    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Technicals Tuesday - Aug 06, 2019

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 01:08 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on technical analysis (TA), but if TA is not your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against TA here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Technical analysis (TA) uses historical price movements, real time data, indicators based on math and/or statistics, and charts; all of which help measure the trajectory of a security. TA can also be used to interpret the actions of other market participants and predict their actions

The main benefit to TA is that everything shows up in the price (commonly known as "priced in"): All news, investor sentiment, and changes to fundamentals are reflected in a security's price.

TA can be useful on any timeframe, both short and long term.

Long NYSE:MA – No China Exposure – Meaningless Drop – Good ER – 1 Month Trade

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 09:37 AM PDT

    TL;DR at the bottom.

    Part One: China Exposure

What's the reason for today's drop? RMB.USD hitting 7.00, right? Well, the reason that particular currency pair had the effect it has had on the US market is explained here. Basically, it affects companies that have operations in China, as in companies that sell goods to China, from the US. Well, MA doesn't have that. It has no China exposure. Second source. (Search for China/Asia with cmd + F/Ctrl + F)

    Part Two: The Numbers

So why did it drop? Beta. MA currently has a relatively low Beta of 0.88 meaning for every percent the S&P drops, MA should drop 0.88%. So when the S&P dropped 2.93% today one would have expected MA to drop 2.57%, right? Well, it didn't. MA is currently down 4.68%. This – from my perspective – is quite a nice arbitrage opportunity. Now, it is entirely possible for markets to continue dropping, however, should they do so, I believe MA to be the last stock to do so, precisely because of the numbers I just gave.

One might then ask: "Why did MA drop today in the first place?" To that, I would say that the market regularly overreacts to news such as this. Now, it could very well be that the market continues to overreact to the general market news, by applying the same standards to MA, as it does to a company with a lot more China exposure, say AAPL. But that is a risk one must take.

    Part Three: Why MA

"So why would you take the risk with MA, rather than with any other low China-exposure stock?" Well, for one, I'm already exposed to V; but more generally, it is the highest-valuation, safest, and best-run company with no China-exposure I could find. It had quite a good ER on 30 July with the CEO, Ajay Banga, saying:

"We continue to execute well against our strategy and had another strong quarter of revenue and earnings growth,"

"We are driving growth in our core products with key wins around the globe, and our recent acquisitions, such as Transfast, and new partnerships, like P27 in the Nordics, will help us address our customers' evolving payments needs, particularly in the areas of real-time account-to-account and cross-border payments."

Combing through the numbers a bit, you can see quite a nice balance sheet and again, no China-exposure.

    Part Four: The Trade

My position is as follows: Long @ 262.49; Stop Loss @ 255; Take Profit (Manually) @ 280

    Part Five: tl;dr

    1. MA has no China-exposure, which is the reason for (now yesterday's) drop. MA
    2. MA dropped more than its Beta would have seen rational
    3. MA had a good ER on 30 Jul, making this drop even more irrational
    4. MA is (now) heading in the right direction again, but it's not too late, imo.

    Boeing

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 08:47 AM PDT

Boeing still currently trades at an almost 38 P/E Ratio. Am I missing something or is this crazy for a company that is currently in so much controversy? (Yes I know the long term outlook is they will get past the max situation, just wondering how the P/E is still so high)

    Look at your portfolios!

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 05:46 PM PDT

I've been in the market for more than 30 years and written for several finance websites. I'm a bit alarmed at reading some of these "it's time to buy" posts. I've been through three major meltdowns (1987, 2000-01, 2007-09) and some weird panics like 1998, which destroyed the investment fund of a Nobel-prize winning economist and caused Jim Cramer to give up his hedge fund.

Nobody really knows what the market will do, but there's something I do I'd like to share. Check your portfolio and see if it's been falling MORE or LESS than the percentage of the S and P 500 the last few days. If it's less, there's no reason to worry, you know the S and P will stop falling somewhere, most likely at half the size of the gain since last December 24, but possibly all the way back to the December low--or even lower. But it always rises again, so you're not in any real trouble and may even benefit by dollar-cost averaging.

If your portfolio is declining MORE than the S and P, and especially if you're using margin or playing options, you own a lot of volatile stocks! You could be in trouble of having a decline that will take years to crawl out from. I didn't get above my 2000 tech boom high until 2012, by which time I was a lot more conservative.

