Posted: 06 Oct 2019 07:23 PM PDT My friend is selling me his car. Does he need to cancel his car insurance first, before he sells it to me? I have no idea how the process works. Obviously, if an issue arises with the car, I don't want mails flying to him. Before he sells me his car, would he need to call his car insurance and cancel it first before I can actually drive it? What happens after you have to use your umbrella insurance? Posted: 06 Oct 2019 11:29 AM PDT Do they dump you? Do they raise your premium substantially? Is umbrella insurance for practical purposes a one-shot thing? [link] [comments] |
Can I just move to New York for 3 years and use public transit until the wreck is off my record? Posted: 07 Oct 2019 03:36 AM PDT So long story short, I just wrecked my car. There was a yield on green light, and a car in the opposite side was stopped for their turn - i just didnt see the car behind them swerve into the lane i thought was open when i navigated my turn. I mean you might as well call it anatomy class because i totally rectum. This wasn't my first wreck in recent times. I've had two more, and i'm beginning to think I just need to move somewhere with public transit for a while and take some time away from driving. I just need time away to wrap my head around how to be a better driver, I can't keep testing it on the road or else someone is going to get hurt. Well, I'm in the ad industry, so moving to NY or CHI or LA is totally possible and quite frankly good for my career. NY and CHI are known for not requiring a car. SO my question is, can I collect my settlement to pay off my car (it's paid in full but my brother loaned me the money), and cancel my insurance if i get a job in NY? I could just spend the early part of my career in a city that's known for that industry, and take public transit like everyone else for the 3-5 years it'd take for this to be off my record. It seems like the right career move, it seems like the right move for me right now because I'm clearly a menace to society, and it seems like the right move financially because I avoid that insurance hike. This can't be that simple, I have to be overlooking something - but maybe I just lucked out. I'm 23 and just starting my career, so this plan is more viable than for someone with kids or something. It's just hard to believe that it could be so easy to avoid the consequences of my actions. TLDR; wrecked my car 3x in the last 2 years, I'm at fault for all wrecks and want to take time away from driving. Can I reasonably move to NY for my career in advertising and just rely on public transit for 3-5 years until this wreck is off my record in order to avoid the lost money from the inevitable insurance hike. Would this - theoretically - give me a clean start in 5 years? Also, your replies dont all have to be insurance related, if you have any advice on how to make this plan even better - i'm all ears. Posted: 07 Oct 2019 02:50 AM PDT This question is about PIP. It says that: "Texas law requires that Personal Injury Protection coverage be included in all automobile liability policies unless rejected in writing by the insured." It doesn't make sense to me to have either PIP or Med Pay because I have good health insurance that would probably take care of me. And don't I also have adequate liability for bodily injury? Or not? Neither is required. (Coverages listed below) Please help me understand why I would need this? Or if you agree that I don't need it, help me with filling out their form. This is on the form they've included: "The limit selected represents the maximum amount that would be paid in behalf of each person injured in an accident for expenses incurred within 3 years of the accident date. Please note that we must include $2,501 of PIP in your policy unless you reject PIP or select a higher limit. ( ) $2,501 ( ) 5,001 Underneath that is a section that is called "Medical Payments (Med Pay)" which says that it duplicates PIP so they do not offer both—you can choose one or the other or choose to carry neither coverage. However there is no option to select NOT carrying this Med Pay. There are just five options, all with money amounts. If I don't want this extra coverage. should I just hand-write this "I don't want it option" in and check it off? e.g., "I reject the addition of Med Pay to this policy at this time and each subsequent renewal." Here are the coverages I have (to protect my approximately $100,000-$140,000 house)—my only asset except for the belongings inside which I am currently going through in order to sell for money for food, gasoline, prescriptions, pet expenses, etc.(!) Bodily Injury Liability - Each Person/Each Occurrence - $50,001/$100,001 - $91.92 Property Damage Liability - $50,001 - $118.03 Uninsured Motorists Bodily Injury Each Person/Each Occurrence - $30,001/$60,001 - $22.49 Uninsured Motorists Property Damage - Comprehensive - Acv less $501 - $22.16 Collision - Acv less $501 - $66.56 Emergency Road Service - Full - $9.41 Total 6 Months Premium $351.22 Thank you for helping me understand all this. Auto Insurance is so puzzling to me! My First Question... Posted: 07 Oct 2019 02:38 AM PDT I just signed up for new full coverage auto insurance (TX) which is half the price of my previous insurance. I have 2 questions (I think) and I will post them separately. It will keep things straight in my head if f nothing else! My first question is do I need uninsured motorist coverage if I already have comprehensive/collision? Isn't that doubling up? I want the right coverage but I don't want it if my comprehensive or collision covers it already. Thanks, ahead of time! Coverages: Bodily Injury Liability - Each Person/Each Occurrence - $50,001/$100,001 - $91.92 Property Damage Liability - $50,001 - $118.03 Uninsured Motorists Bodily Injury Each Person/Each Occurrence - $30,001/$60,001 - $22.49 Uninsured Motorists Property Damage - Comprehensive - Acv less $501 - $22.16 Collision - Acv less $501 - $66.56 NOTE: What does "Acv" mean? Am I allowed to use insurance money the way I see fit? Posted: 06 Oct 2019 11:26 AM PDT I have never dealt with (non-medical) insurance before and I'm not really familiar with procedures A while ago my upstairs neighbors had a leak which resulted in some damage around my living room windows (their AC unit was at fault). I called my home owners insurance, filed a claim. A week after they sent out an estimator. A few days ago I received a letter that listed a very detailed estimate of the repairs that needs to be done (including drywall replacement etc). A big chunk of the estimate consists of replacement of custom drapes. The letter specifically says that if I hire a contractor and they think it's gonna be more expensive, I have to contact them. And I just received a check. Since it's getting cold, I think about postponing the work for later, and I think we'll just have to cover cosmetic damage and dry clean the drapes. My question is, do I have to provide receipts to them and if the work is gonna cost less, do I need to return the difference? I'm not trying to scam the insurance, I just really do not know what the rules are. And there is nothing in the letter that suggests I need to send them receipts or start work immediately. I would appreciate any advice. [link] [comments] |
