    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Options Trading Thursday - Oct 03, 2019

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 01:05 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on stock options, but if options aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against options here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Required info to start understanding options:

    • Call option Investopedia video basically a call option allows you to buy 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to buy
    • Put option Investopedia video a put option allows you to sell 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to sell

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

Call option - Put option - Exercising an option - Strike price - ITM - OTM - ATM - Long options - Short options - Combo - Debit - Credit or Premium - Covered call - Naked - Debit call spread - Credit call spread - Strangle - Iron condor - Vertical debit spreads - Iron Fly

If you have a basic question, for example "what is delta," then google "investopedia delta" and click the investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

What are some good investing books that are Irish/euro focused?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 11:39 AM PDT

I've been reading the complete idiot's guide to investing but it's for American financial systems.

I'm looking for a guide preferably for Ireland or general Europe.

    3M MMM

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 08:04 AM PDT

How low will it go? Are you buying 3M now or waiting for certain price? Will 3M get up to $200 in 2020?

What's going on with 3m's EPS?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 03:27 PM PDT

It just keeps getting lower and lower every quarter, even if revenue doesn't go down. Is this a really bad sign? Or are is their EPS just lower than usual because of something else going on?

Do you really like your stock brokerage to become 0 commission?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 04:47 AM PDT

    Honestly, I don't.

The reason is that, if the product they are offering are free. Eventually, I will become their product

    • They can sell my data away?
    • They doesn't give me the best matched order?

I rather they just take my commission since they are getting the job done. Although they still can do some hanky panky thing around my data, at least a fair paid commission, will discourage them from doing so.

Non-Resident Alien Advice Request - Is it wise to buy US located ETFs/stocks?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2019 06:45 AM PDT

I live in Brazil and already have a pretty good position on the stock market here, and I'm looking to invest in the US market to reduce my "Brazil risk" so to speak.

I'm still reading about how to do that wisely, and I have some questions.

From what I see, there is a withholding tax of 30% on dividends for NRA investors from a country without a tax treaty (which I think is the case with Brazil), is that correct? Is that tax handled directly by the Broker or I need to do something about it?

Here in Brazil, most ETFs (if not all) reinvest the dividends, is that the same for US ETFs? Or are the dividends distributed (I'm looking mostly to Vanguard ETFs if that is important)?

If they are reinvested I suppose there is no withholding tax, correct?

What about capital gains, are those taxed for NRA investors? Is it the same withholding tax?

For ETFs most time I see people saying to just open an IB account and invest solely on Ireland based ETFs that track the US market, is that the recommended approach? I really would like to do stock picking on some companies I believe, but still have most of my portfolio in a few ETFs. I have no current plans to invest in REITs because of that withholding tax.

Keep in mind that all of this is for the long term, something like 30 years or more.

Tools to find line of best fit for peaks, troughs and avg over x amount of time?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 09:09 PM PDT

Does anyone know of an inexpensive (or preferably free) tool that does this? Lately I've been doing it manually and using Desmos to save my data. There are some other data values I've been using but those aren't quite as important as long as I have the 3 lines of best fit. Here's an example for $MSFT. Thanks!
