was $12.00. So if someone clicked on my page in took away $12 from my $300. In short I made my money back for the MONTH on 1 job, 1 JOB! In addition to that, I made over $4,500 in profit from yelp ads in 1 month. In short- Get on Craigslist, Yelp, Google business page and Facebook. i never used social media...but I heard it's helpful.

Feel free to look me up. Search "Brake Time" and Location- Bristow, Va.

My competition in that area is The Brake Squad (I was their first employee before I started my own) and Brake Masters. There are 3 mobile based business with over 5 million cars in a 30 mile radius. The upside to capturing business is HUGE.

How did I Make money? Here is the transparency I would love to see from other business's but never get it. This is my pricing structure. I charged way less in the beginning before I was paying taxes and was really small. Keep in mind, this price was ALL-Inclusive of Parts, labor, Warranty, etc. I charged between $150-180 LABOR only per axle. That number was fluid because I would charge more to work on German and non Domestic Cars.

Front Brake pad replacement- Charged $225.00 Profit- ($180)

Front Brake Pads and Rotors- Charged- 425.00 Profit- ($295)

Front and Rear Brake Pads Replacement- Charged-380.00 Profit- ($320)

Front/Rear Brake Pads+Rotors (Brake's all around)- $750- $850 ($500 or so, this would vary) Depending on the vehicle and cost of parts. In Parentheses is my PROFIT after Parts, Shop supplies but before Taxes... so not a true net number. This is just a quick breakdown of what I would make per job.

I could average around 3 jobs a day on the weekends and 1 job at night. Most weeks I walked away with over $1000.00. EASY. The most I ever made in 1 Week in $4500.00. That is a TON of work and very labor intensive, but the momey was nice. Let me tell you that this can be very profitable for someone who is willing to put in the work. It's LOW overhead and if you treat customer right they will call you time and time again.

I feel like I am missing a lot in regards to starting up and running the business operations but can answer questions you might have.

This is a job where you need to be good in front of the customer, have excellent communication skills (Talk through payment and how the job went), also have decent mechanic ability and the patience for the backend. Marketing, answer customer inquiries, Finances, Taxes, etc. YOU need to be it ALL, but not right away. You will slowly learn everything through trial and error, I have had to give a few refunds and take some jobs on the chin until I figured it all out.

Honestly, I had the intention of typing everything out but I'm tired of typing, (I do this for a day job too) for the moment and can answer any questions. Feel free to DM me if you'd like.

    Frustrated with meetup.com any alternative?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 03:49 AM PDT

Meetup which used to charge organisers about 10$-24$ a month; has now decided to charge even the users. Under their new testing payment structure, users will have to pay 2$ to RSVP for a free event and the organiser subscription for a month will also be 2$.

Meetup has given a choice to event organisers of covering the cost of event attendees if they do not want to charge them, which is only unfair. People have started looking for meetup alternatives and started ditching the app as well.

This is frustrating. Is there any good Alternative to Meetup?

Primary feature needed: Where you can email your group members.

28 y/o, New Jersey, 800 credit score. Keep the new job I hate or buy the store I loved working for 5+ years from my old boss?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 05:39 AM PDT

Just finished my bachelor's, got a job at about $50k year salary, still have $26k in student loans.

Never had a late/missed payments. Renting out a place at $500/month that's closer to my job. I've been at my new job less than six months and the people on my team make me feel dead inside. It pays, but at what cost?

My old job I've worked there for over five years, it doesn't feel like a job to be honest. My name is all over google reviews with positive feedback. It's a pack and ship center with consistent business. It's also in my hometown too.

I mentioned it lightly to my old boss about it. He says I'd be great at it, but it'll be challenging because I'm young and I have to go thru a lot of hoops. He also mentions an up front cost of about $300k.. something I certainly don't have..

Yet, is there anyway around it? Loans? Would it be worth it?

I'm in a conflict between wanting to do something I enjoy, but sacrificing financial stability/freedom. Or work at a place that has been making feel like shit, but it pays.

Just writing this out in case anyone has been in a similar position.

    Central jersey btw.

Looking for list of worldwide franchise opportunities

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 01:58 PM PDT

    Hi,

I am constantly working towards my goal of becoming financially independent. Right now I am looking for investments other than stocks, startups or real estate in order to generate a sustainable cashflow.

Is there some sort of website or list, describing international franchise opportunities? I am german bound so a german list would be fantastic.

Does anyone have experience running a franchise? I would love to hear your stories and learn. Thank you.

