    EDIT: I'm in the USA.

So I live here because I'm saving money for a home. It's awesome. It's got everything, kitchen, bathroom, etc. But It's not up to code. For example, the studs are spaced too far from one another. I don't want to have to leave so is it best to pay for repairs out of pocket?

I figure the insurance company will send someone out and they'll want to look inside. Also, it doesn't have a garage door, It has a regular door so it is obvious someone lives here.

Edit. If you think I shouldn't contact insurance please convince me why. I already know I probably shouldn't but I need help convincing my parents not to contact insurance.

    Car accident

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 08:13 AM PDT

So my girlfriend was sitting in there car parked on the street when a neighbour backed out of their driveway and hit the side door or her bran new Mercedes, a police report was done up and everything. We went and got a quote to fix the damages and it was ~6000$ from an auto body shop. However intact insurance has to approve the claim and sent their own "appraiser which appraised the damages at only 3400$ and they will only pay 3400$. Because it's a Mercedes if it's not fixed at a Mercedes licensed dealership we will lose warranty on some of the parts that need to be fixed. But the appraisal doesn't cover the cost or a rental car even though it wasn't even her fault. What can we do about this?

    Quick question as a beginner

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 08:03 AM PDT

1st question.) - If I already have done quotes online, is it too late to call up companies & ask for a quote? I already got $277/month from Progressive, but someone on Reddit said it'd be lower if you called them up & spoke with a agent to assign quotes. True?

Also, my mother told me I can use "umbrella" insurance, which would essentially make the cost much lower, apparently making it state minimum? Which I'd need because I have NOOO money, and I got crippling health bills needing to be paid ASAP.

    Thanks!

    Cobra vs spouse policy

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 08:02 AM PDT

I've received notice our department is downsizing and most will be laid off. I need help to see if I am missing something when it comes to choosing between cobra and going on spouses policy. I got to 2 specialists between every 2/3 months and have to get a lot of blood work for each visit as I have a lot of health issues. Sometimes I go to the regular doctor but not more than 3 times a year.

Cobra coverage would be $517 a month, I pay around $30 for copay for specialists, 100% of blood work is paid. $350 deductible.

Spouses policy would be $395 a month, is free PCP visits and $100 for specialists. I'm not sure what % of bloodwork they pay for but it's not much as my husband usually receives a hefty bill from labcorp (who they are contracted with). Deductible is $2,500.

I know I only have so long for him to add me due to the qualifying event of losing my coverage. If I get on cobra I can always cancel when I get a new plan, his I'd be stuck on until 9/30/2020 when their current plan expires.

Is there something I'm overlooking? What would you do?

    Car Premium Question

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 08:01 AM PDT

I have Allstate, and usually I pay off my car insurance premium in full for a discount, but I might be purchasing a new car in the next few months. When I drop my current car and add the new one halfway through the premium, what happens? Will I have wasted that money or will I just owe the difference?

Car Rental Insurance Claim Denied. HELP!

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 07:52 AM PDT

Over the summer I rented a car out of country for a vacation trip. Last day of the rental I broke down on the freeway, car was towed etc. After some back and forth I received a $5,000 bill for damages, and a note that my expensive purchased insurance did not cover the damage.

What is my best course of action?

Geico isn’t answering my call for my settlement payment

    Posted: 16 Oct 2019 09:35 PM PDT

Got into a car accident 2 weeks ago, my car got totaled; the other driver is at fault and his insurance company(Geico) took 100% liability. It was all good not until they offered me a price for my totaled car. Last Friday, they gave me the number of an adjuster to take care of my claim, they offered me $16k and I'm ok with it; about an hour after they made the offer, they texted me said that the at fault driver's property damage coverage is not enough to cover $16k. Never heard from them after that, I made at least 5 calls till today, it's Wednesday already, and I left 3 voicemails; they are not answering at all. Is this common? What should I do? Also, since they aren't answering the phone, they only payed 5 days of a rental car for me, I have to pay the rental myself since Monday, can I ask them to pay me back?

    Auto Damage Adjuster

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 06:30 AM PDT

I'm thinking about a future career change to auto adjusting. Truthfully I won't be applying for anything anytime soon (likely next 3-5 years) but am curious about the profession. Currently I am a police officer with 8 years experience. I've completed advanced accident investigation school, and also have experience with some auto repair and towing as I worked for the family business before and during college. So I have some mechanical aptitude as well as knowledge of the towing industry and accident investigation. Would a background like mine be viewed favorably for this type of job? What advice or info would you give someone looking to get into that industry? Thanks.

    Am I being scammed??

    Posted: 16 Oct 2019 10:30 AM PDT

    HELP!!

I recently hit a parked car and pulled the bumper off. It was my fault and immediately contacted both the owner of car and insurance company to report incident. A week later I get a call from the owner who is not happy with how my insurance company is handling the situation. It sounds like the owner wants more money for their car, which the insurance company is claiming it's totaled. The owner expressed this is a special car and had a lot of extra features that make it unique. I fully take responsibility for damaging their car, but should I also pay the owner more after the insurance reimbursed for the totaled car?

