Would you give up Google for $17,000 a year? The Federal Reserve wants to know Posted: 11 Oct 2019 05:11 AM PDT The Fed is trying to figure out how much free internet services are worth to the economy. The answer could help the central bank solve one of the most puzzling paradoxes of the economy: The current expansion is the longest in history, yet productivity gains are weak and GDP growth, while steady, is far from stellar. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell has recently cited work by an MIT economist and other experts that suggests the median user would need about $48 to give up Facebook for one month, for example. "A bigger share of our economy is being missed by GDP," economist Erik Brynjolfsson says. [link] [comments]
Wasted health care spending in the U.S. tops annual defense budget, study finds Posted: 11 Oct 2019 06:53 PM PDT Waste in the U.S. health care system ranges from $760 billion to $935 billion per year, or more than total annual federal defense spending, according to a new study. Administrative activities account for the largest source of needless spending, followed by inflated and opaque pricing. "The prices of health care don't reflect what would happen in a competitive market," one expert says. [link] [comments]

Yet many people's finances haven't recovered from the recession's blows, according to a survey by personal finance website Bankrate.com. "Even a modest downturn is going to cause further harm to Americans' personal finances," says Mark Hamrick, senior economic analyst at Bankrate.com. [link] [comments]