How would you disrupt the established business model in an industry?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 11:45 AM PDT

We built a site that allows people to book hotels at wholesale prices that are the absolute lowest rates anywhere online. I'm talking like up to 75% off booking or kayak, largely dependent on availability. One reason that we can achieve these low prices is our business model. Instead of buying hotel rooms at wholesale prices and marking them up like those larger sites, we charge a one time annual subscription ($59) and then allow our members to book those wholesale prices directly.

    Our major selling points:

    • It is very common that our members save more than the cost of our membership in their very first booking, if not, then easily the second booking. This means if you book more two or more hotels per year, the membership will easily pay for itself. Any savings beyond that point stays in your wallet.
    • For frequent travelers (hotel stay every 2 weeks) using Room Steals can save over $1k per year ($45 avg savings x 26 hotel rooms per year)

    The problem that we're facing:

    • Most people view booking hotels as one-off transactions, so the idea of paying for a membership to do that is completely foreign
    • The positioning of our competitors like booking, kayak, etc. already focus on lowest prices, so in the mind of the customer, they already book their hotels at the lowest possible price

Anyone can register on Room Steals and view rates for free. It takes less than a minute. When they are ready to book a hotel, we have them pay the membership and they're in for a whole year.

I have some ideas on how to go about marketing the site, but would really love some ideas and feedback from the r/Entrepreneur community. Happy travels!

If you had one chance at retail

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 11:50 AM PDT

    Hi all!

First off, I love reading all the stuff here, this is such a great community, so thanks for that!

I've stumbled upon a AAA-location in Sweden with a short term lease just over the holiday season and to the end of January. This is the perfect spot to sell for Xmas, black Friday and singles day...

Only problem is, I don't know what to sell.

So in looking for inspiration. If you'd have this opportunity to be present in physical retail during the most hectic months of the year, what would you be selling?

To break even I need to sell for approximately $500/ day.

    Many thanks

Where can I find opportunities to work for equity? (Don’t need money for basic expenses but would like to strike it big)

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 01:54 PM PDT

I've been blessed to be able to live off dividend payments that cover my basic expenses. Now I see I have time (more than I'm used to) and I am getting a sense of a lack of purpose. I don't want to go back to being a regular employee, though (I'd rather feel lost than feel like I'm wasting my life away making someone else rich).

Is there any site for a person like me who is looking for opportunities to work for equity and contribute to a imminently great project/product that will prosper and make use of my time and skills.

I am a programmer by trade with experience in Java and enterprise data software, blockchain, conceptual knowledge of AI/machine learning, C#, python, databases, SQL/noSQL and more.... I also believe the most important attributes for contributors are dedication and care to the project and goals at hand.

Any resources to make the best use of my time (for equity or other attractive compensation) are appreciated. Thank you.

Can I get some overall feedback on my project?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 01:45 PM PDT

    Hello Reddit!

My project is a website I made for posting and learning about animations and digital art. It's gone through a lot of changes so far, but I feel like they're for the better. I would really appreciate some feedback given so I can better improve it more and more. This is just a fun side project/ hobby so I don't expect it to blow up, I would really appreciate some of you guys feedback

    https://www.prisimanimations.com/

My main idea for making the website was to make; a place to find and explore animation videos. I figured it could be like a central place form animation videos. Since the launch, the site has expanded to offering free resources to help people interested in getting into animations & digital art. I tried to add as much information as possible and I plan on adding more, even though I'm not the best writer.

Everything on the site (except some CSS stuff(style code)) is hand-coded. I taught myself code over summer break and honestly kind of proud of what it has become.

Here's the full story if anyone is interested. I think it's interesting, but of course I'm biased:

Platform like Intercom that allows for both texting and emailing clients

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 12:39 PM PDT

Hey! We want to improve our notification experience by adding text messages, since customers are asking for them.

We want to schedule texts and emails as part of omnichannel campaigns. One campaign, text or email outputs, all scheduled in advance.

Does anyone know of a platform that allows for both texting and emailing? I love Intercom, and I see that there are some Zapier integrations, but I have no idea how to hook those up. Thanks!

Would be amazing if it also allowed social media messages, but that's probably not possible.

Graduate, working 9-5 on a startup. How can I use my one free hour to be productive?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 12:11 PM PDT

Hey all, I'm a tech blogger, owner of a digital agency + owner of a health tech startup. I just graduated so bought a office and started working 9-5 there. I handle all my companies in one building so everything gets done within that time(or almost done xD)

However, I'm not sure what to do with the rest of the time. I want to be much productive as possible.

