Posted: 28 Sep 2019 06:05 AM PDT Welcome to this week's Sunday's Success Stories Thread. A lot of us get way too hung up on the destination and the fact that we are not there yet. It is important to take a moment to reflect on a great quote from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., "The steps you take don't need to be big, they just need to take you in the right direction"- Jemma Simmons This is extremely relevant to all of us in this community. We should all be more aware of the successes we achieve every day that carry us closer to our goals. Celebrating these successes, no matter how small they are, allow us to stay motivated, focused, and happy while we struggle to achieve dreams of various sizes. The purpose of this thread is to share our successes from the week with one another and have something to celebrate together. So, let us know what successes you have achieved this week! Nothing is too small or insignificant! #Because this is meant to be a safe place to support emotional and physical health there is a zero tolerance policy in effect. Be KIND. Received an offer to buy out my web app, what do? Posted: 28 Sep 2019 11:05 PM PDT I literally just launched my MVP last week and signed up my first few users, one of whom turned out to be an angel investor. After exchanging a few emails about my app, he offered to buy out my app "as-is," since he'd have access to the talent, capital, and resources to really develop it. What should I do? Alternative: being a founder for a Startup in a developing country Posted: 28 Sep 2019 10:31 AM PDT Hi all, I noticed here most would-be-founders thinking of making a Startup in the USA, although the situation, from my assumption, is that the USA is:
What I was thinking (and maybe suggesting) is that why don't Americans startup elsewhere and perhaps find a founder from the same developing country they plan to startup from, for many reasons like:
Which means scaling up the startup faster with less hassle in general. Be wary there's always exceptions of sticking to the US like personal or health situations, among other reasons. [link] [comments] |
How can I protect myself with regards to cofounders and equity in a young company? Posted: 28 Sep 2019 06:35 PM PDT Hello, I recently started a company with three others, and we have incorporated and distributed equity. All I hear from experienced founders is how startups break down over equity disputes, and how each individual founder needs to protect themselves as much as possible. We almost have a working product and are planning to quit our day jobs once we launch, but despite all of us working on this for the past year, we haven't actually done any branding yet, so there's not a ton of investment into the name, logo, or this specific corporation. So what I'm wondering is, is there any way that things could fall apart and my co founders could cut one or more of us out of the company by just moving everything over to a different corporation? Our agreement says that we all get equity in "ABC, Inc." but until we launch, start marketing ourselves, and sign more lucrative contracts with larger companies, it really wouldn't be that hard for a subset to just re-incorporate as "DEF, Inc" or something and then just re-sign the contracts that we have now with our partners (we are only working with smaller companies at the moment, so we know all of the CEO's well enough that I have no doubt that any of us could walk into their office and say that we've changed the name and they'd re-sigh without even reading the new contract). So how do you protect yourself against this happening, because I have to think that it's happened in the past from someone trying to get more equity or cut people out. Or, is it the case that, if that happens, the law protects people just kind of by looking at the facts and if something like that was done in bad faith, a judge will not let that fly? Thank you [link] [comments] |
Trying to create a script that collects data from a web extension -- advice? Posted: 28 Sep 2019 11:55 PM PDT Hello, I'm trying to create a script that inputs different variables into a chrome extension search, analyzes responses, filters them based on my conditions, and then outputs the results. The best example is if the script inputted a bunch of different codes into the Honey discount code extension, found which one's where active and gave 40% off, and then sent me then identified those codes in the list I had. Any recommendations for how I could do this? [link] [comments] |
How do I deal with setting the price and competition with cheap consumers. Posted: 28 Sep 2019 05:48 AM PDT I'm having trouble with creating a startup We focus on creating sustainable plant based alternatives of food people love. One of our first products is a vegan cupcake that has a meringue based buttercream, it uses really high quality ingredients and is quite costly to make. The competition uses inferior quality ingredients and techniques to make a similar product. Their product is cheaper at 1.5$ and mine is considered expensive and overpriced at4$. I feel like people in my city would rather go for the cheaper option, even if mine tastes better just because it's cheaper. I feel kinda hopeless right now and I don't know how to go forward, I've thought about lowering my price to 2$ but these cost nearly 1.5$ to make and I can't scale up production too much to make a 0.5c profit worth while. Posted: 28 Sep 2019 06:05 AM PDT Welcome to this week's Peer Support and Self Management Thread. This is a