My cottage is falling into Lake Michigan

    Posted: 16 Oct 2019 06:50 PM PDT

I don't know much about insurance and it's too sensitive of a topic to ask my family about.

We own a lake front house on the coast of Lake Michigan, since the water started rising a few years ago the cliff side started to erode along with it. As of last night the ground below the home caved into the lake and is pulling the house along with it.

Is this something that is covered by insurance or no?

Auto insurance payout for totaled car when not at fault able to get similar vehicle?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2019 08:13 PM PDT

Recently had my car totaled by someone who ran a red light and t-boned me. Going through my own collision coverage under attorney advice. Insurance only pays cash value of car plus tax (In Jersey btw). Now according to them it should be enough to get myself a similar vehicle (mileage, color, trim, etc.) However, obviously that's not the case. Getting a car also involves paying dealer fees, license and registration, along with other expenses (sometimes up to thousands extra if not at least close to 1k). And that's if I can even find a close replica within range and time. Now, I'm just wondering are those costs something people who are not at fault just need to unfortunately cough up?

What happens if I'm uninsured because of a glitch?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2019 01:57 PM PDT

I left my job 9/20 and my healthcare coverage ended 9/30. I declined COBRA. I started a new job on 9/25 and declined their health plan offerings because they sucked. I attempted to enroll in the DC Individual Marketplace on 9/25, first day of my new job. It took them until 10/5 for them to change my enrollment from employee to individual (my previous company's insurance was through DC's Employee exchange).

Now there is a website glitch and I can't enroll in a new plan on the DC Insurance Marketplace. I've called them every other day since 10/5 and am told it's a "technical issue;" they can't even do it for me over the phone because of this glitch. No one will tell me when it will be fixed, and now I fear that my open enrollment period will end before they fix it (it ends 10/25).

    1. what happens if I get hurt while I'm in this glitch limbo? Am I SOL and will have to pay out of pocket for anything?
    2. what happens if I miss my open enrollment window due to this glitch?

If anyone has any other suggestions or resources, my ears are open.

Fiance and I work for the same company. Is there a reason we have to be on the same health insurance plan?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2019 11:49 AM PDT

Tl;Dr us being on the same plan would cost anywhere from $1,600 to a few thousand per year. HR has stated this is a company policy, but is it legal?

My fiance and I are getting married at the end of December. We both work at a large employer (a factory with 1,500 ish people) and yesterday in our meeting about insurance enrollment, the HR rep mentioned that if you and your spouse both work here, you will have to be on the same plan. I just asked HR why this is the case, and she said since we're on a self-funded plan this is what all our locations do.

We have two plans, an HSA with no premiums and a more traditional plan. On the traditional plan, we would pay $1,600 more per year in premiums. And on both plans the deductible is doubled.

I end up meeting my deductible halfway thru the year due to therapy and psychiatrist visits, but my fiance goes to the doctor a few times a year and doesn't come close to meeting his deductible. So basically now I will have twice as long to get that sweet sweet 20% after deductible cost.

There's lots of married couples at my work due to it being one of the only large employers around, but most of them have kids so they're picking the family plan anyway.

Even the higher cost is nothing compared to a lot of health insurance plans, so I know I shouldn't complain. It was just completely unexpected and I'm upset that the cost is so much more. Is this legal or a normal thing for employers to do?

Hospital stay a month ago - lost job yesterday. No bill yet. What can we expect??

    Posted: 16 Oct 2019 03:50 PM PDT

My husband lost his job yesterday. He had health insurance through his job (Blue Cross) and stayed in the hospital September 16-17. I called the hospital today since we hadn't received a bill yet. I didn't tell her about my husband losing his job but she said the bill was still in the "insurance phase." We are in the USA.

Should I call back? What can we expect? Will his insurance still cover the bill since he was employed at the time? What do we do?

Unable to get my car's windshield repaired for two months due to national shortage

    Posted: 16 Oct 2019 03:11 PM PDT

I'm in NC but I understand the shortage is nation-wide. I have a 2019 Honda Pilot with a long crack in the windshield. The insurance is Geico and they recommend safelite. Safelite keeps saying there's a national shortage of this windshield and they have no eta on when it will arrive. I called them today and still the same answer. It's been two months now, not sure what I can do.

    Travelers Homeowners Insurance

    Posted: 16 Oct 2019 03:05 PM PDT

    Hey everyone!

I know this is region and experience driven, but was hoping to get some insight into what people think of Traveler's for homeowners insurance. This would be for Long Island, NY. Currently I have Allstate for auto, and via a broker I'm am getting a good quote for homeowners/auto bundle via Travelers. I personally have no experience with them, though. Allstate is more expensive, but not by so, so much (still hundreds a year) for slightly less coverage.