Since I graduated, I sort of wanna work for a company to see how things work and learn stuff from professionals but that'd mean sacrificing my businesses so NOT A OPTION.

I go gym for a hour. So with 1-2 hour, what can I use that to be productive? E.g: take a course to learn a new skill, read a book, work on a project etc.

    What do you guys suggest?

Advice on pricing for beauty subscription service

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 12:10 PM PDT

I am currently in the process of launching a beauty subscription service with my friend. In short, we deliver a box of beauty related items to you on a monthly basis. I have been looking at what the competition does and basically they offer 2 plans (1) Annual plans (2) Monthly plans. It seems like the only benefit the Annual plan offers over a Monthly plan is that you get one month of subscription free. So we were thinking of the following:

    Annual plan: $15 * 11 months = $165 upfront for a full year (savings of $15).

Monthly plan: $15 * 12 months = $180 total you will pay for a full year's worth of subscription.

Question 1: What are your thoughts on the pricing plan? Any advice for how we can make it more appealing?

Question 2: The Annual Plan does not seem to be very much more attractive than the Monthly Plan - it's only one month free. Was wondering what suggestions you experts may have on how to make it more awesome.

    Thank you!

Looking for advice on how to move forward with selling from Amazon to eBay. Thanks!

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 12:03 PM PDT

I started drop shipping from Amazon to eBay. I listed 2 different variations and one sold within a day for about $2.23 profit.

Now I have 18 items posted. Some are different variations of the first two, and some are completely different. All are getting a good amount of views. Two variations of the first item posted have a watcher.

Since 5 days ago when only two items were posted none have sold. The reason I am stopped at 18 items currently is because eBay has said I need to call to increase my selling limits. My original motto was if I keep posting profit should just keep rising.

[So one question I have is will eBay let me increase my selling limit even though I have no feedback in the 12 months but have 20 positive ratings from the past?]

[Also should I stick with my plan and keep listing items every day to build up an "empire" of items that should eventually make more revenue over time?]

Drop shipping seems to be full proof since you list an item from Amazon on to eBay for a little profit, and if it sells you buy it then put their address into amazon. Therefore no cost to you up front, and hardly any work (never see item).

So if you posted 10 items a day (and eBay let you) you would have 3,650 posted in a year.

How can I do market research for a very niche product?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 12:00 PM PDT

Don't sell a product, sell a solution to a problem.

So, I decided to build and manufacture a piece of bondage equipment; essentially, its a coffee table/bench that transforms into a sex swing, with a wide variety of positions in between.

The problem this solves is that, in America, 30% of the population is into BDSM, but very few have the room or money for a dungeon or "Red room", not to mention the majority of the bondage furniture currently on the market is big, bulky, garish, and obvious.

My design is very discreet and covers most BDSM setups (horse, chair, spreaders, stirrups, St Andrews Cross), all while being small enough and elegant enough to openly display, without raising kinky questions from children/visitors.

The issue I'm having is how to effectively conduct market research and see how viable a product this could be.

Ive done an extensive online search for similar products and can honestly say there is literally nothing like this on the market, and products that are similar seem to sell mostly to people who do have a dungeon set-up.

My target demographic would be middle class, sex positive men and women with small homes and perhaps even families, who enjoy the bdsm lifestyle, but dont have space for traditional dungeons.

    How do I research this?

Launching a Google-Backed Education Accessibility Startup

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 02:57 AM PDT

When I decided to study abroad, I had a Masters in Biotechnology and wanted to further pursue an MBA in the USA. In the process of finding the right university and talking to education consultants, I discovered that there were immense bias and ambiguity involved in the university recommendation process. Using AI to eliminate that bias and make the university application process hassle-free for international students, is what lead to the formation of iSchoolConnect.

How did you get Google to back it?

Networking while I pursued my MBA at Bentley University is what made iSchoolConnect possible. I met Asif Hasan through the alumni network at Bentley and joined Quantiphi Analytics and AI and ML cloud solutions company based in Boston, Massachusetts. Quantiphi already had Google's attention. So when I decided to launch iSchoolConnect and its various AI-based use cases, Google Cloud sponsored it as a startup.

How did you get your first three signups?

Since our platform was all about helping students study abroad, we went to the direct source i.e events at the local colleges. Therefore, while we were also building our brand presence online, our first 3 signups were from our activities in the local colleges.

Have you raised any money? How much?