Safe Place to Vent, Seek Emotional Support, Share Self Management Techniques and Experiences, or Just Rant. The goal for this thread is to help one another manage mental and physical health so we can more easily find success. We all struggle sometimes and it is important to recognize that the struggle is part of the journey. The important thing is to learn how to overcome that adversity to grow and succeed. Be tactful and classy in how you vent your feelings and share your frustrations. Act in a mature manner. Ask questions, share experiences, and be there for one another. Practice empathy in giving advice and remember that what worked for you isn't guaranteed to work for others. Make suggestions, not demands of others. #Because this is meant to be a safe place to support emotional and physical health there is a zero tolerance policy in effect. Be KIND. Be sure to report any conduct that is in violation of that key tenet. You can also find more support using instant chat on the /r/startups discord. [link] [comments] |
Where does one conduct market research? Posted: 28 Sep 2019 09:30 AM PDT I'm an engineer who has had the opportunity to work at some pretty amazing places and gain some experience on cool projects in silicon valley. I really want to solve local problems back home (Toronto) and the more people I meet and talk with, I realize that coming up with a list of problems to work on is not difficult at all. What's difficult is the market research to determine if it is viable for me to work on a given problem. But I've never learnt how to do market analysis. Not in school nor the industry. Whenever I try to do some research online I just come across expensive papers that I don't have the money to purchase (like 3k per paper). People tell me to use google keywords but how much does that really tell you? Is there some resource I'm unaware of? Would love to know how you guys do market research Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Sep 2019 12:27 PM PDT Recently joined the founding team of a startup, and I'm in a position now where I need to have a title and negotiate equity options and a salary now that we raised our Series A round. Background: the company has about $500k in development spent by the original founder On a day to day I: - manage our oversees developers and UX designers - manage our marketing team - lead internal communications - do market research to guide product development - look for partners for the company - budgeting and finance - build pitch decks and informational assets - write the website copy - put together the roles and responsibilities of other team members - assist in strategy and go to market planning for the future We have a CEO, general counsel and need to hire a CFO. All development thus far is done oversees and my background is in business and consulting. My question is what is my role called and how much is that worth in equity? [link] [comments] |
Freelancing for a startup, never signed a contract but now I want to. Posted: 28 Sep 2019 11:23 AM PDT Hi a bit of background: I have been working with this company for over a year and in that time, I kept hammering the owner to sign a contract I drew up but they gave a bunch of excuses like "I dont have enough money" among others. I know that does not make sense but that's how it went a lot of times. The owner has been paying on time but I feel like there's a reason they are not signing. Now all of a sudden, the owner wants to sign one after I asked again to sign a contract and I also own the rights to the software while getting paid hourly and a fee. So I was wondering a couple of things. - If I decide to stop working, who owns the piece of software written up to this point? The owner paid me, it's hosted on their github organization and hosted on their website. - If I don't own the software above, am I able to create something that is barely similar but takes concepts from the above software and make it my own? - In short, how screwed am I without a contract? - How screwed am I with a contract, especially now that the owner wants to sign one? Posted: 28 Sep 2019 06:58 AM PDT While I work with technology, I would consider myself far from an engineer. And because of this I'd consider myself for all purposes here a non-technical. However I decided to take a leap and start outlining some thoughts of a particular cloud based software I'd like developed. I hired a project manager from Upwork who has experience with similar softwares and has written product requirement documentation and wireframing. While I generally understand how this software works, on a high level, I lacked certain aspects but more specifically the specific details on some functionality. Has anyone every done a MVP like this before? Should I list high level requirements for my pm? Also, we are both jumping on a call with a potential developer next week to get more details on how this documentation should read for the most part. [link] [comments] |
Need sticker but website could change. Posted: 28 Sep 2019 09:05 AM PDT Hi guys, i want to produce some stickers for my project with my website on them. Problem is - the url could change. So my idea was to hide it in a dynamic qr code - however i dont want to be depended on such a service provider since my stickers will be worthless, when they are out of business or whatever. I could also use a link shortener and a static qr code but i would be depended on this provider aswell. Do you guys know a workaround or a standalone solution? Thank you in advance.