Based on a search from previous posts, folks had some good things to say about Travelers, but people also recommended checking the JD Power rankings, where Travelers ranks pretty low (compared to the rest). This has me most concerned.

So, what do you all think? Thanks all.

Signing up to become a preferred vendor with insurance companies

    Posted: 16 Oct 2019 06:08 PM PDT

Im not sure if this is the right sub to post in. I own a company that works in conjunction with restoration companies. It is perfectly acceptable for me to give my estimates to these restorstion companies, who in turn pass my invoice on to the insurance company for approval. However there are a few carriers that want the restoration companies to use their preferred vendors.

In the attemt to streamline our process I am trying to figure out how to sign up tobecome a preferred vendor. I have been looking through nationwides website and am having trouble navigating down the correct rabbit hole.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Crooked Plymouth RocK- NJ VS Me

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 01:30 AM PDT

So I'm going to explain the whole situation from start to finish.

Last year on September 29th at a red light I was rear-ended. The guy said he would pay out of pocket and we switched insurance information And because we did that there was no police report taken.he jerked me around for a month before I finally said screw it and called his insurance company.

Turns out they said there was a claim filed for a hit-and-run and the car was parked in New Jersey, I then contested that with the claims adjuster. she said she would look into it and get back to me. From there months I pass by and I kept calling to get an update and they would send letter saying they were still working on it. Roughly 3-4Months passed.

Then after a month more passed I called the insurance company back and it turns out the claims adjuster had retired and they never transferred over the case to someone else. This new person took over the case and ended up speaking again to the other person's insurance and they change their story into the car was stolen.not a part I don't get is how the hell the insurance company Plymouth Rock even accepted a change of story.

after almost a year the new adjuster finally offered to pay for the damages and they sent me a letter saying they would cover Anything up to the property damage limit of $10,000, I told her my car has been in storage for months and they tried to say it was safe to drive because they're third party adjusters said so. The rear tail light was broken and I did get a ticket for it. I have been renting a car and paying insurance on my damaged car all these months.

For a whole year I haven't driven my BMW 4 Series, it's been at a body shop friend of mine owns and sitting in collecting dust. The insurance company is offering $4,000 for the damage and nothing else and I have cold multiple lawyers but they all don't get involved with cases that don't involve personal injury.

I did call insurance fraud of New Jersey and report The insurance claim the person filed and the insurance company for accepting the change of story which will be 8 weeks 😟

I'm pretty savvy when it comes to dealing with legal issues but I'm not sure where to go or who to speak to or what to do in this type of situation

    Any ideas?

Taking another shot at a claims adjuster opening, would love some pro tips

    Posted: 16 Oct 2019 04:35 PM PDT

I've applied for a few other companies before (USAA, Progressive, CSAA), but so far I'm 0-3. However, Farmers Insurance just put up a posting in my area and I'm planning on giving it another shot.

In the past, I've looked up a few threads in this sub about landing one of these jobs, but I'd still love any tips that might pop into our resident claims adjusters' heads.

For more context, this would be a Field Property Claims Adjuster position. Sounds like catastrophe coverage could be part of the job. Posting's kind of unclear. Mentions how travel would be required "if selected for the catastrophe team," so I dunno if that means some of the new hires for this training class would be assigned catastrophe permanently, or if maybe they mean any given year/season there's a chance you could be put on the "catastrophe team." I do have an idea of what catastrophe entails, at least.

I've spent the last three years as a customer service rep for a real estate tech company. I have some ideas of how I can relate my experience to the skills described in the posting, even if my experience doesn't overlap super well with this job. Wish I had some kind of experience working out in the field.

One thing I'm curious about with this position is that as far as I can tell, Farmers doesn't have a large office in this city. Lots of those small insurance sales offices, but not, y'know, a large contact center or something, which is what USAA, Progressive and CSAA all have here. Would this essentially mean telecommuting? Not an issue if so, just curious how that works.

If I go to preferred shop for damage appraisal, can I just take a check and bank the $$$?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2019 12:06 PM PDT

    Pretty straightforward question:

Got into a fender-bender, someone rear-ended me. State Farm (their insurance) said they were at fault, and want to send me to an in-network shop for damage appraisal.

If I go to this shop, can I get the appraisal and then elect to receive a check instead of getting it fixed through the shop? And if so, can I juts bank the money?

    Medical insurance help?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2019 02:14 PM PDT

So is there any medical insurances that work next day? A freind of mines kid hurt their arm. It didnt look bad at first but now It looks possibly broken. They have insurance and have been paying all year on it. The insurance company has cashed checks and we have proof of this. However two days ago when they called to see how much a er visits would cost/ be covered my friend was told they wernt covered and they never had been. They then said my friend had been refunded. My freind never recived any money back and now is scrambling to find insurance for the kid who's in a lot of pain. it's just all a mess. They can pay some but couldn't pay thousands for a surgery without any insurance if it came to that. Not sure what to do, or if I'm posting in right area. Sorry if not. Thank you.