We received $400,000 in pre-seed investment in January 2018 and seed funding of $400,000 in June 2019. We were also granted $200,000 in credits by Google in 2018.

    Who is your target demographic?

Our target demographic is international students who intend to pursue their higher education abroad. Our organization focuses on students originating in Asia and traveling to the US, Canada, Australia, and the UK for their further education.

I've always believed that the most effective way of attracting our clients is by providing them with genuine, informative content. That translates across mediums such as blogs, forums, social media, and other communication platforms. We also regularly organize information sessions and seminars at schools across India.

Where did you meet your founding team?

Now, we're a team of 35 members. However, I co-founded iSchoolConnect with an MBA classmate Don Kphury in 2017. However, Don had to leave the startup to pursue other responsibilities so I now run iSchoolConnect myself.

Any tips for finding first employees?

The best advice for finding first employees is to strengthen your network and hire individuals that share your vision and goals for your organization's future. My team is incredibly important to me and iSchoolConnect is a reflection of their effort and contribution.

What is the most common service you sell?

Offering end-to-end services to students applying for their education abroad is the ultimate and the most common service we offer. To make that process easier, we've developed a unique suite of tools such as the Recommendation engine, Essay and SOP analyzer, Video interview analyzer, etc.

Did you run any companies prior?

I had no prior experience in running companies, just my MBA to stand on. Before starting iSchoolConnect, I was an employee at Quantiphi Analytics managing the Data Science and Engineering business.

What motivated you to start your own business?

I was determined to use AI and Machine Learning to build a platform that allowed students to find all the information they needed, in one single place. The only way I could do so on my own terms was to start my own business.

My family was incredibly supportive and provided help and guidance with every step of the way.

Do you have any advice for someone just starting out?

The only advice for people starting out and thinking of starting out is to take that leap of faith and be persistent in spite of various ups and downs. There are many that thin of an idea, those who act on it, own the world.

I feel that every mistake or misstep you take is an arrow in your quiver. It helps you protect and prepare yourself for any upcoming misadventures.

What is stopping you from being 3x the size you are now?

The first year of business is the most critical and in order to create a solid foundation and foothold, sometimes you need to go a little slow. Furthermore, the space in which iSchoolConnect is working in rampant with misinformation. This needs to be resolved with care. Once solved, we expected to grow not by 3x but 10x.

What apps could your business not run without?

Softwares such as Hubspot or Google Analytics for lead management and data analysis, Google Cloud Platform, Gitlab, etc. are some of the most essential software utilized by iSchoolConnect.

    What is current revenue?

With the way our organization is currently expanding, we have an expected ARR of 1.2 million USD by December 2020.

Are there any new services you're working on?

All our use cases are built to work independently. We're deploying our use cases such as the Video interview analyzer for employee recruitment and our chatbots for institutions; and as far as I'm concerned, that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Would you ever sell the company?

I can honestly say that the thought of selling iSchoolConnect has never even occurred to me. Along with our work in the B2C space, we're also delving deeper into the B2B market and making immense headway there. Neither my team nor I, have plans of stopping anytime soon.

Help at a cross road about to have a kosher and clean product launch

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 11:05 AM PDT

Hi guys I been lurking around for a while. I been working on this www.vulcanmachineco.comAnd we have an MVP and we are in processes of debating whether or not to launch it as a beta or as gen1. We been arguing about the liability factor. If something unfortunate does happen what could happen ? in all of TOS and what not we are saying we aren't liable for any injuries if the user is in accident or miss uses the equipment. Would the potential backlash be less if it was worded as a beta release? we already have about 1000 people signed up on our mailing list and we are limiting the first orders to about 20 machines. what would your feedback be? what would you do in my shoes? my co-founders go in cycles and been putting this off until quite literally this week when we were telling our subscribers that we would launch at the end of this month. thank you would really appreciate any tips help or what not !!

What are the best websites to order stickers and business cards for promotion? I'm looking for good quality and a decent price especially for large quantities.

    Is outsourcing really entrepreneurship?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 10:08 AM PDT

After you realize that your time is limited and you can only do so much for 24 hours, I wonder if outsourcing really is entrepreneurship?

You become just a medium that takes a percentage of the trade. Yes, you help both parties in a way and yourself but I don't feel comfortable calling that entrepreneurship.

    Thoughts?

Does anyone know of the proper way to sell DIY electronic kits? I've 3d printed a prototype and custom designed a PCB for a small project. I am curious about liability issues if I sell everything as a kit on Tindie or somewhere else.
