I find that when I have or take time off my job to work on my personal projects, I don’t work nearly as hard as I do when I have more of a time constraint, and end up doing little in comparison, but the whole issue of a time constraint is that there is not enough time, what should I do? What are the worst rookie mistakes that you've come across?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 04:58 AM PDT

I was reading an article on some mistakes that startups commonly make. This one really stuck with me:

    Mistaking 'Disorganisation' as 'Agility'

It's really common for startups to mask their flaws as an advantage. It works in some cases, but not all. Disorganization is a huge one IMO.

I started my first cold-email campaign and landed 2 meetings with business owners in 2 days. Total spend = About $10

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 12:11 PM PDT

I have been reading about cold e-mails for a while. What I understood after watching a few YouTube videos is that it needs to be laser-focused towards the target, and quality is better than quantity. As long as it's super-personalized, there's a chance they might read it.

Not knowing much about e-mail marketing, I thought I should get a new domain and e-mail so my primary e-mail doesn't get blacklisted if I do something wrong. So I got a .com domain and I got a 2 month trial for a custom mail box. So I spent roughly $10 for this.

The next step was to get e-mail addresses of companies. Luckily, my country has an open-data policy and they provide CSV files of companies (Date of Registration, Industry, Company Name, Registration Number, E-mail). I scraped all of it and got about 200K company information. I filtered out companies that were registered in the last 5 years. The name of the business owner can be scraped individually so I selected just the companies in my city and left a bot running overnight and collected the full name of the business owner. I filtered out all the info@, sales@, contact@ and other generic emails and just kept the ones that have the owner's name in the email username (just a few patterns that can be programmed). I used a Python module called validate_email to ensure that the mailbox exists (There are some false negatives).

Armed with this information, I wrote a cold-email template that includes just one custom sentence that I manually write for each target hoping to get their attention. I kept my target at 50 per day. I used a web-based cold-email management service (there are many out there!) that gave me a free 2 week trial. By the time I reached the 2nd day, I already got 2 meetings scheduled. I'm super excited about how this turned out and I have seen that some targets have read my mail about 5-6 times and I have a feeling they might respond when my follow-ups go out.

So far I'm only 2 days into this and I have a 37% open rate and a 6% reply rate and I think I'm off to a great start as I test with different messages. I'd love to hear from the community to learn what kind of response rates you get.

What was the first successful business you started?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 11:15 AM PDT

What was the first successful business you started and what do you wish you could know about business or the startup in general if you could go back and do it all over again?

I am asking this question to gain insight. I am a wholesaler who sells on different internet platforms in the processing of expanding the business but also am looking into other business ventures like investment real estate.

A poem I wrote called, “When” that might be helpful for this mindset

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 05:55 AM PDT

    When -

-When outward influence never overwhelms your inner thoughts.
-When you can break free from societal expectations.
-When you focus more inward then listening outward.
-When you learn self awareness but never judge others.
-When you can learn from the past but never dwell on it.
-When you can learn that success is credited to others, and failure is your own.
-When you learn motivation is fleeting, and self discipline is always reliable.
-When trust is earned not given.
-When you can have empathy but never let the world weigh you down.
    -When humility overcomes ego.
-When you can admit fault, and never make excuses.
-When you can encourage and inspire others, while knowing you're no better than anyone else.
-When faced with fear or anxiety, and can learn that's the signal to act on it.
-When you don't let the world lead you, but decide to lead yourself.
-When you can question yourself, but never doubt yourself.
-When you can be alone, and be content.
-You can be the master of your own domain.

Just signed up on ZenBusiness, I'm still a little confused on what I need.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 01:58 PM PDT

It's my first time starting an LLC. I'm trying to get this going because potential investors are asking whether or not I have an LLC structure set up. I paid $50 to Zen Business plus state fees. But it looks like for that price, they don't send the operating paperwork into the state? It seems like I would need to do my own submission, plus put the notice in the newspapers, plus apply for my EIN. Will that be everything, at which point I can finally open a bank account for my business and accept money? Or is there anything I'm missing? Is it worth paying the extra to have Zen Business do it?

ProTip As CEO Don't Send Emails so Mean And Cryptic That They are Indistinguishable from A Scammers

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 01:09 PM PDT

So everyone at work just got hit with a fraud email that asked for employees to grab gift cards.

The thing is that the CEOs emails are so curt and he treats the employees so poorly like they are his personal assistants etc that the scammers emails were indistinguishable from his emails

And it looks like several employees might have fallen for the scam or atleast almost did

Tl;Dr don't be a dick of a CEO that employees think it it totally normal for the CEO to tell them to buy gift cards for the CEO

Why do the smartest people have degrees, but the richest don’t?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 01:01 PM PDT

Studying psychology and creating studies Vs business scheming and growing and multiplying.

Can I do both and has it been done?

I am both scholar and entrepreneur.

Do I have to chose just one?

Thinking of going back to college..

    Edit: more info and stuff.

Here's my problem. I want to help people and make a difference. I want to do that with a skill or topic I'm passionate about, which is psychology and research. Understanding the brain and how it works and why we behave the way we do and how to change our behavior for the better. Or use that information to create a business. So I'm my thinking I need to get a phd in psychology right? It's not the bath of being an entrepreneur and a poor business strategy, but can I do this poor business strategy, have a piece of paper that helps with a future business strategy. "Look at me I have a degree I'm reputable!" Is what I'm thinking. Use my degree to leverage value and trust in my business

So in the end, that is my business strategy. Don't know what the actual business will be. Can this work? Will this work? Is this stupid? Is this a good plan?