[US] How Do Prescription savings cards work? Posted: 06 Oct 2019 03:25 PM PDT My doctor recently prescribed me a new medication. Retail is ~$3000 My cost after insurance is ~$600. The manufacturer offers a coupon to take that $600 down to $15. I am really curious why they would offer that coupon and how coupon works. My fear is they are just trying to get a bunch of people on the medication before they take away coupon forcing us all to pay the $600. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Oct 2019 05:55 PM PDT I got into a minor fender-bender where the other party has taken responsibility. I took my car to a reputable bodyshop and got an estimate of $740.00 for repairs and they will need to keep the car for 3 days. I contacted the insurance company of the other party and I told them that I rather keep the money for the repairs, which they agreed. However, they won't take the estimate from the bodyshop I went even though is an approved body shop by them. They instead want me to use an app called CCC estimating app to estimate my damage and that's how they will pay me. Does anyone knows if this app gives fair estimates? ALso, can I refuse to use the app? I asked the adjuster if I can just take my car to another body shop that will give an estimate with state farm insurance approved and then give me the money, but the guy said no, because they will want me to leave the car there to fix. I don't trust insurance companies and i just want to get the money that I deserve. By the way, I live in California and I had one child in the car in carseat. I will appreciate any advise. Car deemed a total loss without being disassembled? Posted: 06 Oct 2019 04:39 PM PDT Long story short, I was in an accident recently where my car sustained mostly front end damage. 3 airbags deployed. I picked a shop from the list given by my insurance that had good reviews. 3 days later I get a call saying the shop assumed my car was a total loss just by looking at it, and that is what they submitted to my insurance company. I guess my question is, is this possible? On the outside, it looks like only the front bumper and hood are damaged. Do shops have to disassemble cars before they can deem them totaled? Do I have the say-so to request they disassemble it and tell me exactly how much it will cost? I'm going to post this in a couple other subs because I'm not sure the best place to put it. I just want my car fixed! [link] [comments] |
Basic question about homeowners and dwelling insurance Posted: 06 Oct 2019 03:45 PM PDT Is it 1-2 units for homeowners and you must live in it and 1-4 units for dwelling and you don't have to live there? And then business owner insurance is over 4 units? [link] [comments] |
[WA] Wife's Insurance Failing to Change Surname Posted: 06 Oct 2019 03:30 PM PDT My wife and I got married 2 months ago, and she submitted for a name change through her HR rep at work for her United Healthcare insurance. She's done this 3 times now, and each time we've received a new insurance card with her maiden name. Now, she doesn't care about having to use her maiden name if that's the case, but we're concerned that any future claims will not be processed since her driver's license name and insurance card name don't match. Is there any cause for concern here? [link] [comments] |
First car accident-insurance help Posted: 06 Oct 2019 02:46 PM PDT Basically I was involved in my first accident. Lucky it was minor where I was changing lanes from right to left and the driver behind me accelerated and hit my mirror trying to not let me merge. He suffered a scrape on the side of his car and my mirror is broke. The police who arrived on the scene didn't give us any paperwork. It's cheap to replace a mirror on my own so I was going to just do that without filing a claim, so my rates wouldn't increase. I submitted an accident report to the police shortly after the accident. Recently I received mail from the other parties insurance company asking me to fill out what looks like to be their own accident form. I am fairly certain he claims I am at fault. How should I proceed? Do I need to get my insurance involved now? If so should I file a claim with my insurance or his? Never in a car accident before so not sure how things normally go looking for any advice! This is in MA. Thank you! [link] [comments] |

Adding a locking tool box to a pick up? Posted: 06 Oct 2019 12:47 PM PDT I'm looking at buying a pick up around the end of this year. I'm looking at the secure storage options available and I'm wondering if adding a permanent locking tool box to the back would force me to buy a commercial policy instead of my personal policy? The box would be used to lock non-work related items up while transporting them. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Oct 2019 12:46 PM PDT I havent been driving for a while and i am going to use my exs 2001 outback with 220 k miles on it in which i just put new alternator, tensioner pulley and serpantine belt. I really like the car and want to keep it a little because im broke and the car has sentimental value to me. It is still on her insurance and she used loke many tows that come with it. I want to get my own roadside assistance in case car breaks down and i need to take it to the mech. I remember back in a day AAA was doing this, are they a good choice or isthere anything better for separate towing plan insurance? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Moving back to the US since I was a child; need health insurance Posted: 06 Oct 2019 08:21 AM PDT I'm planning to move back to the US after having spent most my life in Egypt. I want to work part time and go to community college in northern Texas. Preferably a work-study job on campus so I can focus on school. However the community colleges there do not provide health insurance to students, and neither does the part time job. I looked into private health insurance plans but it will cost an arm and leg because I don't think I'd qualify for a Premium Tax Credit since I've never met the income threshold for filing taxes during my stay in Egypt and according to the IRS website I need to provide a tax return from the year before. I am 30, female, and will be separated from my husband and on my own. The work study job will pay about 930 dollars a month. I plan to stay at a friends house to avoid rent. I do not want to spend two years studying without health insurance. I have ADHD, PCOS and Gastroparesis and may need to see a doctor a few times a year. What are my options? Is there any hope?