    SPY?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 05:16 AM PDT

Can someone walk me through the last 16 hours of SPY? Last night after market close, around 6pm EST it dropped down as low as $278. This morning it's up to $285. After taking a huge dip yesterday during trading hours, it looked like it would continue to fall through today... but at some point not only did it stop falling, but it rebounded by $7/share overnight?

    What happened last night?

What happens to my tableau shares?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 06:33 AM PDT

Took some leave in June. Tableau was acquired. I noticed they've been delisted. Didn't opt into a share exchange.

    What now?

What happens if the price for a put contract goes up and it expires?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 07:31 AM PDT

    So let's say I but 1 put contract for $0.03, or $3 because 100 shares • $0.03 = $3.

If it goes down to $0.02 a share, I know I lose a dollar if it expires.

But if it goes up to $0.04 a share, and I let it expire, do I keep the $1 in profit like you keep the loss?

I don't plan on exercising a put contract because I have no reason to, but I'm just curious if you keep the profit if you can't sell it by the expiration date, but it's price has grown to a profit by the expiration date and stays there through it.

    Thanks.

    What causes indexes to move?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 11:05 AM PDT

As far as I understand, stocks move because of supply and demand. For example if there are way more buyers than sellers, the price will go up. However, since indexes can't be traded, what causes them to move in price? Is it just an algorithm that tracks the underlying stocks?

Good time to invest in individual stock or mutual fund?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 06:24 AM PDT

I have around 5k to invest right now. Not sure if I should buy a vanguard mutual fund such as the total international stock market or invest some into individual companies right now. For mutual fund, I'm planning to hold for at least 5 years. For individual companies, I was thinking Apple and Tesla.

What do y'all think of Activision blizzard

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 12:56 PM PDT

For the last 6 months atvi hasn't had much movement. It had a pretty good P/E of 23 and is one of the biggest gaming companies that isn't going anywhere. At 46 I think it's a good long term investment. What do y'all think?

Anyone have an opinion on Upwork (UPWK)?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 12:31 PM PDT

I was just reading what seemed like a pretty well done article on their stock by seeking alpha that popped up because it discussed SHOP. I was wondering if anyone had a position in the stock or who decided against buying it for a particular reason.

Their area is using an online platform to help businesses (who subscribe on a monthly basis) find free-lance workers. Their point with shopify was that there seems to be a bit of an explosion of people trying to start their own small buisness, and these people will be looking to do freelance work.

They went public back in October 2018 and have had 3 earnings reports (and they report tomorrow). They dont make any money, but for a company that is growing at a 20% clip y/y and is supposedly the worlds largest freelance marketplace so it may have room to grow. Market cap is 1.67 billion right now.

I dont see it as a stock thats going to fly right away, but I do see it as a way to get involved with the transition to more jobs being filled online. My biggest worry is where it goes during a recession where companies arent looking to hire

Question about TVIX Stop Loss Order

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 06:19 AM PDT

Yesterday I sold some of my positions and bought 153 shares of TVIX (10% of portfolio) to help negate some of the losses. After market close, I set a stop loss at $24.75 that was good until end of day (extended hours) on 8/6. Now premarket it shows to be down around $21 and I am wondering if stop losses can only be executed once market opens? Because my shares were not sold as the price dropped below $24.75.

Was this a mistake or did I misunderstand/play this wrong? Yesterday I felt like a genius and today I feel like a fool! Thanks in advance for any assistance.

    KEG

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 09:44 AM PDT

Any thought on KEG ? I've been swing trading it for a few months now but I've seen a massive drop (like all stocks basically) but I feel it's time to load up on it, at a cheap price of 2.09 I feel it could move up to 30% when this all blows over. I'd like to hear if anyone has some insight on this stock, thanks.

    Need some advice please!

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 11:55 PM PDT

Bought square prior to earnings at $81 its now dropped 20% down to $64. I dont know if I should sell and put that money into something else as Square is reporting lower earnings in the future or if its a Hold play for now. I am scared it will drop down more.

Also ACMR bought at $18.90 was following a Zacks pick, and was told to sell at $17. I am thinking on holding as they report Q2 Aug 8 any thoughts?

    Where to buy Tencent Shares?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 04:51 AM PDT

    Hi,

So I'm a big noob when it comes to investing, so I don't understand acronyms and complicated terms.

I'm trying to invest in Tencent, I want to buy a couple of shares, between 1 and 10. I have a DeGiro account but they only allow to buy Tencent shares in lots of 100.

Does anyone know a good platform to buy a few Tencent shares?

    Thanks in advance!