Hopefully I can get an approval! Any tips on how to get volunteers and people who want to get tutored? 😃

Sales Development (Inside Sales) Consulting Business for Tech Startups

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 07:57 AM PDT

I also posted this in r/sales

I've interviewed for a few Sales Development positions and the common thread from these companies is, "We're a startup and up until this point our Sales Rep has been generating their own leads"

For those unfamiliar, tech companies will often hire an in-house person to email and cold-call potential clients with the goal of setting an appointment to walk the customer through the product and how it can help them.

For example, A software company that specializes in retail software for clothing boutiques will have a Sales Development person email and cold-call clothing boutiques with the goal of setting an online meeting to walk them through the benefits of their product (managing inventory, tracking customer buying trends, etc)

I'm wondering if it would be worth it to start approaching small B2B tech startups and offering appointment setting services. I've seen there are already some companies doing this.

The value prop is obviously, "I focus on your specific business and customer segment and generate appointments for your AE's, and in return you save on the overhead of hiring a dedicated SDR. You pay me when you close your deal."

Feel free to shit all over this, just wondering if this is a good idea that's even worth taking action on.

How does somebody market a skilled service business on the internet? (Example: Computer Repair)

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 11:37 AM PDT

    Hello fellow Entrepreneurs,

The reason why I am here is I would like to know strategy in regards to marketing and closing a sale with a skilled service based business. Currently my business is centered around building custom gaming PCs to have whatever the heart's content is in them along with customizing/ consulting the PC Build for a flat rate. Currently I am asking for $129 for my Gaming Rig Build services/ consulting. My results from promoting on Letgo, OfferUp, and Craigslists haven't come to fruition yet. Currently my stats are 8 likes for my service ad on Letgo (real users), and 1 interested buyer on Craigslist who ghosted me for my service (I don't know why).

I also have a base model with excellent and professional specifications, however I'm not sure why no one has contacted me about this.

What do you think I am doing wrong with my listings and please be brutally honest.

Here is a link to my craigslist ad:

Any tips on finding clients for iOS/Android/Web App Dev?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 11:19 AM PDT

    Hello,

I started a software development/digital marketing firm about 4 months ago. What makes us unique is that we handle both the softwares development and if the client wants, the marketing too. Another differentiating factor is that we are an american-based firm managing the account and development, while the actual programming happens overseas. This gives founders the benefits of an in-house perspective, while getting offshore affordability with no cultural barriers interfering with the product dev. Currently, the digital marketing aspect is going fine, but I am wanting to take on some more app/software development projects. We already have done some major projects in the past, some apps being used worldwide etc. so our portfolio is decent, but this business development aspect is somewhat new to me. Any tips on finding new clients in this space?

This is what some of y’all were saying to do, so I’m interested if this is what imagined. Feedback is appreciated!!!

More info: I advertise on /artisanvideos /videos /woodworking I get the most traffic from artisanvideos and I think my instagram might provide me with some traffic as well. The insta is almost at 800 followers but most of the growth is artificial follow backs and I can't link the videos directly with posts on there. What do y'all suggest for advertising? Should I just continue doing an episode a day and posting on those three subs? Feed back on this topic would be really appreciated as well. Thanks!!! How to encourage a little entrepreneur?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2019 06:11 PM PDT

I myself am a person with lots of ideas but never executed anything in my life. I have a good 8-5 job and my son looks up to my and my work (I work in marketing for a local firm helping small businesses be found online - but he thinks I "change google so people can find what they're looking for when they say ok google"). I believe my son (7 yo) has the makings of a potential entrepreneur if properly guided.

He always is thinking of "business" ideas and ways he can make money off neighbors by doing chores or little jobs for them. He recently created this "business" with some older neighbor girls (aged 8-10) call "Top Nails" and created an application form which I've linked here: https://imgur.com/a/pub6ib2. It's simple but made me smile. He even had local neighbor girls answer the questions so he can determine whether he should hire them. There is no real business and it's all pretend and in his head but I think he has a potential.

Can any current entrepreneurs help me with resources that can help not only my son, but also ME to make sure that I'm setting a good example and guiding him down a path that he seems to enjoy?

Data driven company that analyzes media coverage on politicians looking for a person to interact with the market

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 09:18 AM PDT

We are a team of two (data engineer and fullstack developper) who work on a product to monitor media coverage about politicians to support political campaigns. We monitor and analyze around 500'000 articles daily.

The news are analyzed and the outcome is added to a massive database, providing high scientific value to institutions, universities and political campaign agencies. There is more to it but this is roughly what we are doing.

We are close to release an MVP that will be about US 2020 elections, but we are capable to scale it to any campaign (mayor, governor, president, etc) North America and Europe.

We would like to bring our product to the customer and need assistance in doing so. If you feel like you could support us in some way, send me or /u/artem-politwire a PM to discuss further details.

Anyway, we are open to any propositions/advises from anyone. If you think you could contribute in some other way, send us a PM or email to "artem at politwire.com"

How to stay motivated when starting with nothing?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 08:40 AM PDT

For some background information, I am a software engineer trying to build out an idea I have had since graduate school. My idea involves me having to learn new technology that I do not normally work with in my day job so this usually requires a lot of reading and researching online or books. My problem is that I am already mentally exhausted after leaving work and I have a hard time focusing on and retaining any new material that I read when I go home. There even weekends where I just want to lay in bed all and sleep. So my question is how do I keep myself motivated and just grind the work out. Success or fail, I want to see my side project grow into something I can be proud of. Right now, I have not been progressing at the rate that I would like to see
